OLYMPIC FLAME FOR THE OLYMPIC GAMES PARIS 2024 LIT IN SYMBOLIC CEREMONY IN ANCIENT OLYMPIA

April 16, 2024 By admin

On the eve of 100 days to go, the flame for the Olympic Games Paris 2024 has been lit. It was ignited at the historic birthplace of the Olympic Games in Ancient Olympia in Greece. The Olympic flame, embodying peace and hope, will now journey across Greece before coming to France. After arriving in Marseille on 8 May, it will travel across the entire country, and some French overseas territories, arriving at the Opening Ceremony in Paris on 26 July.

Amongst the dignitaries attending this historic event today were International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach, President of the Hellenic Republic, Her Excellency Katerina Sakellaropoulou, the Vice President of the European Commission, Margaritis Schinas, Paris 2024 Organising Committee President, Tony Estanguet, President of the French National Olympic Committee and IOC Member, David Lappartient, the IOC Members in France, Guy Drut and Jean-Christophe Rolland, the French Minister of Sports and the Olympic and Paralympic Games, Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, the Chair of the IOC’s Paris 2024 Coordination Commission, Pierre-Olivier Beckers Vieujant and the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo.

In his speech, in front of thousands of people, President Bach highlighted Paris 2024’s dedication to upholding the Olympic values and fostering global unity. He said: “The Olympic Games are the only event that brings the entire world together in peaceful competition. The Olympic athletes send this powerful message: yes, it is possible to compete fiercely against each other and at the same time live peacefully together under one roof. The athletes will shine and show us what greatness humans are capable of with all their excellence, determination and resilience.”

He continued: “This power of sport will make the Olympic Games Paris 2024 a great symbol of human excellence and unity of all humankind in all our diversity. These expectations are shared by billions of people around the world. In these difficult times we are living through, with wars and conflicts on the rise, people are fed up with all the hate, the aggression and negative news they are facing day in and day out. In their hearts – in all our hearts – we are longing for something which brings us together. We are longing for something that is unifying. We are longing for something that gives us hope.”

President Bach also spoke of the unified commitment to the success of Paris 2024, praising the innovative spirit of the Organising Committee, expressing confidence in France’s preparations and acknowledging the growing anticipation ahead of this summer’s Games.

He said: “This Olympic flame will carry this Olympic spirit from here, our ancient roots, through all of France and finally to Paris – making the City of Light shine even brighter. The Olympic flame will shine over the first Olympic Games inspired by our Olympic Agenda reforms from start to finish. These Olympic Games will be younger, more inclusive, more urban, more sustainable. These will be the very first Olympic Games with full gender parity, because the IOC allocated exactly 50 per cent of the places to female and male athletes.”

The ceremony also provided an opportunity to acknowledge the work being done by Paris 2024, together with stakeholders from the sporting, political and social sectors in France, in realising an important objective of Olympic Agenda 2020: creating a legacy well before the Olympic competitions have even started. Paris 2024’s concept of delivering “Games Wide Open” has engaged millions of people already by promoting physical activity, education, inclusion, equality and sustainability.

Paris 2024 Organising Committee President Tony Estanguet also spoke at the ceremony, sharing the collective anticipation of the host nation. He said: “France is ready to welcome the Olympic Games, a hundred years after the last summer edition on our soil. It is with great pride and honour that we will be hosting the Olympic Games in the country of their founder, Pierre de Coubertin, where we keep a very strong and special link with Olympism. After the first participation of women in the Games at Paris 1900 and the creation of the first Athletes’ Village for Paris 1924, we are ready to write a new chapter in the great Olympic history with the third Games in Paris, France. We want to thank the IOC and Thomas Bach for the enduring help and support, all these years, which have allowed us to conceive and create Games that are not only spectacular, but also more responsible, notably from an environmental point of view, which will make them all the more exceptional. Together, we will organise great Games, and it starts today, with the Olympic Torch Relay!”

The lighting ceremony, held at the Temple of Hera, paid homage to the Olympic Games’ Greek heritage, reinforcing the profound link between ancient traditions and the modern Games. The flame was kindled by the high priestess and, along with an olive branch symbolising peace, was passed to the first torchbearer.

This honour was given to Greek rower, Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medallist Stefanos Douskos, who then passed it on to Laure Manaudou, the first French torchbearer on Greek soil and an Olympic champion at Athens 2004. The flame will now travel onwards, first embarking upon an 11-day journey across Greece, during which the flame will be carried over 5,000 kilometres, through 43 municipalities.

The Olympic flame will then be passed on to the Paris 2024 Organising Committee at an official handover ceremony in the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens before it boards the historic French three-masted ship, Belem. It’s voyage across the Mediterranean will then begin, a journey reflecting the enduring friendship between Greece and France, arriving in the port of Marseille on 8 May, marking the beginning of celebratory festivities in the host nation.

Around 10,000 torchbearers will then carry the Olympic flame over the following 69 days. The route will take them through around 400 cities, across 65 regions in France, and includes visits to six overseas territories (Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, French Polynesia, Réunion and New Caledonia).

More information about the Olympic Torch Relay can be found here.

The Olympic Games Paris 2024 begin on 26 July and will continue until 11 August. Thereafter, the Paralympic Games will take place from 28 August until 8 September.

The International Olympic Committee is a not-for-profit, civil, non-governmental, international organisation made up of volunteers which is committed to building a better world through sport. It redistributes more than 90 per cent of its income to the wider sporting movement, which means that every day the equivalent of USD 4.2 million goes to help athletes and sports organisations at all levels around the world.

    • Olympic Football (Soccer) Teams Highlights:
    • S. Women’s National Team: The most successful women’s football team of all time returns for their 8th Olympic Games. The four-time FIFA World Cup champion and four-time gold medal winners look to redeem themselves after a disappointing performance in the 2023 FIFA World Cup.
    • Colombia Women’s National Team: After a historic performance at the 2023 FIFA World Cup, which got them to the Quarter-Finals, Colombia returns to the Olympic Games after being absent in Tokyo 2020. With rising stars Linda Caicedo and Catalina Usme, Colombia hopes to impress once again and have a solid shot at the podium.
    • Argentina Men’s National Team: The current winner of the FIFA World Cup, Argentina has won two consecutive gold medals at the Olympic Games in 2004 and 2008. In Tokyo 2020, they left the tournament in the group stage, but with a new team and the excitement of being world champions, Argentina is looking to dethrone Brazil and beat France yet again, now in Paris 2024.
    • Dominican Republic Men’s National Team: For the first time in history and after shocking the soccer world, the Dominican Republic makes its Olympic debut stage, where they’ll face Spain and Egypt in the group stage.
    • Hispanic Athlete Capsules:
    • Alexa Moreno (Mexico) – Gymnastics: Now in her third Olympic Games, Moreno got close to the podium in Tokyo 2020, reaching 4th place in the Vault. Nonetheless, Moreno won the hearts of millions due to her perseverance and dedication to the sport. Once bullied for her weight, Moreno has shattered expectations and is now Mexico’s flagship athlete, having recently won a gold medal at the 2023 Pan American Championships as well as three golds at the Central American and Caribbean Games.
    • Mijaín López (Cuba) – Wrestling: Cuba’s headliner who has conquered gold in the last four Olympic Games. If López were to win gold in Paris 2024, it would make him the first athlete in history to win gold in the same individual event at five Olympic Games.
    • Yulimar Rojas (Venezuela) – Athletics (Triple Jump): Known as the queen of the triple jump, the gold medal winner in Tokyo 2020 holds the world record for the women’s triple jump at 15.74m. Rojas was also a silver medal winner in Rio 2016 and more recently, she won gold at the 2022 World Championship in Eugene and again in 2023 in Budapest. She’s considered Venezuela’s top athlete to watch.
    • Victor Montalvo (USA) – Breakdancing: With breakdancing making its Olympic debut, this Mexican American is the two-time defending Red Bull BC One World Champion as well as a gold winner at the 2019 and 2022 World Games.

The 2024 series in the U.S. will again feature a regional qualifying program to balance divisional competition across the country. In 10 of the 14 race divisions, there will be one Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series race per region, identified as East, Midwest, and West. Breeders’ Cup will promote these regional rivalries on the road to the World Championships.

Eight automatic berths will be awarded for the $7 million Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic. The 6-year-old Peptide Nile (JPN) became the first horse to qualify this year for the marquee race when he won the Feb. 19 February Stakes (G1) at Tokyo Racecourse in Japan.

Purse increases in 2024 raised the value of the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic to $7 million and the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf to $5 million.

As part of the benefits to horsemen, Breeders’ Cup has allocated $5,485,000 in free entry fees for this year’s Challenge Series and will pay the entry fees and guarantee a starting position in a corresponding Championships race for all Challenge Series race winners. If not already nominated, the Challenge winner must be nominated to the Breeders’ Cup program by the pre-entry deadline of Oct. 21 to receive the rewards.

NOTES AND QUOTES – GOLF CENTRAL LIVE FROM THE MASTERS ON GOLF CHANNEL AND PEACOCK (FINAL ROUND)

April 14, 2024 By admin

“He’s now one of the great performers in American sport, right there with Patrick Mahomes and Caitlin Clark.” – Rich Lerner on Scottie Scheffler

“It was the dawn of dominance. It was the beginning of an era. What we saw today was the birth of a superstar.” – Brandel Chamblee on Scheffler

“This really is staggering. He was carrying his golf bag, playing college tournament in front of no crowds one year ago.” – Lerner on Åberg’s second-place finish

STAMFORD, Conn. – April 14, 2024 – Golf Central Live From The Masters concluded its comprehensive coverage surrounding the 2024 Masters with post-round reaction and analysis from Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Ga., on GOLF Channel and Peacock, as Scottie Scheffler captured his second green jacket in three years with a final round of 68 to win by four shots.

Rich Lerner hosted coverage alongside analysts Brandel Chamblee and Paul McGinley.

The Masters – Final Round Leaderboard

Player Total
Scottie Scheffler -11
Ludvig Åberg -7
Tommy Fleetwood -4
Max Homa -4
Collin Morikawa -4
Cameron Smith -2
Bryson DeChambeau -2

On Scottie Scheffler (-11, Champion)

Rich Lerner on Scottie Scheffler: “He’s now one of the great performers in American sport, right there with Patrick Mahomes and Caitlin Clark.”

Brandel Chamblee: “Maybe one of the most thrilling tournaments we’ve ever watched because it was the dawn of dominance. It was the beginning of an era…What we saw today was the birth of a superstar.”

Paul McGinley: “When push came to shove, like a great race horse coming into the last furlong, he just put his nose into front, went into overdrive and off he went. And as he did that, all of the guys made double bogeys around him, and the tournament was over.”

Chamblee on Scheffler’s growing reputation: “The great players become intimidating forces. You think about Tiger Woods in 2000. Through that entire year in the final round, there were only four players that managed to break 70 in his presence…this year, thus far, I wouldn’t say Scottie is intimidating, but you can win your way there. It’s days like this, rounds like this, that build that legend to mythical proportions.”

Chamblee: “Scottie has a way of making the extraordinary look ordinary. You don’t realize until you see his other competitors, these great players in the same spot as him, and they can’t quite match him shot for shot. They can’t quite match him with the nuance, and you begin to recognize his genius…small little differences, but they mean so much around here.”

McGinley on Scheffler’s competition: “It was a supreme performance, but you have to say it was aided as well by massive mistakes by the guys chasing him at the wrong time for them and the right time for Scottie.”

Lerner on Scheffler’s athletic comparisons: “Similarly understated in temperament to Tim Duncan of the San Antonio Spurs, and Pete Sampras, who elevated the sport of tennis.”

On Ludvig Åberg (-7, 2nd)

Chamblee on Åberg: “Golly, did Ludvig look amazing. Didn’t put a foot wrong all week, and then with one swing of the club he showed his inexperience. You can’t put it left on No. 11. He will learn.”

McGinley: “I had breakfast today with Hans Larsson, who was his junior coach and still his coach now, and importantly Peter Hanson, the ex-Ryder Cup player who is also a part of his team, helping guide him and navigate those choppy waters between being a top amateur and college player and into the professional game. They’ve done a great job of that not just technically in terms of what Hans has done, but Peter in terms of nurturing him. The addition of Joe Skovron onto his bag I think was a big factor this week on a golf course that we know is notoriously difficult for first-timers…this guy has got a great mental game…the ability to play the game in an uncomplicated way. He looks once, he looks twice, and it’s in the air…he’s very decisive and there’s a freedom to how he plays. That’s the cocktail for success.”

Lerner on Åberg’s meteoric rise: “This really is staggering. He was carrying his golf bag, playing college tournament in front of no crowds one year ago.”

Chamblee on Åberg’s demeanor: “Playing with joy. All the way through this round. From the first tee to the last hole, the smiles were there. More importantly, at the 11th hole when he made double bogey, he walked off that green and was smiling. It wasn’t an outburst of profanity or juvenile antics like we saw from a few players this week.”

Chamblee on Åberg’s chances of challenging Scheffler: “The swing is there. The game is there. Handling the moment is there. These are all prerequisites to being able to do the things that Scottie Scheffler’s doing.”

NOTES AND QUOTES – GOLF CENTRAL LIVE FROM THE MASTERS ON GOLF CHANNEL AND PEACOCK (THIRD ROUND)

April 13, 2024 By admin

“I lost track of time today. I thought today was Sunday. What a ride the best players in the world took us on. This had the feel and excitement of a Sunday.” – Brandel Chamblee on the third round

“I don’t think he’s on his game. I really don’t. His chipping, in particular, has really bailed him out.” – Paul McGinley on Scottie Scheffler (-7, Leader)

“I think the golfing gods have got something in store for him. He hasn’t had many birdies this week, he’s leading in approach play, he’s done the right thing in a lot of instances this week and hasn’t gotten rewarded.” – McGinley on Max Homa (-5, 3rd)

“Bryson is one of the most interesting people, if not the most interesting person, I’ve ever followed in the game of golf.” – Chamblee on Bryson DeChambeau (-3, 5th)

STAMFORD, Conn. – April 13, 2024 – Golf Central Live From The Masters continued its comprehensive coverage surrounding the 2024 Masters with post-round reaction and analysis from Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Ga., on GOLF Channel and Peacock immediately following Saturday’s third round. Rich Lerner hosted coverage alongside analysts Brandel Chamblee and Paul McGinley.

Scottie Scheffler leads Collin Morikawa by one stroke at the top of the leaderboard heading into the final round. Sunday’s Live From The Masters coverage on GOLF Channel and Peacock begins at 9 a.m. ET, and post-round coverage will air on GOLF Channel and Peacock immediately following the conclusion of play.

The Masters – Third Round Leaderboard

Player Total
Scottie Scheffler -7
Collin Morikawa -6
Max Homa -5
Ludvig Åberg -4
Bryson DeChambeau -3
Xander Schauffele -2
Cameron Davis -2
Nicolai Højgaard -2

On Third Round

Chamblee: “I lost track of time today. I thought today was Sunday. What a ride the best players in the world took us on…this had the feel and the excitement of a Sunday. I can’t wait to see what they give us for an encore performance tomorrow.”

On Scottie Scheffler (-7, Leader)

Chamblee: “This reminds me of Houston where he didn’t look like he was on his game…making all kinds of strategic errors and missed short putts…made a number of errors and missed short putts today, but there he is because he’s got so many things to lean on…if one side is a little off, he will pick it up with other aspects of his game.”

McGinley: “I don’t think he’s on his game. I really don’t. You look at the statistics, they illustrate that too…he’s making uncharacteristic mistakes. I know the conditions account for some of that…his chipping, in particular, has really bailed him out.”

On Collin Morikawa (-6, 2nd)

Chamblee: “What a turnaround this has been for him this week. What a magical place to rekindle the magic…his iron play fell off precipitously this year, such that he was losing strokes every time he went out…it’s been really tough watching him the last three or four weeks, but he’s really turned it around this week.”

McGinley on Morikawa changing putters before the second round: “You’re looking for inspiration…that’s what this game is about at the elite level…they’re constantly working on a bit of inspiration, and in this instance it’s the putter…it’s given him something different. Good, solid golf right out of nowhere.”

On Max Homa (-5, 3rd)

McGinley: “I think the golfing gods have got something in store for him. He hasn’t had many birdies this week, he’s leading in approach play, he’s done the right thing in a lot of instances and hasn’t gotten rewarded. These things often balance out. Is tomorrow going to be that day when the flood gates open and all of a sudden there are six or seven birdies when it hasn’t happened all week? He’s been the best iron player this week.”

Chamblee: “This is what major championships are all about…this is an extraordinary turn of events for him, someone who has played in 17 major championships and missed the cut in 11 of them…he’s leading the field in strokes gained approach, but he was just a little off today. A little off with his tee shots. A little off with pretty much every aspect of his game, and hence no birdies and one bogey on the card.”

On Bryson DeChambeau (-3, 5th)

Chamblee: “I think Bryson is one of the most interesting people, if not the most interesting person, I’ve ever followed in the game of golf. He doesn’t accept that the equipment he’s been given has been well thought out. He doesn’t accept the traditional teaching today. He wants to rethink it. He doesn’t accept what was written in a book some 50-odd years ago…he’s constantly turning over every stone and he’s not afraid to be different. He is the absolute epitome of an iconoclast…he struggles around here with his iron play and it was evident today…he was almost last in strokes gained approach today…he’s going to have to have an extraordinary day tomorrow off the tee to get him over those places where he normally struggles. I’ll be looking forward to it and it will be great if he makes a run because he’s great for the game of golf.”

McGinley: “He was on defense today because he wasn’t getting on the right side of the flags, and then it looked like he got a little hot under the collar…but that three on 18 will be a huge psychological boost for him.”

NOTES AND QUOTES – GOLF CENTRAL LIVE FROM THE MASTERS ON GOLF CHANNEL AND PEACOCK (SECOND ROUND)

April 12, 2024 By admin

“We saw arguably the greatest player of all time, still capable of blowing our minds with his mind, with his guts, with his grit. 24 straight cuts. That’s never been done before and it’s yet another tribute to Tiger Woods.” – Brandel Chamblee

“What I saw is somebody who’s on track to be the best wedge player, best short iron player, best mid-iron player in the history of the strokes play era.” – Chamblee on Scottie Scheffler

“Players come in and out of form, and Rory’s just not on his form at this time.” – Paul McGinley on Rory McIlroy

STAMFORD, Conn. – April 12, 2024 – Golf Central Live From The Masters continued its comprehensive coverage surrounding the 2024 Masters with post-round reaction and analysis on GOLF Channel and Peacock immediately following the second round of play.

Max Homa, Scottie Scheffler, and Bryson DeChambeau share a three-way tie for the lead at -6.

Saturday’s Live From The Masters coverage on GOLF Channel and Peacock begins at 9 a.m. ET, and post-round coverage will air on GOLF Channel and Peacock immediately following the conclusion of play.

The Masters – Second Round Leaderboard

Player Total
Max Homa -6
Scottie Scheffler -6
Bryson DeChambeau -6
Nicolai Højgaard -4
Collin Morikawa -3
Cameron Davis -3
Ludvig Åberg -2

On Tiger Woods (+1, T-22nd)

Brandel Chamblee on Tiger Woods making his 24th consecutive cut at The Masters: “We saw arguably the greatest player of all time, who’s physically not capable of doing what he used to, but still capable of blowing our minds with his mind, with his guts, with his grit. 24 straight cuts. That’s never been done before and it’s yet another tribute to Tiger Woods.”

On Second Round

Paul McGinley on the conditions: “It was great to see the conditions ask questions of the players. There were questions in terms of ball control and creativity: Could you fade it? Could you knock it down? Could you draw it? Could you hold it in the winds? That was the first huge question. Secondly, it was about course management…a real taste of the mental game.”

On Scottie Scheffler (-6, T-1st)

Chamblee on comparing Scheffler to Steve Stricker and Tiger Woods: “What I saw is somebody who’s on track to be the best wedge player, best short iron player, best mid-iron player in the history of the strokes play era. That sort of territory belonged to Steve Stricker and Tiger Woods, I’m talking about 50-to-125 yards. Stricker gets the nod…he had five feet over the TOUR average. That’s like Usain Bolt racing Danny DeVito, that’s how good he was with a wedge. [Scheffler] is on pace to be the best wedge player the TOUR has ever seen.”

On Bryson DeChambeau (-6, T-1st)

McGinley on DeChambeau: “I thought he did quite well today…I thought, again, he showed a lot of maturity, different than what we’ve seen in the past from Bryson. Like Tiger Woods, he seemed to miss it in right spots.”

Chamblee on DeChambeau: “When it comes to golf, he’s an intellectual earthquake that transforms itself into this athletic majesty. Every single move, from taking hole to the club to the way his hands fit on the club, to the way his arms are shaped, has purpose. His purpose is to hit it nine miles – but these are laser-guided missiles.”

On Rory McIlroy (+4, T-35th)

McGinley on McIlroy: “His iron play was poor. That’s what’s really been off here…I hate to see it happen. He’s not playing very well. That’s the bottom line. Players come in and out of form, and Rory’s just not on his form at this time.”

NOTES AND QUOTES – GOLF CENTRAL LIVE FROM THE MASTERS ON GOLF CHANNEL AND PEACOCK (FIRST ROUND)

April 11, 2024 By admin

“I was impressed with just how much game he had. The clock is ticking and this is an all-out effort. It’s wonderful to see.” – Jaime Diaz on Tiger Woods (-1, T-17th through 13 holes)

“As the week goes on, I will certainly be watching his iron play to see if in fact it is an improvement because it really is an interesting concept.” – Brandel Chamblee on Bryson DeChambeau’s (-7, Leader) new irons

“He is giving no ground – no hint that he is anything but dominant.” – Rich Lerner on Scottie Scheffler (-6, 2nd)

STAMFORD, Conn. – April 11, 2024 – Golf Central Live From The Masters continued its comprehensive coverage surrounding the 2024 Masters with post-round reaction and analysis on GOLF Channel and Peacock immediately following the conclusion of play on Thursday. Rich Lerner hosted coverage alongside analysts and contributors Brandel Chamblee, Paul McGinley and Jaime Diaz.

Bryson DeChambeau leads Scottie Scheffler by one stroke at the top of the leaderboard following an opening-round 65.

Friday’s Live From The Masters coverage on GOLF Channel and Peacock begins at 9 a.m. ET, and post-round coverage will air on GOLF Channel and Peacock immediately following the conclusion of play.

The Masters – First Round Leaderboard

Player Total
Bryson DeChambeau -7
Scottie Scheffler -6
Nicolai Højgaard -5*
Danny Willett -4
Max Homa -4*
Ryan Fox -3
Cam Davis -3
Tyrrell Hatton -3*

First round in progress*

On Bryson DeChambeau (-7, Leader)

Chamblee: “When we come to Augusta, I’ve never liked (DeChambeau) because he swings so in-to-out… I’m not saying that if you swing in-to-out you can’t play well here – it’s just more difficult for you to do it.”

Chamblee on DeChambeau’s new self-designed irons: “(Curvature) allows woods to have forgiveness and I thought ‘why have we never had that on irons?’ As the week goes on, I will certainly be watching his iron play to see if in fact it is an improvement because it really is an interesting concept.”

McGinley: “You either like (DeChambeau) or you don’t like him, and people seem to gravitate one way or the other. I’ve always liked him… I like the bad guys – that’s why I’ve always liked Brandel (laughs).”

On Scottie Scheffler (-6, 2nd)

Lerner: “(Scheffler) is relentless. Everyone knows that they are going to have to beat him if they want to put on the green jacket. He is giving no ground – no hint that he is anything but dominant.”

McGinley: “He’s got every single piece of DNA you’re looking for when it comes to winning major championships. He does all those skills really well and I think there will be many green jackets on his back by the time his career ends.”

On Tiger Woods (-1, T-17th thru 13 holes)

Diaz: “I was impressed with just how much game he had…he didn’t look physically limited. The look on his face looked like he was relishing this opportunity. He knows how to peak for these things. The clock is ticking and this is an all-out effort. It’s wonderful to see.”

McGinley: “I loved the grit. There was a lot of great ball-striking there, particularly on the front nine. Even the bogey he made on No. 4 was a good tee shot. He hit it exactly where he was aiming…a lot of good, controlled golf out there. It’s just so great to watch him. He still draws you in. Even though you know he’s not playing the way Bryson or Scheffler is, there’s still a dream to it. You see the battle and how much he loves the grind…he still has a lot to contribute as a player.”

McGinley on Woods playing 23 holes on Friday: “He’s finished late tonight. Came off the golf course at 8 p.m. and recovery is a big part of what he talks about…he’s probably got to get up at 4:30 or 5 a.m. for the start…that’s a short recovery time for a guy that hasn’t played 72 holes this year.”

On Rory McIlroy (-1, T-17th)

McGinley: “He looked okay – importantly he got off to a half-decent start in terms of score. He didn’t look comfortable to me and he didn’t look like he was in control of what he was doing, but nonetheless he fought and he battled.”

On Course Conditions

Chamblee: “I wouldn’t go so far as to call it delightful if you were out there playing in some 25-30 mile-per-hour gusts – but definitely better than we expected.”

McGinley: “It was soft conditions and that generally means good scores. Had it remained firm, along with the winds we had today, it would have been carnage out there.”

JIMMY FALLON AND MIKE TIRICO TEAM UP TO HOST NBCUNIVERSAL’S CLOSING CEREMONY COVERAGE FOR THE OLYMPIC GAMES PARIS 2024

April 10, 2024 By admin

Terry Gannon, Tara Lipinski, and Johnny Weir to Call Fourth Closing Ceremony

Live Coverage of Paris Closing Ceremony Begins Sunday, August 11, at 2 pm ET on NBC and Peacock

STAMFORD, Conn. – April 10, 2024 – With the countdown to the Olympic Games Paris 2024 underway, NBC Sports has unveiled its team to close out the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad in Paris this summer. Jimmy Fallon, Emmy Award-winning host of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, will join two-time Sports Emmy Award-winner and NBC Olympics primetime host Mike Tirico to host NBCUniversal’s coverage of the Closing Ceremony of the Games. Joining Jimmy and Mike will be Terry Gannon, 1998 Nagano Olympic figure skating gold medalist Tara Lipinski, and two-time Olympian in figure skating, Johnny Weir, who will be calling their fourth Closing Ceremony together.

NBC and Peacock will present live coverage of the Closing Ceremony from the Stade de France, the country’s national stadium, on Sunday, August 11, beginning at 2 p.m. ET. Primetime coverage will begin at 7 p.m. ET/PT on NBC and Peacock.

“We are excited for Jimmy to make his official Olympic debut in an iconic setting at the biggest party in the world with Mike, while Terry, Tara, and Johnny return to provide a fashionably fun take on the pageantry and parade of athletes who competed in Paris,” said Molly Solomon, Executive Producer and President, NBC Olympics Production.

Fallon will make his Olympics debut as a commentator this summer in Paris, 10 years after The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon launched during the second week of the 2014 Sochi Olympics. Fallon has contributed to prior NBC Olympics presentations, beginning in Vancouver in 2010, when he performed at the Whistler Mountain skiing venue medals plaza.

Tirico, who will host his fourth Opening Ceremony this summer, has been honored with the Sports Emmy for Outstanding Sports Personality – Studio Host in each of the last two years, highlighted by his role as primetime host of the Beijing Olympics (2022) and Tokyo Olympics (2021). Tirico also hosted the PyeongChang Opening Ceremony in 2018 and the Closing Ceremony for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

On the March 12 episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Tirico appeared on the show alongside Kelly Clarkson and Peyton Manning to announce the trio as hosts of the Opening Ceremony. At the end of the segment, Tirico surprised Fallon with an invitation to join him as co-host of the Closing Ceremony and Fallon accepted.

“Is this real?” Fallon asked when offered the invite by Tirico, who assured him that it was in fact real. Fallon: “I’m in! I’m going to do it!” During the following night’s broadcast, Fallon confirmed: “It’s real. It’s happening. I’m headed to Paris. I’m going to co-host the Olympics Closing Ceremony this summer.”

Gannon, Lipinski, and Weir – who called the past three Olympic Winter Games figure skating competitions and NBC Sports’ top skating events – previously served as NBCU’s Closing Ceremony hosts for PyeongChang, Tokyo, and Beijing. Gannon will also call gymnastics in Paris for the second straight Games.

In Paris this summer, the world’s greatest athletes will compete against the backdrop of one of the most beautiful cities in the world where the modern Olympic Games were conceived 130 years ago. This will be the third time Paris has hosted the Olympics (1900 and 1924), tying London for the most as a Summer Games host. Los Angeles (1932, 1984) will tie those two cities when it hosts the first Summer Games in the U.S. in 32 years in 2028.

The organizers of Paris 2024 are reimagining the Games to make them more accessible to the public and to showcase their city to the world. In a first, competitions will be held amidst iconic Parisian landmarks – beach volleyball at the Eiffel Tower, equestrian at the Palace of Versailles, and urban sports at Place de la Concorde.

Last May, NBCU announced that the NBC broadcast network and streaming service Peacock will be the company’s primary platforms for its coverage of the Olympic Games Paris 2024, scheduled for July 26-Aug. 11. Click here for more programming information.

NBCU owns the U.S. media rights to the Olympic Games through 2032, which are scheduled for Paris (2024), Milan Cortina (2026), Los Angeles (2028) and Brisbane (2032). The host city for the 2030 Olympic Winter Games has not yet been chosen.
