The Opening Ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics is This Friday, July 23 on NBC

STAMFORD, Conn. – July 19, 2021 – Michael Phelps, who has won more total Olympic medals (28) and gold medals (23) than anyone in history, will join the NBC Olympics team in Tokyo, it was announced today.

Phelps, who joined the NBC Sports team on several nights at the U.S. Olympic Trials for Swimming last month in Omaha, Nebraska, will serve as a primetime correspondent in Tokyo and will also join Dan Hicks and Rowdy Gaines in the booth for select swimming competition.

“From the moment he joined our team at Trials, Michael’s ability to provide insightful analysis, thoughtful commentary and tell entertaining stories was apparent,” said Molly Solomon, Executive Producer & President, NBC Olympics Production. “We’re thrilled to have him join us in Tokyo and our audience will benefit from hearing the perspective of the most decorated Olympian of all time.”

Phelps competed in five Olympic Games from 2000-16 and holds the world record in the 400m individual medley. Swimming Coverage Continues NBC Olympics’ Record Coverage of U.S. Olympic Team Trials Ahead of Tokyo Olympics

STAMFORD, Conn. – June 16, 2021 – NBC Olympics’ live coverage of the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for swimming concludes with the final five nights of coverage in primetime, continuing today at 6:30 p.m. ET on NBCSN and Peacock, and 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC from Omaha, Neb.

Coverage over the next five nights will feature qualifying heats, semifinals, and finals competition, concluding on Sunday, June 20, in primetime at 8 p.m. ET on NBC with the men’s and women’s 50m freestyle and the men’s 1,500m freestyle.

This Saturday and Sunday, live swimming trials coverage in primetime on NBC follows live U.S. Open golf and precedes U.S. Olympic Team Trials for track & field both nights.

Vying for spots on Team USA are five-time Olympic gold medalist Katie Ledecky, who could tie or break the all-time record for Olympic gold medals won by a U.S. woman (8) in Tokyo; two-time Olympic gold medalist Caeleb Dressel; four-time Olympic medalist Simone Manuel; 12-time Olympic medalist Ryan Lochte, who is trying to make his fifth team at the age of 36; and three-time Olympic gold medalist Ryan Murphy.

Ledecky (400m freestyle), Murphy (100m backstroke), Regan Smith (100m backstroke), and Lilly King (100m breaststroke) are among those who have already secured their Team USA spots this week.

Team USA looks to continue its Olympic success, having led the medal count in swimming at seven consecutive Games, including in Rio, where the team won 33 medals.

Peacock will live stream NBCSN coverage of the U.S. Olympic Swimming Team Trials.

STAMFORD, Conn. – June 2, 2021 – NBC Olympics presents live coverage of Wave I of the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for swimming this weekend, beginning Friday, June 4 at 8 p.m. ET on Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA from Omaha, Neb.

Swimming trials coverage will take place in two waves, beginning this weekend with Wave I and continuing June 13-20 with Wave II, and includes eight nights of primetime coverage on NBC.

Team USA looks to continue its Olympic success, having led the medal count in swimming at seven consecutive Games, including in Rio, where the team won 33 medals.

Patrick Kinas (play-by-play) and three-time Olympian Elizabeth Beisel (analyst) will call this weekend’s action.

Wave I qualified U.S. swimmers will compete at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for swimming in a wildcard bid to reach Wave II of the event and race to become a member of the U.S. Olympic Team. The four-day Trials competition will feature many of the country’s rising talent, with the top two swimmers of every event moving to Wave II.

STAMFORD, Conn. – May 20, 2020 – NBC Sports presents classic sports-themed Saturday Night Live episodes on NBCSN next week, beginning Monday, May 25, at 8 p.m. ET with a Sept. 1991 episode hosted by Michael Jordan, just three months after he won the first of his six NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls.

From next Monday through Friday in primetime, NBCSN will televise 20 SNL episodes dating back to the early 1990s that were hosted by the biggest names in sports. Athletes serving as host on next week’s stunt have combined to win 35 MVP awards (regular and postseason), 29 Olympic gold medals, 10 Super Bowls, nine NBA titles, and five World Series, not to mention a host of MMA and professional wrestling belts.

In addition to Michael Jordan, following are the SNL hosts in NBCSN appearance order: LeBron James, Charles Barkley, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Eli Manning, J.J. Watt, Dwayne Johnson, Andy Roddick, John Cena, Ronda Rousey, Michael Phelps, and Derek Jeter.

STAMFORD, Conn. – May 18, 2020 – Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA presents every memorable moment from the world’s best swimmers during this week’s primetime 2019 World Swimming Championships Week, which begins tonight at 8 p.m. ET and continues the network’s 2019 World Championships Week coverage, which spans a multitude of Olympic and Paralympic sports over the next 10 weeks.

From tonight through Friday, May 22 (starting at 8 p.m. ET), Saturday, May 23 (starting at 10:30 a.m. ET), and Sunday, May 24 (starting at 8:30 a.m. ET), 2019 World Championships Week – Swimming features over 50 hours of programming from the 2019 World Aquatics Championships from Gwangju, South Korea. Five-time Olympic gold medalist Katie Ledecky, two-time Olympic gold medalist Simone Manuel, two-time Olympic gold medalist Caeleb Dressel, three-time Olympic gold medalist Ryan Murphy, two-time Olympic gold medalist Lilly King, and teenage backstroker Regan Smith highlight the competition.

The U.S. finished the 2019 World Aquatics Championships atop the swimming medal table, totaling 27 medals. Dressel made history by becoming the first swimmer to earn eight medals at a single world championships, while Ledecky, who battled illness throughout the week, became the first woman to win four career world titles in the 800m freestyle.

NBC Sports host and play-by-play announcer Dan Hicks will introduce coverage each day throughout the week’s swimming competitions. Hicks, along with NBC Sports’ Jason Knapp and three-time U.S. Olympic gold medalist Rowdy Gaines, called the event, joined by reporter Ahmed Fareed.

On the opening day of competition, Ledecky placed second in the 400m freestyle final, and Dressel and five-time Olympic gold medalist Nathan Adrian led the U.S. men to victory in the 4x100m free relay. Dressel won the 50m fly (a non-Olympic event), claiming his first individual title of the 2019 World Championships.

King won her second consecutive world title in the women’s 100m breaststroke on the third day of competition, besting rival Yulia Efimova of Russia.

On day four, American swimmers had several strong showings in semifinals: Dressel posted the fastest time in the men’s 100m freestyle semifinals; Hali Flickinger and Katie Drabot were the top two qualifiers to the women’s 200m butterfly final; and defending world champion Chase Kalisz had the fourth-fastest time in the men’s 200m individual medley. 19-year-old Kristof Milak of Hungary won the men’s 200m butterfly with a time of 1:50.73, breaking Michael Phelps’ world record.

On the fifth day of competition, Dressel broke his own American record in the men’s 100m freestyle with a time of 46.96 seconds, winning his third world title of the competition, and Ledecky returned to the pool in the 4x200m freestyle relay after scratching from two events earlier in the week. Americans won four additional medals on day five: Flickinger (silver) and Drabot (bronze) in the women’s 200m butterfly, Kalisz (bronze) in the men’s 200m individual medley, and Olivia Smoliga (gold) also broke her own an American record in the women’s 50m backstroke, a non-Olympic event.

On day six, Dressel broke Phelps’ 10-year world record in the men’s 100m fly semifinals by finishing in 49.50 seconds, and also placed as the top qualifier in the men’s 50m freestyle semifinals. Manuel won her second straight world title in the women’s 100m freestyle, setting an American record with a time of 52.04 seconds, and became the second swimmer to win multiple world titles in the event. In the women’s 200m backstroke semifinals, Regan Smith broke Missy Franklin’s world record with a time of 2:03.35, while Murphy picked up a silver medal in the men’s 200m backstroke finals.

Ledecky, after dealing with an illness all week, won her fourth consecutive world title in the women’s 800m freestyle in dramatic fashion, surging ahead in the final 50m to capture the gold. Ledecky became the only woman to win four career gold medals in the 800m freestyle. Dressel, who won three gold medals on day seven to bring his total to six for the week, became the first swimmer to win six or more gold medals at two different world championships (six in 2019, seven in 2017). Smith claimed the gold medal in the women’s 200m backstroke, finishing with the second-fastest time in the event’s history (2:03.69).

On the final day of competition, Dressel earned his eighth medal of the 2019 World Championships, becoming the only swimmer to win eight medals at a single world championships. Manuel claimed the gold medal in the women’s 50m freestyle and King won the gold in the women’s non-Olympic 50m breaststroke, becoming the second woman to win the event at successive world championships.
