DWAYNE “THE ROCK” JOHNSON STARS IN NBC SPORTS’ SPECIAL “SUPER GOLD SUNDAY” OPENING TEASE TO CELEBRATE SPORTS’ BIGGEST DAY EVER

February 10, 2022 By admin

STAMFORD, Conn. – Feb. 10, 2022 – Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will star in NBC Sports’ opening tease for “Super Gold Sunday” – an unprecedented day in sports media history – featuring Super Bowl LVI and the 2022 Winter Olympics this Sunday, Feb. 13. Sunday’s coverage will feature the awarding of the Lombardi Trophy in Los Angeles and multiple gold medal events in Beijing on NBC and Peacock.

Johnson narrates the open for the 5 p.m. ET hour of the Super Bowl LVI Pregame Show on NBC and Peacock, setting the stage for the day’s historic slate of action. The tease will be released across NBC Sports’ social platforms on Sunday afternoon. Johnson will also have a special role on Sunday, delivering an electrifying pre-kickoff speech from the field.

Highlights of Johnson in the piece:

Today, we celebrate something that’s never happened in 4.5 billion years on planet earth: Super Gold Sunday.

The Super Bowl and the Olympic Games. The biggest game of the year and the greatest spectacle in sports. They have never happened on the same day until now.

It’s about the Lombardi and the gold, silver, and bronze. It’s about touchdowns and twizzles, monstrous hits and the monobob.

It’s about the idea that this game and these Games can achieve one of the most precious feats of all – bringing us all together for a celebration of who we are.

Last Friday, Johnson narrated NBC Olympics’ “I Dare You” opening film for the primetime presentation of the Opening Ceremony of the 2022 Winter Olympics.

Sunday’s coverage on NBC and Peacock’s premium tier begins at 8 a.m. ET with the Winter Olympics from Beijing. Super Bowl LVI coverage begins at Noon ET with the NFL Films-produced Road to the Super Bowl. Click here for more details and information about NBC Sports’ commentary team for Super Bowl LVI.

At 1 p.m. ET, the five-hour Super Bowl LVI Pregame Show kicks off from Los Angeles on NBC and Peacock, leading into Super Bowl LVI at 6:30 p.m. ET.

Following Super Bowl post-game coverage, including the awarding of the Lombardi Trophy, coverage from Beijing continues with the Winter Olympics Primetime Show at 10:45 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock, which will feature gold medals awarded in ice dance figure skating and monobob. “In 2018 we welcomed her to the show. In 2022, Chloe Kim, you are the show.” – Todd Harris on Chloe Kim earning back-to-back gold medals in the halfpipe

Shaun White Looks to Win Gold Live in Primetime Tomorrow Night (Feb. 10) on NBC and Peacock

STAMFORD, Conn. – Feb. 10, 2022 – NBC Olympics continued its primetime coverage of the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing, China, tonight on NBC and Peacock. Mike Tirico – after travelling back from Beijing – returned as NBC Olympics primetime host and opened coverage from NBC Sports’ International Broadcast Center in Stamford, Conn.

Highlights of upcoming coverage include:

    • Three-time Olympic gold medalist Shaun White, who is competing in his fifth Olympic Games, seeks gold once again in the men’s snowboarding halfpipe final tomorrow live in primetime on NBC and Peacock;
    • The U.S. men’s ice hockey team plays its first game of the preliminary round against host nation China tomorrow live at 8:10 a.m. ET on USA Network and Peacock;
    • The 2018 Olympic gold medal-winning U.S. women’s ice hockey team continues its gold medal defense when they play Czech Republic in the quarterfinals tomorrow live at 11:10 p.m. ET on USA Network and Peacock. NBC will also air portions of the matchup;
    • The U.S. men’s curling team, skipped by 2018 Olympic gold medalist John Shuster, plays Great Britain in pool play tomorrow live at 8 p.m. ET on CNBC and Peacock.

Following are highlights from tonight’s primetime coverage of the Winter Olympics on the platforms of NBCUniversal:

FIGURE SKATING – NBC & PEACOCK

Terry Gannon on Nathan Chen’s gold medal-winning performance: “The best skater in the world just brought it on the biggest stage in the world!”

Tara Lipinski on Chen: “He’s been the heir apparent and it’s finally time for the Quad King’s coronation. Give him his crown! … The lyrics at the end of his program said, ‘the greatest of all-time,’ and he proved it…He’s been waiting for this moment for four years.”

Johnny Weir on Chen: “That is what he has prepared for. He’s done this before and this performance was the absolute best of what Nathan Chen does…rarely does a skater come around that is this consistent…this gold medal will be so deserving…not only did he win the Olympic gold medal, he crushed his own high score.”

Gannon on Chen: “The 22-year-old from Salt Lake City. You think about where that journey started on a practice rink built for the Salt Lake City Games, and now it ends with a gold medal in Beijing.”

Lipinski on Chen: “He worked so hard for this moment. He has made the impossible look so easy for so many years, but this Olympic gold did not come easy for Nathan Chen. He had to work for it.”

Lipinski on Jason Brown: “He rides the edge of disaster to hit these positions and transitions and it’s because art comes first for him. Every artist has a canvas – Michelangelo used a ceiling in a chapel, Shakespeare a page, Jason Brown uses the ice. He will be one of figure skating’s greatest artists.”

Weir on Brown: “He is a stunning, stunning skater. It’s not about the medals for a skater like Jason Brown. It’s about the performance. It’s about the serenity. It’s about the beauty of skating. He’s one of the few modern skaters who can make it work without doing all of the other technical stuff.”

Weir on Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama: “Yuma Kagiyama is a tremendous skater. I knew he was going to have a great Olympics here, but I’m so looking forward to the next four-year cycle — watching him grow, watching him develop. But skating is more about the way you do things than what exactly you’re doing, and he does things so well.”

Lipinski on Kagiyama: “I feel like he skates with a trail of sparkles behind him. He’s just such a rare talent.”

Tirico on the delay of the team event medal ceremony: “The IOC said it was due to a ‘legal issue.’ We can now tell you that the reason behind the delay involves the Russian Kamila Valiyeva testing positive for a banned substance prior to the Olympics. The drug – trimetazidine – helps the heart muscle function more normally when it is getting lower oxygen delivered to it. For sports, it potentially means the athlete could continue to perform at a higher heart rate for a longer period of time. She was part of the Russian Olympic Committee team that won that event, the 15-year-old Valiyeva proving pivotal to the team’s success. The U.S. took silver in that event. There has been no official adjudication at this point, so it’s still not known if or how this will affect the results of the team event, or Valiyeva’s eligibility to compete in the individual competition. That begins Tuesday and she is the heavy favorite to win gold.”

***

SNOWBOARDING – NBC & PEACOCK

Todd Harris on Chloe Kim’s first run of 94.00, which won gold: “Chloe Kim with the gold medal flex…In 2018 we welcomed her to the show, in 2022, Chloe Kim, you are the show.”

Todd Richards on Kim’s first run: “That’s it ladies and gentlemen, that run right there – that is guaranteed gold… I talked to the U.S. team halfpipe coach JJ Thomas and I said, ‘How’s Chloe feeling?’ He said, ‘Man, she’s kind of rattled right now.’ … She said she had a really bad practice, but Chloe came out and threw down.”

Richards on Kim attempting to land the first-ever 1260 on her third and final run: “Oftentimes progression is much more important than accolades in the sport of snowboarding. It’s always been that way and it always will be. The accolades come with progression, if you choose that path…She could have came down and road down the middle of the halfpipe, but no. She chose progression, and that’s what we want to see. She’s been pushing the envelope for years. Congratulations to Chloe Kim.”

Kim to Randy Moss on her first run: “I’m not going to lie, I had probably one of the worst practices I have ever had which does not put you in a good place mentally, especially out here. So I was dealing with all sorts of emotion, self-doubt, but when I was getting ready to drop in to my first run, I just reminded myself that it’s a brand new run…and I was so happy I was able to do that.”

Kim on attempting the 1260: “I only did it once out here during one of the practice days, so I’m honestly super proud of myself for just going out there and even trying to do it. It’s a very new trick, so I’m really looking forward to being able to land it — maybe at the next one.”

Trace Worthington on Lindsey Jacobellis’ gold medal in women’s snowboard cross: “It’s time to move on and finally put an end to talking about the 2006 Lindsey Jacobellis and begin talking about Beijing Olympic gold medalist Lindsey Jacobellis! Her costly error in 2006, which became the identity for Lindsey Jacobellis for 16 years, has finally been put to rest. A new memory will take its place, and it’s a golden memory.”

***

ALPINE SKIING – NBC & PEACOCK

Ted Ligety on Mikaela Shiffrin potentially racing in tomorrow’s Super-G: “We don’t have word if she’s going to race, but she is going out there to train Super-G this afternoon, and assuming that she does race, she’s still the favorite in the combined and has a real chance in the Super-G because the Super-G suits her skills so well.”

Porino: “Your heart just breaks for her, and I think the reason that she has not committed to this yet is because there is a safety component to Super-G and if she doesn’t feel like she is of the mind to be competing, Super-G can be dangerous.”

2022 OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES – FEB. 8 PRIMETIME HIGHLIGHTS ON NBC & PEACOCK

February 8, 2022 By admin

“Unfortunately, that is ski racing and as disappointing as this is for Mikaela, she was risking it all…She is still an immensely great talent, a great skier, and this one race does not take away from that.” – Lindsey Vonn on Mikaela Shiffrin skiing out in the slalom

“The thing that she does best is she’s consistent with her technicality. Her runs are so far and above everybody else’s in terms of what she can link together in the halfpipe.” – Todd Richards on Chloe Kim

“Another signature Olympic moment authored by the Minnesota native…Building on her burgeoning legend.” – Steve Schlanger on Jessie Diggins’ bronze in the women’s sprint

Nathan Chen & Chloe Kim Look to Win Gold Live in Primetime Tomorrow Night (Feb. 9) on NBC and Peacock

Mike Tirico Returns as NBC Olympics’ Primetime Host Tomorrow Night

STAMFORD, Conn. – Feb. 8, 2022 – NBC Olympics continued its primetime coverage of the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing, China, tonight on NBC, USA Network and Peacock. Maria Taylor, from NBC Sports’ International Broadcast Center in Stamford, Conn., and NBC News’ Craig Melvin, from Beijing, served as NBC Olympics primetime co-hosts.

Melvin opened tonight’s coverage by saying: “Craig Melvin in for a travelling Mike Tirico. With the Super Bowl fast approaching, Mike got on a plane right after yesterday’s show. We heard from Mike literally 45 seconds ago to say that he’s just landed. He’ll be back on the air tomorrow night, and we are going to do our best to keep the Olympic flame glowing for you.”

Tirico will host primetime coverage from Stamford on Wednesday and Thursday before traveling to Los Angeles for Super Bowl LVI. He will anchor Friday and Saturday night primetime Olympic coverage from a set outside SoFi Stadium. Tirico will host Super Bowl LVI pre-game coverage and primetime coverage on NBC’s “Super Gold Sunday,” before returning to Stamford on Monday where he will anchor the remainder of the Games.

Highlights of upcoming coverage include:

    • Chloe Kim aims for a gold medal in the women’s snowboarding halfpipe final tomorrow live at 8 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock. She won the event in 2018;
    • Three-time world champion and 2018 Olympian Nathan Chen headlines the men’s figure skating free skate in pursuit of an individual gold medal following his record short program score last night (113.97). Live coverage of the men’s figure skating free skate will be presented tomorrow in primetime on NBC, USA Network and Peacock;
    • The men’s alpine skiing combined downhill (in primetime at 8 p.m. ET) and slalom (live at 1:15 a.m. ET) will be presented tomorrow on NBC and Peacock;
    • The U.S. women’s curling team, skipped by 2018 Olympian Tabitha Peterson, faces the Russian Olympic Committee in its opening round-robin matchup tomorrow live at 8 p.m. ET on CNBC and Peacock.

Following are highlights from tonight’s primetime coverage of the Winter Olympics on the platforms of NBCUniversal:

ALPINE SKIING – NBC & PEACOCK

Dan Hicks on Mikaela Shiffrin skiing out on her first slalom run: “It’s unimaginable. Ok, sure, it is a precarious discipline, the slalom, and sure, she skied out after five gates the other day. But twice in a span like this in her specialty? That is just shocking. It is just one of the bigger shockers in Olympic alpine skiing history to see what has happened to Mikaela Shiffrin, a legend in the sport at 26, in these two events. Her best events…When you think of past disappointments in past Olympics in any sport, this is just hard to believe. It’s going to be way up there on the list of Olympic disappointments that you could ever imagine. It’s just so uncharacteristic.”

Ted Ligety: “Shocker right off the bat. Didn’t even get into the course…That is heartbreaking…There has been so much pressure built up over the years, and just to see this mistake, I mean this is almost a rookie mistake. It’s derived from her going a little bit too straight, and that was the game plan that her and Mike Day, her coach, came up with…and it just didn’t work out for her.”

Lindsey Vonn: “Unfortunately, that is ski racing and as disappointing as this is for Mikaela, she was risking it all. She was pushing herself to the limit. I mean, did she make the correct tactical choices? Maybe not, but this does not take away from her historic career…I think she really has to keep it in perspective. She is still an immensely great talent, a great skier, and this one race does not take away from that.”

Steve Porino: “I can’t think of a time that Mikaela Shiffrin has skied out in back-to-back races in the 11 years that she’s been on the World Cup.”

Shiffrin to Todd Lewis on skiing out: “I think I just slipped. I had every intention to go full-gas, and there wasn’t really space in the course to…slip. Not even a little bit. I didn’t give myself space for that. In my experience, that mentality has brought my best skiing, and today, I went out on the fifth gate.”

Ligety on Petra Vlhova’s first slalom run: “That is a shocker…(She) is just pushing too hard on the skis, just grinding every single turn, not able to get the power out of it, and that is just a sign of somebody who is skiing very, very tight.”

***

SNOWBOARDING – NBC & PEACOCK

Todd Harris on Chloe Kim: “Simply put, Chloe Kim is the gold standard.”

Todd Richards on Chloe Kim: “What does Chloe Kim have that the other competitors do not? … Chloe has so many tricks to choose from. She has a lot of different options, but the thing that she does best is she’s consistent with her technicality. Her runs are so far and above everybody else’s in terms of what she can link together in the halfpipe.”

***

FREESTYLE SKIING – NBC & PEACOCK

Tom Wallisch on Team USA’s Colby Stevenson warning the silver medal in big air on his third run: “Pressure was on, he needed a big score in this third and final run. Put the pressure on himself to land two tricks back-to-back…A huge run on a huge trick.”

Wallisch on Norwegian Birk Ruud’s gold medal: “It was his day. Dominating fashion walking away with gold…I mean, It’s child’s play for him. He makes it look so easy.”

***

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING – NBC & PEACOCK

Steve Schlanger on Jessie Diggins’ bronze in the women’s sprint, the first individual medal in the event in Team USA history: “More Olympic magic for Team USA, and Jessie Diggins gets the bronze in Beijing tonight! … Another signature Olympic moment authored by the Minnesota native…Building on her burgeoning legend.”

Chad Salmela on Diggins: “She’s so gutsy. You knew that even though (Sweden’s Jonna) Sundling was away, Jessie could see the medals and she just chased it down.”

Following are highlights from tonight’s primetime coverage of the Winter Olympics on the platforms of NBCUniversal:

FIGURE SKATING – NBC & PEACOCK

Terry Gannon on Nathan Chen’s world record short program: “It’s not 2018 anymore. This era has belonged to Nathan Chen.”

Tara Lipinski on Chen: “You know what Nathan Chen just said with that performance? ‘You can stop asking me about PyeongChang.’ A distant memory. A perfectly clean short program…It was like a French daydream. It suits his style so well. The Nathan I know is optimistic and artistic and easy going, and this taps into all of those personalities in skating. It was spectacular…He did not skate to lose, he skated to win.”

Johnny Weir on Chen: “It’s like he just has ice running through his veins. He approaches every competition with this chill, this swagger, but his reaction at the end of this short program I think was the most telling reaction we’ve ever seen from him in competition. The pressure on those shoulders – those capable shoulders – but incredible, incredible pressure that he’s dealt with, that performance was a stunner. He did everything he needed to do.”

Gannon on Japan’s Yuzuru Hanyu’s short program: “After all the build-up, Yuzuru Hanyu had to play catch-up from the start.”

Lipinski on Hanyu: “His short program is his forte, it’s where he makes his most important chess move putting Nathan Chen in check and setting the tone. That was shocking.”

Weir: “That first jump of his Olympic performance could be the one that costs him the gold medal.”

Lipinski on Jason Brown: “Very simply, this short program is a work of art. Forget about his technical, forget about if he’s doing a quad or not, his choreography to this music is iconic. It cannot be replicated…What he does in his in-between skating is the best in the world and I don’t think that there are many skaters out there that can match it.”

Weir on Brown: “It is so stunning that you almost forget you are watching a competition.”

Lipinski on Japan’s Shoma Uno’s short program: “There is so much attention on Nathan Chen and Yuzuru Hanyu, but do not forget Shoma. He is the reigning Olympic silver medalist and he’s coming here for a gold medal.”

Lipinski on Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama’s short program: “I could not stop smiling…I haven’t seen a talent like this in a long time. He rose to the top so quickly. He was just a junior two years ago, and I’ll say it out there, bold statement – he is my dark horse for Olympic gold.”

ALPINE SKIING – NBC & PEACOCK

Dan Hicks on Ryan Cochran-Siegle’s silver medal-winning Super-G run: “Ryan Cochran-Siegle has been waiting a long time for a run like this!”

Ted Ligety on Cochran-Siegle’s run: “That was amazing to see what he’s been able to do. He’s been really frustrated trying to find his skiing and the position and right track on this snow, and today, that was a ripper…Today he figured it out. Honestly, I’m emotional too. I’ve spent so much time with this kid most of my career and just seeing him pull it out on a huge day is awesome.”

Lindsey Vonn on Cochran-Siegle: “That was such an amazing run. It literally looked effortless. He was smooth the whole way down, you didn’t see a lot of excess motion, he wasn’t throwing snow anywhere. He was absolutely clean, carried speed well top-to-bottom…RCS must be so, so proud of himself right now. That was spectacular.”

Cochran-Siegle to Todd Lewis on if his recovery from injuries made this run mean more: “I think 365 days ago I was walking out of a bed from neck surgery, so it’s special. As an athlete, you’re always charging and always trying to get better, so I think sometimes you can use it as fuels but just never giving up ion yourself.”

Steve Porino: “Let’s be honest – we were talking to the coaches, talking to each other, and we didn’t see this coming. And it felt like Ryan Cochran-Siegle, he felt as though it wasn’t his time, and yet delivered the way he did there. I do not have the words for the performance that he just put together under that kind of pressure when the skiing hadn’t been there for him, and he pulled it out like that. My jaw is on the table.”

Porino on the number of falls during Super-G runs: “This is the Olympics. Super-G is one of those disciplines – or the discipline – where you need to take almost the highest risk because you don’t know what the speeds are going to be, and you have to be on the bitter edge.”

FREESTYLE SKIING – NBC & PEACOCK

Shane Bacon on Eileen Gu: “We’ve talked about a star in the making, this is simply a superstar…The 18-year-old, here to represent China, wanted to introduce snow sports and free skiing to people in this country, to young people. She said, ‘If I can change one young girl’s life and show her one new passion or help break one boundary, then the decision was worth it.’ … Eileen Gu is gold.”

Tom Wallisch on Gu’s gold medal-winning final run: “That is a trick, I don’t know if she’s ever attempted that on snow, and that’s what free skiing is all about. That’s not qualified, she didn’t know what she was going to try. She knew the competition was so high, so she just went out there and had to do something bigger and better to reach for the gold.”

TIRICO ON EILEEN GU, THOMAS BACH & PENG SHUAI

Tirico: “Eileen Gu, winning the Big Air final. If you were watching, you may have noticed the blue jacket over her right shoulder – IOC President Thomas Bach in the finish area. The IOC has confirmed that earlier at the venue, Bach was watching with Peng Shuai, and you can’t help but notice the intersection here. Here’s Gu performing, the San Francisco-born daughter to a Chinese mother, competing for China in part because she says she wants to inspire future generations of female Chinese athletes, as there remains international concern for Peng, the established Chinese sports star, three-time Olympian, and questions about her ability to speak freely continue to persist. As that continues to play out, one other note: Bach said that Peng told him she’ll be leaving the Olympic bubble today and entering quarantine. If you come into the Olympic bubble, you have to go back into quarantine before you resume life outside the Olympic bubble in China.”
