2022 OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES – FEB. 6 PRIMETIME HIGHLIGHTS ON NBC & PEACOCK

February 6, 2022 By admin

“That’s just a really heartbreaking experience for Mikaela, but she has a lot more chances in these Olympics.” – Ted Ligety on Mikaela Shiffrin skiing out in giant slalom

“It was like haute couture. There was something just so special and unique about that performance.” – Johnny Weir on Madison Chock and Evan Bates’ ice dancing performance

U.S. Women’s Hockey Team Faces Rival Canada in 2018 Gold Medal Game Rematch Live Tomorrow, Monday, Feb. 7 at 11:10 p.m. ET on USA Network and Peacock

Three-Time World Champion and 2018 Olympian Nathan Chen Highlights Men’s Figure Skating Short Program Tomorrow Live in Primetime at 8 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock

STAMFORD, Conn. – Feb. 6, 2022 – NBC Olympics continued its primetime coverage of the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing, China, tonight on NBC, USA Network and Peacock. Mike Tirico serves as NBC Olympics primetime host and opened coverage.

In tonight’s show, Tirico narrated a feature on two-time Olympic gold medalist and the winningest slalom skier in World Cup history Mikaela Shiffrin, who recalls the loss of her father after he passed away in February 2020.

Also as part of tonight’s primetime show, Tirico discussed the statement from IOC President Thomas Bach regarding Chinese tennis star and three-time Olympian Peng Shuai.

Monday marks Tirico’s final night hosting Olympic primetime coverage from Beijing. Maria Taylor and NBC News’ Craig Melvin will co-host Tuesday night’s coverage, with Taylor at NBC Sports’ International Broadcast Center in Stamford, Conn., and Melvin in Beijing. Tirico will host primetime coverage from Stamford on Wednesday and Thursday before traveling to Los Angeles for Super Bowl LVI. He will anchor Friday and Saturday night primetime Olympic coverage from a set outside SoFi Stadium. Tirico will host Super Bowl LVI pre-game coverage and primetime coverage on NBC’s “Super Gold Sunday,” before returning to Stamford on Monday where he will anchor the remainder of the Games.

Highlights of upcoming coverage include:

    • One of the fiercest rivalries in sports and a rematch of the 2018 women’s hockey gold medal game will be presented when the U.S. plays Canada in pool play tomorrow, Monday, Feb. 7 live at 11:10 p.m. ET on USA Network and Peacock. Pre-game coverage begins at 10:45 p.m. ET;
    • Three-time world champion and 2018 Olympian Nathan Chen highlights the men’s figure skating short program tomorrow live in primetime at 8 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock (also presented live at 8:15 p.m. ET on USA Network);
    • Ryan Cochran-Siegle and Travis Ganong are expected to lead the U.S. alpine skiing team in the men’s Super-G tomorrow live in primetime on NBC and Peacock;
    • The women’s freestyle skiing big air final will air tomorrow live in primetime at 8 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock as 2018 Olympian Maggie Voisin is expected to vie for a spot on the podium, while Eileen Gu (China) is also expected to be a medal contender.

Following are highlights from tonight’s primetime coverage of the Winter Olympics on the platforms of NBCUniversal:

ALPINE SKIING – NBC & PEACOCK

Dan Hicks on Mikaela Shiffrin’s fall in her giant slalom run: “Unbelievable. Shiffrin, who is one of the most consistent and mistake-free skiers that we’ve ever seen, goes down on her hip and out in her first run here in Beijing…You never know what’s going to happen in the Olympics with all the pressure and all that’s on the line.”

Ted Ligety on Shiffrin: “It just shows how steep this thing is. She was just trying to cling on to that line with her fingernails, trying to stay on the course, and when it is this steep, there is just no chance of getting back in it…That’s just a really heartbreaking experience for Mikaela, but she has a lot more chances in these Olympics.”

Steve Porino: “It is hard to overstate what a perfectionist Mikaela Shiffrin is. The fact that she went out just a few seconds into this race is something. She was attacking…but you don’t see this very often.”

Porino on Shiffrin’s aggressiveness: “Mikaela Shiffrin was not mailing this one in, she was going hard. And that provoked the issue. It takes a lot of courage to get in a position that is so precarious, but she didn’t get out this time”

Shiffrin to Todd Lewis on her fall: “I was attacking and just a small mis-timing kind of when I set my edges, and just slipped out. It’s an amazing surface, it’s such amazing conditions, but you don’t have any room for some small errors…and I was pushing, so I’m really happy with that, but yeah, five gates into the course, that stings.”

Shiffrin to Lewis on her outlook moving forward in these Games: “It’s hard not to dwell…but I just cannot afford to spend or waste energy on something that’s now in the past…I’m going to reset, focus on what I can control for the slalom. There’s still a long two weeks to go, and I’m still looking forward to it. I’m sorry that that was the performance that I did today, but that also happens and, well, I want to hide the disappointment but I’m also not going to dwell on that because that’s not going to help me at all.”

Ligety on lack of practice at the Yanqing Alpine Skiing Centre on Xiaohaituo Mountain: “It just shows how important it was for these women to get over there and get some training on the snow and these conditions. Coming from Europe, it’s a huge adjustment to go from the icy conditions to these dry, manmade conditions. It’s a real challenge. Your skis want to bite on you, they’re turning at a different radius, and it almost feels like somebody’s yanking your foot around.”

FIGURE SKATING – NBC & PEACOCK

Terry Gannon on the U.S. ice dancing team of Madison Chock and Evan Bates: “A statement and a reminder of how deep and how talented the U.S. ice dancers are.”

Tara Lipinski on Chock and Bates: “This is the thing with Madison and Evan — their elements are so exceptionally executed, they should be in many cases, the highest scoring elements of the night. So, their recipe for a great score might differ from others, but it gets there.”

Johnny Weir: “(Russia Olympic Committee’s Victoria) Sinitsina and (Nikita) Katsalapov skated the crowd-pleaser, they skated a program that they knew would work at the Olympics, but Chock and Bates it was like haute couture. There was something just so special and unique about that performance. It was the first time I’ve loved that free dance all season, and they earned that.”

Gannon on Karen Chen’s free skate in the team event: “Time and again she’s been counted out, there have been doubters. Karen Chen keeps coming back.”

Lipinski on Chen: “She looked so relaxed in this performance today. She said before the short program, she’s a little sad when she leaves China because she knows that her career is coming to an end and she just wants to embrace every positive and negative performance or skate here with the best attitude and remember this as her final Olympics. I think this free skate was an incredible way to do that.”

Lipinski on ROC’s Kamila Valiyeva: “The first to land a quad, the first to land two quads – what she is doing is other-worldly. It’s almost like a special effect. Is it even real?”

Weir on Valiyeva: “She is the best skater I’ve ever seen. The way she utilizes the ice to help her get up into these jumps, the technique on those jumps, her style…she’s not going to be happy with that performance because she missed that one element, even the rest of the world should only be so lucky to skate like that.”

***

FREESTYLE SKIING – NBC & PEACOCK

Hannah Kearney on Team USA’s Jaelin Kauf’s moguls silver medal: “She did the absolute best she could. Today it was silver, and that is a gold medal in her eyes, in her family’s eyes. That was incredible. There were doubters out there after she did not perform wearing the No. 1 bib at the last Olympics, and here she is bringing home a medal for the United States of America.”

***

TIRICO ON PENG SHUAI

Tirico: “The International Olympic Committee released a statement saying that IOC President Thomas Bach had that promised dinner with Peng Shuai, the Chinese tennis star and three-time Olympian. That dinner happened 36 hours ago. Peng later attended the China-Norway curling match. The carefully-worded statement also said that Peng plans to attend more events in the coming days, but it made no mention of Peng’s allegations from earlier this fall of sexual coercion by a former high-ranking Communist Party official. After not being seen publicly for nearly three weeks, there was and still continues to be an international outpouring of concern. Thomas Bach had a call with Peng, you might remember, back on November 21 aiming to establish her well-being. It ended up raising even more questions, which this latest development does little to quell. In addition, Peng was interviewed for the first time by an independent media outlet – the French newspaper L’Equipe – but she was accompanied by an official from the Chinese Olympic Committee, continuing concerns about her ability to speak freely.”

2022 OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES – FEB. 5 PRIMETIME HIGHLIGHTS ON NBC, USA NETWORK & PEACOCK

February 5, 2022 By admin

“I haven’t seen a run like that out of Julia Marino, I don’t think ever. She put it together when she needed to.” – Todd Richards on Julia Marino’s Silver Medal-Winning Run in Women’s Slopestyle Snowboarding

“She is the queen of figure skating. A talent like this comes around once in a lifetime.” – Tara Lipinski on Russian Olympic Committee’s Kamila Valiyeva

U.S. Women’s Hockey Team vs. Switzerland Live Tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 6 at 8:10 a.m. ET on USA Network and Peacock

Two-Time Olympic Gold Medalist Mikaela Shiffrin to Make 2022 Winter Olympics Debut in Giant Slalom Tomorrow in Primetime on NBC and Peacock

STAMFORD, Conn. – Feb. 5, 2022 – NBC Olympics continued its primetime coverage of the 2022 Olympic Winter Games in Beijing, China, tonight on NBC, USA Network and Peacock. Mike Tirico serves as NBC Olympics primetime host and opened coverage.

Highlights of upcoming coverage include:

    • Two-time Olympic gold medalist and the winningest slalom skier in World Cup history Mikaela Shiffrin is expected to compete in the women’s giant slalom tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 6 live in primetime at 7 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock;
    • Primetime coverage tomorrow will also feature three programs in the figure skating team event: women’s free skate, pairs’ free skate, and free dance on NBC and Peacock;
    • The 2018 gold medal-winning U.S. women’s ice hockey team continues its gold medal defense in Group A play against Switzerland tomorrow live at 8:10 a.m. ET on USA Network and Peacock.
      • The team, featuring 13 players from the 2018 Olympic team, including Kendall Coyne Schofield, Hilary Knight, and Amanda Kessel, defeated the Russian Olympic Committee 5-0 this morning to open play pool with two victories;
    • The U.S. women’s moguls team, headlined by 2018 Olympian Jaelin Kauf, Hannah Soar, and Olivia Giaccio, compete in the final tomorrow live at 6:30 a.m. ET on USA Network and Peacock (encore at 7 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock).

Following are highlights from tonight’s primetime coverage of the Winter Olympics on the platforms of NBCUniversal:

FIGURE SKATING – NBC & PEACOCK

Johnny Weir on Team USA’s Karen Chen: “Her performances are a thing of beauty. There’s almost a vintage quality to them. She really takes the time to finish every moment of her skates, and it’s impressive to see when people are rushing around the ice trying to fit everything in these programs.”

Tara Lipinski on Chen’s short program: “Looking back, she didn’t have the Olympic skate she wanted to at her last Olympics in 2018, and this is definitely not the skate she wanted in this short program.”

Weir: “She pulled way outside of the circle on that triple loop…she’s a tremendous skater, that program is beautiful for her. It’s driving, it’s passionate, it’s mysterious – but you’ve got to land the jumps.”

Lipinski on Russian Olympic Committee’s Kamila Valiyeva: “She is the queen of figure skating. A talent like this comes around once in a lifetime…she is untouchable…she is the triple threat. She is a technician, she is an artist, and she has that competitor inside of her.”

Weir on Valiyeva: “I’m having a hard time finding the proper words. She is mesmerizing. She can inspire the world with performances like that…she told me she doesn’t listen when people talk [about] her being the Olympic champion or being the best in the world, but you have to think with that performance, the world is looking at her as the Olympic champion.”

Lipinski on Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama in the men’s free skate portion of the team event: “Looking ahead to the individual event, if you want to know who the spoiler could be, it’s this guy. He is the dark horse for the Olympic gold medal. Yes, all of the attention is on Yuzuru Hanyu and Nathan Chen, but if they make a mistake, he’s going to step right in.”

Lipinski on Team USA’s Vincent Zhou: “Vincent is a perfectionist, and knowing Vincent, he will not be happy with this skate. He’s capable of so much more…You just hope that he uses this performance as fuel and as a dress rehearsal for his individual event.”

***

SNOWBOARDING – NBC, USA NETWORK & PEACOCK

Todd Harris on Jamie Anderson’s attempt to win three consecutive slopestyle gold medals: “It’s hard to believe going back to 2014, when snowboarding slopestyle was introduced to the Games, that we’d be here now, some eight years later, and here’s Jamie with an opportunity to do something truly special.”

Todd Richards on Anderson’s fall on her third run: “Tough break for the golden queen unfortunately. That was an uncharacteristic fall, but she was going for it.”

Richards on Julia Marino’s silver medal run: “Julia Marino probably just put down the best run I’ve ever seen her do! That was incredible…I haven’t seen a run like that out of Julia Marino, I don’t think ever. She put it together when she needed to.”

Harris on Marino: “Marino almost picture perfect on the biggest jumps…Flexing up on the competition.”

Marino to Randy Moss after securing the silver medal: “It’s a run I’ve been wanting to put down for a long time, and this season I didn’t necessarily get to put that one down and to do it here just means a whole lot different than anything else. I’m just so over the moon to have landed that top to bottom.”

Marino to Moss on what it was like waiting to see where her score would place her: “Nerve-wracking, for sure. But I’m so happy for all the girls out here. We have a great crew, we’re all really good friends, and it just means a lot to watch all these girls really ride their best. That wasn’t an easy course by any means, and I’m so proud of us. We all pulled through and I just couldn’t be happier to be in the final with all those girls.”

Richards on New Zealand’s Zoi Sadowski-Synnott’s gold medal-winning final run: “That is the future of women’s progression right there…That was an unbelievable show and a clutch performance.

ALPINE SKIING – NBC & PEACOCK

Tirico on the Austrian men’s alpine skiing team playing cards during weather delay: “I don’t know if they’re playing Go Fish, Hearts…if they were in the Midwest, they’d be playing Euchre.”

STAMFORD, Conn. – February 4, 2022 – NBC Olympics presented its enhanced coverage of the Opening Ceremony of the 2022 Winter Olympics from Beijing, China tonight on NBC and Peacock.

NBC Olympics’ primetime host Mike Tirico was joined by Savannah Guthrie, award-winning journalist and co-anchor of TODAY. Guthrie served as host for her second Opening Ceremony, while Tirico handled his third after the pair worked together on the Tokyo Olympics.

Andy Browne, the Editorial Director of Bloomberg New Economy Forum, and Jing Tsu, the John M. Schiff Professor of East Asian Studies & Comparative Literature at Yale University and author of Kingdom of Characters — a book about the politics of the Chinese language – contributed to coverage of the Opening Ceremony,  providing a broader context for the U.S. audience.

NBC Olympics correspondents Steve Kornacki, NBC News’ celebrated national political correspondent, and Lindsey Vonn, a three-time Olympic medal winning skier for the U.S., also offered commentary.

NBC Olympics’ bobsled, luge, and skeleton reporter Lewis Johnson and figure skating and short track speed skating reporter Andrea Joyce served as reporters.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson introduced Team USA in opening film titled “I Dare You”.

Highlights of upcoming coverage from the 2022 Winter Olympics on the networks of NBCUniversal include:

    • The 2018 gold medal-winning U.S. women’s ice hockey team – headlined by Kendall Coyne Schofield, Hilary Knight, and Amanda Kessel – continues its gold medal defense in opening round play against the Russian Olympic Committee tomorrow (Sat., Feb. 5) live at 8:10 a.m. ET on USA Network and Peacock;
    • The women’s short program portion of the figure skating team event is expected to be led by 2018 Olympian Karen Chen and will be presented tomorrow live in primetime at 8 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock;
    • The women’s snowboarding slopestyle final – expected to include medal contender Jamie Anderson – airs tomorrow live at 8:30 p.m. ET on USA Network and Peacock (encore at Midnight ET on NBC);
    • Two-time Olympic gold medalist and the winningest slalom skier in World Cup history Mikaela Shiffrin is expected to compete in the women’s giant slalom Sunday live in primetime at 7 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock.

Following are highlights from NBC’s primetime coverage of the 2022 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony:

American speed skater and flag bearer Brittany Bowe to Tirico and Guthrie while walking in the Parade of Nations: “This is an absolute honor of a lifetime. I can’t think of a more powerful and uniting moment as an athlete and as an American, and it’s an absolute honor to lead Team USA into the Opening Ceremonies…It’s a dream come true.”

American curler and flag bearer John Shuster to Tirico and Guthrie: “This reminds me of my first Olympics, walking around the loop and at the very end of it we caught all of our families when they were there. For my kids to get to see this, pretty darn cool.”

Three-time Olympic medalist and NBC Olympics correspondent Lindsey Vonn on walking in the Opening Ceremony: “It’s such a nerve-wracking event. I mean, that’s really the first time you’re walking out onto the world stage as an Olympian representing your country. I remember in Salt Lake in 2002, I was more nervous to walk in the Opening Ceremony than I was to compete. It’s such an honor and there’s so much weight on your shoulders in that one moment.”

Vonn on Mikaela Shiffrin: “She’s coming into these Games having skied incredibly well in pretty much every discipline. She obviously has that huge rivalry with (Slovenia) Petra (Vlhová), but she is in a position to win medals in every race that she competes. It really now is just a management of schedule and if she has the energy to be able to compete in all five.”

American speed skater Erin Jackson to Lewis Johnson on what young girls and young Black girls may see in her: “I just try to be a good example whenever I can. And especially with young Black girls, and you know anyone, just with the Winter Olympics, you don’t see a whole lot of diversity, so I just hope I can be someone who they can see and be like, ‘Oh, maybe I can go out and try one of these sports.’ So, that would be awesome.”

Mike Tirico: “About 6,000 miles from Los Angeles on a frigid Friday night at the National Stadium in Beijing, China, where once again no international fans and the families of Team USA watching back at home, the Opening Ceremony of the 24th Olympic Winter Games takes place. Beijing, becoming the first city to host both a Summer and Winter Games. Fourteen years ago, this stadium was also where the 2008 Olympics opened in such stunning and memorable fashion. Tonight, the official start of these Games comes in a very different world, surrounded by many different questions. Nearly 3,000 athletes (from) Team USA and across the world in the middle of it all…We welcome you to Beijing. Just over six months ago in Tokyo, we said, ‘We’re about to embark on an Olympics unlike any other.’ Well, now we’re about to top that. It’s another Olympics, another gathering of the world in the midst of a global pandemic, and add in the host nation China’s place in global politics, the complexity of everything that’s set to take place over the next two weeks is significant.”

Savannah Guthrie: “There is unquestionably more controversy and complications around these Games than any in our lifetimes, and it all surrounds these athletes from 91 delegations. Start with Covid — what athletes have had to navigate to get here even beyond the competitive aspect of becoming the best of the best in their sport and qualifying, well, it is staggering. Quarantines for weeks, even months, intense protocols, testing, paperwork, and this all before you even get to the question of politics, always an undeniable part of the Games, but here much, much more intensely. The U.S. has issued a diplomatic boycott of these Games, not sending any government officials as a statement against China’s human rights transgressions.”

NBC Olympics contributor Andy Browne on today’s China vs. when they hosted the 2008 Olympics: “In 2008, it was the people of Beijing that made these Olympics. It was their coming out party, it was their celebration. They were joining the world, and they were so proud to show foreign visitors this spectacular new city with its futuristic architecture, its new music, its new style. China was the freest I had ever experienced it. Journalists for the first time could travel all over the country completely freely.”

NBC Olympics contributor Jing Tsu: “The world is certainly a chillier place now, and it is not just the season. In 2008, China was a new world player, it was still finding its legs on the international stage. It wanted to tell everything about itself. They had a history, they had a present. And now, I think we’re in a very different place where it has become a global dominant power. Whether you ask people in the war room, press room, boardroom or classroom, I think we all agree that China and the U.S. are in a competition of systems.”
