2023 NASCAR SEASON PREVIEW MEDIA CONFERENCE CALL HIGHLIGHTS

NBC Sports NASCAR analysts Dale Earnhardt Jr., Dale Jarrett, Jeff Burton, Steve Letarte, and NBC Sports Executive Producer Sam Flood previewed the upcoming second half of the 2023 NASCAR season on a media conference yesterday. Below are selected quotes. Click here for a full transcript.

Earnhardt Jr. on Nashville Superspeedway: “Going to Nashville for the first race…the track itself has produced some really, really great racing. I’m excited.”

Jarrett on the inaugural Chicago Street Race: “It has the opportunity to be one of the biggest events that NASCAR has had in a long, long time…the whole setting is just going to be spectacular (and) I really believe that we’re going to see some good racing on top of everything else.”

Flood: “It’s the ultimate challenge to be the first people to televise a race at a course that’s never been televised before…we’re excited, confident, and really eager to showcase the city of Chicago, the sport of NASCAR, and the opportunity to grow the sport to a new audience on an American celebration weekend.”

Burton on the uniqueness of what the Chicago race will present for drivers: “The first time they see it is the first time anyone sees it. I think that’s awesome. I think the more things we can throw at our drivers and throw at our teams to get them out of their comfort zone, it raises their level and it shows us who the very best are in certain situations.”

Letarte on the first half of the 2023 season: “Last year it was about the number of winners. This year it’s about the lack of dominance. While the number of winners may be a little less, the amount of cars running in the top five or top 10 are not. We’ve never seen a points race this close. Seven cars within 32 points. That’s less than a race. Leaving Nashville, the guy in seventh could be the points leader. It’s quite unbelievable.”

Earnhardt Jr.: “It’s been a fascinating year. I’m sure that that is going to, as it does every year, kind of crescendo and build as we get closer to the Playoffs. The pressure will mount. The risk taking will increase. The excitement that that creates for us will be plentiful.”

As part of its lead-up to the Indy 500, NBC Sports is counting down the top 10 Indianapolis 500s of all time. The countdown began with the 1967 Indy 500 ranking at No. 10 and the 2006 Indy 500 coming in at No. 9. The Top 10 list was determined by a panel of esteemed INDYCAR broadcasters, journalists and former drivers, which ranked the races based on a set of five criteria: quality of racing, memorable moments, strength of field, historical significance, and the spectacle of the race itself.

Last week, NBC Sports announced that the 1992 Indy 500 ranked No. 8 on the countdown, and the 1991 Indy 500 came in at No. 7 all-time.

NBC SPORTS TOP 10 INDIANAPOLIS 500 COUNTDOWN
Rank Year Details
No. 7 1991 Rick Mears battles and defeats Michael Andretti at the 1991 Indianapolis 500 to join the club of four-time winners.
No. 8 1992 Al Unser Jr. holds on to defeat Scott Goodyear in what became one of the closest finishes in history at the 1992 Indianapolis 500.
No. 9 2006 19-year-old Marco Andretti passes his father Michael Andretti for the lead with two laps remaining, but Sam Hornish Jr. passes Marco at the finish line in the third-closest finish in Indy 500 history.
No. 10 1967 Widely regarded to have one of the strongest fields in history, Parnelli Jones dominates the majority of the 1967 Indy 500 before slowing to a stop due to a gearbox issue with just three laps remaining. A.J. Foyt assumes the lead and then avoids a wreck on the front straightaway as he approaches the checkered flag to win third Indy 500.
