NOTES AND QUOTES – THE 44TH RYDER CUP ON USA NETWORK (DAY 1)

September 29, 2023 By admin

“Europe came in properly prepared. They have an advantage in the preparation and that was shown this morning.” – Paul McGinley on Live From the Ryder Cup

“They’re trying to solve problems with the thinking that created the problems.” – Brandel Chamblee on the United States on Live From

“Instant trouble for the United States. They got taken to the woodshed this morning.” – Paul Azinger on Europe sweeping United States 4-0 in morning session

“Nine of the American players have not played since the FedExCup. Would any of those nine players go into a major championship without playing the four weeks before?” – Paul McGinley on Live From

Day 2 Coverage on Saturday Begins at 1:30 a.m. ET on USA Network, Continues at 3 a.m. ET on NBC and Peacock

STAMFORD, Conn. – Sept. 29, 2023 – NBC Sports presented exclusive coverage of Day 1 of the 44th Ryder Cup from Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Rome, Italy, on USA Network, as well as Live From The Ryder Cup post-round coverage on GOLF Channel and Peacock.

Tomorrow’s coverage begins at 1:30 a.m. ET on USA Network, followed by coverage on NBC and Peacock at 3 a.m. ET.

Europe leads the United States 6.5-1.5 after Day 1 foursomes and four-ball matches.

On Day 1

Paul Azinger: “What a day for Europe…Europe has completely outplayed the Americans. They’ve made tons of birdies…(team captain) Luke Donald has done a great job. Their team room was designed to give them confidence and he’s done it.”

Paul McGinley on Live From the Ryder Cup on GOLF Channel and Peacock: “Europe were on fire. They were drawing inspiration out of the crowd…Europe came in properly prepared. They have an advantage in the preparation and that was shown this morning. They were on the competitive edge…and to be honest, it looked like 4-0 early on and nothing else after 4-5 holes.”

Brandel Chamblee on Live From on the United States team: “The United States look like every single time they come to a Ryder Cup – but in particular, on foreign soil – that they’re trying to start from fresh, but they’re trying to solve the problems with the thinking that created the problems. In 2018 in France, they had a very tight golf course with thick rough. They picked wild players, guys that couldn’t find fairways. They’ve done the same thing this week…they come in off form, with players that couldn’t find fairways, they looked a little tight, and the score certainly shows that.”

McGinley on Live From: “Rather than looking at the context of, ‘this was a terrible performance,’ you want your top players to step up in the heat of battle away from home. You’re going into the cauldron. This is about character and it’s about performing under a huge amount of stress and being prepared. Nine of the American players have not played since the FedExCup. Would any of those nine players go into a major championship without playing the four weeks before?”

On the afternoon four-ball matches

McGinley on Live From on Patrick Cantlay not playing in four-ball: “One of the highest-ranked players on the American team not even playing in the afternoon session down 4-0? How can you go into that session without playing him?”

Azinger on Jon Rahm’s eagles on No. 16 and No. 18: “It’s just magical to watch these guys inspired by each other, inspired by the spirt of Seve (Ballesteros)…what a glorious moment. How about that finish for Rahm.”

Azinger on Jordan Spieth following Justin Thomas’ missed putt on 16th hole: “Spieth has really not been in this match for at least 45 minutes…he has been out of sorts, and Justin Thomas has had to do it all on his own.”

Curt Byrum on Justin Thomas: “He is the emotional leader of this team.”

Azinger on Justin Thomas’ birdie on 15th hole to tie the hole: “Justin Thomas is a winner. He has been struggling this year, but he knows how to make important putts. What a gut-check…that was probably one of the hardest, most exhausting rounds of golf he’s played in some time.”

Azinger on Matthew Fitzpatrick: “He is a one-man wrecking crew. He is the most purposeful golfer in the world.”

Dan Hicks after Justin Thomas’ birdie on 6th hole: “And after almost six-and-a-half hours of golf, the U.S. finally leads in a match.”

On the morning foursomes matches

Azinger: “Instant trouble for the United States. They got taken to the woodshed this morning. This has to be a patient team with a three-day attitude.”

Azinger: “(Zach Johnson’s) message coming in was ‘less is more.’ They wanted to out-prepare the Europeans this week. But when it comes to their locker room and that sort of thing, not a lot of inspirational stuff going on…the American team room is not inspiring, but the European team room is the just the opposite, with baby pictures through the years until they’re champions… (the Americans) are in a dangerous position now…this Friday afternoon session through the years is where Europe has dominated. If that happens, then it might just be a one-day tournament.”

Jim Gallagher Jr.: “You’ve got to keep fighting and you’ve got to be ready. The guys that are currently sitting and playing this afternoon have to be ready. That’s the key to this whole situation. You have to put this in the past. Last week, the Americans were up 4-0 in the Solheim Cup and the Europeans came back, so there’s a lot of golf to be played.”

Justin Leonard: “It’s a wonderful start for the Europeans. They just seem to look a bit more comfortable. The U.S. haven’t hit a lot of great iron shots…they never got any momentum, they didn’t really play that well as a group.”

Terry Gannon: “Everything has been a struggle to this point for the U.S…every time the Americans think they have a door open, the door closes.”

Leonard: “It slams shut. These Europeans are playing so well.”

Gannon on Jon Rahm and Tyrell Hatton: “The U.S. has struggled for sure, but these two have played brilliantly.”

Justin Leonard: “Whatever Luke Donald is doing, it’s working. I would stick with my game plan. I don’t think he needs to change anything up. He’s probably thought for months about what he wants to do.”

TRANSCRIPT – NBC SPORTS RYDER CUP MEDIA CONFERENCE CALL WITH DAN HICKS, PAUL AZINGER, JIM GALLAGHER JR., CURT BYRUM AND JOHN WOOD

Last week, NBC Sports’ play-by-play commentator Dan Hicks, analysts Paul Azinger, Jim Gallagher Jr., and Curt Byrum, and on-course reporter John Wood previewed the upcoming 44th Ryder Cup at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome, Italy, on a media conference. Following are highlights from the call. Click here to read the full transcript.

Paul Azinger: “I always looked at the Ryder Cup, in my generation, my era, as being razor thin. I would compare it to being in Vegas. There’s only a 1% advantage in blackjack, but they’re building some pretty nice hotels on it…The key to winning Ryder Cup – I don’t ever believe there’s been a shortcut to it, you have to get the right players there – but you have to out-prepare the other team. Knowing the course is the key to that. Who you’re going to play with is very important ahead of time. I got stuck about three times in my Ryder Cup experience playing with a guy that I never even played a practice round with. I wanted to put an end to that with my team, for sure. Practice rounds are critical. If you know the course, you can kick back a little. If you don’t, man, it’s a panic mode to understand the course. You have to feel like you out-prepared the other guy, maybe even if you haven’t.”

Dan Hicks on Justin Thomas: “Another big storyline I believe this time around is Justin Thomas. Heart and soul of the team the past couple of times. His record speaks for itself. I think he’s 6-2-1 in those two appearances. As everybody knows, he didn’t make the Playoffs. He was picked over several other higher-ranked players. I really believe that he faces the most pressure of any captain’s pick I can think of in recent memory.”

Jim Gallagher Jr. on being on last American team to win in Europe in 1993: “I remember going out and playing Seve (Ballesteros), which to me was the pinnacle of my golf. I remember coming home and seeing my daughter Mary Langdon with a T-shirt saying ‘My daddy beat Seve.’ It took my confidence to a whole new level. It’s an experience I’ll always remember. I don’t know if Zinger remembers, before we landed on the Concorde, he said, ‘They may have created the game over here, but we perfected it.’ I was ready to parachute off the plane.”

John Wood on the Europeans’ putting preparation: “In my experience, the Europeans outwork us on the putting greens during the practice rounds…it’s a very, very disciplined approach. They work hole locations together with their partners during the practice rounds. The two caddies, the two players, they’ll all work it together…I think they have a routine that is better for figuring out putts. When you watch the Ryder Cup sometimes, the Americans, when they call their partner in or a partner’s caddie in, it looks a little awkward at times. It’s not very succinct, streamlined. They don’t read putts with somebody all year long and all of a sudden they’re doing it.”

Curt Byrum on playing vs. rest prior to the Ryder Cup: “One of the factors that I’m looking at is playing your way into the Ryder Cup week, like most of the Europeans are doing right now…most of the Americans have taken time off since THE TOUR Championship. A lot of rest for them…Considering how hilly the golf course is, how much it’s going to take stamina-wise, I think it’s going to be really interesting to see how that part of it plays out.”

Azinger on chemistry of European team: “I think that the team dynamic and the team environment in the European room will be unfazed. Just like when Jack (Nicklaus) wasn’t there anymore or when Arnold (Palmer) wasn’t there anymore, some of us guys aren’t there anymore, I think that team atmosphere in that locker room will be every bit as good if not better.”

NOTES AND QUOTES – GOLF CENTRAL LIVE FROM THE MASTERS ON GOLF CHANNEL AND PEACOCK (FINAL ROUND)

April 9, 2023 By admin

“Jon Rahm made it look simple…he had the hammer and the velvet touch.” – Brandel Chamblee on Masters Champion Jon Rahm

“He was on the front foot. He knew when to hold ‘em and when to fold ‘em…it was a clinical display of golf.” – Paul McGinley on Rahm

“if you’re a fader, you don’t mind if you over-fade it. But if you hit a double-cross, this is a hard thing to put out of your mind for the rest of the day.” – Chamblee on Brooks Koepka

STAMFORD, Conn. – April 9, 2023 – GOLF Central Live From The Masters concluded its comprehensive coverage surrounding the 2023 Masters with post-round reaction and analysis on GOLF Channel and Peacock, as Jon Rahm captured his first green jacket with a final round 69 to win by four shots.

The Masters – Final Round Leaderboard

Player Total
Jon Rahm -12
Phil Mickelson -8
Brooks Koepka -8
Jordan Spieth -7
Patrick Reed -7
Russell Henley -7

On Jon Rahm (-12, Champion)

Paul McGinley: “His golf dominated. Fourth in driving accuracy, third in greens in regulation, first in scrambling…he seized the moment. He seized the initiative. The way he played six through 12 was seizing the moment. He was on the front foot. He knew when to hold ‘em and when to fold ‘em…it was a clinical display of golf.”

Brandel Chamblee: “What he did on the second nine was clinical execution. It reminded me of another player who could anesthetize his competition…famous for red numbers and his red shirt on Sunday…Tiger Woods putting his opponents to sleep with his clinical execution…(his tee shot on 16) was the equivalent of Tom Brady hitting Gronk across the middle with a window two feet wide. Tom Brady makes it looks simple and Rahm made it look simple…the hammer and the velvet touch.”

McGinley: “He was helped as well. The three guys that were closest to him all shot well over par – Cantlay, Hovland and Koepka – the only guys that came really close to him were so far behind, they never really came close. As great as Rahm was, he never really had the pressure exerted on him.”

McGinley on Rahm joining Seve Ballesteros, Jose Maria Olazabal and Sergio Garcia as Masters champions: “When I think of Spanish players, I think mercurial players who play with their instincts, have big hearts…every one of them is out of the same mold. They’re not scientists, they don’t play the game by numbers…Brandel’s not going to put those four swings up and say they’re brilliant prototypes of swings, but what they have is ownership. They understand them and they can play them in all types of directions. This is a game of repetition, not science.”

On Brooks Koepka (-8, T-2nd)

McGinley: “Brooks was dominant over the first two days, but Jack Nicklaus always said you had to make adjustments in this game and you had to make adjustments in these last two rounds. The game changed big-time, not just in terms of pressure but in terms of how the golf course played as the wind swung to the north, the golf course played longer…he only hit seven greens in regulation in the third round and that was the lowest total in the field. With the lead in the Masters, nine players historically have gone out with a two-shot lead and only four got the job done…it’s a difficult place to be and I don’t think Brooks was really on his game.”

Chamblee: “When he double-crossed himself in the third round on 12, on 14, to start the final round on No. 1…the mistake of hitting in the right bunker on No. 4…these were tactical errors and these were technical errors…if you’re a fader, you don’t mind if you over-fade it. But if you hit a double-cross, this is a hard thing to put out of your mind for the rest of the day. That’s lingering. It speaks to an issue he had to deal with…it’s tough to make up ground when you have that shot lingering in your head.”

On Phil Mickelson (-8, T-2nd)

Chamblee: “This place has a way of turning back the clock. It’s done it so many times…he’s been one of the greatest players of all-time. Won on the PGA TOUR as an amateur, won as a senior…Phil’s also done a lot of things that have made you scratch your head over the years, and that’s what makes him so interesting.”

McGinley: “I don’t know what to make of it. Who would have predicted this performance? This guy has played no good. Absolutely no good. Miles away…he had one good round last week…and over this weekend, he ignited. He hit more greens than anyone else in the field by two today. How do you figure that? I think you just put it down to the sheer genius that Phil Mickelson is…when he got the bit between his teeth today, he rained iron shots down on the flag one after the other…you’ve got to give him so much credit…I could feel out there listening to the crowd, changing from ‘I’m not sure I want to see him doing well,’ to by the end when he came off the 18th green, people saying, ‘You know what? Well done, Phil.’ And I certainly felt the same way.”

NOTES AND QUOTES – GOLF CENTRAL LIVE FROM THE MASTERS ON GOLF CHANNEL AND PEACOCK (THIRD ROUND)

April 8, 2023 By admin

“At this stage, you’d have to say it’s a two-horse race. They’ve really separated themselves from the field.” – Paul McGinley on Brooks Koepka and Jon Rahm

“How are you going to beat a guy who is hitting his irons like that, scrambling like that, and doesn’t have a three-putt?” – Brandel Chamblee on Koepka

*Programming Alert* – GOLF Central Live From The Masters Airs Sunday Morning at 7 a.m. on GOLF Channel and Peacock

STAMFORD, Conn. – April 8, 2023 – GOLF Central Live From The Masters continued its comprehensive coverage surrounding the 2023 Masters with post-round reaction and analysis on GOLF Channel and Peacock following third round play on Saturday. Play was suspended Saturday afternoon due to inclement weather.

GOLF Central Live From The Masters will preview the remainder of the third and final rounds of the 2023 Masters with a 90-minute edition on Sunday morning at 7 a.m. ET on GOLF Channel and Peacock, prior to the resumption of play at 8:30 a.m. ET.

Sunday’s regularly-scheduled primetime Live From The Masters will air on GOLF Channel and Peacock following tournament coverage, providing post-round reaction and analysis from Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Ga.

The Masters – Third Round Leaderboard

Player Total Thru
Brooks Koepka -13 6
Jon Rahm -9 6
Sam Bennett (a) -6 6
Patrick Cantlay -5 13
Matthew Fitzpatrick -5 11
Collin Morikawa -5 7
Viktor Hovland -5 7

*third round in progress

On Brooks Koepka (-13, Leader)

Brandel Chamblee: “You’re looking at a man who through the first two rounds had zero three putts. He has putted beautifully. His iron play gets the star treatment, but he was in the top five of strokes gained putting. How are you going to beat a guy who is hitting his irons like that, scrambling like that, and doesn’t have a three-putt?”

Paul McGinley: “From tee to green, he has been brilliant…from what I have seen so far, he seems to be on it. He seems to be well-concentrated and focused, his game is brilliant…it all seems to be there. At this stage, you’d have to say it’s a two-horse race. They’ve really separated themselves from the field. The Irish bookies are giving 90 percent probability that (Koepka or Rahm) will win. They don’t give money away over there, believe me (laughing).”

Jaime Diaz on potential impact of a Koepka win: “I already view Brooks as having one of the best streaks ever. If he can extend that and have longevity…he’s up there with at least among modern players, the top four or five.”

On Jon Rahm (-9, 2nd)

Chamblee: “It’s going to come down to who manages their miss the best, and I thought the 4th hole was pretty telling…the one place you really couldn’t afford to miss it was in the right bunker, or worse yet, right of it…Jon Rahm missed the green well to the right…I realize he’s a great player and he’s done great things, but I’m talking about playing better on Saturday or Sunday than the golf that got him there…it’s going to come down to who manages the misses the best and scrambles the best.”

On Scottie Scheffler (-3, T-14th)

Chamblee: “He has just putted horribly. He’s last in the field. He’s hit it fine…watching him four-putt the ninth green in the second round from about 12 feet, I couldn’t believe it.”

NOTES AND QUOTES – SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER WINS THE 2023 PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP ON NBC AND PEACOCK

March 12, 2023 By admin

“It was Tiger-esque…he cruised. He controlled the tournament.” – Paul McGinley on Scheffler on Live From The PLAYERS

“He doesn’t care about the other players on the golf course. He doesn’t care who’s playing with him…he just cares about controlling the controllables.” – Brad Faxon on Scheffler

“It was a no-doubter today once he got going.” – Paul Azinger on Scheffler

“This is just bubble golf. He’s playing golf in a bubble. Completely locked in.” – John Wood on Scheffler

STAMFORD, Conn. – March 12, 2023 – NBC Sports presented exclusive final round coverage of The PLAYERS Championship from The Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., on NBC and Peacock.

Scottie Scheffler (-17) won by five strokes, joining Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus as the only players to simultaneously hold PLAYERS Championship and Masters titles.

Golf Central Live From The PLAYERS followed with post-round coverage on GOLF Channel and Peacock.

Mike Tirico hosted coverage while Dan Hicks handled play-by-play duties and Paul Azinger served as analyst. Curt Byrum and Brad Faxon called holes while John Wood, Notah Begay III and Smylie Kaufman served as on-course reporters. Damon Hack handled reports and interviews.

Rich Lerner, Brandel Chamblee and Paul McGinley anchored Live From The PLAYERS post-round coverage. Following are notes and quotes from today’s coverage.

PLAYERS Championship – Final Results

Player Total
Scottie Scheffler -17
Tyrrell Hatton -12
Tom Hoge -10
Viktor Hovland -10
Hideki Matsuyama -9

ON SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER (-17, Champion)

Paul Azinger: “The way he did it, the way he handled his nerves…what an impressive player that he’s turned out to be. It was a no-doubter today once he got going…we watched him lose that big lead at the Tour Championship and while we don’t root for anyone, it was nice to see him close it out.”

Paul McGinley on Live From: “At risk of using that term too much, it was Tiger-esque…you knew he had another gear. He cruised, he didn’t make mistakes…he controlled the tournament. A classic performance.”

Brandel Chamblee on Live From: “An incredible run that he is on…he’s won six of the last 27 events. He’s changed in ways that statistics can’t really bear out, but it is fun to watch.”

John Wood: “When Hatton made that charge and got in, it really felt like Scottie Scheffler got sharper. Sometimes you can’t help but react to who you’re playing with, but once Hatton got in, it felt like Scottie said, “Ok, now I know what I have to do.’”

Brad Faxon: “He doesn’t care about the other players on the golf course. He doesn’t care who’s playing with him…he just cares about controlling the controllables. I think the round he played with McIlroy at the Tour Championship, he learned he got a little out of sorts playing with Rory.”

Curt Byrum: “Tee to green, Scottie Scheffler has absolutely taken this field apart this week. He’s been so strong and he didn’t even really need his putter this week. It’s been okay, but nothing special.”

Wood following birdie on No. 12 to increase lead to six: “This is just bubble golf. He’s playing golf in a bubble. Completely locked in.”

Dan Hicks on Scheffler’s third birdie in a row on the 10th hole: “Just when you think he’s hearing some noise, he makes his own noise with three in a row.”

ON MIN WOO LEE (-8, T-8th)

Azinger on Lee hitting it in the water on No. 4: “That’s probably the worst wedge shot he’s hit in five years.”

Wood on Lee hitting it in the water on No. 4: “There’s nothing that drives a professional crazy more than making the smart play and then messing it up.”

Hicks following Lee’s drive left on 11: “He just has no confidence in the driver…this championship is spiraling away in a hurry and it came down to the driver. It’s got him in jail on 11.”

ON TYRRELL HATTON (-12, 2nd)

Azinger on Hatton shooting 29 on the back nine: “That’s some of the best pressure golf you will ever see.”
