NOTES AND QUOTES – THE 2024 PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP ON GOLF CHANNEL AND PEACOCK (FIRST ROUND)

March 14, 2024 By admin

“Iron play is more important than anything else and he has really been struggling in that regard. He told me exactly what he’s been working on (this week) and that he’d worked the problems out.” – Brandel Chamblee on Rory McIlroy on Live From The PLAYERS

“We are waiting on the ShotLink details on the club toss.” – Mike Tirico on Adam Hadwin throwing his club in the water on the 18th hole

STAMFORD, Conn. – March 14, 2024 – NBC Sports presented comprehensive of the first round of The PLAYERS Championship from The Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., on GOLF Channel and Peacock. Golf Central Live From The PLAYERS followed with post-round coverage.

Dan Hicks, Mike Tirico and Steve Sands handled play-by-play duties, while Brad Faxon, Gary Koch and Notah Begay III served as analysts. John Wood, Smylie Kaufman and Roger Maltbie served as on-course reporters, while Damon Hack handled reports and interviews.

Today’s coverage included Roger Maltbie’s live interview with Jack Nicklaus winner of the inaugural PLAYERS Championship in 1974, as the event celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

Rich Lerner, Brandel Chamblee and Paul McGinley anchored Live From The PLAYERS post-round coverage. Following are notes and quotes from today’s coverage.

PLAYERS Championship – First Round Leaderboard

Player Total
Rory McIlroy -7
Xander Schauffele -7
Wyndham Clark -7
Nick Taylor -6
Matt Fitzpatrick -6

ON TPC SAWGRASS STADIUM COURSE AND CONDITIONS

Koch on TPC Sawgrass: “It’s such a fun course to watch the players on. Like we have seen today, good things and bad things can happen in such a short time.”

Koch on the greens: “The average green size is 5,500 square feet. That’s relatively small for courses on the PGA TOUR. No surprise that iron play – strokes gained approach – usually a very important stat going towards winning the championship.”

Xander Schauffele to Damon Hack on when to be aggressive or conservative: “The scare of a bogey comes when you miss the fairways here. The rough is pretty thick, shockingly thick in some spots, so you just have to keep it on the short grass.”

Faxon on the keys to winning at TPC Sawgrass: “I learned to play here not using the driver a lot. A lot of holes are like No. 4 where if you just get in the fairway, you have a short iron in and then you have to chip and putt.”

McGinley on the ideal scoring conditions today: “The weather was a big part of it and the golf course is presented in unbelievably good condition this year. I was disappointed with the softness of the greens. A big way to hold players to their standards is to have the greens a bit firmer. When you give players of these quality, ideal weather conditions, they are going to take advantage.”

JACK NICKLAUS WITH ROGER MALTBIE ON THE FIRST TEE

Maltbie: “Did you envision the spectacle and importance The PLAYERS would have in the game today?”

Nicklaus: “We did not know but I did want to win it because Deane (Beman) wanted to make it as big of a tournament as we could make it. I said, ‘You want to get it on my list, then make it a major.’”

Maltbie: “Could you imagine in 1982 that it would become this big, beautiful park that it is today?”

Nicklaus: “It’s very pretty and the first tee here has totally changed. Everything is different but it’s in beautiful shape, it’s beautifully manicured. It’s the kind of golf course where on a day like today you’ll shoot good scores.”

ON RORY MCILROY (-7, Co-Leader)

Tirico on McIlroy: “Even with putting two balls in the penalty area off the tee today, Rory joins Justin Thomas as the last two players out of five total who have had 10 birdies in one round at The PLAYERS.”

Chamblee on McIlroy’s improved iron play on Thursday: “A lot of hard work went into this, and he had to iron some things out. This championship season, iron play is more important than anything else and he has really been struggling in that regard. He told me exactly what he’s been working on and that he’d worked the problems out.”

McIlroy to Hack on his round: “Much improved from Sunday at Bay Hill. Put a lot of work in over the last three days and honestly feel like I saw a lot of progress out there. It was a continuation of other things I have been doing well.”

ON WYNDHAM CLARK (-7, Co-Leader)

Kaufman: “His recovery ability has been incredible today, just the precision and power he plays the game with right now, it’s so impressive.”

ON SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER (-5, T-6th)

Hicks on Scheffler’s recent success with the putter: “He eliminated the line, it’s more of a feel. Added the mallet putter and it has just been a tremendous change.”

Maltbie on Scheffler: “The level of ball-striking that he carries from week-to-week is very impressive. Even when you don’t think he’s playing that well, you look up at the scoreboard and he’s -4.”

ON ADAM HADWIN (+3, 125th)

Begay III on Hadwin tossing his club into the water on the 18th hole: “That just tells you how this golf course can rock you off your knockers.”

Tirico on Hadwin: “We are waiting on the ShotLink details on the club toss.”

FOOTBALL NIGHT IN AMERICA PREVIEWS NFL SUPER WILD CARD WEEKEND INCLUDING TONIGHT’S DOLPHINS-CHIEFS PEACOCK EXCLUSIVE AND BROWNS-TEXANS ON NBC/PEACOCK

January 13, 2024 By admin

“I don’t know if I’ve ever been at a game this cold in my life.” – Tony Dungy on weather conditions in Kansas City

“One thing to look for in pre-game warmups is how many layers do they have on, what types of shoes do they have on…ball security, slipping and sliding will be an issue…I walked out on the field and it is as hard as a brick.” – Rodney Harrison on Dolphins-Chiefs

Special Edition of Football Night in America Airs Tonight Leading into Dolphins-Chiefs Immediately Following Conclusion of Browns-Texans

Jared Goff and Detroit Lions Host Matthew Stafford and Los Angeles Rams Sunday at 8 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock; Football Night in America Airs at 7:30 p.m. ET

Ahmed Fareed hosted FNIA from NBC Sports’ Studio 1 in Stamford, Conn. He was joined by three-time Super Bowl champion Devin McCourty, former NFL quarterback Chris Simms, and NFL Insider Mike Florio.

NBC Sports host Michael Smith, NBC Sports’ lead NFL columnist Peter King, and fantasy sports industry pioneer Matthew Berry previewed Browns-Texans and provided reports from NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.

Hall of Fame head coach Tony Dungy and two-time Super Bowl winner Rodney Harrison joined co-host Jac Collinsworth to preview Dolphins-Chiefs and provide reports from GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo.

Mike Tirico (play-by-play), Jason Garrett (analyst), Kaylee Hartung (sideline reporter), and Terry McAulay (rules analyst) will have the call for Dolphins-Chiefs tonight exclusively on Peacock.

Noah Eagle (play-by-play), Todd Blackledge (analyst), Kathryn Tappen (sideline reporter) and McAulay have the call of Browns-Texans this afternoon on NBC and Peacock.

  • Peter King’s feature on 49ers LB coach Johnny Holland, who is currently battling multiple myeloma.

Following are highlights from this afternoon’s Football Night in America on NBC and Peacock:

ON BROWNS

McCourty on defense: “This Browns defense is in your face all day and that’s what Houston is going to have to deal with … ‘everybody, go get the quarterback.’ For Stroud and the offense, they have to protect him and he’ll have to get rid of the ball. You can’t hold the ball against this front.”

Simms: “I will say this one more time to Cleveland – be conservative (on offense). You have a Super Bowl-caliber defense…run the ball. Don’t throw it 45 times with Joe Flacco.”

ON TEXANS

Simms on QB C.J. Stroud: “He’s mature. For a rookie quarterback, he understands the nuances of the game – when to throw it away, when to take a sack…he’s found the balance between aggressive and reckless, and that’s rare for someone this young…I do think that in this game, the Texans need to be more aggressive than the Browns.”

McCourty on Stroud: “The confidence that he has when he drops back in the pocket and he sees something, he says, ‘I’m going to let it rip because I know my arm, my talent, my receivers won’t let me throw an interception.’ That’s why this team believes in him and they follow him.”

ON DOLPHINS-CHIEFS

Dungy on weather conditions: “I don’t know if I’ve ever been at a game this cold in my life…I coached in Tampa, a warm-weather place, for a long time. We played some cold weather games against (New England) and I’d give my best Bud Grant speech, ‘Don’t worry about the cold, let’s go up there and get the job done,’ and then we’d fall apart.”

Harrison on weather conditions: “This is the coldest I have ever been at a football game…one thing to look for in pre-game warmups is how many layers do they have on, what types of shoes do they have on…ball security, slipping and sliding will be an issue…it’s so cold that my mouth is frozen, it’s difficult to talk…I walked out on the field and it is as hard as a brick.”

Harrison on Dolphins WR Tyreek Hill: “Anytime he gets the ball, anytime he’s open the Chiefs have to have two or three guys flying around. The Chiefs know that Miami wants to get him the ball quick and in open space.”

Simms on the Dolphins’ offense: “They’ve lost their mojo. Some teams have figured out how to defend them. I’ve never seen this so pronounced…when the (opposing defense) has two safeties deep, they run the ball and they can’t throw it. When it’s one safety deep, they can’t run the ball at all but they can throw it…they’ve got to be patient with that tonight.”

Dungy on Chiefs RB Isiah Pacheco: “Their most important player tonight is going to be Isiah Pacheco. Give him the ball and let him pound. This man runs with attitude.”

ON RAMS-LIONS

Simms on the Rams: “I’m interested in the approach by the Rams in this one. We know that both offenses are very good. The Lions’ defense is not great. I look at it and say the Rams might be able to get into a shootout, but I don’t know if they’re going to feel comfortable with their defense against the Lions’ offense. That’s where they have Kyren Williams, maybe the best running back in football not named Christian McCaffrey…do they play ball control, take a shot every now and then, but control the clock to keep the Lions off the field?”

Harrison on the Lions: “This is going to be an emotional game. Offensive coordinator Ben Johnson – it’s important he doesn’t get caught up in that emotion and he runs the football instead of having a scoring contest against (Rams head coach) Sean McVay.”

ON COWBOYS-PACKERS

Simms: “(Cowboys head coach) Mike McCarthy has all the pressure and expectations around him. ‘Oh no, it’s my old squad coming to town.’ The Packers and first-year starter Jordan Love – that’s going to be a fun one. Big time NFC showdown.”

Simms on the Packers: “What can this Packers offense do against this Dallas defense? That will be part of slowing down the Cowboys offense. Aaron Jones has three straight games with 100-plus yards…there is some heat at receiver too, they can beat man-to-man coverage, so that would be their avenue to pull off an upset.”

ON STEELERS-BILLS

Simms on Bills: “Josh Allen is one of the greatest one-man shows in football. Running the ball, scrambling, laser beams down the field…the Bills are coming into the playoffs as hot as anyone in the NFL and they’ve basically been playing playoff football since November.”

ON EAGLES-BUCCANEERS

McCourty: “The Eagles are stumbling into the playoffs. After losing to the Giants last week, they’re still figuring it out…it has a bit of a desperation feel, that nobody knows what’s next.”

ON COACHING CAROUSEL

Florio: “We know one of the big names Jim Harbaugh, last year he was interested in the Chargers job, and it wasn’t open. This year he is reportedly meeting with the Chargers and other NFL teams looking for new coaches. Then there is Bill Belichick, hovering over everything. Atlanta is believed to be very interested, but the only question is if the interest is mutual.”

Florio on Eagles’ head coach Nick Sirianni: “If you talk to enough people around the league, there’s something to see here. There is something going on and if they lose Monday night with the better team in Tampa Bay…Bill Belichick is out there, just something to keep an eye on.”

Three-time Super Bowl referee Terry McAulay will serve as rules analyst for all three games.

NBC Sports’ Innovative Partnership with NFL Continues

This weekend marks the continuation of NBC Sports’ innovative partnership with the NFL, which introduced flexible scheduling as Sunday Night Football debuted on NBC in 2006. Two years later, for the 2008 season, Sunday Night Football Extra on NBCSports.com and NFL.com marked the first time complete NFL games were widely available in the U.S. via live online streaming. SNF Extra featured additional camera angles, in-game highlights, picture-in-picture technology, live statistics and other interactive elements.

In 2012, NBC Sports and the NFL partnered on the first live stream of the Super Bowl in the U.S., a four-point New York Giants victory over the New England Patriots. For two games in 2017, NBC Sports presented Thursday Night Football with SkyCam providing the broadcast’s primary-viewing angle, utilizing a “dual” SkyCam system. In 2022, NBCUniversal hosted the first-ever “Super Gold Sunday,” airing Super Bowl LVI and the Beijing Winter Olympics on NBC and Peacock. Most recently, as part of the Peacock Holiday Exclusive in December, NBC Sports and the NFL collaborated on the first-ever commercial-free (fourth) quarter.

Football Night in America, the most watched studio show in sports since its 2006 debut, begins its Super Wild Card Weekend coverage on Saturday at 3 p.m. ET. On Sunday, FNIA begins at 7:30 p.m. ET.

FNIA is hosted for the remainder of the season by Ahmed Fareed, and features three-time Super Bowl champion Devin McCourty and former NFL quarterback Chris Simms, as well as Hall of Fame head coach Tony Dungy, 2024 Pro Football Hall of Fame finalist and two-time Super Bowl champion Rodney Harrison, NFL insider Mike Florio, fantasy sports industry pioneer Matthew Berry, and co-host Jac Collinsworth. Maria Taylor is on parental leave.

FOOTBALL NIGHT IN AMERICA PREVIEWS NFL WEEK 16 INCLUDING BENGALS-STEELERS ON NBC/PEACOCK AND TONIGHT’S BILLS-CHARGERS PEACOCK HOLIDAY EXCLUSIVE

December 23, 2023 By admin

“Two days before Christmas, how fitting is this – Rudolph is on the field!” – Ahmed Fareed on Steelers starting QB Mason Rudolph

“All I can think of are the words of the great Michael Scott of The Office – ‘Oh, how the turntables have turned.’” – Todd Blackledge on Steelers’ and Bengals’ recent performances

“I think they’re contenders. You have to respect the run game, the quarterback and the play-action pass.” – Rodney Harrison in the Bills

Special Edition of Football Night in America Airs Tonight Leading into Bills-Chargers Immediately Following Conclusion of Bengals-Steelers

STAMFORD, Conn. – Dec. 23, 2023 – NBC Sports’ Football Night in America previewed the Week 16 NFL schedule leading into today’s NFL holiday doubleheader, beginning with this afternoon’s Bengals-Steelers game on NBC and Peacock, followed by tonight’s first-ever Peacock exclusive NFL regular-season game between the Bills and Chargers.

Ahmed Fareed hosted FNIA from NBC Sports’ Studio 1 in Stamford, Conn. He was joined by former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett, three-time Super Bowl champion Devin McCourty, former NFL quarterback Chris Simms, fantasy sports industry pioneer Matthew Berry, and NFL Insider Mike Florio. Steve Kornacki was also in the studio to break down playoff scenarios. A special edition of Football Night in America will air tonight on NBC and Peacock immediately following the conclusion of Bengals-Steelers, leading into Bills-Chargers. • Bills QB Josh Allen with Michael Smith in the latest edition of ‘Gets It.’

***

Following are highlights from this afternoon’s Football Night in America on NBC and Peacock:

ON STEELERS

Fareed on QB Mason Rudolph: “Two days before Christmas, how fitting is this – Rudolph is on the field!”

Blackledge on the Steelers: “All I can think of are the words of the great Michael Scott of The Office – ‘Oh, how the turntables have turned.’ A month ago, the Steelers left the field 7-4, they had just put up their best offensive numbers of the season and were coming home for back-to-back winnable home games…now on a three-game losing streak, a third-string quarterback and they’re fighting for their playoff lives.”

Dungy on future of head coach Mike Tomlin: “I played there, I coached there, I know how the Rooneys think. They’ve had three coaches in 45 years and never fired a coach in that time. Here’s what Mr. Rooney would think – ‘I could go out and get somebody who’s 51 years old and taken two teams to the Super Bowl, he knows my team, he knows my city – wait that’s who I have already.’ That is what’s going to happen in Pittsburgh.”

Simms on Steelers’ defensive struggles: “There’s nothing they really do well. Man-to-man, they don’t stop the run, they’re not great at zone…I think Teryl Austin and Mike Tomlin are doing a phenomenal job covering a lot of holes because I look at this defense and I go, ‘What do you expect?’ Some of these guys are not starting-caliber NFL defensive players. They’ve got Minkah Fitzpatrick, T.J. Watt, Alex Highsmith, Cam Heyward is at the end of his career…they need a total rebuilding of that defense talent-wise and it’s ‘Strugglesville’ for Pittsburgh on defense.”

ON BENGALS

Simms on WR Tee Higgins: “Get the ball to No. 5…he’s a No. 1 talent, he’s one of those guys who can beat you deep, throw it up and 50-50 balls are more like 70-30 with him…they can’t play man-to-man defense in Pittsburgh.”

Harrison: “I’m really excited about Trey Hendrickson. He is their best player on defense. He plays both the pass and run with the same enthusiasm. His job tonight – supply constant pressure.”

Harrison: “I am a big fan of their secondary. They’re young guys that are very talented, not a lot of money being spent in the secondary right now, but these guys are going to be good in the future.”

McCourty: “What I love about Jake Browning is that he’s confident and he knows what the defense is in…he’s not just taking what’s easy, he’s taking what the read is telling him to do and it’s leading to good football.”

Simms on the Bengals: “They’re showing that they’re more than just Joe Burrow…they are tough, gritty, and battle-tested and we’re seeing that right now.”

ON BILLS

Harrison on offensive improvement: “How long have we been asking for them to run the football? It opens up the offense. It takes pressure off of Josh Allen and it helps him avoid taking those big hits…I think they’re contenders, right below the Baltimore Ravens. You have to respect the run game, the quarterback and the play-action pass.”

Dungy on Joe Brady replacing Ken Dorsey as offensive coordinator: “I’m not normally a fan of midseason coaching changes, but this one has changed the mindset of this team. They believe they can win games being physical and they proved it last week against the Cowboys.”

ON CHARGERS

Simms: “They’ve got one of the crown jewels in all of football right now with Justin Herbert. We’re in awe of his talents. I would say, ‘Let’s hire an offensive head coach. Let’s go all-in on that department.’”

McCourty: “The biggest thing to me is getting a leader of men…you need a guy who can come in and lead. This team that we watched take the field last week didn’t have much effort and didn’t believe in what they were doing. They need to find that coach that when he comes into the room, they want to run through the wall.”

Dungy: “They need a dominant personality either as the coach or the general manager. I would recommend getting a veteran, polished general manager. I’m going to give you a thought Spanos family – Bill Polian. He has put together three Super Bowl winning teams – hire him and let him hire your next coach.”

ON THE PLAYOFF PICTURE

Kornacki on the Seahawks: “The Seahawks are knocking on the door. Just to put into perspective how much Monday night’s win (vs. Philadelphia) changed the trajectory of their season…they’ve got three games left and it’s a very manageable three-game stretch. Win these three games and they would need either the Vikings or Rams to lose just one game.”

Kornacki on the Buccaneers: “Besides the Rams themselves on Thursday night, there was no bigger winner coming out of that game than the Bucs…it’s very simple for them in terms of making the playoffs. Three games left – just win two of three, any combination, they win the division and make the playoffs.”

Kornacki on the Jaguars: “If the Jags lose again, they could be in some real trouble…the Jags, Texans and Colts are all 8-6 and the Jags have all of the tiebreakers. But if they lose to the Bucs and either the Colts or Texans win, they leapfrog the Jags. We take a team that we were talking about just a couple of weeks ago as a No. 1 seed that is suddenly out of first place in the division and a big question mark to even make the playoffs.”

ON 49ERS

Simms on the offense and QB Brock Purdy: “The offense is on fire, the weapons galore. Deebo (Samuel), (Christian) McCaffrey, (George) Kittle, (Brandon) Aiyuk – they’re incredible and he is running this offense like Joe Montana used to run it.”

ON RAVENS

Simms: “Here’s my big thing with the Ravens – run the ball. Stop justifying Lamar Jackson’s contract…first-round receivers, Odell Beckham Jr.’s contract…take a lesson out of the playbook of the 49ers. They have the QB in Purdy who has thrown it less than everybody else in football and they have the most explosive offense in football.”

ON BUCCANEERS

Simms: “They said, ‘To hell with the run game, we’re going to play through Baker Mayfield’s right arm.’ And that’s what they’ve been doing lately. He’s got weapons with Rachaad White in the backfield, Mike Evans, Chris Godwin…they are about throwing the ball down the field and Baker is carrying that team.”

ON BROWNS

Simms: “I love what they’re doing with Joe Flacco but let’s rein it in a little bit. He’s throwing it 45 times a game…you’ve got a Super Bowl-caliber defense in Cleveland. It’s okay to punt the ball every once in a while, throw the ball away…Kevin Stefanski, just rein it in a little.”

ON EAGLES

McCourty: “This offense and Jalen Hurts have to step up. They showed up last year by making the big plays in the big moments. Last week they had a chance to end the game against the Seahawks and they couldn’t do it.”

ON DOLPHINS

McCourty on matchup vs. Cowboys: “This team needs to build its confidence. They need a win at home against the Dallas Cowboys to believe that they really are the best team in the AFC.”

ON FALCONS

Garrett: “My Airing of the Grievances is with the Atlanta Falcons. They have three Top 10 picks in their skill game – Bijan Robinson, Kyle Pitts and Drake London. Make these guys tired on Sunday night. Wear them out. Don’t take them out of the game. Make it all go through them. If they do that, I think they have a chance down the stretch.”

At 8-6, the Bills are right in the AFC playoff hunt. They continued their march towards the playoffs last week by beating the Dallas Cowboys, 31-10, to win their second consecutive game following a 20-17 win over Kansas City in Week 14. Allen threw for a touchdown and rushed for a score, his NFL-record 10th game of the season with both a passing and rushing touchdown. Running back James Cook had a career day, amassing 221 scrimmage yards (179 rushing, 42 receiving) – the most by a Bills player since Fred Jackson in 2009 (227) – along with two touchdowns.

The Chargers fell to the Las Vegas Raiders, 63-21, last Thursday. In his first career NFL start, quarterback Easton Stick threw for 257 yards and three touchdowns, while wide receiver Joshua Palmer had 113 receiving yards and a score on four receptions. Five-time Pro Bowl WR Keenan Allen, who missed last week’s game due to injury, leads the NFL in receptions (108) and is fourth in receiving yards (1,243). This will be the Chargers’ first game under interim head coach Giff Smith.

Saturday night’s matchup will be the 41st overall meeting between the two teams, with the Chargers holding a 25-13-2 advantage in the all-time series.

Mike Tirico will call Bills-Chargers alongside 17-time Emmy Award winner and recent Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame inductee Cris Collinsworth (analyst). Melissa Stark will report from the sidelines; three-time Super Bowl referee Terry McAulay is the SNF rules analyst.

NFL HOLIDAY DOUBLEHEADER: BENGALS AT STEELERS AT 4:30 P.M. ET ON NBC, PEACOCK AND UNIVERSO

With both teams in the thick of the AFC playoff hunt, the Bengals and Steelers will meet for the 109th time on Saturday afternoon at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Steelers hold a 69-39 advantage in the all-time series between the AFC North foes.

The Bengals defeated the Minnesota Vikings, 27-24, in overtime last Saturday led by QB Jake Browning’s 324 passing yards and two touchdowns. The first-year starter is the first quarterback in NFL history to throw for more than 1,000 passing yards with a 75 percent completion rate in his first four career starts. WR Tee Higgins had 61 yards and two touchdown catches on four receptions, while RB Joe Mixon had 61 scrimmage yards (47 rushing, 14 receiving) and a rushing touchdown in the win.

The Steelers lost to the Indianapolis Colts, 30-13, last Saturday. 2021 Defensive Player of the Year and four-time All-Pro linebacker T.J. Watt recorded two sacks, tying his brother, J.J. Watt, for the fifth-most multi-sack games by a player in his first seven seasons (21) since 1982, when the individual sack became an official statistic. Additionally, WR Diontae Johnson had 62 receiving yards and a touchdown catch on four receptions.

NBC Sports’ Big Ten announce team of Noah Eagle (play-by-play), former Steelers QB Todd Blackledge, who played on the team from 1988-1989 (analyst), and Kathryn Tappen (reporter) will call Bengals-Steelers. McAulay serves as rules analyst.
