UFL Notes 10-1 Jeff Garcia Quotes

October 1, 2010 By admin

QUOTES FROM JEFF GARCIA
UNITED FOOTBALL LEAGUE NATIONAL CONFERENCE CALL

The mouthwatering showdown between quarterback Jeff Garcia and running back Ahman Green of the Omaha Nighthawks (1-0) and quarterback Daunte Culpepper and his Sacramento Mountain Lions (1-1) will kickoff at 7.30pm local time on Saturday, October 2.

The ‘Rumble at Rosenblatt’ will air live on HDNet with Kenny Rice and Paul Maguire calling the action at 8.30pm EDT following an HDNet pregame show at 8pm EDT.

Here are Jeff Garcia’s thoughts on being a member of the Omaha Nighthawks:

On playing in the UFL:

“I really came in without too many expectations, first of all. I really didn’t know what to expect. I really just looked at it as an opportunity for 2½-to-3 months to play the game of football. We’ve only been through one game from the Omaha side of things, but it’s been a real positive. For me, it’s really brought me back to the root of the game, the reason I play this game. It’s really brought us back to why we play the game, because we love the game.

“I don’t know it’s a feeling of being shocked or anything like that. We still have the want and desire to play the game. This was our next option, and fortunately for us, we were given an opportunity to join a team and be a leader of a team. We want to be starters. We want to be players who can contribute to their teams.

“We’ve been able to come back here and play football. We all love to play. Their concern is getting on the field and having the opportunity to compete and play.

On what he brings to the Nighthawks:

“The biggest trait that I have within myself is my competitive spirit. As much as I’ve always been a team guy and supportive of the starter…my competitive drive is all about being on the field and contributing.

“For me to come back here and have the chance to be a starter, have a chance to really be a leader…has been a very positive experience for me.”

On his impressions of the UFL:

“Everything that’s taking place with the league so far is exciting. There’s so much room for growth, but with what has happened with the first two weeks of the league, there’s been some fantastic finishes and some great individual play. I think you can’t take away from the fact that you have guys in this league like Daunte Culpepper and Josh McCown, who have solid NFL experience. For the fans who are in tune with what’s going on, and hopefully those who are football fans who aren’t as aware…hopefully, it creates that sort of attention that allows this league to grow.

On the fans in Omaha:

“The fans have been awesome. They love their football. As long as we don’t conflict with a University of Nebraska game, things will be good for us. The people of Omaha, to be able to affiliate themselves with a professional football team…they’ve embraced it completely.

On facing Daunte Culpepper this weekend:

“I have to focus on what my responsibility is, and who I’m going up against. Likewise, Daunte has to go against our defense. It’s one of those things where, obviously…we’re well-aware of each other, and I’m well-aware of some of the greatness he’s had on the football field, and the quality of player he’s been and can be, and he definitely showed that last week.”

UFL Notes: 10-1 Daunte Culpepper Quotes

October 1, 2010 By admin

QUOTES FROM DAUNTE CULPEPPER

Here are Daunte Culpepper’s thoughts on the match up:

“I think it’s just great to be playing against Jeff once again. I guess it’s a little surprising, but we’ve got an opportunity play and put our talents into good use.

“Jeff has always been a great player. He’s had a knack for making a big play. It doesn’t surprise me when he has a good game like that, because that’s the type of player he’s always been.”

“It’s absolutely great to be able to compete against a guy like Jeff. He’s trying to get a win, just like you’re trying to win. You’re on their turf, and you’ve got the same agenda, that’s trying to win. I’m glad to be a part of it, but our main goal is to get the win and their main goal is to get the win.”

“It’s a recipe for a good game.”

On both Culpepper and Garcia engineering game winning drives last week:

“We didn’t plan it, but it works out like that sometimes. That’s the UFL. I’m glad to be a part of it, and I think it’s going to be a great game this weekend.”

On playing in the UFL under his former Vikings coach:

“I think it’s been a great transition. Coach Dennis Green, he runs his team the same way he did when I was drafted in Minnesota. That’s the good thing about it. I’m glad to be a part of something new, and what better why to be successful at it than with coach Green.

“You get to go out and you get to compete against guys with the same goal you have, and that’s to win the game. We’ve just got to out there and try to execute our gameplan, and see what happens.

“If I was going to be part of the league, I wanted to play for coach Green. It’s been great. It’s like we never parted, because I know what he expects from his players, his team. I fit into my role well here.

“Whenever you get a chance to showcase yourself, it’s a great thing. Now, they can see that this guy isn’t injured, and he can make the plays he made before he was injured. I feel great, and I try to get better every day.

“Every game is different. It depends – sometimes, you have to run the ball 30 times a game to win the game, and sometimes you have to pass 40 or 50.”

“This league is definitely a league that has players who can play. I truly believe there’s more than 1,500 good players in America.”

On the opening day loss in Hartford and the win over Florida:

“The main difference from game 1 to game 2 was our execution was much higher. We did a better job on third down…and that was because, most of the time, you get better from game 1 to game 2.”

On what to expect in Omaha against the Nighthawks, and perhaps another tight finish:

“You talk about the play that can win the game. In a game like this, I’m going to be harping to our guys that you never know when that play is. Every play, 100 percent, because you never know when that play is.

“I’m just delighted, and very proud and excited to be a part of the UFL. It’s going to continue to gain notoriety. I’m very honored and glad to be a part of it.”

The United Football League’s second season is underway and on Friday night, the much-anticipated debut of the Omaha Nighthawks will take place at Rosenblatt Stadium against the Hartford Colonials (1-0) (HDNet, 8pm EDT). On Saturday night, professional football returns to Sacramento, California, for the first time in 16 years when the Mountain Lions (0-1) play host to the Florida Tuskers (1-0) (Versus, 11pm EDT).

*************************************************

IT’S ALL ABOUT CLOSE, COMPETITIVE GAMES

The Week 1 matchup between the Florida Tuskers and the Las Vegas Locomotives continued a positive trend in the UFL – close, competitive games.  Six of the last 10 games in the league, dating back to the 2009 Premiere Season, have been decided by a touchdown or less. Three such games have been authored by the Tuskers and Locos, whose last three meetings have been decided by 3, 3 and 7 points.

ATTENDANCES RISING

The 14,384 fans attending the home opener of the Hartford Colonials on Saturday afternoon was the highest regular season attendance in UFL history.  That figure beat the 14,292 from October 8, 2009 when the California Redwoods visited the Las Vegas Locomotives.  Only the 2009 Championship Game drew more fans.  The Omaha Nighthawks have their sights set on a new attendance record this coming weekend.

United Football League Second Season Kicks Off Saturday, September 18 In Hartford And Las Vegas

September 14, 2010 By admin

The United Football League begins its second season on Saturday, September 18 with a day-night doubleheader.  The season kickoff will feature a matchup of two returning franchises with new identities, as the Sacramento Mountain Lions travel to Rentschler Field to take on the Hartford Colonials (NESN, 2:30 PM ET). The day’s second game is the rematch of the inaugural UFL Championship Game, as the Florida Tuskers take on the Las Vegas Locomotives at Sam Boyd Stadium (HDNet, 11 PM ET).

The Omaha Nighthawks, the UFL’s first-ever expansion team, have a bye week and will make their debut September 24 at Rosenblatt Stadium.

*************************************************

IT’S ALL ABOUT ‘U’

The United Football League concluded a busy offseason of not only improving its product on the field, but improving it off the field as well.

The league’s digital media presence has increased rapidly, as more than 45,000 online followers represent a marked improvement from the 6,000-7,000 followers at the end of the 2009 Premiere season.

The league’s revamped Web site – www.ufl-football.com – has increased written content, photos and video, a new online store and a new agents’ portal.

As for the fans’ game day experience, those coming to UFL games will be treated to pregame festivities and halftime entertainment. And, as always, players in the UFL will be available for autographs following each game.

On the field, the league has done some tweaking to its rulebook to improve game play. In addition to 2009 rules changes such as giving both teams possession in overtime before a winner is declared and elimination of the tuck rule, some new rules for 2010 include expanding protection for defenseless players and the play being declared dead if the runner’s helmet comes off.

As for what to expect on the field, here is a look at some of the key demographic numbers from the 259 players on the initial 52-man rosters for each team:

  • 120 players (46.3 percent) have played at least one regular-season game in the National Football League.
  • 234 players (90.3 percent) have had some kind of NFL experience (regular season, practice squad, training camp, tryout, etc.)
  • The average NFL career of a UFL player is 3.4 seasons.
  • 92 players (35.5 percent) have UFL experience.
  • 158 players (61.0 percent) finished their collegiate playing career at a Bowl Championship Series school.
  • The average age of a UFL player is 26.8 years.
*************************************************

THREE TO WATCH

The improved talent on UFL rosters is undeniable. Here are three players to keep a close eye on as the 2010 season begins – one on offense, one on defense and one on special teams:

FLORIDA TUSKERS: Quarterback BROOKS BOLLINGER, the reigning UFL Most Valuable Player, returns to guide a Tuskers offense which led the UFL in 2009 in points and total yards… Ex-Florida Gator cornerback KEIWAN RATLIFF joins Florida following a six-year NFL career with four teams… Kicker NICK NOVAK was a late-training camp addition, and brings experience in both the NFL and NFL Europe.

HARTFORD COLONIALS: Running back ANDRE DIXON returns home after running for 1,093 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2009 for the University of Connecticut… Safety RYAN GLASPER is playing in his home state following a two-year stint in the Canadian Football League… Collegiate special teams ace JASON CHERY excelled as a kickoff returner, punt blocker and gunner at Louisiana-Lafayette.

LAS VEGAS LOCOMOTIVES: ADAM BERGEN led all UFL tight ends in catches (16) in 2009… Middle linebacker EDGERTON HARTWELL is playing for his hometown Locos after a six-year NFL career with the Baltimore Ravens and Atlanta Falcons… Punter DANNY BAUGHER is back for a second season after leading the league in gross punting average (43.5) and net punting average (38.4) in 2009.

OMAHA NIGHTHAWKS: Quarterback JEFF GARCIA is starting his 17th professional season in his third pro league… Linebacker CATO JUNE brings seven seasons of NFL experience with him to the Nighthawks… Return specialist WILLIE ANDREWS led the UFL in both kickoff return (22.1) and punt return (12.6) average in 2009.

SACRAMENTO MOUNTAIN LIONS: Quarterback DAUNTE CULPEPPER begins his 12th professional season, and will make his first opening-day start in four years… Linebacker DONTARRIOUS THOMAS returns after leading the franchise in tackles last fall with 53… Kicker FABRIZIO SCACCIA connected on a 68-yard field goal in his semi-pro playing career.
