October 13, 2010 By admin

FORMER NFL QUARTERBACK JOE THEISMANN NAMED PRESIDENT AND OWNER OF THE FLORIDA TUSKERS OF THE UFL

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – ORLANDO, FL – Saturday, October 9, 2010 – Former NFL quarterback JOE THEISMANN was today announced as President and Owner of the Florida Tuskers of the United Football League.

The former Washington Redskins legend, who was selected for two Pro Bowls during an illustrious 12-year NFL career, announced his Tuskers commitment during the live Versus telecast of his team’s road game against the Hartford Colonials in Week 4 of the UFL season.

“I am excited about the opportunity and I am excited about the league,” said Theismann.  “This is a venture that I can take from the ground up in a beautiful place in Orlando.  I wanted the Orlando-based franchise.

“I feel like it’s a great place for football fans.  This is an opportunity to be a part of a football organization run the way I’d like to see it run.”

Having purchased ownership in the club, Theismann will lead the drive to secure additional local ownership in the Tuskers.  In keeping with league policy, financial details of the agreement were not disclosed.

“We continue to look for people who come from inside the industry as they are some of the best qualified to lead our clubs,” said United Football League Commissioner MICHAEL HUYGHUE.

“Joe is an entrepreneur and has a great passion for the game, which positions him ideally to lead our team.  He brings a unique experience and viewpoint that we feel is missing in the sport.”

Theismann has worked as an analyst for ESPN on NFL broadcasts and works for the NFL Network on their show Playbook.

He graduated in 1971 from the University of Notre Dame, where he received All-American honors and led the Fighting Irish to consecutive Cotton Bowls and was runner-up to Jim Plunkett in the Heisman Trophy balloting.  In 2003, Joe was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.  After being drafted by the Miami Dolphins and Major League Baseball’s Minnesota Twins, Joe chose to play in the Canadian Football League for the Toronto Argonauts from 1971-1973.  In 1974, he joined the Washington Redskins.

A 12-year NFL veteran, Joe played in 163 consecutive games from 1974-1985 and holds Redskins records for passing yardage (25,206), completions (2,044) and attempts (3,602).  A two-time Pro Bowl selection and Pro Bowl MVP, Joe led Washington to a 27-17 victory over the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl XVII.

Joe was selected the NFL Man of the Year in 1982 for his community service and dedication to the health and welfare of children.  He won the league’s 1983 Most Valuable Player Award for leading the Redskins to an NFL-record 541 points and a second consecutive Super Bowl appearance.  His career ended abruptly in 1985 after sustaining a badly broken leg during a Monday Night Football game against the New York Giants on national television.

A much sought after motivational speaker, he also oversees a popular Washington DC restaurant called ‘Joe Theismann’s’.

It’s Virginia! – Fan Poll Decides That The United Football League Expansion Franchise Will Carry Host State’s Name

October 5, 2010 By admin

Football fans asked to help select nickname from Destroyers, Tritons or Navigators

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Virginia Beach, Va. – Monday, October 4, 2010 – It’s Virginia!  Football fans who took part in an online poll to help name the sixth United Football League franchise voted in their thousands for ‘Virginia’ as the name the team will proudly bear when kicking off the 2011 season.

Virginia was chosen by a margin of three to one over the alternative Hampton Roads option from votes cast between September 19 and October 2.  The ‘Your Town, Your Team, Your Name – You Make the Call’ fan poll was hosted by The Virginian-Pilot, PilotOnline.com, Radio 102.1 The Game FanHouse.com, and UFL-Football.com.

UFL Virginia team General Manager DOUG WILLIAMS announced the result of the first part of the competition to name the region’s expansion team live on his radio show on 102.1 The Game on Monday afternoon.  Williams also unveiled a new shortlist list of three team nicknames that proved the most popular from five original options and fans’ own suggestions:

Virginia Destroyers
Virginia Tritons
Virginia Navigators

The second part of the competition now asks fans to vote for their favorite name from the shortlist of three.  The poll will run until Sunday, October 17 through The Virginian-Pilot, PilotOnline.com, Radio 102.1 The Game FanHouse.com, and UFL-Football.com.

Virginia team president Ed Reynolds said of the poll results: “As a native Virginian I am proud to have the State’s name so strongly associated with our team.  We asked the fans to vote to give them a voice when it came to naming their team and they preferred Virginia.  Now I look forward to the fans’ opinions helping us become either the Destroyers, Tritons or Navigators.”

Naming options explained:

Destroyers
A type of warship, well known in recent Naval history, the current class of destroyers for the U.S. Navy has been billed as the ton-for-ton most powerful warship in history.  Several destroyers are based out of Norfolk, VA.  Their arms can range from anti-submarine to anti-aircraft to cruise missiles.  Also offers dual meaning on the football field.
Tritons
Triton is a Greek God known as the “messenger of the seas”.  The Triton was also the name of one of the more famous of the U.S. submarines, based out of Norfolk, Virginia, so the name encompasses both the U.S. Navy and sea-based mythology.
Navigators
Within the modern U.S. naval fleet, navigators are Surface Warfare Officers and in the Air Force are tasked with weapon deployment.  Navigators have a long record within the naval and aerial field, both of which have strong ties to the Hampton Roads region.

The winning Virginia team name will be announced during the 2010 UFL season.

UFL Notes 10-1 Jeff Garcia Quotes

October 1, 2010 By admin

QUOTES FROM JEFF GARCIA
UNITED FOOTBALL LEAGUE NATIONAL CONFERENCE CALL

The mouthwatering showdown between quarterback Jeff Garcia and running back Ahman Green of the Omaha Nighthawks (1-0) and quarterback Daunte Culpepper and his Sacramento Mountain Lions (1-1) will kickoff at 7.30pm local time on Saturday, October 2.

The ‘Rumble at Rosenblatt’ will air live on HDNet with Kenny Rice and Paul Maguire calling the action at 8.30pm EDT following an HDNet pregame show at 8pm EDT.

Here are Jeff Garcia’s thoughts on being a member of the Omaha Nighthawks:

On playing in the UFL:

“I really came in without too many expectations, first of all. I really didn’t know what to expect. I really just looked at it as an opportunity for 2½-to-3 months to play the game of football. We’ve only been through one game from the Omaha side of things, but it’s been a real positive. For me, it’s really brought me back to the root of the game, the reason I play this game. It’s really brought us back to why we play the game, because we love the game.

“I don’t know it’s a feeling of being shocked or anything like that. We still have the want and desire to play the game. This was our next option, and fortunately for us, we were given an opportunity to join a team and be a leader of a team. We want to be starters. We want to be players who can contribute to their teams.

“We’ve been able to come back here and play football. We all love to play. Their concern is getting on the field and having the opportunity to compete and play.

On what he brings to the Nighthawks:

“The biggest trait that I have within myself is my competitive spirit. As much as I’ve always been a team guy and supportive of the starter…my competitive drive is all about being on the field and contributing.

“For me to come back here and have the chance to be a starter, have a chance to really be a leader…has been a very positive experience for me.”

On his impressions of the UFL:

“Everything that’s taking place with the league so far is exciting. There’s so much room for growth, but with what has happened with the first two weeks of the league, there’s been some fantastic finishes and some great individual play. I think you can’t take away from the fact that you have guys in this league like Daunte Culpepper and Josh McCown, who have solid NFL experience. For the fans who are in tune with what’s going on, and hopefully those who are football fans who aren’t as aware…hopefully, it creates that sort of attention that allows this league to grow.

On the fans in Omaha:

“The fans have been awesome. They love their football. As long as we don’t conflict with a University of Nebraska game, things will be good for us. The people of Omaha, to be able to affiliate themselves with a professional football team…they’ve embraced it completely.

On facing Daunte Culpepper this weekend:

“I have to focus on what my responsibility is, and who I’m going up against. Likewise, Daunte has to go against our defense. It’s one of those things where, obviously…we’re well-aware of each other, and I’m well-aware of some of the greatness he’s had on the football field, and the quality of player he’s been and can be, and he definitely showed that last week.”

UFL Notes: 10-1 Daunte Culpepper Quotes

October 1, 2010 By admin

QUOTES FROM DAUNTE CULPEPPER

Here are Daunte Culpepper’s thoughts on the match up:

“I think it’s just great to be playing against Jeff once again. I guess it’s a little surprising, but we’ve got an opportunity play and put our talents into good use.

“Jeff has always been a great player. He’s had a knack for making a big play. It doesn’t surprise me when he has a good game like that, because that’s the type of player he’s always been.”

“It’s absolutely great to be able to compete against a guy like Jeff. He’s trying to get a win, just like you’re trying to win. You’re on their turf, and you’ve got the same agenda, that’s trying to win. I’m glad to be a part of it, but our main goal is to get the win and their main goal is to get the win.”

“It’s a recipe for a good game.”

On both Culpepper and Garcia engineering game winning drives last week:

“We didn’t plan it, but it works out like that sometimes. That’s the UFL. I’m glad to be a part of it, and I think it’s going to be a great game this weekend.”

On playing in the UFL under his former Vikings coach:

“I think it’s been a great transition. Coach Dennis Green, he runs his team the same way he did when I was drafted in Minnesota. That’s the good thing about it. I’m glad to be a part of something new, and what better why to be successful at it than with coach Green.

“You get to go out and you get to compete against guys with the same goal you have, and that’s to win the game. We’ve just got to out there and try to execute our gameplan, and see what happens.

“If I was going to be part of the league, I wanted to play for coach Green. It’s been great. It’s like we never parted, because I know what he expects from his players, his team. I fit into my role well here.

“Whenever you get a chance to showcase yourself, it’s a great thing. Now, they can see that this guy isn’t injured, and he can make the plays he made before he was injured. I feel great, and I try to get better every day.

“Every game is different. It depends – sometimes, you have to run the ball 30 times a game to win the game, and sometimes you have to pass 40 or 50.”

“This league is definitely a league that has players who can play. I truly believe there’s more than 1,500 good players in America.”

On the opening day loss in Hartford and the win over Florida:

“The main difference from game 1 to game 2 was our execution was much higher. We did a better job on third down…and that was because, most of the time, you get better from game 1 to game 2.”

On what to expect in Omaha against the Nighthawks, and perhaps another tight finish:

“You talk about the play that can win the game. In a game like this, I’m going to be harping to our guys that you never know when that play is. Every play, 100 percent, because you never know when that play is.

“I’m just delighted, and very proud and excited to be a part of the UFL. It’s going to continue to gain notoriety. I’m very honored and glad to be a part of it.”

The 31-year-old quarterback was a third round selection of the Arizona Cardinals in the 2002 NFL Draft and has played in 47 NFL games including 31 starts with the Cardinals, Detroit Lions, Oakland Raiders and Carolina Panthers.

Defensive honors went to Las Vegas Locos linebacker BRANDON MOORE, who in his second season with the Locos marked his team’s opener against the Florida Tuskers by recording 7.5 total tackles (6 solo), a sack and a tackle for loss in a 27-20 reverse.

In 2009, Moore ranked third on the Locos with 35 tackles, a sack, a pass defended and 2 forced fumbles.  He is a veteran of 88 NFL games with the San Francisco 49ers, New England Patriots and Arizona Cardinals.

On his UFL debut, Florida Tuskers kicker NICK NOVAK kicked a UFL-record 54-yard field goal to earn a 17-10 second quarter lead in his team’s 27-20 win over the Las Vegas Locos to earn the Special Teams Player of the Week award.  Novak connected on two field goals, the other coming from 23 yards and split the uprights on all three extra points.

Novak joined the Tuskers having been in San Diego Chargers training camp this summer and has spent time with the Washington Redskins, Arizona Cardinals and Kansas City Chiefs.  He was the all-time leading points scorer (393) in Atlantic Coast Conference history and fifth all-time in the NCAA when he graduated from Maryland in 2004.

The previous best UFL long field goal was a successful 53-yard field goal by Las Vegas Locos kicker Graham Gano, now of the Washington Redskins, in a 30-17 win over the California Redwoods, which also came on opening day in 2009.

United Football League Announces Launch Of Boxee App To View 2010 Season Games

September 17, 2010 By admin

1.3 Million Boxee users now able to stream live football in HD with the UFL

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE JACKSONVILLE, FL – Friday, September 17 – The United Football League announced today a partnership with Boxee and the release of a customized UFL Boxee App.  The partnership will allow all 2010 UFL games to be broadcast live to the Boxee community, as well as providing all games on demand and as highlight reels.

Boxee’s free software and devices allow people to enjoy video, music, and photos from the Internet in an interface that’s designed for a TV and remote. This truly connected digital entertainment experience lets them stream content from websites such as Netflix, MLB.TV, Comedy Central, Pandora, Last.fm, and flickr.  Viewers can also share information about what they are watching with friends on social networks including Facebook and Twitter so they will be able to share links to live games while they watch.

“Boxee is always working to add more great sports content to the platform,” said Boxee’s Vice President of Marketing, Andrew Kippen. ”With the UFL now on board, we can bring exciting live football games in HD to our users from a league that promises innovative technology and in-depth behind the scenes looks to add even more to the games.”

The UFL provides high-quality professional football during a traditional fall season while embracing innovation and fan interaction.  The five-team league has teams in Florida, Hartford, Las Vegas, Omaha and Sacramento.

“We are extremely excited to partner with Boxee to bring our games to a wider audience,” said Nation Hahn, UFL Director of Digital Media Enterprises.  “We have been committed to serving audiences that don’t normally have access to live football from the very beginning and we stream almost all our games over the Internet. Partnering with Boxee to make it easy for fans to watch Internet games from the couch was an easy decision once we saw the platform’s powerful interface in action.”

Boxee App developer Henry Sztul said: “Boxee is a fantastic service to bring Internet video into your living room.  The UFL Boxee app will allow people to watch live games, games already played, and older video content on any TV in their home connected to a PC running Boxee or a Boxee-enabled device like the upcoming Boxee Box by D-Link.  The ultimate goal is to provide a state-of-the-art sports viewing experience that cannot be found anywhere else online.   As a developer, this has been an exciting project.  Sports content like this just does not exist outside of traditional cable, and there are so many directions this could go technologically.”

About Boxee: Boxee is changing the way people experience home entertainment by bringing TV shows, movies, videos, and music from the Internet to the TV. Boxee’s free software can be easily downloaded to any computer or embedded into TVs, Blu-Ray players, game consoles, and set top boxes. Boxee has quickly established itself as the best way to bring entertainment from different sources into one place – anything from a local collection of movies, TV shows, music, and photos, to streaming content from websites like Netflix, MLB.TV, Pandora, Last.fm, and flickr. Users can also discover new entertainment from their friends and share recommendations with social networks like Facebook and Twitter. More than a million people use Boxee to enjoy their entertainment. Learn how you can join them at www.boxee.tv.
