EXAMINES ADVANCES IN PROFESSIONAL BULL RIDING

WHEN THE EMMY®-WINNING SHOW RETURNS MARCH 25 ON HBO

REAL SPORTS WITH BRYANT GUMBEL, TV’s most honored sports journalism series, continues its 20th season with more enterprising features and reporting when the show’s 204th edition debuts TUESDAY, MARCH 25 (10:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT), exclusively on HBO.

Other HBO playdates: March 25 (3:45 a.m.), 28 (9:30 a.m., 5:00 p.m.) and 29 (10:45 a.m., 12:45 a.m.), and April 3 (1:30 p.m., 8:00 p.m.), 6 (9:30 a.m.) and 9 (7:00 p.m., 1:30 a.m.)

HBO On Demand® availability: March 26-April 14

Segments include:

*Gaming the System. In 2003, the NCAA instituted an academic reform initiative to reemphasize a commitment to the education of all student-athletes, mandating that schools graduate a majority of each team, or face punishments ranging from a loss of scholarships to a ban on postseason play. Later that year, the NCAA eliminated the requirement that student-athletes have a minimum SAT score of 820, which was determined to hurt the chances of minority acceptance in athletic programs. Lower admission standards, coupled with higher graduation requirements, meant that many top-flight schools needed to commit resources for learning specialists to ensure their student-athletes measured up.

What resulted, however, fell short of expectations. REAL SPORTS’ investigative team spent six months vetting the multi-million dollar academic advising centers, which operate as “schools within schools” and are responsible for enabling student-athletes with elementary educations to graduate from big-time universities. Correspondent Bernard Goldberg reports on some alarming discoveries. Among the programs examined in the story are the University of North Carolina, University of Memphis and University of Oklahoma.

Producer: Josh Fine.

*The Sisters Schimmel. A force in women’s basketball, the University of Louisville hopes to return to the Final Four for the second straight year after earning a three-seed in this year’s tournament. The Cardinals are led in part by two sisters who hail from a little-known basketball hotbed in the United States: Native American reservations. The older sibling, All-American senior guard Shoni Schimmel, is widely expected to be a top pick in the WNBA draft next month. Junior guard Jude Schimmel is the team’s reliable sixth woman.

The Schimmels grew up on the Umatilla reservation in Pendleton, Ore., where basketball is considered their national pastime. But while basketball talent, tradition and passion are abundant on reservations, success stories are not. Native players have been stereotyped as undisciplined on and off the court, while some refuse to leave the reservation’s insular world, both factors that have discouraged big-time recruiting. In this REAL SPORTS/Sports Illustrated segment, correspondent Jon Frankel sits down with the Schimmel sisters to learn about their journey from the reservation to the spotlight of high-profile college basketball.

Producer: Jason Samuels.

*Run to Health. In her late 20s, former professional tennis player Diane Van Deren was diagnosed with epilepsy after suffering a grand mal seizure. To control and cope with her condition, she began running whenever she felt the aura of another oncoming event. Her life changed forever at 37, when Van Deren underwent a partial ring temporal lobectomy, which removed the portion of the brain causing the frightening and debilitating seizures. But the brain damage caused by a decade of repeated trauma was permanent.

Unexpectedly, she acquired the ability to run like never before. As she trains daily, Van Deren’s damaged brain retains little short-term information. She often has no idea where or how far she runs, which can be helpful in a race of more than 100 miles, but not so useful when she needs to recall daily details like where she parked her car. REAL SPORTS correspondent Andrea Kremer heads to Colorado to learn more about the 53-year-old Van Deren, now one of the world’s top ultra-marathoners, and understand how her brain limitations have facilitated her success.

Producer: Chapman Downes.

*Thrill Ride. Featuring real-life cowboys who give their all to remain atop a 2000-pound wild bucking animal, bull riding is widely recognized as the most dangerous eight seconds in sports. When REAL SPORTS first visited the Professional Bull Riding (PBR) tour in 2009, the debate over requiring riders to wear helmets to help prevent concussions and other traumatic brain injuries was heating up. Recently, correspondent Jon Frankel headed to the 2014 PBR season opener in New York City, featuring the world’s top 35 bull riders. REAL SPORTS’ cameras captured a new PBR, in which most of the top riders have traded in their Stetsons for helmets and new riders are required to wear them. Frankel asks whether bull riding is now a kinder and gentler sport, and what this means for its maverick brand.

Producers: Nisreen Habbal, Tim Walker.

ESPN to Cover Entire 2014 NCAA Men’s Division I Ice Hockey Championship

March 24, 2014 By admin

frozenfour_ncaa_espnJohn Buccigross Unveils the Numerical Order of No. 1 Seeds on Twitter, Hosts Selection Show, and Calls Regional and Frozen Four Action

ESPN will cover the entire 2014 NCAA Men’s Division I Ice Hockey Championship which includes 12 regional games from four sites between March 28-30 and the Frozen Four semifinals and finals in Philadelphia on April 10 and 12. In regional action, ESPNU will televise eight games, including the Midwest, Northeast and West regional finals. ESPN2 will televise the East regional final and West regional semifinal. ESPN3 will exclusively carry a Northeast and Midwest regional semifinal. On Thursday, April 10, ESPN2 will televise the Frozen Four semifinals and on Saturday, April 12, ESPN will televise the Frozen Four Championship Game. Every game of the tournament will be available on WatchESPN.

ESPN NCAA Men’s Hockey Tournament Commentators

ESPN’s lead hockey play-by-play commentator John Buccigross teams up with lead hockey analyst Barry Melrose to call the action in the East regional (Bridgeport, Conn.) and the Frozen Four.   This is the second year the tandem has worked the tournament together, including their second Frozen Four.  Quint Kessenich will be the reporter with Buccigross and Melrose at both the regional and Frozen Four.

Buccigross was an integral part of ESPN’s regular-season hockey coverage this season, calling a majority of ESPN’s BIG TEN telecasts. Additionally, the SportsCenter anchor has developed a passionate hockey following on Twitter (@Buccigross) through his consistent college hockey dialogue with fans (#cawlidgehawkey) and by showcasing pond hockey throughout the country.

Melrose, who has been with ESPN  17 of the last 18 years and has been an analyst for several Frozen Fours, played 11 seasons in the NHL before leading the Los Angeles Kings to the 1993 Stanley Cup Finals as head coach.

Other ESPN broadcast tandems: Joe Beninati and Darren Eliot in the Midwest regional (Cincinnati, Ohio), Joe Davis and Billy Jaffe in the Northeast regional (Worcester, Mass.), and Clay Matvick and Sean Ritchlin in the West regional (St. Paul, Minn.).

ESPN and NCAA Collaborate to Reveal No. 1 Seeds on Twitter Prior to NCAA Hockey Championship Selection Show

On Sunday, March 23 at noon ET, ESPNU will televise the NCAA Hockey Championship Selection Show. In a unique, online collaboration, ESPN and the NCAA will announce the four No. 1 seeds and which region they will play in one-hour prior to the show.

At 11 a.m., @NCAAIceHockey will tweet out – in alphabetical order – the four No.1 seeds. Moments later, after receiving the official bracket from the NCAA, Buccigross will take to his twitter account to announce the numerical  order of the No.1 seeds and the region in which they will be located in.

Buccigross and Dave Starman anchor the 30-minute Selection Show to announce the other 12 teams which make up the field with all the matchups. Select head coaches will join the show after their team has been named to the field. Fans are encouraged to participate by tweeting questions and comments to the @ESPNU handle, with a portion of them being answered on air.

Buccigross Takes over @NCAAIceHockey Handle During Conference Championship Games

On Saturday, March 22 — the night before the Selection Show — Buccigross will take over the @NCAAIceHockey handle to conduct a live twitter chat starting at 8 p.m. As six conferences are in the midst of their championship game, with an automatic bid to the tournament on the line, Buccigross will interact with fans, answer their questions and react to the live game action.

NHL RIVALS – FLYERS-RANGERS – TUESDAY, 10:30 P.M. ET ON NBCSN

This week’s episode of NHL Rivals, which debuts Tuesday night at 10:30 p.m. ET following Red Wings-Blue Jackets on NBCSN, features the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Rangers, a rivalry that stretches back more than four decades. The episode touches on the fierce physicality between the two teams, and iconic moments in their storied rivalry, including Dave Brown’s cross-check of Tomas Sandstrom in the 1987 Stanley Cup playoffs, a battle of superstars between Eric Lindros and Mark Messier, and the 2011 NHL Winter Classic.

Following are excerpts from this week’s episode of NHL Rivals.

Former Ranger forward Ron Duguay on playing in Philadelphia: “I can always remember the bus ride from New York to Philly. Everything before the bridge (into Philadelphia) was guys playing cards, there was laughing, there was music…then all of a sudden, we could see The Spectrum, and everything became quiet.”

Former Flyer goaltender and current assistant GM Ron Hextall on Dave Brown’s cross-check of Tomas Sandstrom in 1987 playoffs: “I had the best seat in the house for that…I was actually pretty happy about that at the time, because Sandstrom deserved everything he got.”

CSN Washington’s Chuck Gormley on rivalry between Flyers’ Eric Lindros and Rangers’ Mark Messier: “Eric Lindros had Mark Messier’s card tucked away in his wallet. He grew up loving Mark Messier, and when those two went at it in the playoffs in ’97…that was the passing of the torch to Eric Lindros. That playoff series was a real indication of two legends going in different directions.”

espn-logoOnly One Perfect Bracket Remains through Round of 64 in Women’s Tournament Challenge

ESPN Men’s Tournament Challenge

ESPN.com’s Men’s Tournament Challenge presented by Acura and Allstate revealed no perfect brackets remaining out of more than 11.01 million submitted after Stephen F. Austin’s win over VCU knocked out the last three remaining perfect brackets on ESPN.com during the second day of competition.  The first four days of competition featured 13 upsets through 48 games, resulting in only three brackets that correctly picked every Sweet Sixteen team and 99 brackets that went 15 for 16.  An analysis of “bracket busters” in more than 11.01 million brackets submitted reveals:

  • No. 8 Kentucky shocks undefeated no. 1 Wichita State
    • 29.2% of brackets picked the Wildcats to advance to the Sweet Sixteen
    • Of the 76.3% of brackets that predicted Kentucky vs. Wichita State in the Round of 32, 28.6% of them correctly picked the Wildcats to upset the Shockers
    • Kentucky busted 5.9% of brackets that picked Wichita State to win it all
  • No. 11 Dayton upsets no. 6 Ohio State and no. 3 Syracuse
    • 19.7% of brackets picked the Flyers to win over the Buckeyes
    • Only 3.9% had Dayton reaching the Sweet Sixteen
    • Dayton busted 3.6% of brackets that had Syracuse winning it all
  • No. 10 Stanford survives and advances against no. 7 New Mexico and no. 2 Kansas
    • Stanford was picked by 38% of brackets to prevail over the Lobos, knocking out 1,920 perfect brackets in the process
    • Of the 36.4% of brackets that accurately predicted a Stanford vs. Kansas matchup, only 3.3% of them correctly picked the Cardinals to win over the Jayhawks
    • Stanford busted 5.5% of brackets that had Kansas winning it all
  • No. 7 Connecticut prevails in overtime vs. no. 10 St. Joseph’s, upsets no. 2 Villanova
    • 20.6% of brackets predicted that the Huskies would advance to the Sweet Sixteen
    • Of the 68% of brackets that accurately predicted a Connecticut vs. Villanova matchup, 19.2% of them correctly picked the Huskies to win over the Wildcats
    • Connecticut busted 1.2% of brackets that had Villanova winning it all
  • No. 14 Mercer stuns in win over no. 3 Duke
    • Only 3.3% of brackets predicted the Bears to upset the Blue Devils
    • Mercer busted 5.3% of brackets that had Duke winning it all
  • No. 11 Tennessee defeats no. 6 Massachusetts, advances past Mercer to Sweet Sixteen
    • 43.3% of brackets accurately predicted the Vols to win over the Minutemen
    • Only 4.9% of brackets correctly picked Tennessee to make it to the Sweet Sixteen
    • Of the 1.7% of brackets that predicted a Tennessee vs. Mercer match-up, 50.6% picked the Vols to win
  • No. 12 seeds Stephen F. Austin, Harvard and North Dakota State
    • Just 4.2% of brackets correctly picked all three no. 12 seeds to defeat their no. 5 opponents in the Round of 64
    • Stephen F. Austin was the least popular pick of the three with just 20.9% of brackets predicting they would win over no. 5 VCU
    • Harvard’s upset over no. 5 Cincinnati was the most popular pick of the three, predicted by 31.3% of brackets
    • 23.6% of brackets correctly picked North Dakota State over no. 5 Oklahoma

Taking a look at picks of teams advancing to the Sweet Sixteen by region:

·         South – Only 9,206 brackets (0.1%) accurately picked Florida, UCLA, Dayton and Stanford

·         Midwest – Just 117,220 brackets (1.1%) correctly predicted Kentucky, Louisville, Tennessee and Michigan

·         West – 8.8% of brackets accurately picked Arizona, San Diego State, Baylor and Wisconsin

·         East – 9.8% of brackets correctly predicted Virginia, Michigan State, Iowa State and Connecticut

Looking ahead to the Sweet Sixteen, FiveThirtyEight’s NCAA Tournament predictions reveal:

  • South – Florida is a heavy favorite to advance to the Elite Eight with a 72% chance, while Dayton vs. Stanford splits the odds with an even 50/50 chance of winning
  • Midwest – Louisville and Michigan are predicted to move on from the Sweet Sixteen with a 68% and 53% chance, respectively

  • East – Connecticut vs. Michigan State is the most likely match-up in the Elite Eight, with a 52% and 51% chance to move on, respectively

Fans submitted more than 11.01 million brackets to ESPN.com’s Men’s Tournament Challenge, an all-time record high surpassing last year’s record of nearly 8.15 million brackets by 35.1 percent.  At the peak period, fans registered 11,983 brackets per minute (199 brackets per second).  Among them was President Barack Obama, who currently sits in the 73.7th percentile with a rank of 2,895,198 in the men’s tournament.  He was one of 11.2% of brackets that correctly picked no. 12 seeds Harvard and North Dakota State to advance in the Round of 64.  His Final Four picks heading into the Sweet Sixteen are still in play (Florida, Michigan State, Arizona and Louisville).  Additionally, the Mike & Mike Werner Ladder Bracket Challenge group includes a total of 985,000 brackets, by far the largest group in Men’s Tournament Challenge history.

Through the Round of 64 and Round of 32, Men’s Tournament Challenge and NCAA Men’s Basketball content on ESPN.com across desktop, mobile Web and the ESPN Tournament Challenge and SportsCenter apps logged an average minute audience of 373,000, up 11 percent compared to the same time period last year.  Across platforms, there were more than 5.5 million unique visitors per day to Men’s Tournament Challenge (up 21 percent) and 9.9 million unique visitors per day to the NCAA Men’s Basketball section across ESPN.com, mobile web, and the SportsCenter app (up 21 percent).

A full round-by-round breakdown of picks can be found under “Who Picked Whom” on ESPN.com, listing the percentage of participants who selected each team to win in each respective round.  At the end of the tournament, all Men’s Tournament Challenge entries that finish in the top 1% are entered in a random drawing for the $10,000 Best Buy Gift Card prize.

ESPN Women’s Tournament Challenge

The “National Bracket” in ESPN.com’s Women’s Tournament Challenge presented by Capital One showed more fans picked no. 1 seeds Notre Dame, Tennessee, Connecticut and no. 2 seed Stanford to reach the Final Four than any other teams.  After two days of competition, only one bracket remains perfect in Women’s Tournament Challenge on ESPN.com.  An analysis of all brackets submitted reveals:

  • 13% of brackets correctly picked no. 12 BYU to upset no. 5 North Carolina State, including President Obama
  • 29% of brackets picked no. 10 Florida State to win against no. 7 Iowa State
  • 42% of brackets accurately predicted no. 9 Arizona State over no. 8 Vanderbilt

President Obama’s women’s bracket went 23 for 32 in the Round of 64 and currently sits in the 18.5th percentile.  His Final Four picks are still in play (Connecticut, Stanford, Notre Dame and Louisville).

Entries that finish in the top 1% of the Women’s Tournament Challenge are entered in a random drawing for a $5,000 Best Buy Gift Card

ESPN Play-by-Play Commentators for 2014 FIFA World Cup

March 20, 2014 By admin

FIFA-World-Cup-2014_Logo-espnIan Darke leads team of six accomplished match announcers in Brazil

Led by Ian Darke, a team of top-tier international soccer television voices – Jon Champion, Adrian Healey, Daniel Mann, Fernando Palomo and Derek Rae – will serve as match commentators for ESPN’s English-language presentation of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in the United States this summer.  In all, ESPN will employ six play-by-play commentators for the 64 matches (June 12 – July 13), two more than it utilized for South Africa 2010.

Darke, who was named ESPN’s lead play-by-play commentator in January, has earned acclaim as the premier English-language voice for marquee soccer telecasts in the United States. He will call the opener, final and all U.S. National Team matches, among others.

Among the additions, Champion has 20 years of broadcast experience in the United Kingdom with BBC, ITV and ESPN UK. He will make his debut calling the World Cup for a U.S. audience in Brazil. Mann, who voiced FIFA’s 3D World Cup telecasts carried by ESPN 3D four years ago, returns to call the quadrennial event exclusively for ESPN.

The popular Healey and Rae have worked past FIFA World Cup tournaments for ESPN, among other major tournaments. Palomo, who has become a very familiar voice calling matches in both English and Spanish for ESPN, will make his World Cup debut in Brazil.

“The commentator team we have assembled for the 2014 FIFA World Cup has the strong potential to be even better than the celebrated team of 2010,” said Jed Drake, ESPN’s executive producer, 2014 FIFA World Cup. “Individually and collectively, they rank among the top commentator teams on any event we have ever televised.”

Bios:

Champion is one of the United Kingdom’s most respected football announcers. He is heard in the UK and around the world on a weekly basis commentating on the top matches in English football including the Premier League, a league he has worked on since its inception.

Darke joined ESPN in August 2010 after his critically acclaimed work on the network’s award-winning presentation of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The past four years, he has voiced some of the seminal moments in televised soccer in the United States.

Healey is the lead voice for MLS on ESPN. The 2014 World Cup will be his seventh major international tournament for ESPN. He previously called the World Cup in 2006 and 2010, the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2007 and 2011, and UEFA European Football Championship in 2008 and 2012.

Mann was the lead voice for 3D telecasts of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. A seasoned match commentator, Mann currently works for UK-based Sky Sports, commentating on matches in the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, and World Cup qualifiers.

Palomo is the play-by-play voice for the Mexican National Team matches on ESPN and host of Fuera de Juego, ESPN Deportes and ESPN International’s highest-rated soccer program since 2006. He is also a former anchor of SportsCenter on ESPN Deportes.

Rae, a former British Sports Broadcaster of the Year, is best-known to U.S. viewers as the voice of the UEFA Champions League on ESPN from 2003-09. He has also provided play-by-play commentary for ESPN’s coverage of the UEFA European Football Championship in 2008 and 2012, in addition to the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

ESPN’s broadcast assignments for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil – including the match analyst pairings – will be announced later this spring.

ESPN Inc.’s 2014 FIFA World Cup in the United States

The 2014 FIFA World Cup will be ESPN’s eighth World Cup and most comprehensive presentation to date.  ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC will combine to air all 64 matches live and in high definition (June 12 – July 13). All ESPN and ESPN2 games will be available on WatchESPN, while ABC matches will be available on WATCH ABC. ESPN3, ESPN’s live multi-screen sports network available in more than 85 million homes, will present matches live in multiple languages (other than English and Spanish).

ESPN’s presentation of the 2014 FIFA World Cup will include comprehensive news and information coverage of the month-long soccer showcase with renowned journalists reporting on the tournament and the host country of Brazil. Additional English-language coverage of the quadrennial event will total more than 90 hours of original programming and will include SportsCenter at the World Cup, a nightly World Cup Tonight program, ESPN FC World Cup Encore, a 30-minute pre-match show, halftime and post-match segments, as well as a World Cup-branded ESPN Films 30 for 30: Soccer Stories series, E:60 shows, and access-driven long-form storytelling features.

ESPN garnered more than 40 industry awards, including three Sports Emmys, for its presentation of 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa – more accolades than any single event in the company’s history.

Series Supported by 360-Degree Campaign that Includes Integration of the Chevy Silverado, Cross-Promotional Segments on Popular Telemundo Programs, a Dedicated Digital Hub, Robust Social Engagement Program and More

MIAMI – March 17, 2014 – Telemundo Media and Chevrolet announced today that they have teamed up to create a unique new digital sports reality series, “La Cueva de la Fiera,” available on www.Telemundo.com/lacuevadelafiera.   Supported by a 360° degree promotional campaign and produced in partnership with Chevrolet, the weekly webisodes, which launched in February, offer fans an exclusive look inside Mexican professional soccer’s Club Leon. The dynamic and innovative format builds upon the existing synergy between soccer and Chevrolet, a longtime sponsor of the sport. Celebrity integrations with Club Leon captain Rafael “Rafa” Marquez with the Chevy Silverado will also be featured throughout the 10-episode run of “La Cueva de la Fiera,” including today’s episode, in which Chevrolet and One World Futbol Project join forces with Marquez to surprise young soccer fans with the once-in-a-lifetime experience of participating in a soccer clinic with the star and receiving Chevrolet-branded nearly indestructible One World Futbol soccer balls. As the founding sponsor of One World Futbol Project, over three years Chevrolet is supporting the donation and distribution of 1.5 million balls to organizations working with youth in war-stricken zones, refugee camps, and disaster areas, celebrating the value that soccer can touch lives, provide opportunities and bring positive change to all people of the world.

“We are excited to collaborate with Chevrolet to bring fans a front row seat to the action and excitement of Club Leon soccer,” said Mike Rosen, Executive Vice President of Advertising Sales & Integrated Marketing, Telemundo Media.  “The Chevy Silverado is a fantastic partner for us to find new roads to bring innovative content and unprecedented access to the biggest soccer stars on Telemundo.”

On-air promotion of the series involves cross-promotional segments on popular Telemundo series including “Un Nuevo Dia,” “Titulares y Mas,” “Titulares Telemundo” and “Ritmo Deportivo.” Broadcasts of “Futbol Estelar: Club Leon” will drive viewers to “La Cueva de la Fiera” and its companion content through mentions from the announcers, tagged tune-ins and more.

The multiplatform campaign also includes a dedicated digital hub with player profiles, game highlights and post-game interviews. Plus, “Pregúntale al Leon,” a social engagement program featuring Twitter chats and exclusive digital shorts with players from Club Leon, in addition to a custom hashtag for maximum fan engagement. Further digital content includes livestreams of several highly-anticipated Leon games and a special VOD episode of the complete “La Cueva de la Fiera” series.

“La Cueva de la Fiera” is the first-ever reality series produced by Deportes Telemundo exclusively for digital. Through it, viewers will experience the challenges faced by the Mexican soccer champion, with exclusive access to training camp, the stadium, the secrets of the locker room and moving stories of the most loyal fans. Fans will also experience game day nerves along with the players, Gustavo Matosas and his team of coaches, and share unique moments with Rafa Marquez, the captain and star player of the league and the Mexican national team, whom audiences will get to know beyond the field.
