STAMFORD, Conn. – August 24, 2023 – Team USA sprinters and 100m World Champions Noah Lyles and Sha’Carri Richardson are expected to headline NBC Sports’ comprehensive live coverage of the final weekend of the 2023 World Track & Field Championships from the National Athletics Centre in Budapest, Hungary across NBC, Peacock, CNBC, and USA Network.
Weekend coverage is highlighted by the women’s and men’s 200m final, expected to include 2023 100m world champions Lyles and Richardson, during Friday’s evening session on USA Network and Peacock at 3:40 p.m. ET and 3:50 p.m. ET, respectively. Lyles, who won his first 100m world title last weekend, could become the first man since Usain Bolt in 2015 to successfully pull off the 100m/200m double at an outdoor world championship. If he wins his third consecutive 200m world title on Friday, he would trail only Bolt for most career 200m world titles. He has also been outspoken in his pursuit to break Bolt’s 200m world record of 19.19.
Richardson won her first global medal last Monday, beating out a competitive 100m field that included 10-time world champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (Jamaica) and three-time world champion Shericka Jackson (Jamaica). Richardson is expected to once again face off with reigning 200m world champion Jackson as well as 2023 U.S. 200m champion Gabby Thomas for the world title on Friday.
Saturday’s action, during the evening session on CNBC and Peacock, is highlighted by the men’s and women’s 4x100m finals, at 3:40 p.m. ET and 3:50 p.m. ET, respectively. The men’s team, which took home silver at last year’s World Championships, could possibly include the last three 100m world champions in Lyles (2023), Fred Kerley (2022), and Christian Coleman (2019). The reigning world champion women’s squad will look to repeat. In the women’s 5,000m, Faith Kipyegon (Kenya), who became the first woman to ever win three 1500m world titles with her victory earlier this week, looks to become the first woman to pull off the 1500m/5,000m double at a single world championship (2:50 p.m. ET).
The final day of competition on Sunday, during the evening session on NBC and Peacock, is highlighted by the women’s 800m at 2:45 p.m. ET, where reigning Olympic champion and defending world champion Athing Mu looks to add to her already-impressive global medal count, as well as the men’s and women’s 4x400m relays, where the United States are the defending champions in both sections. The men have won two consecutive 4x400m world titles while the women have won three. The men’s 4x400m is slated to go off at 3:37 p.m. ET and the women’s at 3:47 p.m., closing out action in Budapest.
Other notable events on Sunday include the men’s 5,000m final, expected to feature defending 5,000m world champion and 2023 1500m world silver medalist Jakob Ingebrigtsen (Norway) and two-time Olympic 5,000m medalist Paul Chelimo (3:10 p.m. ET).
Leigh Diffey and Paul Swangard serve as play-by-play announcers alongside four-time Olympic medalist Ato Boldon, four-time Olympic gold medalist Sanya Richards-Ross, 2012 London Olympic decathlon silver medalist Trey Hardee, and two-time Olympic distance runner Kara Goucher. Lewis Johnson serves as reporter.
