DEVIN MCCOURTY JOINS NBC SPORTS’ “FOOTBALL NIGHT IN AMERICA”

May 23, 2023 By admin

Three-Time Super Bowl Champion Joins Most-Watched Studio Show in Sports This Fall on NBC and Peacock

STAMFORD, Conn. – May 23, 2023 – Three-time Super Bowl champion Devin McCourty is joining Football Night in America as an analyst, NBC Sports announced today. Football Night is the most-watched studio show in sports, preceding primetime television’s No. 1 show Sunday Night Football each week during the NFL season on NBC and Peacock.

McCourty spent his entire career as a member of the New England Patriots, playing 13 seasons as a defensive back and helping the team win Super Bowls XLIX, LI and LIII. McCourty earned All-Pro honors three times and was a two-time Pro Bowler. He owns the NFL record for most career playoff games started by a defensive player (24). New England selected McCourty with the 27th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft out of Rutgers University.

McCourty broke into the broadcasting world with “Double Coverage,” a podcast he co-hosted with twin brother Jason McCourty from 2018 to 2020 when they were both members of the Patriots. He also has contributed to NFL Draft and pre-game coverage for CBS Sports and was a guest host on NFL Network’s Good Morning Football earlier this year.

“It’s rare when you have the opportunity to add a three-time Super Bowl-winner to your team, and we’re excited to welcome Devin McCourty to Football Night following an incredible NFL career,” said Sam Flood, Executive Producer and President, Production, NBC Sports. “Devin is a leader in every sense of the word, both on and off the field, and his dynamic personality and passion for the game will be a great addition to the show.”

“I’m excited to be a rookie on the best team in America again,” said McCourty. “I’m very grateful for this opportunity from NBC Sports to learn from great individuals, chase new goals and provide viewers with my thoughts on the biggest games every week.”

Football Night begins at 7 p.m. ET each week during the NFL regular season on NBC and Peacock and provides highlights and analysis of the afternoon games, interviews with high-profile players and coaches, breaking news insights, and an extensive preview of that night’s Sunday Night Football matchup.

Last season, Football Night averaged 7.24 million viewers from 7:30-8:15 p.m. ET, continuing its reign as sports’ most-watched weekly studio show for the 17th consecutive year (since the show’s 2006 debut season).

NOTES & QUOTES FROM WEEK 12 EDITION OF FOOTBALL NIGHT IN AMERICA ON NBC AND PEACOCK

November 27, 2022 By admin

“To me, it takes a village – coaches, other people in the organization – to make sure everyone’s mentality is right to perform at their best.” – Jason Garrett on the importance of players’ mental health

“We talk about how strong these players are, but the ultimate strength is just asking for help when you need it.” – Maria Taylor

“(The Jets) had a rough week, (but) Mike White came in on a white horse and saves the day.” – Garrett

“They’re getting back to their formula…run the ball, pound it, and just waves of people coming at you on defense starting with that front four.” – Tony Dungy on the 49ers

Peacock Sunday Night Football Final Streams EXCLUSIVELY on Peacock Following Every Sunday Night Football Game During 2022 Season

STAMFORD, Conn. – Nov. 27, 2022 – NBC Sports’ presentation of Week 12 of the 2022 NFL season continued tonight from Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Penn., with Football Night in America leading into coverage of the NFC-leading Philadelphia Eagles and Jalen Hurts hosting two-time reigning NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers on Sunday Night Football on NBC, Peacock and Universo.

Maria Taylor hosted FNIA from NBC Sports’ Studio 1 in Stamford, Conn. She was joined by Hall of Fame head coach Tony Dungy, former NFL head coach Jason Garrett, former NFL quarterback Chris Simms, and fantasy sports industry pioneer Matthew Berry. Two-time Super Bowl winner Rodney Harrison joined co-host Jac Collinsworth at the site of the game. NFL Insider Mike Florio provided reports from his home studio.

In advance of tonight’s game, Eagles OL Lane Johnson spoke to NBC Sports’ Michael Smith and discussed the importance of mental health, being a team leader, and more. Click here for a link to the entire interview.

Mike Tirico (play-by-play), Cris Collinsworth (analyst), Melissa Stark (sideline reporter) and Terry McAulay (rules analyst) are calling tonight’s game. Tirico also reported from the field during FNIA.

Following are highlights from tonight’s edition of Football Night in America on NBC and Peacock:

ON PACKERS-EAGLES

Garrett on the importance of tonight’s game for both teams: “It’s the ultimate backs against the wall game for Green Bay. But for Philadelphia, as well as they’ve played, don’t think they don’t know how well the Cowboys are playing. The Cowboys are coming fast and playing as well as anybody, so it’s a must-win for Philly as they go down the stretch.”

ON EAGLES

Harrison on newly-acquired defensive linemen Linval Joseph and Ndamukong Suh: “You better believe these guys did not come back and play football because they need money. They felt like this was the best opportunity for them to win a Super Bowl.”

Harrison on safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson: “He (has) versatility, can play anywhere around the field. He’s a playmaker and has great instincts, but the intensity and passion he plays with, I love it.”

ON PACKERS

Garrett on Packers QB Aaron Rodgers: “I’ve never seen a guy with as good an arm throw the ball as accurately as (Aaron) Rodgers and we have not seen that lately. Receivers running wide open and Aaron Rodgers missing badly. I do think the thumb is a factor because that’s not who Aaron Rodgers is.”

Harrison on the struggles of the Packers’ defense: “It’s defensive coordinator Joe Barry. At the beginning of the season, I thought this was going to be one of the top defenses in the National Football League. You look at their secondary, just miscommunication, blown coverages, a lot of frustration, and too many veteran players back there to make those mistakes…On the defensive line as well, they have to do a better job of fighting off those blocks, being physical, and making those tackles and stopping the run.”

ON MENTAL HEALTH

Eagles OL Lane Johnson to Michael Smith: “Everybody thinks that they have a lot of control over certain situations and you really don’t. You have control over your actions and how you treat people, how you work, and letting go of things that will drag you down.”

Garrett on NFL players’ mental health: “It is a big topic. When you think about it, ever since these guys were (young), they had dreams of playing in the National Football League. They’re highly compensated, but they’re people too. They have the same issues that everybody else has off the field and then they have a pressure to perform on the field, day after day, week after week, with a big spotlight. Years ago, there was a stigma about mental health in our society and in football. Now every team has a clinical psychologist, a sports psychologist, and teams are encouraging players to talk about this. When Lane Johnson and Dak Prescott step up and talk about it, that’s a really good thing.”

Dungy: “As a league, we are doing better. My first 20 years in coaching, no player would come in and have a conversation like Lane Johnson. But my last few years, I was getting that. Guys coming in and saying, ‘I am a little uncomfortable, Coach. I need to see our psychologist.’”

Garrett: “For me, it’s not just the fringe players. It’s the star players. Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, Emmitt Smith…the coaches did an amazing job with these guys who had so much confidence, constantly reinforcing them, ‘You’re the best.’ To me, it takes a village – coaches, other people in the organization – to make sure everyone’s mentality is right to perform at their best.”

Taylor: “We talk about how strong these players are, but the ultimate strength is just asking for help when you need it.”

ON JETS

Simms on Jets QB Mike White’s performance in New York’s win over Chicago: “He was awesome today. He made a lot of big-time throws, spread the ball around to all the weapons, whether it was Elijah Moore or Garrett Wilson. The offense was really good in sloppy conditions in New York.”

Garrett: “(The Jets) had a rough week, (but) Mike White came in on a white horse and saves the day.”

Garrett on head coach Robert Saleh’s decision to start Mike White and bench Zach Wilson: “Sometimes as the head coach, you have to play checkers and not chess. You have to do what’s best for your team right now…Mike takes advantage of the opportunity, the team responds to him, continue with this and then make your best decision as you go down the stretch. They needed to win, stay in the hunt, and this was the right decision.”

Dungy: “This is the quarterback position and the guy you drafted with the second pick. Now, if you’re telling me we’re playing checkers and trying to win this game, and the best chance for us to win is to put that second pick in the draft on ice…that’s sending a message to me as a player in that locker room.”

ON 49ERS

Simms: “(49ers defensive coordinator) DeMeco Ryans and that 49ers’ defense, wow, they are kicking some butt right now. Four straight games with no points (allowed) in the second half? This is the NFL, this isn’t high school football…Fred Warner, arguably the best linebacker in football. We know the pass rush is always in the face of the quarterback…Nick Bosa, maybe the best pass rusher in football. They’re a team that’s well-coached, creative, and they’ve got studs all over the field.”

Dungy: “They’re getting back to their formula. If you remember their Super Bowl year, run the ball, pound it, and just waves of people coming at you on defense starting with that front four. They can alternate guys in, aggressive secondary. I like what I’m seeing from the 49ers right now.”

ON BENGALS

Harrison on the Bengals’ win over the Titans: “Huge win on the road in a hostile environment without your star players Ja’Marr Chase and Joe Mixon…I really felt like Joe Burrow was the difference…(he) is doing a better job of utilizing his legs and making plays.”

Simms: “D.J. Reader is one of the best run-stopping defensive tackles in football…The Bengals are good on all three levels — linebackers, safeties, they got everything on defense. That’s why they were in the Super Bowl last year.”

Dungy: “We were concerned about their offensive line and protecting (Joe) Burrow. He’s getting protection and defensively, they did the job today up front on the defensive line.”

ON CHIEFS

Garrett on TE Travis Kelce: “He makes it look awfully easy. It’s like he is in high school and everyone else is in grade school.”

ON RAVENS

Garrett: “They have four losses, two-score leads in all of those games that they blew. They did it again today to Jacksonville. They have to get that right down the stretch or they’re not going to be playing in the playoffs.”

ON BRONCOS

Garrett on Broncos QB Russell Wilson’s performance in Denver’s loss to Carolina: “Russell (Wilson) struggled the whole game long. A lot of three-and-outs, a lot of confusion, and a lot of frustration in Denver.”

Florio on head coach Nathaniel Hackett: “Plenty of fans would love to make a coaching change right now, but (with) these owners there is no track record, no history, no guidance for what they are going to do. But know this, they are very smart, methodical, and they are not panicking. They understand what is going on this season. Lot of close games, players injured, and they are still playing hard. It would be extremely unlikely for a change to be made before the end of the season.”

ON BUCCANEERS

Garrett: “I was surprised — coming back from the Germany game, I thought Tampa was on their way…Cleveland did a good job of controlling the game by running that rock.”

Dungy: “We thought they were getting healthy on defense. Played over in Germany and looked good, but Nick Chubb found (open) seams consistently.”

ON JAGUARS

Simms on QB Trevor Lawrence: “We’ve been wanting that big-time, take over the game type of moment from the number one pick…Guess what, Jacksonville? You got it today. Made a lot of wow, big-time plays to win the game.”

Dungy: “I love what Doug Pederson has brought. This ‘never say die’ attitude. They fight, hustle, until the whistle blows.”

ON COMMANDERS

Garrett: “Taylor Heinicke continues to win…the NFC East is tough, and they are staying in the fight.”

NOTES & QUOTES FROM WEEK 3 EDITION OF FOOTBALL NIGHT IN AMERICA ON NBC

September 27, 2020 By admin

“He is insane in the membrane right now.” – Chris Simms on Russell Wilson

“When the Patriots are (successfully) running the football, you cannot beat them.” – Rodney Harrison

“That tells me that Matt Nagy doesn’t really believe he has a franchise quarterback in Mitchell Trubisky.” – Tony Dungy on Nick Foles replacing Trubisky today

STAMFORD, Conn. – Sept. 27, 2020 – NBC Sports’ presentation of Week 3 of the 2020 NFL season began tonight from Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, La., with Football Night in America leading into coverage of Packers-Saints on Sunday Night Football on NBC.

Liam McHugh hosted FNIA from NBC Sports Group’s Studio 1 in Stamford, Conn., and was joined by Pro Football Hall of Fame head coach Tony Dungy and former NFL quarterback Chris Simms. Due to COVID-19 precautions, two-time Super Bowl-winner Rodney Harrison and NFL Insider Mike Florio joined Football Night remotely from studios in their respective homes. Jac Collinsworth co-hosted the show on-site from Mercedes-Benz Superdome and was joined by Sunday Night Football analyst and his father Cris Collinsworth.

In addition, FNIA featured the new film Black Boys, which is executive produced by Saints S Malcolm Jenkins. Dungy said of Jenkins, “What I love about him is action. They’re registering voters in New Orleans, feeding the homeless, job programs for young people. I just really commend him for doing things in the community.”

Jac Collinsworth also interviewed Packers RB Aaron Jones, who wore a sombrero.

Mike Tirico (play-by-play), Collinsworth (analyst), Michele Tafoya (sideline reporter) and Terry McAulay (rules analyst) are calling tonight’s Patriots-Seahawks game. Al Michaels has the night off.

***

Following are highlights from tonight’s edition of Football Night in America on NBC:

ON PACKERS

Simms on QB Aaron Rodgers: “We are not seeing him coach receivers and saying go this way or looking over at the sideline like, what kind of play is that? He is very comfortable there and they are more aggressive. That is the biggest thing I look at. 18-for-30 last week, I love it. It means they are taking shots down the field…he is comfortable, the communication is right and that is allowing him to throw to the first read in the offense a lot. And I think (Matt) LaFleur has added some nice new wrinkles to the offense in general.”

Dungy: “Always a lot to love when you score 40 points a game.”

ON SAINTS

Cris Collinsworth: “You watch Alvin Kamara play the game, he is just one of the most electric players in football, not only as a runner, but as a receiver.”

Harrison on Taysom Hill: “He’s the best athlete on the field…He is a threat…Right now there’s a sense of urgency, you have to play your best players.”

ON SEAHAWKS

Simms on QB Russell Wilson: “He is insane in the membrane right now…Buying time, throwing perfect throws all over the place. Very impressive.”

Dungy: “I have not seen a quarterback play better than this…I am worried about that Seattle defense. Russell Wilson is playing out of his mind and they are winning on the last play of the game every week.”

Simms on Wilson: “He’s amazing, so maybe he can continue to do this, but I would like to see a little run game and defense to help him out.”

ON BEARS

Harrison on QB Nick Foles replacing Mitchell Trubisky and leading the team to a win: “It is Nick Foles. He came in and absolutely broke the Falcons heart. The former Super Bowl MVP came in and played well. He had three touchdowns, and if you are Matt Nagy don’t overthink it, keep it. Keep it Nick Foles.”

Florio: “I spoke to Matt Nagy after the game, he said he made a gut-feel type of decision to go with Nick Foles. And the coaching staff when they get back to Chicago are going to get together and make a decision going forward. Nagy said he doesn’t want to go back and forth on this. He wants to make a decision and stick with it.”

Dungy: “Let me tell you about those gut feelings, I had some gut feelings in Tampa, and I changed quarterbacks a few times. I never had a gut feeling in Indianapolis with Peyton Manning. That tells me that Matt Nagy doesn’t really believe he has a franchise quarterback in Mitchell Trubisky.”

Simms: “How can they not go back to Nick Foles the way he looked? … He has great presence in the pocket. He throws under pressure. He has got to start like Rodney said.”

Harrison: “It has nothing to do with gut feeling, it is the smart thing to do. Nick Foles should be the starting quarterback. He has experience. The guys in that locker room respect the fact that he is a Super Bowl MVP. Mitch Trubisky had three years and three games to prove himself. He is entirely too inconsistent, and I think the most important fact is his teammates lost confidence in him. When Nick Foles came in you saw, and coach talked about, how they rallied around him and they brought a lot of energy and it actually affected the defense as well.”

McHugh: “It’s not a gut feeling, it’s a brain feeling.”

ON BILLS

Simms on QB Josh Allen: “They’re never out of it because of this guy right now.”

ON PATRIOTS

Harrison: “I thought the Patriots did a great job of rebounding from last week, protecting the deep part of the field. When the Patriots are (successfully) running the football, you cannot beat them. As far as Cam (Newton) is concerned, he is talking about the preparation and the confidence that you go into a game with when you know that Coach Belichick has prepared you for that week.”

ON TITANS

Simms: “Ryan Tannehill has injected himself into the conversation for one of the best deep-ball throwers in the game.”

ON WASHINGTON

Simms on QB Dwayne Haskins: “He didn’t have the best day. Made a few plays but made some second year-type mistakes at the quarterback position. He’ll have better days.”

ON BROWNS

Simms on RB Nick Chubb: “They are at their best when Nick Chubb and this offensive run game get going. Nick Chubb is one of the best backs in the game right now. When they feed him the ball, they are a dangerous offense.”

ON CHARGERS

Dungy on playing QB Justin Herbert over Tyrod Taylor: “I say put him in there. He’s got so much talent. He’s going to play better as the season goes on.”

ON BENGALS

Simms on QB Joe Burrow: “They’ve got to do something a little more to protect this guy. It’s a lot of big hits through three games.”

Simms on the Bengals-Eagles tie: “Nobody wanted to win this game. They refused it. I think they were very happy with a tie.”

ON EAGLES

Harrison: “I feel bad for Carson Wentz because I think he is really playing behind a garbage offensive line. He looks scared to death when he is behind the line and it is forcing him to hold on to the ball, trying to force it in between two people. But I also look at some of the veteran players that they have. DeSean Jackson came in, he is old, you can’t depend on him, he stays hurt. I look at a guy like Zach Ertz, he looks like he is still upset about the contract situation. He seems like he is playing like he is pouting or something like that. These guys need to get on the field and become a lot more productive.”

ON JETS

McHugh: “As for the Jets, their fans might be looking ahead to the 2021 Draft.”

Simms: “Worst team in football.”

ABOUT THE SUNDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL BUS

Since week 1, the bus has traveled across the country to each SNF host city. To give more fans a chance to join in on the experience, the SNF Bus also visits markets along the route without a SNF game on the schedule. The bus arrives in each host city two to three days prior to the game, making stops at local landmarks and events before heading to the game site. Once at the stadium, the Sunday Night Football bus gives fans the opportunity to interact with America’s most-watched primetime television show with exclusive activities and experiences.

The 2018 bus features football field decaling on the floor and a replica of the Football Night in America studio where fans can grab a mic and act as “special correspondents” for photos. From the Carrie Underwood music experience and the @OnHerTurf display, to the life-size NFL player wall, fans have numerous opportunities to interact and share memories from the bus.
