PETER KING SPEAKS WITH DAK PRESCOTT AND BRANDON STALEY AS TRAINING CAMP TOUR CONCLUDES IN THIS WEEK’S “FMIA” COLUMN

August 29, 2022 By admin

“I didn’t do a good enough job. That’s what’s gotten me moving this whole offseason.” – Chargers head coach Brandon Staley to King on Los Angeles’ Week 18 loss last season that kept them out of the postseason

“The problem is the timing…[GM Brandon] Beane and Bills ownership should draw up some new guidelines for investigating lurid accusations against future and current players.” – Peter King on the Bills cutting punter Matt Araiza

“I cannot find any good reason to pick someone other than Josh Allen for MVP.” – King

“Jonathan Taylor should be the first overall pick in every [fantasy football] draft.” – King

STAMFORD, Conn. – August 29, 2022 – Peter King speaks with Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott and Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley as his Training Camp Tour concludes in this week’s edition of Football Morning in America, available now exclusively on NBCSports.com. King also discusses the Bills cutting punter Matt Araiza, the Patriots’ preseason struggles, and his fantasy football tips for the upcoming season.

The following are highlights from this week’s edition of Football Morning in America:

LOS ANGELES CHARGERS

Chargers head coach Brandon Staley to Peter King on Los Angeles’ Week 18 last season: “That’s the toughest loss that I’ve ever been a part of as a competitor for sure.”

Staley to King: “My regret is that in what should’ve been able to get us out of there with a tie, [the Raiders] ended up splitting us on a 10-yard run and that’s what I’ve been thinking about – our execution on that last play. That’s the tough side of things, having to live with that. I didn’t do a good enough job. That’s what’s gotten me moving this whole offseason.”

Staley to King on linebacker Khalil Mack: “I think to establish a culture and the type of mindset, you gotta bring in players who can live that. I think there’s no better example of that than Khalil [Mack]. I saw it happen in Chicago. He’s a fierce competitor.”

Staley to King on the Chargers’ aggressive play calling: “I know the mindset I tried to create within our team. I know that’s not gonna change. Not one bit.”

DAK PRESCOTT

Cowboys QB Dak Prescott to King on his football journey: “I feel I’ve been doubted at every level, honestly. I got the starting quarterback job in high school, college and pro due to the guy in front of me getting injured. So when I stepped in [in Dallas, for Tony Romo], I said, ‘Maybe this is it, again.’ I didn’t want to put it in anyone else’s hands to take it away from me. And as the success happened, it was just a confirmation.”

Prescott to King on the vulnerability he shows: “It’s not just smoke with me. It’s real-life events. [The deaths of] my mom, my brother, my severe [ankle] injury. I’ve been through it. Months, years later, I’m able to talk about it and be vulnerable about it. People understand that’s who I am.”

NEWS & NOTES

King on the Bills cutting punter Matt Araiza amid accusations of gang rape: “The Bills, of course, had no choice but to cut punter Matt Araiza. The problem is the timing…[GM Brandon] Beane and Bills ownership should draw up some new guidelines for investigating lurid accusations against future and current players.”

King on Commanders RB Brian Robinson Jr. getting shot: “Being an NFL player doesn’t disqualify you from the everyday gun violence that plagues our society. You’ve got to feel for a guy who’d done everything right in training camp and worked his way into a big role in coordinator Scott Turner’s offense.”

King on the Patriots’ offseason struggles: “The Patriots looked bad, particularly on offense, throughout the summer, and Mac Jones wasn’t as sharp in practice this summer as he was in games as a rookie…[they] enter the season the clear number three in the AFC East behind Buffalo and Miami.”

A prominent NFL executive to King on the Deshaun Watson suspension: “I think there were multiple owners who didn’t want Deshaun Watson suspended for the season, and told Roger Goodell that.”

King on the fight at the Rams-Bengals joint practice: “I think the NFL is going to have to get in the business of monitoring behavior at joint practices and negotiate a change to the player discipline policy with the union. That’s my takeaway when the league said that discipline for the Aaron Donald helmet-swinging incident would be left to the Rams.

King on Jimmy Garoppolo’s current situation: “I think if I’m Jimmy Garoppolo, and I get my freedom sometime in the next two weeks, I don’t sign anywhere. I wait. I get fully healthy and sign with a team when there’s a quarterback injury.”

King on Bills QB Josh Allen: “I cannot find any good reason to pick someone other than Josh Allen for MVP.”

King on the Steelers’ QB battle: “The preseason is not something to care about, but in this case, at the very least, the Pittsburgh quarterbacks played as if to say, The death of the Pittsburgh quarterback position has been greatly exaggerated.”

Cris Collinsworth to King on the late Len Dawson: “Len didn’t run through life. He glided through life…He had zero ego. From what I’ve heard, he was that kind of quarterback too.”

FANTASY FOOTBALL

King on Colts RB Jonathan Taylor: “Jonathan Taylor should be the first overall pick in every draft. He’s Roger Craig — potentially better…and he’s 23 with a coach who loves him.”

King on his Reborn Player of the Year, Chiefs WR JuJu Smith-Schuster: “He’s been revitalized because he thought he was typecast as a slot guy only with the Steelers. He loves Patrick Mahomes, and the feeling is mutual.”

King on Bills WR Gabriel Davis: “He’s a worker, and Josh Allen sees him as a great complement — not a distant number two — to Stefon Diggs.”

King on the Buccaneers’ wide receivers: “The Bucs are unpredictable because of injuries and tender players, and I’d steer clear of receivers not named Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.”

King on Raiders QB Derek Carr: “Derek Carr will be a top-five fantasy QB. Threw for 4,804 yards last year, and now he’s got Josh McDaniels calling plays and Davante Adams running routes. What’s not to like?”

King on Saints WR Chris Olave: “Gut Feeling of the Year: Chris Olave of the Saints will be the most productive rookie WR.”

King on Cowboys RB Tony Pollard: “I’m a broken record on this: Tony Pollard is the best running back on the Cowboys roster.”

NOTES AND QUOTES – RORY MCILROY WINS FEDEXCUP AT TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP ON NBC AND PEACOCK

August 28, 2022 By admin

“He beat the best player in the world heads-up in the last group from six shots behind. Rory has had a monster year.” – Paul Azinger

“This is debatably the best golf that Rory has ever played.” – Brandel Chamblee on Golf Central

“McIlroy has been the face of the TOUR with this tumultuous season. For Rory McIlroy to be in this position is an incredible feat.” – Dan Hicks

STAMFORD, Conn. – August 28, 2022 – NBC Sports presented exclusive final round coverage of the 2022 TOUR Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga., on NBC, GOLF Channel and Peacock. Rory McIlroy shot a final round 66 to overcome a six-shot deficit to secure his third career FedExCup title, defeating Scottie Scheffler and Sungjae Im by one shot.

Golf Central provided post-round coverage on GOLF Channel and Peacock.

TOUR Championship Leaderboard – Final Results

Player Total
Rory McIlroy -21
Scottie Scheffler -20
Sungjae Im -20
Xander Schauffele -18
Justin Thomas -17
Max Homa -17

Following are quotes from final round coverage on NBC and Peacock, as well as post-round coverage on GOLF Central.

ON RORY MCILROY

Dan Hicks: “McIlroy has been the face of the TOUR with this tumultuous season off the course that has been well-documented. For Rory McIlroy to be in this position is an incredible feat.”

Paul Azinger: “He beat the best player in the world heads-up in the last group from six shots behind. Rory has had a monster year.”

Azinger: “He and Tiger put the TOUR on their shoulders, on their backs. For him to play the way he has after he did that, in some ways it actually elevated his game after took on that bigger role.”

Brandel Chamblee on GOLF Central: “This is debatably the best golf that Rory has ever played.”

Mark Rolfing on GOLF Central: “Earlier this summer in one of the most tumultuous times we’ve ever seen in professional golf, he literally put his arms around the PGA TOUR, lifted them up, put them his shoulders, and then he went out and won the Canadian Open with a final round 62. Everything that he said about the PGA TOUR was never going to mean as much unless he backed it up with the way he played, and I don’t think it’s a coincidence the way he’s played, and the fact that he finished the season the way he did today…he was situationally motivated, that his words would be so much more powerful if he performed the way he did.”

Hicks after McIlroy’s chip on 16th hole hits the pin: “A lot of people just jumped out of their chair.”

Azinger: “Including you!”

Azinger following McIlroy’s long birdie make on the 15th hole to tie Scheffler: “This is the height of competition right here…our first real fist-pump moment.”

Azinger: “Rory is free-flowing.”

Azinger following approach to 10 feet on 10th hole: “He just keeps turning the screws on Scottie Scheffler.”

Hicks following birdie on the 7th hole: “Did you ever think in your wildest imagination that after he bogeyed the first hole that at the 7th hole he’d be tied?”

Azinger to Hicks: “Inconceivable.”

ON SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER

Gary Koch on missed birdie putt on 17th hole: “His putter has betrayed him.”

Azinger: “He’s just not seeing it.”

Justin Leonard on Scheffler’s missed par putt on 16: “That looked like a little bit of a pull to me.”

Azinger after Scheffler’s double-cross on the 13th hole: “Sometimes you hit enough of these cut shots that they can become the problem. They can get over-cooked, maybe a little too open…his normal shot falls to the right or falls to the left, but he’s trying to play a decided slice, a curveball here.”

Azinger: “Everybody talks about how fun it is to win. It’s not. It’s the hardest thing in the world to do. It’s only after the fact that it’s fun.”

Azinger after Scheffler’s third shot ended up in the bunker on the 6th hole: “This is a disaster. It’s hard to watch this happen to a guy of this pedigree, this caliber. This was always going to be a hard day for him, a hard weekend, and he’s really feeling the heat now.”

ON SUNGJAE IM

Azinger: “He has been on autopilot today.”

Hicks: “It is not a surprise to see Sungjae Im in the position he’s in. Top-15 finishes in his last four starts, not a single round over par for him in his last five TOUR starts.”

PROGRAMMING ALERT – THIRD ROUND OF TOUR CHAMPIONSHIP RESUMES SUNDAY AT 9:45 A.M. ET ON GOLF CHANNEL AND PEACOCK

August 27, 2022 By admin

Final Round Coverage – 12 p.m. ET on GOLF Channel/Peacock, Shifts to NBC/Peacock at 1:30 p.m. ET

Notes and Quotes from Third Round – “He’s doesn’t have his best stuff. You can just tell by the way he’s carrying himself. He’s just trying to hang on. He’s just not dialed in.” – Paul Azinger on Scottie Scheffler

STAMFORD, Conn. – August 27, 2022 – NBC Sports presented exclusive third round coverage of the 2022 TOUR Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga., on NBC, GOLF Channel and Peacock.

Play was suspended due to inclement weather. Live third round coverage will resume Sunday at 9:45 a.m. ET on GOLF Channel. Final round coverage will begin at noon ET on GOLF Channel and shifts to NBC at 1:30 p.m. ET. All coverage will stream on Peacock.

TOUR Championship Leaderboard – Third Round (In Progress)

Player Total Thru
Scottie Scheffler -19 12
Xander Schauffele -18 12
Sungjae Im -16 14
Rory McIlroy -15 16
Justin Thomas -14 17
Sepp Straka -14 17

Following are quotes from third round coverage on NBC and Peacock.

ON SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER

Paul Azinger: “He’s doesn’t have his best stuff. You can just tell by the way he’s carrying himself. He’s just trying to hang on. He’s just not dialed in. A couple of dicey wedges for a guy who ordinarily, that’s his strength. He’s just hanging in there today, trying to figure something out.”

Azinger after missed birdie putt on 9th hole: “He just kind of seems a little lethargic. There’s so much stress on what he’s trying to achieve here, he doesn’t want to get ahead of himself and he’s so wrapped up in trying to be in the moment.”

Azinger on Scheffler’s birdie at the 8th hole after hitting the green from the fairway bunker: “(The fairway bunker shot) was such a hard shot, not many guys can pull that shot off, and then to follow it up with the putt…it was so important for Scheffler to make a birdie today before a bogey.”

ON XANDER SCHAUFFELE

Roger Maltbie after Schauffele found the green from the trees on the 7th hole: “Openings in the trees to this fella are like catnip.”

Maltbie as Schauffele asked patrons to move with his lie in the right rough on the 5th hole: “When this used to happen to me when I was playing, I would tell the fans, ‘You know, if I was that good, I would be in the middle of the fairway folks. You might want to give me a little room.’”

ON SUNGJAE IM

Azinger on Im on 13th hole after missing consecutive birdie putts short while in third place: “I’ll tell you what happens – it sticks into your head exactly where you stand, and you have every reason to be tentative on a downhiller. You don’t want to do anything silly at this point. It’s just pressure.”

MIKE TIRICO ON LATEST PGA TOUR DEVELOPMENTS

Tirico: “Competition usually brings change and we’ve seen that here. We’ve also seen a reaction from the biggest names in the game – generational talents like Woods and McIlroy – stepping up not on the golf course, but amongst their peers, to try and make the changes to improve the PGA TOUR. If all of this happens, we will have bigger events for all of us to enjoy. But there’s also the reality – and with three more cases in the last 24 hours – of legal action continuing to expand, that this is going to be tied up in the courts for a while. So while there may be better action on the golf course, a resolution to this situation in the sport is weeks, months or maybe years away.”
