Green, Clemson DE Da’Quan Bowers and Auburn DT Nick Fairley look to take the next step in their careers.

NFL Network’s draft analyst Mike Mayock headlines NFL Network and NFL.com’s combined 23-person roster, joining host Rich Eisen and analyst Charles Davis for daily reports on the prospects participating live Saturday, February 26 through Tuesday, March 1 beginning at 9:00 AM ET each day. New to NFL Network’s Combine coverage this year is the UA E39, an Under Armour compression shirt fitted with electronic sensors that track the body’s natural motion and biometric signals, which are then sent to a tiny device on the front of the shirt. This device tracks and keeps all of the athlete’s critical data, including breathing rate, heart rate, horse power and G force generated. The UA E39 will give NFL general managers, coaches and scouts an unprecedented look at the athletes during their evaluations.

Additionally, Mayock’s updated top five draft prospects by position are now available on NFL.com. To see Mayock’s updated list, please visit: http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d81dd8ff0/article/underclassmen-prevalent-among-top-five-per-position?module=Combine_CP

Latest Edition of ‘The Rich Eisen Podcast’ Now Available For Download on NFL.com and iTunes – Featuring NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock, Atlanta Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff, and former Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints Head Coach Jim Mora, Sr.

The latest edition of ‘The Rich Eisen Podcast’ is now available for download on NFL.com and iTunes. As the 2011 NFL Scouting Combine gets ready to kick off from Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on Thursday, February 24, NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock offers his view on the top prospects, such as Auburn defensive tackle Nick Fairley, North Carolina defensive end Robert Quinn and the quarterbacks Cam Newton, Jake Locker, Ryan Mallett and Blaine Gabbert. Mayock also offers his view on the business of evaluating players and recounts a defining moment in his career. Next up is Atlanta Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff, who is heading into his fourth NFL Scouting Combine in his current role. Dimitroff details his ideology when it comes to free agency, the NFL Draft and the Scouting Combine, including the interviews each team has with the prospects. Finally, with the Academy Awards coming up on Sunday, Eisen gets the Oscar picks from former Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints head coach Jim Mora, Sr. Prior to coaching football, Mora grew up around movie studios so he has always been a big movie buff. With that background, Mora picks the winners from all of the major Oscar categories.

Below are select quotes from this week’s edition:

– “My entire thing when I got into the evaluation of player personnel was by definition you’re going to be wrong a percentage of the time. What you owe to people that play the game for a living and coach it for a living and evaluate for a living and the fans out there, is just as much hard work as you can give and as much integrity as you can give.” – Mike Mayock on the evaluation of player personnel

– “I’m probably going to walk in there on the first day of the defensive line drills and say he’s the No. 1 pick in the whole country. And he didn’t play last year.” – Mike Mayock on North Carolina defensive end Robert Quinn

– “Some people argue they’re just in their shorts and t-shirts, how do you really gauge football players? My feeling is if you’ve done your work as far as evaluated off of video like you should do, then this just supplements your opinion and I think it’s invaluable.” – Thomas Dimitroff on the importance of the NFL Scouting Combine

Kelly Tilghman will host Golf Channel coverage with Terry Gannon and Nick Faldo anchoring from the main tower. Maltbie, Koch, Rolfing and Pepper will have dual roles joining Phil Parkin and Rich Lerner as Golf Channel reporters.

Golf Channel also will have an imbedded social media reporter at the tournament, who will work behind the scenes to provide an exclusive look into the production of the broadcasts. Fans can access this content from the Golf Chanel Facebook and Twitter pages. NBCSports.com’s ProGolfTalk will feature previews, recaps and analysis of all the pairings and results throughout the event.

Golf Channel and NBC will share 10 tournaments on the PGA TOUR’s 2011 FedExCup schedule, including the PLAYERS Championship and PGA TOUR Playoffs.

“GOLF CHANNEL ON NBC”: All golf coverage on NBC will be re-branded as “Golf Channel on NBC.” The coverage will incorporate the Golf Channel look throughout every telecast, down to the logo on the NBC Sports commentators’ apparel. Golf Channel’s tournament graphics will be showcased throughout all coverage, which now includes a custom-made Golf Channel-NBC peacock combination logo.

Dick Ebersol, chairman, NBC Sports Group: “There are very few channels whose name delivers exactly what the brand promises. Beginning with Arnold Palmer and Joe Gibbs 16 years ago, Golf Channel has built a strong brand by covering the sport with passion and authenticity, which made re-branding all NBC Sports golf coverage as ‘Golf Channel on NBC’ an easy decision. Our plan is to grow Golf Channel by exposing it to new viewers through the broad reach of the network and the unprecedented cross-promotional power of NBCUniversal.”

In addition to branding, Golf Channel’s coverage of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship also will benefit from generous promotional support from NBCUniversal’s family of TV networks and websites. WGC-Accenture has been identified as a cross-channel priority by the NBCUniversal Marketing Council.

Mike McCarley, president, Golf Channel: “The opportunity to have the vast resources of the NBCUniversal family behind an initiative like this will be extremely effective in helping to expose the Golf Channel to millions more viewers. At our best, we provide viewers the best seat in the house for the most in-depth and compelling golf coverage on television.”

STATE OF THE GAME LIVE: Johnny Miller and Nick Faldo, two of the premiere voices in golf, will participate in a first-of-its-kind television event titled “State of the Game Live” this Friday night at 8:30 p.m. ET on Golf Channel. Miller and Faldo, along with golf analysts Roger Maltbie and Brandel Chamblee, will participate in a panel discussion moderated by Dan Hicks on issues surrounding the game today. Golf Channel’s Frank Nobilo will also participate in the program.

Ebersol: “This is a unique golf-television event that for the first time brings together the two premiere voices in the game…Johnny Miller, who I have had a special relationship with for many years, and Nick Faldo. Beyond all of their credentials on the course, their voices always resonate with fans on the significant issues that affect the game. Our goal is to utilize our combined assets for more events such as this in the future.”

CONFERENCE CALL: Earlier today, Miller, Hicks, Maltbie, Chamblee and Faldo participated in a media conference call. For a replay of the call, dial 719-457-0820. Passcode: 8615027. Following are highlights:

Faldo on the competition: “Great week. Sixty-four guys going down to 32 (on) Day 1. One of the most exciting days on television because nobody likes to go home. These guys will fight hard…we will have some great matches.”

Miller on Tiger Woods’ ability to win majors again: “I think he just needs a win. The bottom line is it could be the Hershey Bar Open. It wouldn’t matter. He just needs a win…I still think that he can make those guys eat their words…these young guys that are basically writing him off. But he’s got to get some confidence quick…to expect to win at Augusta without winning. I’m not saying he can’t do it because he’s like Jack Nicklaus, who at 46 won a Masters out of nowhere. But he needs a win.”

Faldo on Tiger Woods’ ability to win majors again: “I don’t think you can say it’s never going to happen. But it’s definitely more difficult now.”

Miller on match play: “Match play is of course a whole different animal and every hole is a little event…There are some great matches. Looks like that Snead bracket that Tiger’s in is really a strong bracket.”

Chamblee on Tiger Woods and the competition this week: “This week sets up nicely. Of course for the first time in ages, Tiger Woods is probably not the favorite for a lot of different reasons. Just to Johnny’s point about the Sam Snead bracket that he’s in…very, very tough for him to advance through that bracket…in that group you’ve got some of the longest hitters and some of the most exciting golfers in the game right now like Dustin Johnson, Bubba Watson…Paul Casey…Ernie Els is in that group…Tim Clark. A lot of eyes will be on that Sam Snead bracket. But it looks like the Bobby Jones bracket will see quite a bit more upsets. That’s true generally when you look at match play. A lot of people want to make an analogy to basketball and its just not.”

Faldo on the field this week: “It’s a global game and the fact that they’re all here this week is great…64 of the best players in the world. And you’ve got such a variety of stories.”

Maltbie on match play: “Match play is really compelling. It’s personal. It’s one-on-one. It’s not man against the course, it’s you against the course and, very importantly, your opponent.”

Hicks on match play: “The match play is always a special feel, special look because its one and done. It’s really entertaining for the fans.”

Chamblee on match play: “Definitely looking forward to the week for a lot of different reasons, not the least of which is that 64 of the best players in the world have all come together…it’s compelling because in match play you see the guys play a little bit more cavalier style of golf. You end up getting some great story lines.”

Hicks on Golf Channel and NBC coming together under Comcast ownership: “You’re doing the viewer at home a service by having this kind of firepower and having this kind of thinking and dynamic. The viewer at home is really the beneficiary of this merger.”

Chamblee on Golf Channel and NBC coming together under Comcast ownership: “The way it will be branded, at least from what I understand, is ‘Golf Channel on NBC’ will drive viewers to Golf Channel and (viewers) will get more in-depth details on players they may not know a whole lot about, which is good for golf.”

Faldo on cutting the wires to Miller’s microphone (joking): “I’m upgrading my scissors and now going to gardening sheers to cut Johnny off.”

NEW YORK – February 22, 2011 – The NBC Sports Group will broadcast all three legs of horse racing’s prestigious Triple Crown, renewing the rights to the Preakness Stakes and reacquiring rights to the Belmont Stakes. As previously announced, NBC and Churchill Downs, Inc. renewed rights to the Kentucky Derby. This marks the first time that all three races will be on one network since NBC aired them in 2005. The agreements were announced today by Dick Ebersol, Chairman, NBC Sports Group, Tom Chuckas, President and Chief Operating Officer, Maryland Jockey Club, and C. Steven Duncker, NYRA Chairman. Like NBC Sports’ agreement with Churchill Downs, each agreement announced today gives NBC exclusive rights to the Preakness and Belmont through 2015.

The agreements include coverage of the Black Eyed Susan Stakes and other Preakness-day and Belmont-day programming on VERSUS. Additionally, expanded Derby week programming including the Kentucky Oaks and Derby day programming will air on VERSUS. In all, the NBC Sports Group will broadcast more than 25 hours of Triple Crown coverage (detailed schedule to be released at a later date). Financial terms of the deals were not disclosed.

“Everyone at NBC Sports Group is delighted that the Triple Crown has been reassembled. We are now uniquely positioned to significantly expand the reach of these iconic events with extensive coverage on VERSUS,” said Ebersol. “As we previously announced, we are continuing our long-standing partnership with the Kentucky Derby. To add this extension with the Preakness while reacquiring the Belmont gives our new NBC Sports Group the three most important events in thoroughbred racing. And we want to thank Churchill Downs Incorporated and CEO Bob Evans for his leadership in paving the way for the Triple Crown to return to NBC.”

“We are pleased to renew our broadcast partnership with NBC Sports,” said Chuckas. “Our relationship with NBC allows us the opportunity to reach more than just sports fans. The partnership not only affords us the stature and exposure of a continued presence on network television but provides the added benefit of NBC’s consistent promotion through the Kentucky Derby leading into the Preakness.”

“We are thrilled to return our premier race to NBC Sports,” said Duncker. “They have done a terrific job covering horse racing, including their Kentucky Derby and the Preakness broadcasts over the prior decade. With an excellent production team that has pioneered innovative camera angles, and a tremendous group of on-air talent that offers unique insights into the races, NBC Sports will be a great partner for the Belmont Stakes.”

NBC SPORTS AND HORSE RACING: The NBC Sports Group is now the exclusive home to Horse Racing’s Triple Crown. This marks the first time that all three races will be on one network since NBC last aired the Triple Crown in 2005. NBC has been the exclusive home of the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes since 2001.

KENTUCKY DERBY: In the 10 years that Churchill Downs and NBC Sports have been together the event has experienced remarkable growth. The Kentucky Derby is now seen by 7.4 million more viewers than the last Kentucky Derby broadcast by ABC in 2000 (16.5 million vs. 9.1 million, up 51 percent).

The shared vision of Churchill Downs and NBC Sports’ successful ‘Big Event Strategy’ to assemble the broadest possible audience led to the 2010 Kentucky Derby being the most-watched Kentucky Derby in 21 years, in addition to the year prior which was the most-watched Derby in 20 years. Last year’s Kentucky Derby averaged 16.5 million viewers, the most watched Kentucky Derby since 1989 when Sunday Silence won the Derby (18.5 million).

PREAKNESS STAKES: Since NBC Sports began broadcasting the Preakness in 2001, every Preakness telecast on NBC over that period attracted more viewers than any Preakness telecast on ABC in the previous seven years. Viewership for the Preakness is up an average of 69% in the 10 years on NBC compared to the previous seven years on ABC.

BELMONT STAKES: NBC Sports broadcast the Belmont from 2001-05, including three straight years in which the Belmont had a Triple Crown at stake. The 2004 Belmont featuring Smarty Jones racing for the Triple Crown was seen by 21.9 million viewers, the most for a Belmont broadcast since Seattle Slew captured the elusive Triple Crown in 1977.

Since its involvement in the Triple Crown, NBC Sports has been honored with 11 Eclipse Awards for its thoroughbred racing coverage, Preakness (2002-03-05-06-08), Kentucky Derby (2007), Belmont (2004) and Breeder’s Cup (2001). Additionally, NBC Sports has won three Eclipse Awards in the features category: 2002 on War Emblem (Preakness broadcast), 2005 Afleet Alex (Kentucky Derby broadcast) and 2009 Mine That Bird (Preakness broadcast), and the 2005 and 2006 Preakness broadcasts were nominated for the Sports Emmy Award for Outstanding Live Sports Special.

TNT NBA Tip-off presented by AutoTrader.com

Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley, Kevin McHale, Kenny Smith and Chris Webber

TNT’s David Aldridge interviewed Western Conference All-Stars and UCLA alumni Kevin Love (Minnesota Timberwolves) and Russell Westbrook (Oklahoma City Thunder).

Love on how it felt to make the All-Star team: “It was great.  A lot of people asked if it was different since I was Yao’s (Ming) injury replacement.  I said no, it’s all the same, I still made it here.  It feels great to be back in L.A., it’s almost like a homecoming for Russell (Westbrook) and myself.”

Westbrook on making the All-Star team: “It’s a blessing to represent the (Oklahoma City Thunder) organization.  I’m thankful to be here and want to go out and have some fun.”

McHale on Spurs forward Tim Duncan being named to the All-Star team by San Antonio head coach Gregg Popovich: “This is a career achievement award; (Duncan) has been great year after year.  Team success sometimes gets you in (to the All-Star Game) and (the Spurs) have the best record in the league.”

Barkley on Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant: “(Durant) is instant offense.  Carmelo Anthony is the best scorer in the NBA and (Durant) is second.  He’s got a bright future, he’s fun to watch and he’d better not get my boy (Thunder head coach) Scott Brooks fired so he’d better play well.”

Smith on Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose: “(Rose) has transformed the point guard position with his athleticism and getting to the rim and being able to shoot the outside shot.  He gets to the paint better than any basketball player alive.”

Barkley on Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard: “(Howard) is the most underrated player in the NBA.  What I mean by that is as long as he’s on your team; you’re going to be a contender every year.  I love to watch him play.”

TNT’s Craig Sager interviewed Eastern Conference All-Star Dwight Howard (Orlando Magic) prior to the game

Howard on putting differences aside with rivals to team up during the All-Star Game: “This is the one time that we’re together and it’s not about us right now.  We want to do whatever we can do to have as much fun as possible.  We understand that June is the time to get serious.  But now we’re going to have fun and enjoy ourselves.”

McHale on if there was anyone he didn’t want to talk to when they were teammates on an All-Star team: “Yes, Bill Laimbeer and I still don’t want to talk to him.”

TNT’s David Aldridge interviewed Eastern Conference All-Stars LeBron James (Miami Heat) and Derrick Rose (Chicago Bulls)

James on what it was like to play in his first All-Star Game in 2004: “It was a great experience and I was definitely nervous to be a part of it.  The fans vote you in so they must like what you do.  So I have to go out there and perform and not look bad.”

Rose on how his teammates with the Bulls helped make him an All-Star: “It’s my teammates who give me the confidence to go out there and play.  They trust me to take shots or make plays.  Without them, I wouldn’t be here.  I just try to bring excitement and the fans love it.  I’m happy about that.”

TNT’s Craig Sager interviewed Western Conference All-Stars Kobe Bryant (L.A. Lakers) and Blake Griffin (L.A. Clippers)

Bryant on having the share L.A. with Griffin: “He can have it.  I enjoy watching him just like everyone else.  It’s been entertaining.”

Griffin on what it means to him to make the All-Star team: “It means the most.  To get to play with these guys is big for me.  It’s a level I’d hoped to be at.”

NBA All-Star Game: East (143) vs. West (148)

Marv Albert, Steve Kerr and Reggie Miller with Craig Sager and David Aldridge reporting

Kerr on if there should be concern with the Lakers’ recent struggles: “I think so but I don’t think we should be writing the obituary for the Lakers yet.  There seems to be widespread panic among Lakers fans.  I’ve read some letters to the editor…it’s just amazing what happens when a team that’s won two consecutive titles hits a little dry spell.”

Kerr on the Dallas Mavericks: “The Lakers should be scared of Dallas.  The Mavericks are really good this year.”

Kerr on Miami Heat forward Chris Bosh: “(Bosh has) been a rock for (the Heat).  I don’t know if you can say he’s been quiet when he’s here as an All-Star.  But when you play with Dwyane Wade and LeBron James, I think it is kind of quiet.  Bosh has been there every single night.  You can pretty much count on 18 (points) and ten (rebounds) from Bosh.”

Miller on the Clippers’ Blake Griffin competing with the Knicks’ Amar’e Stoudemire: “Blake Griffin is going to give (Amar’e Stoudemire) a run for his money as power forwards being able to run the floor and finish in traffic.”

TNT’s Craig Sager interviewed pop music sensation Justin Bieber during the game

Bieber on winning the MVP in the All-Star celebrity game: “I’ve never really played in a league and I went out there and had some fun.  I played well but I think (Scottie) Pippen should’ve got the MVP.  It was a fan-voting thing and my fans are crazy.  But it was a lot of fun.”

Kerr on Thunder guard Russell Westbrook “His athleticism is just awe-inspiring when you see it up close.  You can’t get a sense of his speed until you see him live and in-person.  He is absolutely explosive.”

Kerr on the Celtics winning the top seed in the Eastern Conference: “I think it’s critical in the East (Conference) for the Celtics to win that top seed.  They really want to win that top seed and let Chicago and Miami battle it out in round two (of the playoffs).”

Kerr on the Oklahoma City Thunder: “(The Thunder) have quietly crept up on the Lakers.  So many expectations for Oklahoma City before the season started, probably inflated to be frank.  After the playoff performance they had against the Lakers, people thought maybe they could win a championship.  They started off slowly but have picked it up lately.  I think they’re progressing at a natural pace to become one of the best teams in the league.”

******  ******  ******

Halftime

Johnson, Barkley and Smith

Barkley on Kobe Bryant trying to win his fourth All-Star Game MVP, tying Bob Pettit for most All-Star MVPs: “Knowing Kobe like we do, we knew he was going to go for that record.  That doesn’t surprise us at all.  If the West can hold on, he should win it.”

******  ******  ******

TNT’s David Aldridge interviewed Celtics guard Ray Allen during the third quarter

Allen on how the Celtics relying on each other as teammates: “We definitely need each other.  The coaching staff has been great for us this year.  I rely on (Rajon) Rondo, Paul (Pierce), K.G. (Kevin Garnett), ‘Big Baby’ (Glenn Davis), ‘Perk’ (Kendrick Perkins), Shaq (O’Neal), all the guys on the team.  All those guys got us here.”

Kerr on the Mavericks making a run at the NBA Finals: “With the Lakers struggling in the Western Conference, I think it’s right there for Dallas with maybe as good a shot to get to the Finals that they’ve ever had.  To me, this is their best team because of the presence of Tyson Chandler and what he’s meant to their defense.”

Kerr on the possibility of Carmelo Anthony joining Amar’e Stoudemire on the Knicks: “I don’t think (Anthony and Stoudemire fit together), I really don’t.  You’ve got two guys who need the ball.  Neither one is a great defender.  They are both catch-and-hold guys and in (Knicks head coach) Mike D’Antoni’s system, it’s all about spacing the floor and catching and shooting and moving the ball.  It would be exciting but I don’t think it would produce a champion.”

*****     *****     *****     *****     *****

Inside the NBA presented by Hyundai

Johnson, Barkley, McHale, Smith and Webber

TNT’s David Aldridge interviewed Eastern Conference All-Star LeBron James (Miami Heat) following the game

James on the East Conference losing the All-Star Game: “Close but no cigar.  It is the All-Star Game and you’re competitive nature and pride takes over at some point.  We definitely wanted to win and the way we played tonight showed why the NBA and this weekend is the best sporting event in sports.”

McHale on what he liked about the All-Star Game: “I liked that on the bench, LeBron James was really getting after his teammates saying, ‘we have to go out there and compete.’  I like the fact that there is competition in this All-Star Game.  The most impressive thing tonight was the energy that Kobe (Bryant) came out with.”

TNT’s Craig Sager interviewed Thunder forward Kevin Durant following the game

Durant on playing in the All-Star Game: “Playing with great players, I kind of get lost.  I was trying to find positions for me to get easy shots.  Chris Paul is an unbelievable point guard and has unbelievable vision.  Deron Williams and Russell Westbrook as well and I was able to make some shots.  It was better than the three-point contest last night, that’s for sure.”

McHale on the Spurs resting players down the stretch of the regular season: “San Antonio isn’t going to be caught in the Western Conference.  If I was Pop (head coach Gregg Popovich), I would really get after it the next 15 games or so and then start resting guys down the stretch and get them fresh for the playoffs.  I think San Antonio relies on how healthy they are and how fresh they are.  They are going to be tough to beat.”

Smith on the Eastern Conference race coming down to the Heat and the Celtics: “I think the Miami Heat will finish with the best record but the Boston Celtics still have the best team.  (The Celtics) are built more for the playoffs and Miami is built more for the regular season.  (The Heat) can take that long haul because they have three guys (Bosh, James and Wade) who can score well.  The Boston Celtics might not play as hard in certain games down the stretch in the season.”

A total audience of just over 30 million Americans watched Sunday’s race, according to fast national ratings issued today by Nielsen Media Research, making 2011 Daytona 500 the most-watched NASCAR race since 2008. The 30.1 million total viewers, a measure of the audience that saw at least a portion of the race, is +1% higher than last year’s total audience of 29.8 million and +15% better than 2009’s 26.2 million.

Sunday’s Great American Race, which featured a record-setting 74 lead changes and 16 caution flags, earned an 8.7/20 rating/share and averaged 15.6 million viewers, marking a +13% ratings gain over last year (7.7/16) and a +17% rise in average viewership, which represents the average audience across the entire race, over last year’s (13.3 million).

NBA All-Star Game at 60

Ernie Johnson, Kevin McHale, Chris Webber and Charles Barkley

Barkley on playing with the legendary ‘Dr. J’ Julius Erving: “It was an honor and a pleasure playing with Dr. J. I was so excited thinking about my rookie year in ‘84 when I went into the locker room. The night before training camp I was thinking, ‘what do I say to Dr. J?’ I could not sleep the night before my first training camp, but Doc made it easy. He came up and said, ‘Hey, I’m Doc’. I love watching those highlights and I love giving some love to my man Paul Westphal, one of the great people I’d ever been around in the NBA.”

McHale on remembering Dr. J’s hairstyle: “The thing I remember about (Julius Erving), the first time I met him and I played against him, in 1980, he had a great big afro. It had its own orbit.”

Barkley on the 1991 game when Magic Johnson played months after announcing he was HIV positive: “It was awesome. Magic Johnson, who I have great admiration and respect for, it was really cool the way the players embraced him because we didn’t know a lot about HIV at that time. I give the NBA credit, they brought doctors in to say that just hugging guys and sweating is not going to get you HIV positive. It was just really an awesome weekend, Magic was fantastic, Isaiah (Thomas) was a great leader during that time and the fans in Orlando were fantastic.”

Barkley on the 1997 All-Star Game in Cleveland in which the NBA’s 50 Greatest were assembled: “That was the highlight of all my All-Star Games, that was a who’s who. It was very unique because the only one who was not there was Pete Maravich. But to have all those guys together and everybody was fantastic. Kevin (McHale) knows this better than anybody, Bill Russell is the funniest human being in the world. To sit around with him and listen to him tell stories, it was really awesome to be there.”

Barkley on the impact his former teammate Moses Malone had on him and the importance of veteran players to act as mentors in the NBA: “My grandmother is the greatest influence in my life, Muhammed Ali is the second greatest, but the third greatest is Moses Malone. I wasn’t playing a lot my rookie year and I went to him in private and I said, ‘why am I not getting to play?’ Moses said, ‘well, number one, you’re fat, and number two, you’re lazy.’ I’m like, ‘I’m fat and I’m lazy?’ He took me under his wing, I played in college right around 300 pounds, and at that point, I was 290. Moses worked out before, got me down to 250 (pounds) and I became a great player. I called him Dad because I wanted to give him the respect that he deserves. There were a bunch of guys on that team, but Moses got me in shape. Doc (Julius Erving), Moses (Malone), Maurice Cheeks, Andrew Toney, Bobby Jones, Clemon Johnson and Clint Richardson. I think that’s one thing missing from the NBA today, these teams need to have a veteran liaison. I wish these kids stayed in college for two years, we had been drafting high school players, but they need an older guy on the team to teach them about the game, but also to teach them about life.”

Webber on the first time he ever stepped into the locker room at the NBA All-Star Game: “The first time I went into the All-Star locker room, I looked for someone I knew because I was nervous. After that, I took my jersey around and I asked everyone for their autographs. This is the time to be reflective. You realize you don’t get to see guys like this all of the time that you watched All-Star Games and based your career off of.”

NBA Tip-Off presented by AutoTrader.com
Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley and Kevin McHale

McHale on Clippers forward Blake Griffin being the favorite in the Sprite Slam Dunk: “It would be so easy to take Blake Griffin and say if you do the dunks you do in the game you might win the Slam Dunk contest.”

Barkley on his pick for the Sprite Slam Dunk: “I’m going with JaVale McGee. You go back and look at all of (Blake Griffin’s) great dunks, they are just power dunks. I’m not sure he can do any finesse type stuff.  The other guys can do more finesse type things that will get the judges on his side.”

Celtics center Shaquille O’Neal joined the pre-game show live on the set.

O’Neal on taking over for regular studio analyst Kenny Smith: “First of all, I’m not a guest. I’m taking Kenny’s position. I’m so glad to be in Kenny’s seat right now, it feels good. You’re not getting it back, Kenny!”

O’Neal on his gratitude to McHale and Barkley and enjoying All-Star Saturday Night: “First of all, I’d like to thank these two guys for making me who I am. I can remember as a youngster watching the great Kevin McHale, one of the greatest big men, and the great Charles Barkley…in my room in San Antonio (I was) trying to be like these guys. These guys inspired me to come in and work hard.  I’m here at the end of my career, I live in Los Angeles, I’m just here to have a good time. I’m actually here to watch my son’s favorite player, Blake Griffin. He’s a monster, he reminds me of a young Charles Barkley. I’m here having a good time. Again, fellas, Hall of Famers, thank you very much. You inspired me as a youngster to be here and you inspired all these other players.”

TNT’s Cheryl Miller interviewed Bulls guard Derrick Rose.

Rose on Barkley declaring him the mid-season MVP: “It’s great, it’s an honor that he said it. If anything, it will make me work harder. If anything, it will make my teammates come at me a little differently in practice and push me harder. If it weren’t for them I wouldn’t be in this position.”

NBA All-Star Saturday Night presented by State Farm

Haier Shooting Stars
Kevin Harlan, Mike Fratello and Reggie Miller; Cheryl Miller reporting

Participants:

Team Atlanta: NBA TV’s Steve Smith, Al Horford and Coco Miller (winner)

Team Chicago: TNT’s Steve Kerr, Taj Gibson and Catherine Kraayeveld
Team Los Angeles: NBA TV’s Rick Fox, Pau Gasol and Tina Thompson
Team Texas: TNT’s Kenny Smith, Dirk Nowitzki and Roneeka Hodges

Miller on Bulls Taj Gibson’s half court shots: “If I’m any of the players on the Chicago Bulls, some of his (half court) shots were embarrassing!”

Miller on Kenny Smith hitting his first half court shot to eliminate Steve Kerr and Team Chicago during the first round: “There’s been a lot of trash talk going back and forth between Kenny Smith and Steve Kerr. If you watched the Fantasy Draft Show, Steve Kerr was really giving Kenny Smith a lot of jabs. A little bit of payback for Kenny (tonight).”

Miller on Kenny Smith’s physique: “Kenny needs to get in the gym, you see the gut on Kenny? Wow. Get on an exercise bike. Kenny. He and Chuck have been hanging out. What is going on on that set in Atlanta? What are they serving?”

Taco Bell Skills Challenge
Kevin Harlan, Mike Fratello and Reggie Miller; Cheryl Miller reporting

Participants:

Stephen Curry, Golden State Warriors (winner)

Russell Westbrook, Oklahoma City Thunder

John Wall, Washington Wizards

Derrick Rose, Chicago Bulls

Chris Paul, New Orleans Hornets
Miller on the field’s participants: “This may be the best field ever put in this competition. You’re getting a chance to see the young up and coming point guards of this league.”

Fratello on the long outlet pass on the obstacle course: “What’s interesting about this longer pass is they are not used to these outlet passes. They are used to receiving them.”

Miller on Bulls guard Derrick Rose taking his time during the obstacle course and getting eliminated in the first round: “You can’t be too cool in this event, (Derrick Rose) is just chilling. He knows he’s in the All-Star Game tomorrow.”

Foot Locker Three-Point Shootout
Kevin Harlan, Charles Barkley, Reggie Miller and Kenny Smith; Cheryl Miller reporting

Participants:

James Jones, Miami Heat (winner)

Daniel Gibson, Cleveland Cavaliers

Ray Allen, Boston Celtics

Kevin Durant, Oklahoma City Thunder

Dorell Wright, Golden State Warriors

Paul Pierce, Boston Celtics
Smith on the participants not being accustomed to being the only player on the court: “The one thing about the contest that is always different, very rarely are you on center stage in front of 22,000 by yourself, without your teammates. So when you walk onto the floor it’s always a little uncomfortable. But as Reggie does, when you shoot you shoot, after that first rack goes down that’s when everyone starts finding their comfort zone.”

Miller on his pick for the winner of the three-point competition; the player who recently broke his all-time three-point record Ray Allen: “Ray (Allen) shoots the basketball the same way every time. A lot of these other guys are makeshift shooters, they learned how to shoot along the way. Ray shots the same way every single time. I’m going to go with him in this competition.”

Smith on liking Thunder forward Kevin Durant in the shootout: “I like Kevin Durant, his mentality of making buckets, he always wants one more. Sometimes a shooter kind of psyches himself out.”

Smith on the better shooter between Reggie Miller and Ray Allen: “We always have the argument on the better shooter, (is it) Reggie or Ray Allen? Every basketball camp or barbershop (you debate it).”

Barkley: “I would take Reggie Miller. I mean no disrespect to Ray Allen, he’s a great player, but I can’t remember one big shot he’s hit. I can remember a bunch of big shots Reggie Miller has hit.”

Barkley on the best scorers in the NBA: “I think Carmelo Anthony is the best flat-out scorer in the NBA, but this guy, Kevin Durant, to me is second.”

Miller on the approach to the Foot Locker Three-Point Shootout being similar to the Homerun Derby: “This is like when you go to the Major League Baseball All-Star Game, and those guys are doing the Homerun Derby, they switch up their swing just for that. They will tell you, when they come back to play in regular baseball their swing is messed up from participating in the h

Homerun derby. Same thing here, that’s not (Kevin Durant’s) normal gait when he’s taking threes during the game.”

Sprite Slam Dunk Contest
Kevin Harlan, Charles Barkley, Reggie Miller and guest analyst Dwight Howard; Cheryl Miller reporting

Participants:

DeMar DeRozan, Toronto Raptors; coached by Darryl Dawkins

Serge Ibaka, Oklahoma City Thunder; coached by Kevin Durant

JaVale McGee, Washington Wizards; coached by TNT/NBA TV’s Chris Webber

Blake Griffin, L.A. Clippers; coached by TNT’s Kenny Smith (winner)

Howard on his first experience in the Sprite Slam Dunk: “I was a little nervous. I’m not going to lie. I was like ‘what am I going to do to get the crowd’s attention?’ People always say the same thing, ‘he’s a big guy, it’s easy for him to dunk, what is he going to give us?’ You’ve got to get the crowd going, if you don’t get the crowd into it you’re just a sorry dunker.”

Griffin on how his dunk coach Kenny Smith has helped him prepare: “He hasn’t really helped me at all. We’ve just been talking and stuff. I guess I’ m on my own. He just told me how to hype the crowd, hopefully that helps me.”

Smith on his coaching of Blake Griffin tonight: “Sometimes the best coaches get out of the way.”

Barkley on Darryl Dawkins’ suit: “Hey Mama, I found out what happened to your curtains.”

Miller on Serge Ibaka marching out with an entourage and Africa banners: “I love it, it’s all about presentation. Win the crowd, you’ll win your freedom!”

Harlan on Serge Ibaka’s dunk, which started behind the free throw line: “Ibaka is behind it, Dr. J didn’t even do that, nor Michael Jordan. That is right behind the free throw line!”

Miller on JaVale McGee’s dunk into two baskets: “I don’t know if there is anyone else on the planet that can do that.”

Miller on Kenny Smith hyping Blake Griffin’s dunks to the judges: “I tell you what, it’s good to have Flavor Flav as your coach. You need a good hype man. That is exactly what Kenny Smith is right now.”

TNT’s Cheryl Miller interviewed Celtics center Shaquille O’Neal during the Sprite Slam Dunk.

O’Neal on the first round of the Sprite Slam Dunk: “It was an impressive first round, JaVale McGee did something that I’ve never seen before. But Blake Griffin, special big man. He’s one of those big men that only comes around every 10-15 years, he’s a joy to watch.”

Barkley on the four dunk participants: “These four gentlemen brought their A-Game today.”

Barkley on Blake Griffin: “When (Griffin) learns how to play basketball, it’s going to be scary. Right now he’s playing 100% on talent.”

Barkley on the final dunk by Blake Griffin where he dunked over a car: “I hate to say this, but that wasn’t the greatest dunk. That’s like when you got a pretty girl and she’s dumb, it doesn’t matter. That kid is impressive, but that wasn’t an impressive dunk.”

Barkley on Serge Ibaka: “Serge Ibaka got robbed.”

TNT’s Cheryl Miller interviewed Sprite Slam Dunk Champion Blake Griffin.

Griffin on his Sprite Slam Dunk experience: “Just being out here and having the experience, this is something I watched growing up, so to be able to be out here with these guys is a lot of fun.”

Howard on the 2011 Sprite Slam Dunk: “The dunk contest is back. I thought it was a great dunk contest this year. JaVale McGee, Blake Griffin, DeMar DeRozen, Serge Ibaka, those guys were very impressive tonight. The two guys who made the finals, it was a great dunk contest. I’m real proud of JaVale.”

Barkley on NBA All-Star Saturday Night being his favorite night: “I love this weekend, but tonight to me is the best night overall. It was fantastic again this year. I’m proud of NBA Commissioner Stern for putting on this great weekend for all these players.”

Notes from TNT’s Coverage of NBA All-Star 2011 – Friday, February 18, 2011

TNT’s exclusive coverage of NBA All-Star 2011 continues on Saturday, February 19 at 8 p.m. (ET), with NBA All-Star Saturday Night presented by State Farm, which includes the Haier Shooting Stars, the Taco Bell Skills Challenge, the Foot Locker Three-Point Contest, and the Sprite Slam Dunk.  TNT’s coverage of the 2011 NBA All-Star Game on Sunday, February 20 begins at 8:30 p.m. (ET).

TNT’s Craig Sager interviewed Nuggets All-Star Carmelo Anthony about meeting with the NY Knicks & NJ Nets during NBA All-Star 2011

***QUOTE OF THE DAY***

“I looked at Blake Griffin and he’s got more muscles on his muscles than I’ve got muscles.”

— Basketball Hall of Famer and NBA TV / TNT analyst Kevin McHale on Blake Griffin’s physique.  McHale was an assistant coach for the Rookie Team and was mic’d up for the game.

T-Mobile Rookie Challenge and Youth Jam – Rookies (148), Sophomores (140)

Kevin Harlan and Chris Webber with Craig Sager reporting

TNT’s Craig Sager interviewed L.A. Clippers rookie Blake Griffin prior to the game

Griffin on playing in the Rookie Challenge: “It’s my home city and I wanted to come out here and play with these guys.  It’s a once in a lifetime experience so I definitely wanted to do it.”

Webber on Washington Wizards’ rookie John Wall: “He’s had a very good rookie campaign and I really like the way he’s handled his frustrations.  Any time you come in and you’re hurt, you’re the point guard and you want to help your team.  He won more games last year in college than he probably will win in a season that has three times more games.  Just being able to handle those losses, I love how he keeps his head up and keeps working hard.”

TNT analyst and Sophomore Team assistant coach Steve Kerr was mic’d up during the game

Kerr on what he told the Sophomores before the game: “All I told them was to play hard and have fun.  It’s basically a pick-up game and when you play a pick-up game, you want to win.  You just want to play hard and enjoy yourself.  You don’t want anyone to get hurt or come in and take a charge but you want to compete and make it fun for everyone.”

Webber on Oklahoma City Thunder sophomore James Harden: “It’s really fun to watch Oklahoma.  To be able to watch a young team start together and grow and develop together is really fun.  (Harden) is a big part of their success.”

TNT’s Craig Sager interviewed Denver Nuggets All-Star Carmelo Anthony

Anthony on the rumors that he’s meeting with team officials from the New Jersey Nets and the New York Knicks: “No meeting are going to be taking place this weekend.  I’m not even thinking about having a meeting right now.  I just want to have fun and try to enjoy this weekend.”

****    ****    ****    ****

T-Mobile Halftime Report

Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith

Barkley on the Carmelo Anthony trade rumors: “I’m sick of talking about Carmelo Anthony and this trade situation.  I wish they would go ahead and do something.  The Denver Nuggets have a good team and we haven’t talked about them from a basketball standpoint in the past month.  Wherever he goes, he’s a terrific player.  To answer all of these different rumors every day is absurd.”

Smith on Carmelo Anthony being traded to a team that might not be as good as the Nuggets: “I don’t understand how he can go to a team that he feels is not as good as the team that he is on (currently).  So whatever that offer has to be, why would you go to a team that’s not as good as the Denver Nuggets when you’re talking about winning championships.”

Barkley on why the Knicks are considering trading multiple players for Carmelo Anthony: “Why would the Knicks give up anything if they can get him over the summer as a free agent?  Why would you give up all those good players and draft picks?  He says he wants to play in New York, let the trade deadline pass and he’ll come to New York over the summer.  I don’t understand why they are giving up half their roster for a guy they can get for free over the summer.”

****    ****    ****    ****

Kerr on what the Denver GM is going through with the Carmelo Anthony situation: “Last year (as GM of the Phoenix Suns) we were dealing with all the same stuff with Amar’e (Stoudemire) at the same time.  As a GM, that’s a tough position to be in when he’s such a great player and the future of your franchise.”

Webber on Sacramento Kings rookie DeMarcus Cousins’ frustrating rookie season: “Everybody has ups-and-downs as a rookie whether it’s hitting the wall or frustration.  Cousins is a rookie that’s had some frustration and he’s figuring out who he is, where he is and how to play.  Once he looks in the mirror, takes responsibility and just goes hard…he’s going to be good.  I expect great things from him.  It hasn’t been a great rookie year for him but it’s not too late to turn things around in the second half of the season.”

TNT and NBA TV analyst and Rookie Team assistant coach Kevin McHale was mic’d up during the game

McHale on the lack of defense in the Rookie/Sophomore Game: “One thing I’ve noticed about my squad is, do you remember how your dad would walk to school in the snow, uphill both ways?  Our guys are uphill only on defense.  They are running like crazy on offense but it’s uphill on defense.”

TNT analyst and Sophomore Team assistant coach Steve Kerr was mic’d up during the game

Kerr on how it feels to be away from team management: “I’m sleeping nine hours every night (now).”

McHale on Blake Griffin’s physique: “I looked at Blake Griffin and he’s got more muscles on his muscles than I’ve got muscles.”

McHale on the difference between his generation of players and the current generation: “We just played basketball all the time.  We didn’t spend one minute in the weight room.  So I think that we probably knew how to play basketball (better).  These guys work out and do all kinds of stuff.  In a push-up contest, I wouldn’t like my chances against these guys.  But in a basketball contest, I’d take my chances.”

****    ****    ****    ****

Inside the NBA presented by Hyundai live from the Staples Center in LA

Johnson, Barkley and Smith

Smith on how Carmelo Anthony would make the New York Knicks contenders in the Eastern Conference: “Chauncey Billups and (Anthony) going to the New York Knicks?  That is a contending team in the Eastern Conference.  If he goes to New Jersey, in my opinion, that is not a contender but it is a playoff team maybe.  Not this year, but next year.”

Barkley: “Excuse me?  If he goes to the Knicks, they are not one of the four best teams in the East.”

Smith: “Chauncey Billups, Amar’e Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony?  That is a contender in the East.”

Barkley: “They wouldn’t play any defense and they wouldn’t get a rebound.”
