BRAVO

Tennis Coverage

July 30, 2012

“The good news is he looked really good today, very businesslike, served well. Less good news is he faces Novak Djokovic, the second seed. Back to the good news side, he’s done okay against Djokovic, actually a career winning record. This is a great second-round match. And we’ll see if Andy is serving the way he did today, he’s got a real chance.”

-Jon Wertheim on Andy Roddick’s upcoming match against Novak Djokovic

“You hate to say it, a gold to lose, but boy that would be a shock if she didn’t win the gold.”

“At his best, he is capable of beating anybody.”

-Justin Gimblestob on Jon Isner

“He’s still an incredible competitor and in a best-of-three format on this grass surface, I think he’s a wildcard that nobody wants to see and nobody in the top 20 certainly wants see. He’s very dangerous here.”

-Brett Haber on Andy Roddick

“One of the amazing things about winning here at Wimbledon is you get your name up on the board and you often walk by it and to see V. Williams or S. Williams 10 times in the singles, it’s just an incredible story.”

-Renee Stubbs on the Williams sisters singles play success at Wimbledon

“As much as they play singles and as great of singles players as they are, and they don’t play a lot of doubles, because they really only virtually play with each other, getting it back together isn’t as difficult as it would be for somebody else. They know instinctively what each other can do.”

-Renee Stubbs on the Williams sisters playing doubles together

Michelle Beadle Interview with Brendan Hanson

July 30, 2012

Michelle Beadle: Last night in the pool, U.S. swimmers won medals in all four events. One of the vets – oh, that just means old guy – Brendan Hansen with the bronze in the 100 meter breast stroke. He is here now. That was like magical television what just happened there.

Brendan Hansen: I know.

Michelle Beadle: Number one, you didn’t look super thrilled. What was going through your mind right there?

Brendan Hansen: I don’t think there was any kind of emotion at all with that. You know, you just get excited about winning a medal and being up there. I mean, it was a big race for me coming off of I barely made the final and to come out with a medal for the U.S., it was just awesome.

Michelle Beadle: Your fifth Olympic medal career-wise…

Brendan Hansen: Yeah.

Michelle Beadle: …which ain’t too shabby.

Brendan Hansen: No.

Michelle Beadle: Is the eighth lane, we’ve heard the experts talking about, we assume people watching right now need to get smarter with me. So the eighth lane, is it a disadvantage? That’s where you were. Does it hurt, hinder, does it bother you at all?

Brendan Hansen: I think it depends on the race, you know, and the athlete itself. When I swam last night, I just put myself in my zone and my own race and, kind of, went out there and did my thing, and it’s what got me the Olympic team for the U.S. and it’s what won me a medal last night.

Brendan Hansen on U.S. team: This is the closest knit team I have ever been a part of. This is my third Olympics and just from top to bottom, the balance of veteran and rookie. We’re feeding off each other and you’re going to see a lot more swimmers the rest of this week because we are definitely not done. We are at day three of eight and we’re just building momentum for the rest for the week.

Michelle Beadle: Is it true that the gentleman that was in lane seven, Kosuke Kitajima, is your biggest, would you say biggest rival and that you just needed to beat him?

Brendan Hansen: I think it was a two-man race in that respect. The guy that won the gold was obviously the favorite to win after the semis. And for me and Kosuke, it was just, it was like another chapter of our rivalry last night. And to beat him out for the bronze last night made it pretty sweet considering I missed the podium in Beijing in this race.

Michelle Beadle: Now I have to ask you this, 2008, gold medal. You lost it on a plane, bachelor party.

Brendan Hansen: Don’t blame me. Oh, you add bachelor party like it’s…okay.

Michelle Beadle: Well you add that because it’s sexy, obviously. Want to tell us what happened and how you got it back?

Brendan Hansen: Yeah, well you know everyone is excited when you get back to the U.S. to, kind of, see your medal and stuff like that. When you go through any kind of metal detector, the medal here just goes off. Everyone is like, ‘what’s that?’ You know, you are trying to pawn it off like belt buckle, anything you can. Well, they took it out of a secret pocket that Nike had made for us and pout it around on the other side. Well, I was like I just want to get on the plane, let me go and so he grabbed the medal and put it in just the side water bottle pocket. I was like get me out of here, just let me get on the plane. Put my bag underneath in front of me, put on my belt, everything. We took off. The medal rolled four rows back, I had no idea. The best part about this story is that my girlfriend at the time, wife now, was sitting next to me on the plane and I had to tell the stewardess, was like ‘Ma’am, I lost something really important on this plane.’ So what would you think she immediately thought of? She was like, ‘An engagement ring?’ And I was like, ‘No, an Olympic medal.’

This time, he teams up with Ryan Lochte on a U.S. squad that is favored for gold – which could give Phelps career medal No. 20. In the women’s 200m freestyle, 17-year-old phenom Missy Franklin and Allison Schmitt, who took the year off from the University Georgia to train alongside Phelps under coach Bob Bowman, will challenge Italy’s Federica Pellegrini, who has dominated the event by winning two world titles and setting a world record since she won gold in Beijing.

· What’s harder than diving from 33 feet in the air with perfect form? Doing it in perfect sync with the person next to you. That’s the challenge for the divers in the women’s synchronized platform competition. Another challenge: topping China, which has won gold all three times the event has been contested.

  • One night after they go head-to-head in the 200m freestyle, Allison Schmitt and Missy Franklin team up to lead the U.S. in the 4x200m freestyle relay, hoping to reclaim the event from Australia after losing in Beijing for the first time since it was added to the Olympic program in 1996. In the men’s 100m freestyle, top American and former Cal standout Nathan Adrian will try to knock off favorite James Magnussen, the brash new leader of Australian swimming, while Auburn-trained Brazilian star Cesar Cielo is also among a deep international field. Japan’s Kosuke Kitajima, already the greatest breaststroker of all time, is hoping to complete a third straight sweep of the 100m and 200m breaststroke events as he takes on the longer race tonight. In semifinal action, Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte hit the water for the 200m individual medley, while Lochte pulls double-duty in the 200m backstroke.
  • In gymnastics, another Japanese legend, triple world champion Kohei Uchimura, looks to cement his status as one of the greatest gymnasts of all-time by winning the Olympic gold he came one place short of four years ago as a 19-year-old in Beijing. Attempting to stand in his way should be two Americans from unlikely backgrounds: Bronx native John Orozco, the 19-year-old son of a former New York Sanitation Department crew supervisor, and Cuban-born Danell Leyva, whose skillful routines are accompanied by the hyper-animated reactions of his coach and stepfather Yin Alvarez.

· Beach volleyball, one of the Games’ hottest sports, continues at Horse Guards Parade in the heart of ceremonial London. Just down the road from the Queen’s home at Buckingham Palace, the Queens of the sand, Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings, are eyeing a golden three-peat after sweeping the competition in Athens and Beijing without dropping a set.

· In the men’s synchronized springboard, diving’s odd couple looks to continue its winning ways and help the U.S. onto the medal stand. Separated by 13 years and 1700 miles, four-time Olympian Troy Dumais and Stanford freshman Kristian Ipsen won world silver in 2009 just months after they began training together.

MLB on ESPN: Trade Deadline Coverage, Commentator Insights, Upcoming Sunday Night Baseball Schedule

July 30, 2012 By admin

ESPN will provide comprehensive coverage of the MLB trade deadline – Tuesday, July 31, at 4 p.m. ET – highlighted by SportsCenter Special: Baseball Trade Deadline, beginning at 3 p.m. Karl Ravech will host the 90-minute show with analyst John Kruk and ESPN MLB Insiders Buster Olney, Tim Kurkjian and Jayson Stark. ESPN will also present breaking news and analysis leading up to – and following – the 4 p.m. deadline every hour on SportsCenter.

In addition, ESPN will televise three one-hour editions of Baseball Tonight on Tuesday at 7 p.m., 10 p.m. and midnight (ESPN2). Baseball Tonight’s deadline day commentators on Twitter: Ravech (@KarlRavechESPN), Kruk (@JohnKruk_ESPN), Olney (@Buster_ESPN) and Kurkjian (@Kurkjian_ESPN).

ESPN MLB commentators on trade deadline:

Orel Hershiser on trade deadline significance

The trade deadline is an exciting time of the year. It’s either met by teams hoping to improve themselves for the pennant race ahead or by teams who are disappointed and have to wave the white flag and prepare for the following season.

Tim Kurkjian on top deadline storylines

There are many stories still out there as we head for 4 p.m. on Tuesday. It appears the Phillies are ready to unload some players, but it doesn’t look to be Hunter Pence or Cliff Lee. It is more likely it will be some combination of Juan Pierre, Shane Victorino and Joe Blanton. The Rays probably won’t move James Shields given that they are in the Wild Card hunt and given that Evan Longoria could be back in the next week.

The Cubs are looking for the right deal for Ryan Dempster, but if the offer from the Dodgers doesn’t improve, chances are, they will keep Dempster. The Red Sox remain in the Wild Card race and continue to look for help for their starting rotation. And, the Rangers continue to look for a no. 1 starter, but with Cole Hamels and Zack Greinke off the market, finding a no. 1 will be much more difficult, especially considering that they are not willing to trade shortstop Jurickson Profar, their top prospect.

Pedro Gomez (@PedroGomezESPN) on the Texas Rangers

Even though they’ve been in first place most of the season and are coming off consecutive American League championships, don’t expect the Texas Rangers to sit still. There’s a reason they’ve reached these heights and a move is likely coming. General Manager Jon Daniels is a risk-taker, not someone who sits back.

Jayson Stark (@Jaysonst) on the Philadelphia Phillies

Now that the Phillies have buried themselves beyond the point of no miraculous return, they may be the team to watch between now and the deadline. Teams they’ve spoken with say they could make two to three trades. Possibilities include: Shane Victorino (to the Giants, Dodgers, Reds or Pirates), Joe Blanton (to the Orioles), Juan Pierre (to the Reds), Ty Wigginton (to the Yankees) and maybe more. Keep your eyes on the Phillies over the next two days!

Upcoming Sunday Night Baseball schedule

Sun, Aug. 12 8 p.m. Atlanta Braves at New York Mets

July 30, 2012 By admin

July 30, 2012

Bruce Pearl and Seth Greenberg Join ESPN; Jalen Rose to College GameDay

Former college basketball coaches Bruce Pearl and Seth Greenberg have joined ESPN as men’s college basketball analysts and ESPN’s Jalen Rose will be added to the college basketball commentator team, it was announced today by Mark Gross, ESPN Senior Vice President and Executive Producer, Production. Pearl and Greenberg will each serve as studio analysts throughout the season and will call select games from various conferences. Rose will be a featured analyst on the weekly College GameDay as well as other college basketball studio programming, and will work as a game analyst for a series of matchups. Additionally, all three will contribute college basketball commentary to ESPN Radio, ESPN.com and other ESPN outlets.
“Both Seth and Bruce bring a contemporary coaching perspective and a great ability to break down the action in an entertaining style,” Gross said. “Jalen’s NBA analysis has been insightful and engaging and that style will translate to the college game where he’s remained closely connected since the ‘Fab Five’ days.”
Greenberg, who served as a guest ESPN studio analyst during the 2012 NCAA Tournament, most recently coached Virginia Tech for nine seasons (2003-2012). While there, he compiled a 170-123 record. Prior to that, Greenberg had head coaching stints at South Florida (1996-2003) and Long Beach (1990-1996). He was previously an assistant coach at Long Beach, Miami, Virginia, Pittsburgh and Columbia. He is a 1978 graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson with a Broadcast Journalism degree.
Greenberg said, “I am excited and honored to be joining ESPN. I look forward to using the relationships I have developed over 35 years of coaching college basketball to bring unique insights to the ESPN viewing audience.”

Pearl has worked as a college basketball commentator for Sirius XM Radio this past season after coaching the University of Tennessee from 2005-2011. While at Tennessee, Pearl led the team to 145-61 record and NCAA Tournament berths each of his six seasons there. Prior to that, Pearl coached at UW-Milwaukee (2001-2005) and Southern Indiana (1992-2001) after working as an assistant at Iowa and Stanford. Pearl is a 1982 Boston College graduate where he served as a student assistant coach and earned a degree in Business.
Pearl said, “I’m excited and grateful for the opportunity to bring ESPN the same sort of knowledge, passion and intensity that I tried to have as a basketball coach.  I’m anxious to get started and contribute to ESPN’s great college basketball coverage.”

Rose has been an ESPN NBA analyst, primarily for studio coverage since 2007. He will continue to provide NBA studio analysis during the Playoffs. Rose had a successful 13-year NBA career which included playing with the Indiana Pacers in the 2000 Finals. He was a consensus high school All American and team captain of the University of Michigan’s famed “Fab Five” that played for the National Championship in 1992 and 1993. Rose and his production company Three Tier Entertainment served as executive producer of ESPN’s critically acclaimed documentary about that team.
Rose said, “I’m eager to join College GameDay with Rece, Digger, Jay, and the amazing fans across the country! Calling games courtside feeling the spirit and electricity of the crowd plus hearing the gym squeak will be a treat.”

2012 London Olympics – Day 2 Highlights

NBC Primetime Show

Women’s Gymnastics – Team Qualifying

Men’s Swimming – 4 x 100 Freestyle Relay

Women’s Swimming – 100 Butterfly Final

Women’s – 400 Freestyle

Women’s Diving – Women’s 3-Meter

Bob Costas Interview with Bela Karolyi

“As you mentioned a minute ago, this is the ‘All-Around Final’, the final, best gymnasts in the world should be lined up over there. Now, how can you explain to me that the 3rd or 4th ranked gymnast on that order is eliminated because she is accidently from the same country? This is absolutely unacceptable. It is an Olympic final. The first 24 [gymnasts] should be in the final and no one else.”

-Bela Karolyi on the Olympic and International Gymnastics Federation “three-up, three-count” rule that in the finals limits teams to three participants on each apparatus.

“To put it in context compared to another sport, it would be as if in the NCAA Basketball tournament the third best team in the ACC or the third best team in the Big 10 couldn’t go even though obviously they would be better than most of the teams in the field. Dozens and dozens of young women compete; Jordyn Wieber is going to be amongst the top four or five but not among the final 24.”

-Bob Costas on the Olympic and International Gymnastics Federation “three-up, three-count” rule that in the finals limits teams to three participants on each apparatus

Women’s 100 Meter Butterfly

“She’s got to be very careful not to over swim that first 25 meters. As you said Dan, the stars are aligned for her to win gold right here.”

-Rowdy Gaines on Dana Vollmer

“She has done absolutely everything you can possibly do to set herself up for her first individual Olympic gold.”

-Dan Hicks on Dana Vollmer

“Dana Vollmer about to win her first Olympic gold medal and trying to make it a world record as well. First, women, ever, under 56 seconds. That will complete your Olympic dream.”

-Dan Hicks about Dana Vollmer winning the Women’s 100 Meter Butterfly and breaking the world record. Vollmer won with a time of 55.98.

“I’m just so excited right now. I felt good during the first 50…actually lost a swim cap in the pool. It’s in there somewhere. It’s just so exciting about the whole thing.”

-Dana Vollmer on winning the Women’s 100 Meter Butterfly and losing her swim cap in the process.

100 Meter Breaststroke

“You would think that Hansen, being in lane eight, he would have no shot at a medal. But this field is so tightly bunched from two to seven…It’s unbelievable when you only have 3/10ths of a second separating those swimmers.”

-Rowdy Gaines on Brendan Hansen swimming in lane eight. Hansen went on to earn Bronze.

“This is the shiniest bronze medal you will ever see, ever.”

-Brendan Hansen to Andrea Kramer on the possibility that it might be the last Olympic medal of his career.

“Captain Hansen, Captain Comeback and it was well worth it. Bronze for Hansen!”

-Dan Hicks on Brandon Hansen

“It is Cameron van der Burgh who is close to a world record. He’s got the Olympic gold, and you can throw the record in with it!”

-Dan Hicks on Cameron van der Burgh

“And look at this guy (Van der Burgh) Did he just swim huge? And what a world record. What an amazing world record. Unbelievable!

Rowdy Gaines on Cameron can der Burgh’s world record

4×100 Freestyle Relay

NBC cameras captured all the emotion of the 4X100-meter relay as Ryan Lochte couldn’t hold the lead as the U.S. took silver and the French, redeeming their 2008 loss to the U.S., came from behind to win gold. Shots of Michael Phelps rooting on his teammates and the disappointment on the face of Lochte showed the emotion.

Olympic Tennis Coverage

Sunday, July 29, 2012

Ryan Harrison interview – (Harrison’s Olympic debut ended with a mangled racket on Saturday, when he lost to Santiago Giraldo of Colombia 7-5, 6-3)

“Ryan has always been known as ‘the great next American hope in tennis.’ Well, so tell us—you lost control of your temper a little bit; threw your racquet. I trashed you; a lot of people trashed you.”

– Pat O’Brien

“Obviously, the way I handled myself after the match was completely unacceptable. I felt like the situation, when I handled it, it was something that I knew instantly I should not have done. Obviously, playing on such a big stage and representing the country, you’re playing for more than yourself. You have to think about what it means to everyone you’re representing.”

“I hope to move forth but I’m so embarrassed. My actions in no way were intended to represent those of our country. Trying to play the best that I can on such a huge stage, I lost it—and I don’t want to lose any matches because of my emotions. It happened; I wish I could take it back and I feel terrible.”

“I am sorry again to everyone who I offended. I hope you can see the improvements in the future and I’m going to my best to represent the country and everything it stands for better in the future.”

– Ryan Harrison

USA Men’s Basketball vs. France

“This team is fantastic. You know they have the top six scorers in the NBA and they are all on this basketball team. They can score. They are smaller, obviously, than the original Dream Team. Coach K (Michael Krzyzewski) has done a great job. He didn’t just go out and look at the best 12 players in the NBA, even though it looks like that’s who is on there. He went for fit; he went for guys who wanted to play together, who he thought he could put together and fit. And I think that they have done a sensational job.”

– Doc Rivers on the 2012 Men’s Basketball Team

“The original Dream Team, people just wanted to meet them. Now, they want to beat them. And I think that’s the biggest difference.”

– Doc Rivers on comparing the 1992 Dream Team to the 2012 Team

“Lebron is the man for Team USA.”

– Bob Fitzgerald on Lebron James

“You walk in, you feel his maturity, you feel his voice, you feel his energy. He’s the alpha male. He’s the undisputed leader of this team.”

– Doug Collins on Lebron James

“They feel nerves in every single game they play in. And this is big. They have to win. It’s not like they’re trying to win a gold medal. They have to win a gold medal, and that’s the pressure they feel.”

– Doc Rivers on the pre-game nerves of the USA Team

“I’m going to go out on the line and say Team USA.”

– Doc Rivers prediction of who would win the game

“LeBron, offensively, defensively, creating the loudest voice, the biggest player. Kobe is still a factor, but LeBron, he’s really been the guy, the focal point of Team USA.”

– Bob Fitzgerald on LeBron James

“It felt good to get it out of the way. I thought we played well on the defensive end and that allowed us to get the win against France.”

– Kevin Love on Team USA’s win

“They asked me who I wanted and I said, ‘I want the scrub guy, the guy that came off the bench and scored all those buckets.’”

– Doc’s Rivers reaction to Kevin Love on set

“It is a little different. Playing time is well distributed throughout the whole team and whatever the team needs we have different guys that do different things. Whether I’m checking in for Tyson or for Lebron or Melo, or any of those guys, I know I can go in and get the job done.”

– Kevin Love on not being a starter while playing for Team USA

“This is just too much swag right here from Carmelo. He has the shades over the face and the eye blockers and plus a neck pillow. I guess you go to New York and people change.”

Ryan Seacrest Social Media Segment

NOTE: During NBC’s coverage each day and night, the network will feature social media segments that shine a light on the messages, tweets and Olympic moments the world is sharing on Facebook, Twitter and other social platforms. NBC will produce social media segments during each day part, and the segments will be hosted by Ryan Seacrest, Michelle Beadle, and Tamron Hall.

On Facebook, the Queen got the most buzz. The favorite moment for men was the lighting of the Olympic flame and for women, not surprisingly, it was David Beckham.

On Twitter, the Queen inspired more than 1.2 million tweets and a photo of Paul McCartney was the most re-tweeted image from the Opening Ceremony.

The U.S. swim team’s video of “Call Me Maybe” had almost two million views.

Sports featured in the broadcast….

–Men’s Swimming (Men’s 400 Meter IM – Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps)

“Will he even get on the Podium? No second and no third.”

-Dan Hicks on Michael Phelps placing fourth in the race.

“So far, these Olympic Games belong to Ryan Lochte.”

-Dan Hicks on Ryan Lochte taking the gold over Michael Phelps.

Phelps’ post-race interview: “I don’t know, frustrating race this morning. I didn’t really feel that great. I figured 4:06 would be about first, and Ryan had a good one. I guess I saw Tiago and them in the first 50-free and I guess the plan we had coming into it wasn’t the best plan. I don’t know. I have a lot of races and I guess it’s just about putting this one behind me and moving onto the next one…It’s not the start I’d like, but, I don’t know. Like I said before, it’s frustrating. I don’t know. Just have to move on.”

–Beach Volleyball (Misty May Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings)

“I pointed out their undefeated record to Kerri before the match and asked her if she thought it would be possible to carry the streak through the London Games. She told me that their plan was to win every set and match, and keep their opponents to under 17 points each set.”

-Chris Marlowe on the undefeated record of May-Treanor and Walsh in the Olympics. May-Treanor and Walsh went on to win their two sets and held their opponents to 18 points for each set.

“Once again, to those of you who are new to volleyball, Misty May Treanor and Kerri Walsh have never lost a match, not a set.”

-Chris Marlowe on the winning record May-Treanor and Walsh-Jennings have had during the past two Olympic Games (15 consecutive matches and 30 consecutive sets won in Athens & Beijing). Marlowe pointed out the record before the game and again early on in the second set. May-Treanor and Walsh Jennings went on to win the second set and the match, to continue the streak.
