Notes from TNT’s Exclusive Interview with President Barack Obama

May 26, 2010 By admin

Notes from TNT’s exclusive interview with President Barack Obama as conducted by Marv Albert. An extended version of the interview will begin airing immediately following TNT’s pre-game coverage on NBA.com and will air on NBA TV beginning on Wednesday, May 26.

Obama on how often he plays basketball: “Well, these days I probably play once every two to three weeks, not as often as I’d like. But during, say, the health care debate, when things are just going crazy over on Capitol Hill, a lot of times I’ll just come out here and shoot or I’ll play a game of HORSE and it takes an edge off things.”

Obama on if he played against differently since becoming the President: “Well, it is true I usually have guys with guns around, so if somebody takes a real hard foul, they could get in trouble. Nobody ever lets me win because if you let me win, you’ll never hear the end of it. I’ll talk a little trash about you. I’ll make you feel bad about yourself if we beat you real bad.”

Obama on his improved bowling: “My bowling has greatly improved. So Marv, you’re touching on a slightly sensitive point. I’m not going to walk off the set here, but we do have a bowling alley here at the White House and I’ve gotten a lot better.”

Obama on whether he does play-by-play to himself while playing: “In the back of my mind Marv Albert is making the call.  I have your voice in my head as I’m shooting three.”

Obama on his opinion about LeBron James’ impending free agency: “I think that the most important thing for LeBron (James) right now is actually to find a structure where he’s got a coach that he respects and is working hard with teammates who care about him and if that’s in Cleveland, then he should stay in Cleveland. If he doesn’t feel like he can get it there, then someplace else. The one thing I remember about the Bulls was it wasn’t until Michael (Jordan) had confidence in Phil Jackson, Scottie Pippen, Horace Grant, it wasn’t until you got that framework around you that you could be a champion. Same thing happened with Kobe (Bryant), first with Shaq (O’Neal) then later with (Pau) Gasol. He’s gotten that sense of a team around him and I think LeBron hasn’t quite been able to get that yet. That’s what he needs to find.”

Albert: “Could you, on behalf of the Bulls, throw in perhaps a night in the Lincoln Bedroom or a ride on Air Force One?”

Obama: “You know, like I said, I don’t want to meddle. I will say this, (Derrick) Rose, (Joakim) Noah…it’s a pretty good core. You know, you could see LeBron fitting in pretty well.”

Obama on what change he would make if he were the commissioner for a day: “I’ll be honest with you, I think the game is in a good place right now. The way they’re calling the game right now returns basketball to where it’s supposed to be, more of a finesse game. The biggest change I’d probably propose right now is the commissioner needs to figure out how to price tickets so that ordinary people can go to the games. I mean, I think that ticket prices have gotten so high, and I understand that salaries are high, ticket prices are going to be high, but you know, you hate to think that the only person that can go to a game is somebody who’s got a corporate account. And that’s something that I’d love all professional sports, that’s not just NBA, but all professional sports to be thinking about that a little more.”

Obama on sports figures and organization getting involved in political issues, such as the Phoenix Suns taking a stand against the Arizona immigration law: “I think that just because somebody’s a sports figure or you’ve got a sports team doesn’t mean that you’re not part of the community and you’re not part of our democracy. I think it’s terrific that the Suns, who obviously feel very strongly about their community, recognize that a big part of their community felt threatened by this new law.  You know, when I was growing up, you had figures like Arthur Ashe and Bill Russell who routinely would talk about the world around them. You wouldn’t always agree with them, but that sense that people are engaged in the big issues of the day, I think, is a positive thing. I don’t think that either players or franchises need to always steer away from controversy. I happen to personally think that the Arizona Law is a bad idea, I’ve said so publically, and I see no reason why these guys can’t make the same statement.”

Obama on the Washington Wizards winning the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft: “(John) Wall is a terrific player. He’s got NBA speed, NBA body, great jump shot, unselfish, really impressive. There’s only upside for that kid. And I think it’d be great for him to come to Washington. I became very close to Abe Pollin, who was a great supporter, he and his wife. He just passed away recently, but there’s an example of a guy who constantly gave back to his community. I mean, almost single-handedly, he invested in downtown Washington at a time when it was in really bad shape, and you know, generated huge affection in this city and it was wonderful to see his widow there getting that number one pick. I only wish the best for that franchise.”

Obama on his assessment of the NBA Finals contenders: “Boston surprised me. They gelled in the playoffs in a way that they hadn’t all through the season. (Rajon) Rondo’s become one of the best point guards in the league in no time. I mean, when he gets a real jump shot, he’s going to be unstoppable.  But I’ve got to go with the Lakers again. I think (Pau) Gasol may be the best big man in the league right now. He’s different from Dwight Howard, but he’s (got) unbelievable footwork, speed, savvy, he’s playing magnificently. Kobe (Bryant) is the fiercest competitor in the league and they’ve got what I continue to believe is the best coach in the NBA right now in Phil Jackson, so their going to be formidable and I think it’ll be a tough series. Boston’s a veteran club, but the Lakers are looking pretty good.”

Obama on his closing thoughts for the TNT guys: “Listen, you are welcome, Marv, to call play-by-play in any pick up game that we have. I want you to let Kenny know and Charles know that I appreciate them.  And I am curious (about) Charles’ golf game though. I want to see if that swing ever got fixed.  Charles is a great guy, great friend, but it’s a scary golf swing.”

Indianapolis 500 Airing on ABC for 46th Consecutive Year

A  Memorial Day weekend TV tradition since 1965 continues on Sunday, May 30, when the Indianapolis 500 airs on ABC for the 46th consecutive year. ESPN on ABC’s live, high definition telecast from Indianapolis Motor Speedway is presented by GoDaddy.com and begins with a one-hour pre-race show at noon ET. The race coverage begins at 1 p.m.

“As one of the world’s marquee sporting events, the Indianapolis 500 is something that sports fans look forward to every year,” said John Wildhack, ESPN executive vice president, programming & acquisitions. “We join in that enthusiasm and consider it an honor to televise the race in America and on our international platforms.”

ESPN’s production will use 59 cameras to televise the premier race of the IZOD IndyCar Series, including a 360-degree rotating onboard camera mounted behind the driver on multiple cars. Unique views will be provided by Track Cam, a high definition camera running on a cable over pit road and the frontstretch that can move at more than 80 mph. All 33 cars will carry GPS boxes for the Sportvision RaceFX system to provide telemetry and pointers to help identify the cars for viewers. ESPN will use a radio replay system that can record, play back and edit radios from any of the 33 drivers and viewers will learn more about the technical aspects of the sport with segments from the Emmy-winning ESPN Craftsman Tech Garage.

Marty Reid will call the race with analysis by former IZOD IndyCar Series star Scott Goodyear and 1998 Indy 500 winner Eddie Cheever. Reporting from the pits will be Rick DeBruhl, Jamie Little, Dr. Jerry Punch and Vince Welch. Hosting the telecast will be Brent Musburger. ESPN senior motorsports producer Neil Goldberg will produce the telecast and Bruce Watson will direct.

The one-hour pre-race show will include interviews with many of the 33 starting drivers as well as special features:

  • A look at the up-and-down past year of polesitter and defending race winner Helio Castroneves, from beating tax evasion charges to winning Indy to becoming a father.
  • Ryan Hunter-Reay is featured in an ESPN Sports Science piece comparing driving an Indy Car to flying a fighter jet.
  • Drivers who have and have not won at Indy talk about the Blueprint for Success at the famous track.
  • ABC Good Morning America host Robin Roberts, the honorary pace car driver for the Indy 500, conducted a unique sit-down interview with Danica Patrick that will appear both on GMA and in the pre-race show.
  • Bobby and Graham Rahal are interviewed together in the rarely-seen basement of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, among some of the classic cars that are not normally seen by the public.
  • An animated feature on the size, scope and speed of Indianapolis Motor Speedway compares the track to the George Washington Bridge, the U.S.S. Enterprise and the Rose Bowl. The animation also illustrates the speeds reached by Indy Cars.
  • A look back on ABC’s 46 years at Indy, a montage of on-camera interviews with some of the iconic announcers through the years mixed with the greatest moments from those races.
  • A Memorial Day tribute salute to veterans, in the words of family members of individuals who died in the line of duty.

The opening segment will have the theme of a blockbuster movie trailer, with a central character, The Keeper, that guards the coveted Borg-Warner Trophy and introduces the talented characters who will be vying for the trophy. Several IndyCar and Indianapolis Motor Speedway officials have cameo roles in the segment which also includes drivers Castroneves, Patrick, Dario Franchitti, Scott Dixon and Dan Wheldon.

Musburger will host the telecast from an IZOD IndyCar Series-branded set at pit exit. The new set also includes an 8-foot replica of the Speedway’s famous Wings and Wheels logo.

Other ESPN Platforms

In addition to the live telecast on ABC, the Indianapolis 500 will receive ESPN multiplatform coverage on the following outlets:

ESPN International’s networks and syndication of the Indy 500 will reach more than 252 million households. In addition, U.S. troops serving overseas and on Navy vessels around the world will watch via a broadcast agreement between ESPN and the American Forces Network, bringing the total to 213 countries and territories.

Hill, Strahan & Buck React to NY/NJ 2014 Super Bowl

HILL, STRAHAN & BUCK REACT TO NY/NJ WINNING BID

TO HOST 2014 SUPER BOWL

Today the National Football League owners voted New York/New Jersey as the site Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014. As the network home of the NFC package through the 2013 season, FOX Sports is proud to be the network broadcasting this historic event. Below are reactions from FOX Sports Media Group Chairman & CEO David Hill, NFL on FOX lead play-by-play announcer Joe Buck and FOX NFL SUNDAY analyst Michael Strahan.

FOX SPORTS MEDIA GROUP CHAIRMAN & CEO DAVID HILL: “Having the Super Bowl in the new home of the Jets and Giants is fantastic. It’s the biggest sports event in the country on the country’s biggest stage. It’s different, and should create buzz for months leading up to it and if we’re really lucky, it will begin snowing right after halftime.”

FOX NFL SUNDAY ANALYST MICHAEL STRAHAN: “It’s going to be great. It will add a new dimension to the game that we haven’t seen in many years. Many of the NFL’s most memorable games have been played in inclement weather. As a player, you’ll play anywhere to have an opportunity to win a Super Bowl and as a fan, you’ll be part of a historic game. The way I look at it, anyone who is worried about snow or if it will be too cold doesn’t deserve to go to or play in a Super Bowl.”

FOX SPORTS LEAD PLAY-BY-PLAY ANNOUNCER JOE BUCK: “Staging an event as big as the Super Bowl in New York will be terrific. As far as the weather complaints, you play both conference championship games in whatever city and don’t consider the temperature or conditions. Football is an elements game. I know if I had a ticket, I’d go.”

The Hall of Fame Rock Band’s “T.N.T.” Will be Woven Throughout NASCAR on TNT Telecasts and Marketing Campaign

TNT and NASCAR.COM Give Fans a “Million Dollar Challenge” Beginning with Network’s First Race on June 6

Turner Network Television (TNT) announced today that it has joined forces with Hall of Fame rockers AC/DC to feature the band’s single “T.N.T” as the network’s theme song for its 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series coverage.  The song will serve as the primary musical bed for all six of TNT’s races, which begin with the Gillette Fusion ProGlide 500 presented by Target on Sunday, June 6 in Pocono, Pa., as well as for the network’s multiplatform marketing campaign surrounding its exclusive race coverage, which includes a presence on social media, print outlets, national television, local radio and print. The song has been rereleased on the band’s latest album, AC/DC: Iron Man 2 which features 15 of the band’s classic songs.

Should a fan correctly select the top ten finishing drivers all in their proper finishing order, the fan could win up to $1 million (if more than one fan selects the correct finishing lineup, they will equally share the million dollar prize).  The game will open for upcoming races on the Wednesday after each previous raceday and will not close until 25% of the present week’s race is complete, allowing participants to change their line-ups for a portion of the race.  Fans have six chances to win as they can pick the top 10 finishers for all six of TNT’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races.

The additional multiplatform assets of TNT’s NASCAR marketing campaign will include prominent online promotion on NASCAR.COM and Yahoo! NASCAR as well as video ads on the social media site Facebook, print advertisements in USA Today and NASCAR Illustrated, sports talk radio DJ endorsements, spot radio advertisements in select markets, a national satellite buy among various networks and spot television ads during regional sporting events and across the Turner-owned networks including TNT, TBS, CNN and truTV.
