FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Virginia Beach, Va. – Monday, October 4, 2010 – UFL Virginia team General Manager DOUG WILLIAMS will announce the result of the first part of the competition to name the region’s expansion team live on his radio show on 102.1 The Game from 4-5pm EDT today.
The United Football League invited sports fans to vote for their favorite name for the new professional football team that will begin play when the third UFL season kicks off in 2011.
Former Washington Redskins legend Williams will announce whether the team will be named ‘Virginia’ or ‘Hampton Roads’ based on the results of votes that were cast between September 19 and October 2. The ‘Your Town, Your Team, Your Name – You Make the Call’ fan poll was hosted by The Virginian-Pilot, PilotOnline.com, Radio 102.1 The Game, FanHouse.com and UFL-Football.com.
“I am excited to tell fans the first part of the name they will be chanting from the stands when we kick off next season,” said Williams. “We have a clear winner thanks to the opinion of the team’s fan base which is already growing here in Virginia and across the country. Tune in tonight to hear the results of the vote.”
Tonight between 4pm and 5pm, Williams will also unveil a new shortlist list of three team nicknames that proved the most popular from five original options and fans’ own suggestions.
The second part of the competition will ask fans to vote for their favorite name from the shortlist of three. The poll will run until Sunday, October 17 through The Virginian-Pilot, PilotOnline.com, Radio 102.1 The Game, FanHouse.com and UFL-Football.com. The winning name will be announced during the 2010 UFL season.
