ESPN’s Fortnight of Wimbledon Viewership Climbs 26 Percent

ESPN’s viewership for the fortnight of exclusive daily live marathon linear TV coverage of The Championships, Wimbledon climbed 26 percent from 2021 to an average of 647,000 viewers (P2+) over its nearly 150 hours of English-language coverage.  The number of hours encompasses live match coverage across ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC.  In total, ESPN/ESPN2/ABC presented 157 hours from London when including the six Breakfast at Wimbledon programs and encores of the Ladies’ and Gentlemen’s Championships on ABC.

First-Time Winner Guaranteed at Wimbledon Ladies’ Championship Saturday on ESPN: No. 3 Ons Jabeur vs. No. 17 Elena Rybakina

ESPN’s exclusive coverage of The Championships, Wimbledon continues from London on ESPN on Saturday, July 9, with Breakfast at Wimbledon at 8 a.m. ET and the Ladies’ Championship between No. 3 seed Ons Jabeur of Tunisia and No. 17 Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan at 9 a.m.  It will be the fifth consecutive Wimbledon with a first-time Ladies champion in SW19.  Also, not only would it be the first Major title for either woman, but neither has previously reached a Major’s semifinals. The two have faced each other three times with Jabeur winning two.  Chris Fowler will call the match with Hall of Famer Chrissie Evert.

First Live Wimbledon Matches on ABC Highlight the “Middle Weekend”

As part of ESPN’s expanded and exclusive coverage of this year’s tournament – and for the first time in its long and storied history of broadcasting sports – this weekend ABC will air live Wimbledon matches.  ESPN’s daily marathon telecasts will begin at 7 a.m. ET both Saturday, July 2, and Sunday, July 3, with the one-hour Breakfast at Wimbledon, hosted by Chris McKendry, presenting highlights, discussion, interviews and features. Other weekend highlights include a special ceremony celebrating the 100th anniversary of the famed Centre Court – called “the cathedral of tennis” – on Sunday.

ESPN’s 10th exclusive, all-live, daily presentation of The Championships, Wimbledon – every match on every court across linear and streaming platforms – will get underway tomorrow, Monday, June 27, at 6 a.m. ET on ESPN, ESPN+, ESPN Deportes and ESPN3.  The “first-ball-to-last-ball” coverage will encompass all courts and all divisions, and all of Monday’s singles matches will be streaming live.

ESPN tennis analysts Chrissie Evert and John McEnroe spoke with media today, previewing Wimbledon, a tournament they each won three times. They also discussed a wide range of topics in the sport, including the state of Serena Williams after a year away; the impact of no Roger Federer, rankings points or Russians; on-court coaching; the charm of Wimbledon’s Centre Court, celebrating its 100th anniversary; and learning from failure. ESPN’s exclusive first ball to last ball coverage – all courts, all matches, all days across platforms – begins Monday, June 27.  Here is the transcript. ESPN Exclusively Presents The Championships, Wimbledon Beginning June 27

ESPN will present exclusively and in its entirety The Championships, Wimbledon from the All England Lawn Tennis Club next Monday, June 27.  In addition to television coverage on ESPN and ESPN2 and streaming on ESPN+ and ESPN3, for the first time in history, ABC will broadcast live matches.  The fortnight of daily marathon coverage from all 18 courts – first ball to last ball – will culminate with the Ladies’ Championship and the Gentlemen’s Doubles Championship on ESPN on Saturday, July 9, and the Gentlemen’s Championship and the Ladies’ Doubles Championship on Sunday, July 10.

All Four Days of Wimbledon Qualifying Streams Exclusively on ESPN+ Beginning Monday, June 20, at 6 a.m. ET

All four days of Ladies’ and Gentlemen’s singles qualifying for The Championships, Wimbledon, will be seen exclusively on ESPN+ starting Monday, June 20, with all-day action from one of the grass courts at the Bank of England Sports Centre in Roehampton, not far from Wimbledon and the All England Lawn Tennis Club.    Qualifying for the coveted few open slots in the Wimbledon draws – 16 each for Gentlemen and Ladies – will begin each day at 6 a.m. ET through Thursday, June 23, with four matches scheduled per day.  ESPN has presented the Qualifying rounds exclusively since they began being produced in 2017, and ESPN+ has been the exclusive home since it debuted in 2018.
