DORELL WRIGHT to Join Returning Warriors Analysts CHRIS MULLIN & JENNIFER AZZI

Bay Area Broadcasting Legend GREG PAPA to host “Giants Pre/Postgame Live” beginning in 2021; Papa to Continue 49ers and Warriors Coverage Roles

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (November 23, 2020) – NBC Sports Bay Area today announced a pair of on-air talent moves for its surrounding pre/postgame coverage of the Golden State Warriors and San Francisco Giants for the upcoming 2020-21 NBA and 2021 MLB seasons.  Beginning December 1, Bonta Hill has been named the new host of Warriors Pre/Postgame Live, while Bay Area broadcasting legend Greg Papa will shift to Giants Pre/Postgame Live beginning next spring.  The announcements were made by Matt Murphy, Senior Vice President/General Manager, NBC Sports Bay Area/California.

Born and raised in San Francisco, Hill currently hosts the popular The Morning Roast with Bonta, Kate & Joe show on Entercom’s 95.7 FM “The Game,” a position he will continue to hold in addition to his new role with NBC Sports Bay Area.  A lifelong Bay Area sports fan, Hill gained his vast multiplatform experience with prior positions held at Cumulus Radio, Yardbarker, Bleacher Report, along with sports correspondent positions with the San Francisco Examiner and San Francisco Chronicle covering professional, collegiate and preps sporting events.  Hill earned his degree in broadcast journalism from San Francisco State University.

In his famed, three-decade-plus career, Papa began his pro sports broadcasting journey handling radio and television duties with the Indiana Pacers from 1984-86 immediately following his graduation from Syracuse University.  Papa then served as the voice of the Warriors for 11 seasons (1986-97), before moving on to San Antonio to be the lead play-by-play announcer for the Spurs (1997-2000).  Following his stint with the Spurs, Papa spent 14 years as the Oakland A’s television play-by-play announcer for a number of Bay Area’s regional sports networks from 1990-2003.  He currently serves as host of NBC Sports Bay Area’s 49ers Central: Ask Papa and 49ers Game Plan, along with being the 49ers radio play-by-play announcer on KNBR AM 680 “The Sports Leader” and the 49ers Radio Network.  Papa will continue to host select Warriors Pre/Postgame Live airings during the 2020-21 NBA season.  Papa previously hosted Giants Pre/Postgame Live from 2010-16, a time frame highlighted by three Giants World Series championships (2010, 2012, 2014).  A three-time “California Sportscaster of the Year” and San Francisco/Northern California Emmy-award winner, Papa was also play-by-play voice for the San Francisco Giants and Oakland Raiders, along with handling numerous national network assignments with ABC, NBC, ESPN and Turner Sports.

“Greg is one of the most popular broadcasters in our region’s history and is a respected pro who has literally done it all,” said Murphy.  “We look forward to delivering Greg’s vast knowledge and always-entertaining approach to our Giants coverage beginning next season.  As for Bonta, his connection with Bay Area sports fans continues to grow and his passion for the NBA speaks volumes.  We’re excited to have Bonta join our team as he will be an excellent addition to our insightful roster of Warriors experts.”

In addition to Hill being named NBC Sports Bay Area’s new Warriors Pre/Postgame Live host, the network also announced Warriors legend/five-time NBA All-Star Chris Mullin will return as a studio analyst for the upcoming season, along with USA Olympic Gold Medalist/former University of San Francisco women’s head basketball coach Jennifer Azzi for select telecasts.

New to Warriors Pre/Postgame Live this season will be the addition of studio analyst Dorell Wright.  Wright, a standout three-point specialist, played ten seasons in the NBA, including two with the Warriors in 2010-11 & 2011-12.  He earned an NBA championship with the Miami Heat in 2006 on a roster that included legendary teammates Shaquille O’Neal, Dwyane Wade, Gary Payton, Antoine Walker and Alonzo Mourning.

Never-Before-Released 2011 Interview with Former Oakland Raiders Center Barret Robbins from Prison Featured in Fifth Installment of Six-Part Initiative

Robbins Reveals Why He Disappeared and Missed Playing in Raiders Loss in Super Bowl XXXVII Following 2002 Season

NBC Sports Bay Area, NBC Sports California’s Podcast Production Features Interviews with Tim Brown, Rod Woodson and Amy Trask; Introduction from Mike Tirico

“Sports Uncovered: The Lost Barret Robbins Interview,” a Half-Hour Version of Robbins’ 2011 Sit-Down Interview, to Air on NBC Sports Bay Area Tonight at 10 P.M. PT

STAMFORD, Conn. – July 9, 2020 – NBC Sports Regional Networks’ six-episode podcast anthology series, “Sports Uncovered,” which re-examines some of the most memorable and compelling storylines and events in sports history, continues today with the debut of The Mysterious Disappearance that Changed a Super Bowl, the story of former Oakland Raiders All-Pro offensive lineman Barret Robbins’ Super Bowl XXXVII disappearance. The episode is available for download here.

Produced by NBC Sports Bay Area and NBC Sports California, the fifth installment of “Sports Uncovered” features a never-before-heard 2011 Robbins interview previously believed to be lost but recently found in the network’s San Francisco offices, as well as 2011 interviews from Raiders teammates Tim Brown, Lincoln Kennedy, Bill Romanowski, Barry Sims and the late Mo Collins. Robbins – in a South Florida prison at the time of the interview – details the mental-health and addiction issues that caused him to leave the Raiders for Mexico just two days before Super Bowl XXXVII. That ultimately led to his benching for the game and eventually the end of a promising NFL career, followed by a post-football life filled by run-ins with the law.

Other stories uncovered in the podcast:

    • How a former Raiders teammate found Robbins in a San Diego bar and brought him back to the team hotel, one day after the center had gone missing.
    • Why some ex-Raiders believe one coaching decision put too much pressure on Robbins and also sabotaged the team’s chances to win the Super Bowl against its former coach, Jon Gruden.
    • Why the Raiders’ locker room might not have been the best place for Robbins, and why the team decided to bring him back for the 2003 season, despite his Super Bowl disappearance.
    • Deeper details about Robbins’ troubled post-NFL days, including his first-person account of being shot by Miami Beach police in 2005, and a recently uncovered 2019 arrest that could hint at his current whereabouts and well-being.

Those stories and more are told by numerous notable guests, including Robbins’ former Raiders teammates, team executives and media members in recent interviews. The list of contributors also includes ex-Raiders players Rod Woodson, Calvin Branch and Anthony Dorsett; former Raiders executives Amy Trask and Bruce Allen; Emmy-winning NFL reporter Andrea Kremer; former Raiders radio play-by-play announcer Greg Papa, who conducted that 2011 interview with Robbins; and others.

Following are selected quotes from The Mysterious Disappearance that Changed a Super Bowl:

“Came to the hotel in a cab with a couple guys that just were hanging out with me. And I don’t – to this day, I don’t know who they were – but I got to my hotel, filled my backpack up with all the liquor from the minibar and took off toward Mexico.” – Barret Robbins on leaving the team hotel for Mexico two days before Super Bowl XXXVII

“After the walk-through, we informed the league. They’re able to put out an all-points bulletin for him. We don’t know if he’s been kidnapped. We don’t know where he is or what condition he’s in.” – Former Raiders GM Bruce Allen on informing the NFL of Barret Robbins’ disappearance

“There were a number of players who felt that Barret’s absence was so deflating for the team, that they felt they had lost the game before it had even begun.” – NFL Network’s Andrea Kremer on Barret Robbins’ absence and its effect on his teammates

“I was crying. I was in bad shape, man. I was so sad at that point. I knew it was going to end up leading me to not be able to play in the Super Bowl and live my dream.” – Barret Robbins on returning to the team hotel and realizing he might not play in the Super Bowl

“He was in a difficult condition, in that he was cheery. Because at the beginning, you’re thinking, ‘Wow. This is interesting.’ He had told me he was excited about that we had won the game and he asked to catch a plane for the Pro Bowl the next morning.” – Bruce Allen on Barret Robbins’ return to the team hotel and thinking the Raiders already had won the Super Bowl

“I saw a couple plays on TV. They were watching it there (in the hospital) when I got there. But I didn’t sit and watch it. Was there while I was on suicide watch.” – Barret Robbins on watching the Super Bowl from the hospital

“I can remember one day, almost a month in the offseason, where I couldn’t get out of bed. I mean, to think a man could have a $2 million house and $500,000 worth of cars, and whatever he wanted, but still be depressed and not be able to get out of bed. That tells you that depression is very powerful.” – Barret Robbins on his bout with depression

“I had actually, quite early that morning, had gone out on a run, and I saw Barret in the lobby. I ran into him, went up to my room, and not long thereafter, Al (Davis) called me and said, ‘Barret’s not playing.’ I said, ‘I just saw him in the lobby. He can play.’ And Al shared with me that others had made the decision to send Barret home. And I hung up the phone, and I looked at my husband, and I said, ‘We just lost the game.’” – Former Raiders CEO Amy Trask on her reaction on Barret Robbins not playing in the Super Bowl

“I think this guy was probably the worst thing that ever happened to the Raiders organization.” – Hall of Famer and former Raiders receiver Tim Brown on former Raiders coach Bill Callahan

“It was a shocker to everybody. I know for me, I just couldn’t believe it. I dropped my book in the meeting when he said it. I know my 17 years of play, even in the preseason, you don’t do that.” – Hall of Famer and former Raiders safety Rod Woodson on Bill Callahan changing the offensive game plan just two days before the Super Bowl

“So, we go into the Super Bowl knowing that we don’t have a chance to win. The guy who this is going to affect the most is Barret Robbins. Because Barret Robbins is the one who has to make all the calls. He is begging Callahan, ‘Don’t do this. I don’t have time to prepare for this. Please don’t do this.’ I was with him, and he’s begging him, ‘You can’t do this to me.’… Well, it’s that night that Barret went out and went AWOL. That night. Now, does one have to do with another? I say yes. You may say no. I say yes.” – Tim Brown on Barret Robbins pleading with coach Bill Callahan not to change the Raiders’ offensive game plan

“That was the Raider way, you know. You work hard, you play hard. That was the mindset. That culture was very dangerous, looking back now because when you’re in your 20s and the world expects you to win every day, every week, every season, it’s a lot of stress and pressure on you. And if you had no one to talk to about it, then any type of underlying mental issue you have, they’re going to come out sooner or later.” – Former Raiders defensive lineman Rod Coleman on the pressures of playing in the NFL

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA SPORTS TEAMS, NBC SPORTS BAY AREA, NBC SPORTS CALIFORNIA AND TIMBUK2 TEAM UP TO DONATE FACE MASKS AND BANDANAS AMID COVID-19 PANDEMIC

April 24, 2020 By admin

More Than 10,000 T-Shirts From Giants, A’s, Warriors, Kings, Sharks, Earthquakes, 49ers, and NBC Sports Bay Area & California Donated to Create 50,000 Face Masks and Bandanas

San Francisco-Based Timbuk2 to Manufacture Face Masks and Bandanas

Masks and Bandanas to be Donated to Bay Area Community Services and UCSF

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – April 24, 2020 – NBC Sports Bay Area and NBC Sports California, together with its team partners – MLB’s San Francisco Giants and Oakland A’s, NBA’s Golden State Warriors and Sacramento Kings, NHL’s San Jose Sharks, MLS’s San Jose Earthquakes and NFL’s San Francisco 49ers, along with the teams’ apparel and merchandise partner Fanatics – and San Francisco-based bag manufacturer Timbuk2 have teamed up to donate 50,000 face masks and bandanas to Northern California health care providers in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The teams and NBC Sports have donated more than 10,000 new t-shirts, and Timbuk2 will create cloth face masks and bandanas from the t-shirt material.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the City and County of San Francisco recommend wearing a cloth face covering in public settings. Additionally, the CDC encourages the public to reserve N95 respirators and surgical masks for healthcare workers and other medical first responders. For more information, visit the CDC website here and the City and County of San Francisco website here.

Timbuk2 is shifting production from bags to masks, working to fulfill the current demand for 50,000 cloth face coverings which will be donated to Bay Area Community Services, UCSF and other groups in need.

Images of the face masks and bandanas being manufactured can be found here.

“We are grateful to partner with the local sports teams and Timbuk2 to provide these critically needed protective masks and bandanas,” said Matt Murphy, Senior Vice President and General Manager of NBC Sports Bay Area and NBC Sports California. “We hope this initiative will encourage fans to follow the CDC’s guidance on wearing a cloth face covering in public spaces, while reserving the supply of medical-grade masks for those on the coronavirus front lines.”

“Now more than ever, we must all work together to respond with compassion, solidarity and ingenuity to support the healthcare professionals and other frontline heroes who are working to save lives at the risk of their own,” said Emily Raimondi, Senior Director of Marketing and Creative Services of NBC Sports Bay Area and NBC Sports California. “We are committed to unite and protect our community by being a part of this team effort to provide face masks and bandanas, and are thankful for our team partners and Timbuk2’s support of this critically important initiative.”

“One of our core values is to give a damn about the world around us,” said Timbuk2 Head of Marketing, Michelle Nadeau. “When it came time to determine how Timbuk2 could support our local community in fighting this pandemic, shifting our San Francisco manufacturing from messengers to masks and bandanas was a no-brainer. It’s been an honor to work with such world-class organizations, and we are proud to support our frontline workers.”

NBC SPORTS BAY AREA AND THE SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS INTRODUCE “SPLITKAST” FOR 2020 MLB SEASON; MIKE KRUKOW SIGNS TWO-YEAR CONTRACT EXTENSION

February 10, 2020 By admin

Color Commentator Mike Krukow to Join Play-by-Play Announcer Duane Kuiper

for 22 N.L. West Road Games via Live Remote from the NBC Sports Studios

“SplitKast” Debuts on Season Opener, Thursday, March 26th

Giants at Los Angeles Dodgers on NBC Sports Bay Area

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – February 7, 2020 – NBC Sports Bay Area and the San Francisco Giants today announced “SplitKast,” an innovative, first-of-its-kind MLB broadcast. Color commentator Mike Krukow will join his longtime partner and play-by-play announcer Duane Kuiper for 22 N.L. West road games (Arizona D-backs, Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres) during the 2020 MLB season via live remote from the NBC Sports Bay Area studios in San Francisco. He will provide commentary as Kuiper calls the game from the stadium’s broadcast booth.

“SplitKast” will debut on the Giants season opener on Thursday, March 26th against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. Krukow will continue to call 81 Giants games with Kuiper from Oracle Park.

It was also announced by Giants President and Chief Executive Officer Larry Baer and NBC Sports Bay Area and NBC Sports California Senior Vice President and General Manager Matt Murphy that Krukow has signed a two-year contract extension. He will continue to call games with Kuiper on NBC Sports Bay Area through the 2021 MLB season, which will mark their 30th season together as broadcast partners.

“We are thrilled to have our iconic broadcast team of Kruk and Kuip together as we enter this new decade of Giants baseball,” said Baer. “We also commend our broadcast partner, NBC Sports Bay Area, for their creativity and use of technology that will keep this tandem together, when one is on the road and the other back at home, which is the ultimate benefit for our fans.”

“Kruk and Kuip are Bay Area treasures, and it is important that these two beloved broadcasters continue to call games together for Giants fans to enjoy,” said Murphy. “The innovative integration of Kruk and Kuip’s commentary from separate locations into a seamless broadcast is an example of how NBC Sports Bay Area uses technology to deliver memorable experiences to fans.”

NBC Sports Bay Area will provide a dedicated studio for “SplitKast” broadcasts at its San Francisco headquarters. During each telecast, Krukow will be providing commentary while watching a monitor in San Francisco showing a real-time feed of the game, to go along with Kuiper’s play-by-play call from the out-of-town stadium’s broadcast booth. An additional monitor will be fed from the production truck to give Krukow the opportunity to view various camera angles of the ballpark and play. He will be able to communicate with the producer and director using audio channels from the fiber optic transmission connecting the San Francisco studio to the production truck at the stadium. The “SplitKast” production team will then create a natural game experience for Krukow and Kuiper, which will translate to a seamless broadcast.

“It’s something that hasn’t been done before, but we’re really looking forward to being able to do 22 more games together,” Krukow said. “I’m only losing six games from what I did last year, and that to me is enormous. I don’t want to have to quit. To me, this was a gift. I’m ecstatic about it.”

“I think it’ll take two or three innings to get used to the dynamics of him not being there, but we’ve done so many games for so long that I think it’s going to be an easy transition, I really do,” Kuiper said.

2020 marks Krukow’s 30th season in the television booth and his 26th full season on the radio side. A 14-time Emmy award winner, Krukow was one of eight finalists for the 2017 Ford C. Frick Award for baseball broadcasting excellence. He was named California’s 2015 and 2017 Sportscaster of the Year, as selected by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association. A former big-league pitcher, Krukow played 14 seasons at the Major League level.

About San Francisco Giants

One of the oldest teams in Major League Baseball, the 138-year old franchise moved to San Francisco from New York in 1958.  After playing a total of 42 years in Seals Stadium and Candlestick Park, the team moved to the privately constructed, downtown ballpark on the corner of 3rd and King.  2020 marks the Giants 20th year at Oracle Park and 21st season playing on the shores of McCovey Cove.  The organization is widely recognized for its innovative business practices and baseball excellence.  In 2010, the franchise was named the Sports Organization of the Year by Street & Smith’s Sports Business Journal and in 2012 was named Organization of the Year by Baseball America.  Oracle Park is also the only ballpark in the country to have earned Silver, Gold and Platinum LEED certification for an existing building.

Since opening its gates, Oracle Park has become internationally-renowned as a premier venue in the world of both sports and entertainment.  On the diamond, more than 61 million spectators have witnessed a number of magical moments, including three World Series Championships (2010, 2012 & 2014), the raising of four National League Pennants and seven playoff appearances.  On June 13, 2012, the organization’s first-ever Perfect Game was thrown by Giants ace Matt Cain.  On July 10, 2007, San Francisco was the center of the baseball universe when it hosted the 78th Major League Baseball All-Star Game.  The ballpark has played host to some of music’s biggest acts, including Lady Gaga, Beyoncé & Jay Z, Ed Sheeran, the Rolling Stones, the Eagles, Bruce Springsteen and the E-Street Band, Green Day and Billy Joel.  It also was the site of the 2018 Rugby World Cup Sevens.

Off the field, the Giants have one of the premier community outreach programs in professional sports.  Through its community outreach programs, the Giants and the Giants Community Fund work with corporate and non-profit partners to raise awareness, educate and generate interest in a variety of issues important to both their fans and community including education/literacy, violence prevention, health and youth recreation and fitness.
