November 21, 2023 By admin

Shiffrin, the Winningest Skier in FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup History, Can Tie Record for Most Career World Cup Overall Titles This Season

Live Competition Coverage of Women’s Giant Slalom Begins Saturday, Nov. 25, at 1 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock

1998 Nagano Olympic Super-G Champion Picabo Street to Serve as Analyst

NBC Sports’ 2023-24 Schedule to Include U.S. and Austrian Events – Including the World-Famous Hahnenkamm in Kitzbühel – Across NBC, Peacock, and CNBC

STAMFORD, Conn. – Nov. 21, 2023 – Mikaela Shiffrin, the winningest skier in FIS Alpine Ski World Cup history, headlines NBC Sports’ coverage of the Stifel Killington Cup, a FIS Alpine Ski World Cup event, from Killington, Vt., beginning this Saturday, Nov. 25, at 1 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock. Shiffrin has won five Killington Cup slaloms, more than any other skier. Killington is the first of 10 U.S.-based winter sports events along with six Austria-based alpine skiing events presented by NBC Sports.

Shiffrin is coming off a historic 2022-23 season that not only saw the two-time Olympic champion break Ingemar Stenmark’s record for all-time World Cup wins with 86, but also went on to reset the record to 88 and capture her fifth overall World Cup title, as well as the giant slalom and slalom season titles. With a sixth overall World Cup title this season, Shiffrin would tie Annemarie Moser-Pröll’s (Austria) all-time record.

Additionally, if Shiffrin matches her win total from last year (14), she will eclipse 100 World Cup victories for her career – a Winter Olympic sport accomplishment that has only been done by Norwegian cross-country skier Marit Bjørgen (114).

Shiffrin leads an impressive crew of U.S. Olympians expected to compete in Killington this week, including 2023 world team champion Paula Moltzan, who was an NCAA champion while attending the University of Vermont in Burlington. Shiffrin has also spent time in Vermont, attending Burke Mountain Academy in East Burke, graduating from the high school in 2013.

Steve Schlanger will handle play-by-play alongside 1998 Nagano Olympic super-G champion Picabo Street and former U.S. Ski Team member Steve Porino. Heather Cox will serve as an on-site reporter.

NBC Sports’ 2023-24 FIS Alpine Ski World Cup schedule spans two continents and three U.S. states and is highlighted by the prestigious Hahnenkamm race in Kitzbühel, Switzerland on Jan. 19-21. One of the oldest ski races in the world, the Hahnenkamm is also one of the most challenging. Home to the world-famous Streif course, it includes a 3,000-foot drop and sees skiers regularly top speeds of over 90 miles per hour. Daron Rahlves is the only American to ever win the Hahnenkamm World Cup downhill (2003).

Additionally, NBC Sports will present an elite lineup of domestic World Cups, including Beaver Creek, Colo. (Dec. 1-3), Palisades Tahoe, Calif. (Feb. 24-25), and Aspen, Colo., (March 2-3). A full schedule featuring FIS Alpine Ski World Cup and U.S. Ski & Snowboard events is below.

STAMFORD, Conn. – March 14, 2023 – Two-time Olympic gold medalist Mikaela Shiffrin, the newly minted record holder for all-time FIS World Cup victories, headlines NBC Sports’ coverage of the 2022-23 FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup Finals, presented by Stifel, from Soldeu, Andorra, this Wednesday-Sunday. NBC Sports’ live coverage, which totals 14 hours throughout the week and exclusively covers women’s races, begins tomorrow with the women’s downhill at 6:30 a.m. ET on Peacock. In addition to the downhill, coverage will include the women’s super-G, slalom, giant slalom, and team parallel.

Last week, Shiffrin tied and then surpassed two-time Olympic champion Ingemar Stenmark to become the all-time record holder for career FIS World Cup victories, winning her record-breaking 87th race in Are, Sweden, on March 11. Shiffrin currently has an insurmountable 1,003-point lead in the overall points standings over rival Petra Vlhova (Slovakia) and has already clinched her fifth career Crystal Globe, breaking a tie with Lindsey Vonn for most Crystal Globes won by an American skier. She has also clinched the World Cup season titles in slalom and giant slalom.

Shiffrin, who has 136 career World Cup podium finishes, is one podium finish away from tying Vonn’s all-time women’s record. With a victory on Sunday in the giant slalom, Shiffrin would also break the single-season and career records for most women’s giant slalom World Cup wins. She currently has six giant slalom World Cup wins this season (tied with Vreni Schneider and Sonja Nef for the most) and 20 in her career (tied with Schneider for the most).

Shiffrin will be joined by U.S. Ski teammate and 2023 team world champion Paula Moltzan in Soldeu. On the international side, 2022 Beijing Olympic super-G champion Lara Gut-Behrami (Switzerland), five-time Olympic medalist Wendy Holdener (Switzerland), and three-time Olympic medalist Federica Brignone (Italy) are all expected to compete.

Steve Schlanger will handle play-by-play alongside former Stifel U.S. Alpine Ski Team member Steve Porino. All races this weekend will also be streaming live and on demand on SkiAndSnowboard.Live.

Peacock will present live coverage of Shiffrin’s chase to tie and possibly break the record this weekend with two races at the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup event, presented by Stifel, in Åre, Sweden. In addition to her World Cup chase, last month Shiffrin won the gold medal in giant slalom and silver medals in super-G and slalom at the 2023 World Championships in Méribel, France, bringing her total individual medal count at World Championships to 14, the most by a man or woman in the modern era.

STAMFORD, Conn. – Feb. 2, 2023 – Two-time Olympic champion Mikaela Shiffrin, who recently became the all-time women’s and U.S. record holder for career alpine skiing FIS World Cup victories, headlines NBC Sports’ live coverage of the 2023 FIS World Alpine Skiing Championships – featuring every race live on Peacock and SkiAndSnowboard.Live – beginning Monday, Feb. 6, from Meribel in the French Alps. Last week, Shiffrin broke a tie with three-time Olympic medalist and U.S. skier Lindsey Vonn to become the all-time women’s and U.S. record holder for career victories with 83. Since then, Shiffrin has won two more races (85), clinching her record seventh season-long slalom title and moving within one victory of tying Ingemar Stenmark’s all-time record of 86 career wins – a record that has stood since 1989. Shiffrin has 11 World Championship medals and is currently tied for second on the all-time women’s list. With four medals at this year’s championship, she would tie Christl Cranz’s all-time record of 15.

Other notable American skiers expected to compete at this championship event include 2022 Beijing Super-G silver medalist Ryan Cochran-Siegle, two-time Olympian Travis Ganong, 2022 Beijing Olympian Paula Moltzan, and 2018 PyeongChang Olympian Breezy Johnson. The U.S. is coming off a four-medal performance that saw them place fifth overall at the 2021 edition of this competition in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy.
