Following are highlights from tonight’s primetime coverage of the Tokyo Olympics on the networks of NBCUniversal:

TRACK & FIELD – NBC

Ato Boldon on Canada’s Andre de Grasse winning gold in the men’s 200m final: “O Canada, indeed! … Andre de Grasse has paid his dues, up until this point all of his world championship and Olympic medals are silver and bronze, but he gets it done in Tokyo tonight with a gold…He had to work for it. The Americans came to get him, but de Grasse was enough tonight.”

Sanya Richards-Ross on de Grasse: “If you’ve been following this young man’s career, you’d be really happy for him right now…He finally gets to stand on top of the podium.”

Richards-Ross on Noah Lyles winning bronze in the men’s 200m final: “All credit to Noah Lyles, who is not known for running well on the turn, and he came off and gave himself a fighting chance, but de Grasse was able to really stay focused.”

Richards-Ross on Allyson Felix qualifying for the women’s 400m final: “Always clutch…If Allyson Felix is in a final, you watch out. She has the most experience, she knows how to win.”

Boldon on Jamaica’s Hansle Parchment winning gold in the men’s 110m hurdles final: “From bronze nine years ago to gold, and in one of the biggest upsets that we have had in this stadium, Hansel Parchment hands Grant Holloway his first defeat of the year and it’s in the Olympic final.”

Boldon on Grant Holloway winning silver in the men’s 110m hurdles: “He seemed to be getting too close to barriers in the middle and the end of his race was not what he wanted. That’s a shock.”

Boldon on Team USA failing to qualify in the men’s 4x100m relay: “Guess what? You can’t blame the passes now. The legs just weren’t special. Everybody passed the baton, and nobody was creating any real making up of the gaps…They just got outrun here. This is a huge shock.”

Leigh Diffey: “This is a shock. A massive shock.”

Boldon: “The Olympic woes continue. No medals since 2004, no wins since 2000, and now it looks like they’re not going to be in the final.”

Boldon on Kenya’s Emmanuel Korir and Ferguson Rotich finishing first and second in the men’s 800m final: “It’s interesting to see that Kenya has sort of loosened their grip on the steeplechase, but this is the event that they’re now starting to own…Four (gold medals) in a row now. They’re starting to own this event.”

Paul Swangard on Ryan Crouser winning the gold medal with an Olympic record throw in the men’s shot put: “That’s like taking a bowling ball, going to the free throw line, turning around and trying to throw a three-quarters shot the other direction. It’s impressive athleticism and strength.”

***

BEACH VOLLEYBALL – NBC

Chris Marlowe on April Ross and Alix Klineman defeating Switzerland in the semifinals: “The A-Team is moving on, and you would have to say, an A+ performance today for the United States. Somewhere, Mr. T is giving them high grades.”

Wong on Ross and Klineman: “The U.S.’ offense is just unstoppable…(April Ross), this is the sharpest she’s looked all Olympics long. Early in the Olympics, you can go two days, three days without playing a match, but as we get further along, you’re playing every single day and we’re seeing much more rhythm from Team USA.”

Following are highlights from tonight’s primetime coverage of the Tokyo Olympics on the networks of NBCUniversal:

GYMNASTICS – NBC

Tim Daggett on Simone Biles’ winning bronze in the balance beam: “As soon as I saw her today, I had absolutely no doubts that we would see what we typically see from this young woman…She doesn’t just do a double pike, she soars.”

Nastia Liukin on Biles competing in the balance beam: “She has nothing left to prove to anyone but herself, but once again, final standings, medals, or medal counts will never define the legacy that Simone Biles has already created. On and off the competition floor, she is the epitome of what the next generation of role models should be.”

Liukin on Biles: “It is not even necessarily what happens on this beam routine, it is the fact that she feels confident, she feels safe.”

Biles to Andrea Joyce on winning bronze: “I’ve been through so much this whole week and this past five years, so to come away with a medal when I didn’t think I was even going to get cleared to compete means a lot, and the outpouring of support means the world to me.”

Biles to Tirico on competing in the balance beam: “I just felt like I wanted to do this for me. I really wasn’t medically cleared to do the other events that I had qualified into, so tonight I just wanted to get out there have fun, do my beam routine and then just see what happens.”

Biles to Tirico on the difficulty of being expected to win: “It’s hard, but it’s harder being a female athlete because, you know, everybody prays for your downfall and wants you to mess up and all of that stuff. I don’t think they take into consideration of our mental state…because at the end of the day, we’re not just athletes or entertainment. We’re humans too and we have emotions and feelings and things that we’re working through behind the scenes that we don’t tell you guys about, and so I just think it’s something that people should be more aware of.”

Biles to Tirico on what she’s taking away from her experience in Tokyo: “Put your mental health first, it doesn’t matter if you’re on the biggest stage. That’s more important than any other medal you could win.”

Terry Gannon on Brody Malone finishing fourth in the men’s horizontal bar: “Brody Malone is just getting started. He may be a star in Paris.”

TRACK & FIELD – NBC

Sanya Richards-Ross on Sydney McLaughlin winning gold in the women’s 400m hurdles final: “There’s no more talk about the promise of the young superstar. The dream has been realized. Sydney McLaughlin, Olympic champion and world record holder! Breathtaking performance.”

Ato Boldon on the women’s 400m hurdles: “Dalilah Muhammad I thought ran the best race should could possibly given all she’s come back from, but sort of like Athing Mu, (McLaughlin) has so much flat speed in reserve that she was able to pull on that speed and get past the defending champ…These two are starting to separate themselves from everybody else on the planet now.”

Richards-Ross on McLaughlin setting a new world record: “Iron sharpens iron. This record does not fall without Dalilah Muhammad going for broke out of Lane 7. But what I admire so much is the patience and the poise of the youngster…she’s never been in this position before, but she was able to run her best race, the best race we’ve ever seen at 400m hurdles for women.”

Boldon on Athing Mu winning gold in the women’s 800m final: “She’s shrugged off youth and inexperience, and delivered a virtuoso performance. I think it’s safe to say the United States is not going to wait 53 more years for another gold medal. Athing Mu of Trenton, New Jersey, has arrived and there’s so much more to come from the new 800m queen.”

Richards-Ross: “This is what dreams are made of…Athing Mu – you are a thing of beauty. You are an Olympic champion at 19 years old.”

Richards-Ross on Noah Lyles in warmups: “He still talks about how the pressure sometimes feels heavy, but what we like to see is this Noah Lyles. He’s having fun in the back. He’s having fun on the track and when he does that, he runs light and he runs fast.”

Boldon on Noah Lyles finishing third in the 200m semifinal: “Noah Lyles knows better. You can get off the gas, sure, but you cannot get off the gas if two people are catching you like this.”

Richards-Ross on Gabby Thomas winning bronze in the women’s 200m final: “From Harvard to a bronze medal at the Olympic Games, and she ran the race of a lifetime. She wasn’t looking this good through the rounds.”

Boldon on Elaine Thompson-Herah winning gold in the women’s 200m and the historic double-double: “This is one of the best 200m turns I’ve ever seen…what she just did is to put herself in very remarkable company. She’s the only woman to win the 100m and 200m in back-to-back Olympic Games.”

Richards-Ross on 17-year-old Erriyon Knighton qualifying for the final in the men’s 200m: “You know who he just looked like? Usain Bolt…He looked like a young Usain Bolt. He controlled, dominated the final 100m of this race.”

Boldon on Knighton: “I think you’re right…the only thing Usain would not have done was spot them this much distance. But the young kid not looking like somebody in his Olympic debut. The thing is though. if he’s going to be on the medal podium, you cannot spot anybody in the final that much space.”

Boldon on Grant Holloway winning his men’s 110m hurdles semifinal heat: “The ones who are going to be on the podium go through their rounds looking like that. There was nobody in the frame. As confident as ever, and making these rounds look effortless.”

Boldon on Devon Allen qualifying for the men’s 110m hurdles: “When the U.S. failed to medal in Rio, I knew it would not last…and the way Devon Allen looks, the U.S. may be looking at multiple medals in the final.”

Following are highlights from tonight’s primetime coverage of the Tokyo Olympics on the networks of NBCUniversal:

GYMNASTICS – NBC

Terry Gannon on Jade Carey’s gold medal-winning floor routine: “From Arizona to Tokyo, they applaud and hug for Jade Carey!”

Tim Daggett on Carey: “That was fabulous, incredible. She’s so powerful…After all that tumbling you are exhausted if you’re normal, but she’s not – she’s superhuman.”

Nastia Liukin on Carey’s routine: “What a great moment for Jade right there…That is the best that she could possibly have done. Huge hug from Dad, of course. These are the moments that you will remember…Every single thing that she does, it is flawless.”

Liukin on Carey sharing the moment with her father and coach, Brian: “There’s no words to describe this feeling right here when the final scores come up. Olympic champion for the rest of your life, and you get to share that moment with your dad.”

Daggett on Carey’s performance in yesterday’s vault: “Talk about the range of emotions. Yesterday was devastating, and today, exuberant.”

Carey to Andrea Joyce on what the gold medal means to her: “This means everything to me. It’s all I ever worked for and dreamed of and I’m just very proud that it happened tonight.…I’m just going to remember everything that I went through and how I never gave up and just pushed through to the very end.”

Liukin on Simone Biles competing in tomorrow’s balance beam event and the twisties: “I think probably about 90% of all gymnasts have experienced (the twisties). When you just bring it up amongst any gymnast, it’s almost like you want to walk away from it because it’s quite scary not being able to be in sync with your mind and your body…Not only is it scary, but it’s also dangerous. ”

Daggett on Biles: “As for balance beam tomorrow night, I don’t think she’ll have any problem with the bulk of the routine. Where she might run into an issue is on the dismount.”

***

TRACK & FIELD – NBC

Leigh Diffey on Allyson Felix in the women’s 400m heats: “Watching her on this comeback…this is unquestionably Allyson Felix’s crowning moment and she has another chance to create even more track history. Really special Games, these ones.”

Ato Boldon on Felix: “Her first Olympics was 2004, she came straight out of high school…Most prodigies in this sport don’t go all the way, so Allyson Felix is the exception by being here in her fifth Olympic Games.”

Sanya Richards-Ross on Felix winning her 400m heat: “Allyson has so much experience on Olympic tracks. She was completely in control…Her stride looks long and comfortable, and Allyson looks really good. (Felix’s daughter) Camryn, get excited. Mommy’s looking good.”

Boldon on the 400m qualifying heats: “The ones who eventually end up on the podium are the ones who in the early rounds control the race, usually from the front. Allyson Felix had that really strong second 100 meters to get the distance that she’d need to hold the lead late, and that’s what you’re looking for.”

Richards-Ross on Noah Lyles qualifying for the men’s 200m semifinals: “He looked good. He got out hard, got very relaxed, and looked comfortable…He looked like the world champion on the track.”

Boldon on Lyles: “When Noah Lyles is fluid in his movement, like he is (in this race), he is very hard to beat.”

Boldon on Sydney McLaughlin and Dalilah Muhammad qualifying for the women’s 400m final: “It’s just interesting how much better Sydney McLaughlin and Dalilah Muhammad are than everybody else in the world. ”

Richards-Ross on the women’s 400m final: “The matchup between Sydney and Dalilah in the final is going to be another electric matchup. We might be on world record watch again with these two women, I cannot wait.”

Boldon on Dalilah Muhammad finishing first in the women’s 400m hurdles semifinal: “There’s not too much that you can say other than perfection in how you run an Olympic semifinal, that’s why she’s the defending champion.”

Diffey on Karsten Warholm’s world record in the 400m hurdles: “The world has never seen a run like that before in 400m men’s hurdles! Incredible!”

Boldon on Warholm and silver medalist Rai Benjamin: “He has taken this event somewhere that we didn’t think it would be for decades. Under 46 seconds flat. Are you kidding me? …  Here’s the best part of what we just saw: these two are just 24  and 25 years of age. We are going to see more records int his event.”

Richards-Ross: “We are so fortunate. We are witnessing sweet, sweet history. These two men went to bed last night and knew what the world expected and they did not disappoint. They are champions but we are winners too. What we just saw, we may never see again. That was as fast as men run in the open 400m with no hurdles!”

***

BEACH VOLLEYBALL – NBC

Kevin Wong on April Ross’ performance in the quarterfinal win vs. Germany: “It’s about April Ross raising her game to what’s needed. It hasn’t been a big storyline in Tokyo, they’ve been breezing through, but in this situation, she’s upped her service pressure.”

Wong on Alix Klineman: “It’s mind boggling how much her game has transitioned. That looks like a young Kerri Walsh-Jennings patrolling off the net…The big presence – she’s starting to take more space, she’s starting to take a bit longer. The evolution of Alix Klineman’s beach volleyball game.”

NEW OLYMPIC SPECIAL “SPORTS & MENTAL HEALTH: A CONVERSATION WITH MICHAEL PHELPS” STREAMING NOW ON PEACOCK, NBCOLYMPICS.COM AND NBC SPORTS APP

August 2, 2021 By admin

PHELPS SPEAKS TO MIKE TIRICO:

“Simone and I are the best in the world at what we do, but how many other millions of people are out there going through the same exact thing.”

“As soon as I opened up, it was the greatest feeling in the world, a hundred-pound weight lifted off my back.”

“People are standing up and talking about it left and right and that’s what we need. We need more of that because I think, if we can do that, then we can break down this wall. The stigma can be gone, relieved, finished.”

TOKYO, JAPAN – Aug. 2, 2021 – Michael Phelps, the greatest Olympian of all time, spoke with NBC Olympics primetime host Mike Tirico about athlete mental health in a new special Sports & Mental Health: A Conversation with Michael Phelps that is streaming now across Peacock, NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports app.

During the interview, Phelps, who has won more total Olympic medals (28) and gold medals (23) than anyone in history, discussed Simone Biles, the pressure on Olympians, his own mental health struggles, and helping others.

Following are highlights of the interview. If used, please note the mandatory credit: “In an exclusive NBC Olympics interview…”

On the impact of Simone Biles’ recent mental health struggles: “Maybe we’ll see change. Maybe we’ll actually be able to help athletes. One of the things I’ve been frustrated about is the lack of change and lack of support we have for mental health both during competition and post-competition.”

On the impact of the pandemic: “My concern is, how many athletes are we going to lose? We already lost a handful to suicide. How many more can we lose? It breaks my heart. I’m one that knows exactly what that feels like. I know what it feels like to not want to be alive, and the ups and the downs and roller coasters that everyone’s gone through over the last two years, I’m afraid. I’m afraid for everybody else.”

On that it’s like to be on top yet alone: “Dark. Scary…I had one kind of moment here (in Tokyo) where I just spun a little bit. For me, it can happen whenever it wants. I can wake up one day and feel like a million bucks, and the next day I can wake up and feel like all I want to do is curl up into a ball and go into a black hole. That’s my life. I’m a human being. I experience emotions just like everyone else does.”

On what athletes struggling with mental health need: “We need support. We need to be able to find a safe place…I think the biggest thing is understanding it and accepting it…I feel like I’m alone sometimes, like I’m the only one that can ever go through something like this, but it’s not the case. There are millions of people that are going through the same exact thing that I do or the same exact thing that Simone is going through. The same exact thing as Naomi Osaka, Kevin Love, all of these athletes. People are standing up and talking about it left and right and that’s what we need. We need more of that because I think, if we can do that, then we can break down this wall. The stigma can be gone, relieved, finished.”

On opening up about his own mental health struggles: “I guess I was afraid to open up because I’m not supposed to show that vulnerability that weakness. If I show that side, then I’m giving my competitors something extra. No, I don’t want to do that…As soon as I opened up, it was the greatest feeling in the world, a hundred-pound weight lifted off my back.”

On personally helping other athletes: “I can’t say enough. I enjoy it. I love it. I thrive on it because I get to help somebody, but in turn it helps me, too. It comes back 100%.”

On helping young athletes: “There’s two things you can say: it’s okay to not be okay and be you.”

On advice: “That’s something I will say to every human being – communicate, communicate, communicate. Find a safe space…Control what you can control. If you’re going through a bad day, reach out for help…Simone and I are the best in the world at what we do, but how many other millions of people are out there going through the same exact thing. I hope they’re watching right now…This is real. Reach out for help. Know you’re not alone. Know it’s okay to not be okay. 100%.”

Phelps competed in five Olympic Games from 2000-16 and holds the world record in the 400m individual medley. He is also featured in two Peacock Original specials, Michael Phelps: Medals, Memories & More and The Greatest Race. For more information, click here. Stream the interview Sports & Mental Health: A Conversation with Michael Phelps on Peacock now here.

In 2008, he established the Michael Phelps Foundation to promote healthy, active lives, especially for children, primarily by expanding the opportunities for participation in the sport of swimming.

Tirico opening Sunday’s NBC Olympic primetime show from the streets of Tokyo: “Protocols are still in place…I’ve been here three weeks, tested many times, so we are allowed out of the Olympic bubble and into the city. Following are highlights from tonight’s primetime coverage of the Tokyo Olympics on the networks of NBCUniversal:

GYMNASTICS – NBC

Nastia Liukin on Suni Lee winning bronze in the uneven bars: “Since winning that all-around gold medal, she has just been going from one thing to the other. It’s been an exhausting but rewarding, of  course, few days for Suni.”

Terry Gannon: “You can imagine the confidence that would add, but also all the distraction going in and then to having to keep competing.”

Liukin: “That, and the pressure as well. Now you’re coming back out to the competition floor, a few more eyes are on you as the reigning Olympic all-around champion.”

Liukin on MyKayla Skinner winning silver in the women’s vault: “Just the range of emotions that she has had here all week, could not be more thrilled for MyKayla Skinner to end her Olympics experience with an individual medal…She will remember this moment for the rest of her life.”

Skinner to Andrea Joyce: “This was seriously so unexpected. I was actually going to take a flight home after the team finals, so for me to be able to turn myself around and be able to finally compete one last time, was seriously so unreal…It’s just a dream come true.”

Liukin on Jade Carey in the vault: “It’s almost like she just got ahead of herself a little bit…It happens to every single gymnast, sometimes your steps are just off.”

***

TRACK & FIELD – NBC

Leigh Diffey on the men’s 100m final: “When you think about the Olympic Games and you think about the men’s 100m, of course naturally you think of Jamaica’s legend Usain Bolt…However, he’s in retirement. So that means it is wide open, and it has been the biggest question, the biggest discussion that we’ve experienced at these Games. The question begs, who’s going to win the 100m?”

Ato Boldon on Italy’s Lamont Marcell Jacobs winning gold in the men’s 100m final: “I can’t even say enough about what this young man here has just accomplished. Italy has no history of medals in this event…but this guy just set a European record. I told you before the gun, if you come to the final and you can find a way to run your best race ever, chances are you’re going to be at the top of the podium. What a complete and utter shock. Throw away all the form charts from all the months leading into this race.”

Tirico on the Italian TV call of Jacobs’ gold medal run: “Joy needs no translation.”

Diffey on Fred Kerley taking silver in the men’s 100m: “People said Kerley was crazy, leaving the 400m to come to the 100m. They’re not saying that anymore.”

Boldon on Trayvon Bromell failing to qualify for the men’s 100m final: “When he’s running well, he has a good start, great acceleration, separates from the field, and then he holds them off…He was fine at 50 meters, but I can see him laboring to get to the line.”

Boldon on Puerto Rico’s Jasmine Camacho-Quinn winning gold in the women’s 100m hurdles: “She has been the best hurdler in the world in 2021, nobody’s been close – but it’s one thing to win in the regular season. When all the pressure is on you, can you deliver? Jasmine Camacho-Quinn did.”

Boldon on the men’s 400m hurdles and USA’s Rai Benjamin and Norway’s Karsten Warholm qualifying for the final: “One thing is for sure: we are guaranteed – guaranteed – one of the best races ever in the history of the event when these two hook up in that final.”

Boldon on Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson-Herah qualifying in the 200m heat: “When you’re doubling at an Olympics, and for somebody like Elaine Thompson-Herah…who has a chance at not only Olympic gold, but the world record, she is going to be extremely conservative. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with her, she just knows, ‘Let me do as little as I have to to get to the next round.’ She’s done that.”

Sanya Richards-Ross on Jenna Prandini in the 200m heat: “I do think that she should get into the final and she does have a chance to finally get a medal. Jenna Prandini has shown us so much promise for so long…and really found her event here in the 200m…She has a really great shot.”

Boldon on the women’s 200m heats and semifinals field: “This 200m field and the way this whole thing is shaping up, we are getting ready to set some very, very fast times when the final comes around.”

***

SWIMMING – NBC

Caeleb Dressel to Tirico on what’s been the hardest part of this past year: “The amount of uncertainties, not just for myself, but for everybody. There’s been so many unknown variables while trying to keep your head about you, looking forward to an Olympic Games that you’re not sure is going to happen…some of the hardest training of your life, and you’re not sure if the light is going to be there at the end of the tunnel. So staying on track best you can, without being sure if it’s going to happen.”

Dressel on continuing the legacy of Team USA 100m freestyle champions: “Every event is a tough event to win at the Olympics, but I think every single go around the 100m free is the most wide-open one. It just fluctuates so much…It means a lot. That was actually one of the first things I heard after that race was Rowdy (Gaines) yelling, ‘Welcome to the club!’ It was loud, it was very, very loud…I’ve never really thought about that, but it is really good company…It’s really special and it’s incredible how this sport works.”

Dressel on competing in the next Summer Olympics in Paris in 2024: “That’s actually the first thing that popped into my head when I finished my meet was, ‘Oh no, I have to do this again in three years.’ ‘Oh no’ in the best way, though…I’m excited moving in three years from now, but we have World Championships between, so it’ll be a good go around. I’m excited.”

***

BEACH VOLLEYBALL – NBC

Kevin Wong on April Ross and Alix Klineman’s round of 16 victory over Cuba: “April’s looked nervous. You think about it, she’s one of the most decorated Olympians in our sport and yet she’s still nervous about a round of 16 play. The difference between pool play and  match play now in an elimination bracket is you go home now if you have a bad day.”

Wong on Ross: “She’s got diversity of offense. She’s got range and she’s got vision. That’s an unstoppable combination.”
