Boston Bruins-New York Rangers Rivalry Celebrated in 2013 Discover NHL Thanksgiving National Marketing Campaign

October 31, 2013 By admin

nhl-logoBobby Farrelly Directs Promotional Spots for New York Rangers-Boston Bruins Game on Friday, November 29 on NBC

Campaign Features Bruins Legend Cam Neely and Rangers Legend Mike Richter

Commercial Debuts Tonight During Wednesday Night Rivalry on NBCSN

NEW YORK – October 30, 2013 – NBC Sports Group, in partnership with the NHL (National Hockey League), enlisted Hollywood director Bobby Farrelly for its multi-platform marketing campaign to promote the 2013 NHL Thanksgiving Showdown featuring the Original Six match-up of the New York Rangers and Boston Bruins on Friday, November 29 at 1pm ET on NBC. The campaign, which includes three 30-second TV commercials and an extended version to run online, will debut during tonight’s Wednesday Night Rivalry broadcast, featuring the Bruins and the Penguins, at 8 p.m. ET. on NBCSN.

Farrelly, whose film credits include “There’s Something About Mary” and “Dumb and Dumber,” directed this year’s TV and digital campaign in which family relatives from Boston and New York carry their personal Bruins-Rangers rivalry to Thanksgiving dinner. The TV campaign was shot in Boston, and features NHL greats Cam Neely and Mike Richter.

“The goal is to celebrate the holiday, and the historic rivalry between the Bruins-Rangers,” said Bill Bergofin, Senior Vice President, Marketing , NBC Sports Group. “The campaign is a light hearted look at a typical Thanksgiving dinner, in the home of a passionate NHL family. Bobby Farrelly’s sense of humor and his love of the Boston Bruins, made him the perfect director for this project.”

“Getting into debates with extended family members during the holidays – especially among passionate sports fans – is an insight and truth about Thanksgiving that everyone can relate to,” said Brian Jennings, NHL Chief Marketing Officer. “Inserting the intensity of the Bruins-Rangers rivalry into the spirit of a family Thanksgiving was irresistible. And with Bobby Farrelly’s ties to Boston, his love of the Bruins and his track record as a director of hit comedies, he brought a lot to developing the concept and comedy.”

“I’m a hockey nut. So when the NHL and NBC approached me to direct the commercial and said it would feature Cam Neely and Mike Richter, I was flattered,” said Farrelly. “It was a pleasure to work with two hockey greats to promote a game featuring two legendary teams, including my beloved Bruins.”

Three 30-second TV spots, two 15-second commercials and a two-minute extended version will run across the broadcast, digital and social media platforms of the NHL, NHL Network, and NBC Sports Group.

The creative was developed collaboratively by the NHL and NBC Sports Group, in consultation with Farrelly and production company, Rabbit.

In additional promotion for this game, Neely, Richter and a to-be-announced musical performer will ride aboard the Discover/NHL 36 feet long by 20 feet wide “Frozen Fall Fun” float in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade® on Thursday, Nov. 28. The float also will feature a synthetic ice rink with kids skating, a 12 foot tall turkey that serves as a hockey goal, plus an assortment of colorful fall décor.

Jon Barry Named NBA on ESPN Radio Lead Analyst

October 31, 2013 By admin

espn-radioJon Barry Named NBA on ESPN Radio Lead Analyst; PJ Carlesimo and Stan Van Gundy to Call Select Games; Kevin Calabro and Marc Kestcher Provide Play-by-Play

Jon Barry, a 14-year NBA veteran, has reached a multi-year agreement to serve as the lead analyst for NBA on ESPN Radio. He will work more than 40 regular-season and playoff broadcasts. Kevin Calabro, who has called NBA games on ESPN Radio since 2008, returns as the play-by-play voice and will partner with Barry throughout the season. Barry, who joined ESPN prior to the 2006-07 season, will continue to provide analysis during ESPN game telecasts and for a variety of ESPN news and information studio shows.

Barry and Calabro will make their NBA on ESPN Radio debut on Opening Night, Tuesday, Oct. 29, at 8 p.m. ET with an Eastern Conference Semifinal rematch between the defending NBA Champion Miami Heat – led by LeBron James and Dwyane Wade – hosting the Chicago Bulls – with the returning Derrick Rose.

Barry said, “I am excited to expand my role with ESPN to include games on ESPN Radio. I know I can’t fill the shoes of Dr. Jack Ramsay, but I will do my best to inform and entertain our listeners.”

Dr. Jack Ramsay added, “For the past 18 seasons, it was my pleasure to call NBA games on ESPN Radio alongside the late, incomparable Hall of Fame broadcaster, dear friend Jim Durham.  I’ll always treasure our time together and the great games we were privileged to call. Now I look forward to listening to Kevin Calabro and Jon Barry – both outstanding broadcasters who know the game.”

Tim McCarthy, senior vice president, ESPN Audio play-by-play and talent planning, said, “As we enter ESPN Radio’s 19th season as the exclusive national broadcaster of the NBA, adding Jon Barry, with his NBA knowledge and pedigree, only solidifies our commitment to producing the best play- by play-content.  The team of Kevin Calabro and Jon Barry will be very compelling.”

Barry, known for his defense and ability to make clutch shots, played for several teams throughout his career including the Milwaukee Bucks, Atlanta Hawks, Los Angeles Lakers, Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings, Detroit Pistons, Denver Nuggets and most recently with the Houston Rockets.  He was a first-round pick by Milwaukee in 1992 out of Georgia Tech.

Jon is the son of Hall of Famer Rick Barry and brother of former NBA player Brent Barry.

PJ Carlesimo, who joined ESPN during the 2013 playoffs, will work select games throughout the regular- and post-season, partnering with Marc Kestecher, who joined ESPN Radio in 1999 and has been part of Radio’s Super Bowl, NFL, NBA, MLB, BCS, college football and college basketball coverage.

ESPN has also reached an agreement with veteran NBA head coach Stan Van Gundy to join ESPN Radio’s NBA coverage team. Van Gundy will serve as a game analyst for 10 broadcasts during the 2013-14 NBA regular season. In addition, Van Gundy will continue to serve as one of the rotating guest hosts on the Miami-based The Dan Le Batard Show – ESPN Radio’s new, national program – which he did when the show was a local show.

New Weekly Studio Program Inside MLB Starting Monday, November 11

Secaucus, N.J., October 31, 2013 – MLB Network today announced that World Series champion and award-winning baseball TV announcer Ron Darling has joined its roster of on-air talent as an offseason analyst. Darling will appear across MLB Network’s offseason studio programming, which begins Monday, November 4, and make his MLB Network debut live on MLB Tonight on November 4 at 6:00 p.m. ET.

Since beginning his broadcasting career in 2000, Darling has won two Emmy Awards for Best Sports Analyst for his work covering the Mets on SportsNet New York (SNY), and he works as a game analyst for Turner Sports’ MLB regular season and Postseason coverage. Over his 13-year pitching career, Darling collected 136 wins with a 3.87 ERA. He was named a National League All-Star in 1985 and won the World Series with the New York Mets the following year. Darling also won 17 games for the 1988 NL East champion Mets and was the first Mets pitcher to be awarded the Gold Glove Award in 1989. Darling began his MLB career with the Mets (1983-1991) and also spent time with the Montreal Expos (1991) and Oakland Athletics (1991-1995).

“Ron’s experience from his career on the field and his work on local and national baseball broadcasts give him a unique perspective that will be a great addition to our offseason programming,” said MLB Network President and CEO Tony Petitti.

Taking an in-depth look at the offseason’s news on free agents and managerial candidates, MLB Network will launch a one-hour weekly studio show called Inside MLB featuring MLB Network insiders Peter Gammons, Jon Heyman, Ken Rosenthal, Joel Sherman and Tom Verducci, hosted by Greg Amsinger and Paul Severino. Inside MLB premieres on Monday, November 11 at 10:00 p.m. ET following the announcement of the 2013 Rookie of the Year Award winners by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America live on MLB Network at 6:00 p.m. ET.

Starting Monday, MLB Network’s offseason lineup will feature Matt Vasgersian and Harold Reynolds returning to host Hot Stove, the only television morning show dedicated to baseball, along with Chris Rose and Kevin Millar hosting Intentional Talk  and the return of Clubhouse Confidential, hosted by Brian Kenny, airing weekdays. MLB Network’s signature studio show MLB Tonight will continue to provide the latest news and interviews around the league throughout the offseason.

Notes from TNT’s NBA Coverage – Tuesday, October 29, 2013

October 30, 2013 By admin

Nba-on-tntTNT’s NBA coverage continues Thursday, October 31, at 8 p.m. ET with doubleheader action featuring the New York Knicks @ Chicago Bulls followed by the Golden State Warriors @ Los Angeles Clippers at 10:30 p.m

****    ****    ****    ****

TNT NBA Tip-off presented by AutoTrader.com Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal and Kenny Smith (Live from New York City’s Flatiron Plaza)

Barkley on Heat forward LeBron James: “From the first day he stepped on an NBA court, he’s exceeded everyone’s expectations. He’s the only player that has ever come into the NBA completely ready. He’s been tremendous from day one.”

Barkley on the upcoming season: “There are eight legitimate teams that could come out of either conference.”

Smith on the wide-open race for the NBA Championship: “For the first time in five years, there are more than three teams that can win it all.”

Barkley on the Heat adding center Greg Oden: “He’s the most important piece because they get beat up down low. If he doesn’t make this team better, it’s going to be very hard for them to three-peat. They can’t beat big teams.”

Barkley on the Clippers: “If Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan have gotten better as basketball players, the Clippers are the favorite [in the West].”

O’Neal on his message to Sacramento’s DeMarcus Cousins: “I told him, ‘If you want to be the man, you have to start acting like a man and playing like a man.’ That was the first conversation I had with him. The second conversation I had with him, I told him to stop being so sensitive. I said, ‘When you become big time and get max numbers, you have to represent yourself as such.’”

Smith on the San Antonio Spurs: “I don’t think they’re going to play different than last year. People didn’t think they were that good last year at one point. They are going to play the same exact way. Tim Duncan is going to be the same as last year. He wasn’t high flying, he was efficient and persistent. He comes on in the playoffs and at the end of the season.”

Barkley on the New York Knicks: “Their defensive rebounding and bench are two weaknesses…they are the No. 5 or 6 team [in the Eastern Conference].”

Barkley on the top teams in the Eastern Conference: “There are four elite teams in the East. The Heat are the team to beat followed by Indiana, Brooklyn and Chicago. Those are the powerhouses.”

Smith on the Knicks needing to make a move early in the season: “The Knicks are a good team but they have to make some sort of acquisition to become great. They have to make something happen between now and February. I don’t think they can wait until February to make it happen with Carmelo [Anthony] becoming a free agent [at the end of the season].

O’Neal on New York’s Carmelo Anthony: “I need Carmelo to do more as far as getting his teammates involved. He needs to make his guys better.”

Barkley on the Pacers’ Paul George: “Paul George is the next big superstar in the NBA.”

****    ****    ****    ****

Chicago Bulls (95) at Miami Heat (107)

Marv Albert (play-by-play) and Steve Kerr (analyst) with David Aldridge (reporter)

Kerr on the Heat: “When they put their mind to it, they are so explosive [defensively] and so quick at every position.”

Kerr on Bulls guard Jimmy Butler: “Butler is going to have to make some adjustments as a two-guard. You’re asked to be a secondary playmaker from the two position. Butler has not done that and the Bulls need him to make some strides this year starting alongside Derrick Rose.”

Kerr on teams forcing the Heat to play big: “Indiana with Roy Hibbert and David West made Miami uncomfortable and forced them to play big. Brooklyn can do that this year as well. Chicago can’t force Miami to play big and that allows the Heat to stay in their comfort zone. As versatile as Chicago is defensively, they lack that versatility on the offensive end.”

****    ****    ****    ****

Sprint Halftime Report

Johnson, Barkley, O’Neal and Smith

Smith on the Bulls vs. Heat: “In order to beat the Miami Heat, you have to have strength, size and pound them inside. The Bulls aren’t able to do that.”

****    ****    ****    ****

Kerr on the Bulls’ Carlos Boozer: “Carlos Boozer is the only bright spot for Chicago tonight.”

Kerr on Bulls off-season acquisition Mike Dunleavy: “He’s going to be a really important factor for the Bulls this year.”

Kerr on the Bulls: “They don’t have their rhythm tonight but they’re doing what they always do…they keep fighting.”

****    ****    ****    ****

L.A. Clippers (103) at L.A. Lakers (116) Kevin Harlan (play-by-play), Reggie Miller (analyst) and Craig Sager (reporter)

Miller on the Clippers’ DeAndre Jordan: “He has the chance to be the defensive player of the year. He has the athleticism and the will.”

Miller on Kobe Bryant’s eventual return from injury: “In today’s game, Kobe is the most fundamentally sound player when you talk about mechanics…so his game won’t have to change too much [after returning from injury]. He’s always been a fantastic outside shooter. Will he have that explosiveness and get to the rim? If that’s not there, he can go back to his fundamentals; he’s still going to be a heck of a player.”

Miller on Lakers guard Nick Young: “One thing he can do is put the ball in the basket. But he comes from the same school as [Clippers guard] Jamal Crawford and he doesn’t know what that other end is when it comes to defense.”

****    ****    ****    ****

Sprint Halftime Report

Matt Winer, Grant Hill, Steve Smith and Chris Webber (Live from Turner Studios in Atlanta)

Hill on Clippers guard J.J. Redick: “J.J. Redick was a very underrated pick-up for [the Clippers]. He can really space the floor for Chris Paul and Blake Griffin.”

Smith on the Clippers’ DeAndre Jordan: “There aren’t as many celebrations after dunks. He’s come out and is taking it seriously, blocking shots and rebounding. He’s manning the paint.”

****    ****    ****    ****

Miller on the Clippers: “It’s time to compete if you’re the Clippers. The moment is now. They’ve got the talent and they went out and got arguably one of the top three NBA coaches [Doc Rivers]. Now is the time to compete for titles.”

Miller on Lakers reserve guard Jodie Meeks: “He’s been a saving grace for the Lakers with his ability to stretch the floor and knock down threes.

Miller on the Clippers vs. Lakers: “I’m shocked because the Clippers’ effort hasn’t been there all game.”

****    ****    ****    ****

Inside the NBA presented by Kia

Johnson, Barkley, O’Neal and Smith from New York City Winer, Hill, Smith and Webber from Atlanta

Barkley on LeBron James’ headband: “LeBron’s headband is so big, Spud Webb could use it as a shower curtain. It’s the biggest headband in the world.”

Hill on the Lakers defeating the Clippers: “It’s safe to say that this was the upset of the year.”

Smith on the Lakers: “The Lakers imposed their will. They got the Clippers to play small ball.”

Webber on the Lakers: “I don’t think they’ll make the playoffs this year but if Kobe comes back with 10-15 games left and they’re 10-15 games out…who knows what will happen.”

Hill on the Indiana Pacers: “For them, it’s NBA Finals or bust.”

Webber on new Pacers forward Luis Scola: “He’s the perfect teammate to have on a ‘hard hat’ team like [the Pacers].”
