August 30, 2012 By admin

Former Super Bowl-winner Amani Toomer and Radio Veterans Eytan Shander,

Dan Schwartzman and Kay Adams Added to Lineup

NEW YORK, NY, August 28, 2012 – Dial Global (NASDAQ: DIAL) and NBC Sports Radio today announced the hiring of four sportscasters to round out its roster in time for the network’s launch on Tuesday, September 4. Former NFL pro Amani Toomer and radio veterans Eytan Shander, Dan Schwartzman and Kay Adams are joining the team as show hosts and update announcers.

Amani Toomer and Eytan Shander will host Amani and Eytan on NBC Sports Radio in the 10pm-1am ET timeslot, Monday-Friday; The Dan Schwartzman Show will air live Tuesday-Saturday between 1am-5am ET; Kay Adams will anchor the NBC Sports Radio national updates between 5pm-10pm ET, Monday-Friday, and she will also be appearing regularly on the previously announced The Erik Kuselias Show, Monday-Friday between 7pm-10pm ET.

Amani Toomer spent 13 years as a wide receiver for the New York Giants, retiring as the team’s all-time leader in receptions and receiving yards and winning a Super Bowl in 2008. His post-playing career as a sportscaster includes being a regular contributor to NBC SportsTalk on NBC Sports Network, SiriusXM NFL Radio, and MSG’s Varsity’s coverage of Friday Night Football.

Eytan Shander was most recently a national host and update anchor on Mad Dog Radio on SiriusXM. He’s also hosted radio shows and anchored updates in Philadelphia at WIP and WPEN, WWTN Nashville as well as other stops. Eytan was also the locker room correspondent for the Tennessee Titans post-game show during his time in Nashville.

Dan Schwartzman spent years hosting weekdays in Philadelphia on WPEN as well as most recently with ESPN Radio New York, among other stops.

Kay Adams hosts SiriusXM’s The Fantasy Drive and Livin’ the Fantasy. She also served as in-game host for the St. Louis Cardinals for two years.

Chris Corcoran, Executive Vice President, General Manager adds, “We are collecting some excellent young talent who are ready for the big stage in their careers. Not only are we adding a second Super Bowl Champ to our roster who has been training for this big moment, but we’re selecting talent that will make a big impact on a national level for our affiliates and our advertisers.”

Rob Simmelkjaer, Senior Vice President, NBC Sports Ventures and International, said, “As we work to build what we hope will be a winning team in sports radio, what better way to succeed than with than with another Super Bowl champion? We are thrilled to have Amani on board.”

Toomer is the second NBC Sports Radio sportscaster to have won a Super Bowl. Dial Global and NBC Sports Radio previously announced that Rodney Harrison, the three-time All-Pro and two-time Super Bowl champion, will host a two-hour weekend NFL talk show titled Safety Blitz with Rodney Harrison to debut on the weekend of September 8.

Cardinals & Reds Featured on “Caught Looking” Thursday at 9pm ET on NBC Sports Network

August 30, 2012 By admin

Episode Features Three Game Series Between Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals

Preview Clip: http://www.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?topic_id=9991168&content_id=24306075

New York — August 29, 2012 — Caught Looking will air Thursday night at 9 p.m. ET on NBC Sports Network, and will feature a behind-the-scenes look at this past weekend’s series between the Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals, as both teams fight for a postseason berth.

Major League Baseball Productions embedded camera crews with both teams throughout the three-game series, providing a unique perspective on all the action between the lines as the Cardinals tried to close the gap between themselves and the National League Central Division leading Reds, while maintaining their grasp on one of the two NL Wild Card spots.

In addition to exclusive commentary from star players on both sides, the episode features compelling in-game audio throughout the series, highlighted by Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips, who wore a wireless microphone during Saturday’s game, in which he went 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 RBI in the Reds’ 8-2 win. The episode also features in-depth interviews with managers Dusty Baker and Mike Matheny, as well as Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright and Reds pitcher Bronson Arroyo.  Off the field, a camera crew walked to the ballpark with rookie of the year candidate Todd Frazier, while another crew tagged along for a cab ride with Cardinals center fielder Jon Jay.

Caught Looking, a new collaboration between Major League Baseball Productions and NBC Sports Group will follow two different teams each week, as the final eight weeks of the season unfolds. Each original episode will be one hour in length and will air on NBC Sports Network. Next week’s episode will feature this weekend’s series between the New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles.

On November 8, NBC Sports Network will air a special postseason episode of Caught Looking which will feature the two teams playing in the 2012 World Series.

This Week’s Sports Illustrated: NFL Preview Issue – Packers Over Broncos in Superbowl XLVII; The Crazy, Insane, Perfect Life of Rob Gronkowski

NFL Preview: Aaron Rodgers Will Lead the Packers Past Peyton Manning’s Broncos to Win Superbowl XLVII

Rob Gronkowski’s Crazy, Insane, Perfect Life

Detroit’s Dynamic Duo Look to Keep the Lions’ Success Going

6,000 Passing Yards in a Season Could Be Right Around the Corner

The Last American Badass: The 49ers’ Justin Smith

(NEW YORK – August 29, 2012) – Can senior NFL writer Peter King (@SI_PeterKing) correctly predict who plays in the Super Bowl for the second time in three years? King was on the money two seasons ago when he said the Packers and the Steelers would reach football’s promised land.  His prediction last year didn’t pan out, but after a three-week road trip through more than 20 training camps, King predicts the Packers will take down the Broncos 33–30 in Super Bowl XLVI. This year’s NFL Preview contains detailed scouting reports for each team, along with playoff and award predictions.

Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski appears on the cover of the Sept. 3 issue, on newsstands now. Gronkowski had a historic 2011 season, setting NFL touchdown (17) and yards receiving (1,327) records for tight ends. Senior writer Chris Ballard (@SI_ChrisBallard)got an exclusive look at Gronkowski’s highly social life. The All-Pro tight end is well known throughout New England for his joyous personality and love of a good time. Ballard spent time with the 23 year old at a young woman’s 21st birthday party, an appearance for which he was being paid five figures (page 54).

He tells Ballard, “People say, ‘He’s doing way too many things,’ but [I do them] because I got nothing to do. That’s why I hit up every charity event, why I hit up every party I’m invited to. If I’m just sitting at home, that’s not productive. That’s boring. I like going out, meeting new people, having a good time. I guess that’s why I’m all over the papers. I don’t have any girlfriends, no kids. Basically I work out two hours every single day, and then I have 12 hours to do whatever I want.”

Gronkowski enjoys life right now, and if he continues to improve on the field, he could end up being the best tight end in history.

2012 AWARDS

Most Valuable Player: Peyton Manning, QB Broncos
Offensive Player of the Year: Aaron Rodgers, QB Packers
Defensive Player of the Year: Brooks Reed, LB Texans
Coach of the Year: Romeo Crennel, Chiefs
Offensive Rookie of the Year: Andrew Luck, QB Colts
Defensive Rookie of the Year: Bruce Irvin, DE Seahawks
Comeback Player of the Year: Peyton Manning, QB Broncos

Executive of the Year: Rick Smith, G.M. Texans

MEGATRON AND MEGA-ARM – MICHAEL ROSENBERG (@Rosenberg_Mike)

After Peyton Manning left the Colts for Denver, Matthew Stafford did a little research. He looked up the NFL records Manning shares with receiver Marvin Harrison—953 passes completed from Manning to Harrison for 12,766 yards and 112 touchdowns—and, while impressed, saw that he and Lions receiver Calvin Johnson might someday rewrite the record books. Stafford said, “I remember thinking to myself, that’s a hell of a number. But there’s a chance” (page 40).

Stafford and Johnson have overcome enough suffering in Detroit—the team went 2-14 in Stafford’s first season and 0-16 in Johnson’s second—to make them value their chance at stardom. Last year Stafford bounced back from shoulder surgery and a broken forefinger on his passing hand to have one of the best seasons of any quarterback in the league, and Johnson has improved all aspects of his game, from blocking to route-running. But can they keep the Lions in contention year after year?

On the Tablets: A look at the top five QB-WR duos in history.

THE SKY’S THE LIMIT – PETER KING (@si_peterking)

The passing game has taken over in the NFL in recent years, so much so that senior writer Peter King wonders if there is a chance that a 6,000- yard-passing season is on the horizon. In 2005 two men threw for more than 4,000 yards. Last year three quarterbacks surpassed 5,000. Four of the top six passing-yardage seasons in history took place last year. There are many factors that have contributed to this surge including the rise of the no-huddle offense, the greater production that teams are getting from tight ends and the more frequent use of three-wide-receiver sets (page 32).

Regarding his no-huddle offense, Packers coach Mike McCarthy said, “I believe in attacking. I’m not trying to shorten the game when we run the no-huddle. I’m not trying to win by three, or win by making fewer mistakes. That’s not us.”

AMERICAN BADASS – JIM TROTTER (@si_jimtrotter)

San Francisco’s Justin Smith is everything a defensive football player should be. Smith is fast, relentless and as strong at the end of the game as he is at the beginning. Last season, at age 32, Smith played 91% of the Niners’ defensive snaps and was named All-Pro at both defensive end and defensive tackle. His workout regimen has become legendary, not because of the amount of weight or types of exercises he does, but because he never lets up. He inspires his teammates to work as hard as he does. San Francisco linebacker Aldon Smith calls Justin, “the last true American badass” (page 48).

Oakland Raiders quarterback Carson Palmer, who was teammates with Smith in Cincinnati from 2003 to ’07, says, “He was a great teammate, a phenomenal teammate. Wherever his place was in the locker room, whatever chair he was sitting in, guys would gravitate toward him. He was so funny and got along with guys from every background. Just a great dude. He was respected because he treated everyone the same and worked so hard.”

SORECARD: FINISHED – DAVID EPSTEIN (@SIDavidEpstein)

Late last week, Lance Armstrong finally gave up. Rather than take his chances in an arbitration hearing with the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, which had accused him of cheating his way to seven consecutive Tour de France titles, Armstrong is allowing his titles to be taken away (page 14).

With the USADA coming after him with “overwhelming” evidence of his past doping, and faced with a potential parade of ex-teammates testifying about injections and transfusions in hotel rooms and on team buses, he concluded  that getting on with his life was more important than defending one of the most extraordinary careers in sports.  The question remains, do you think Armstrong would have rolled over if he had won all those Tours clean? Do you think he would plead guilty to a crime he hadn’t committed, rather than fighting those charges to the death?

POINT AFTER: WAY OFFSIDES, FIVE-METER PENALTY – PHIL TAYLOR (@SI_PhilTaylor)

With the possible exception of Bond villains, no one is more eager to conquer the world than executives from professional sports leagues. So how is the NFL doing, as it might put it, “strengthening global brands”? According to senior writer Phil Taylor, not so well (page 150).

ESPN, MLB Reach Eight-Year Multiplatform Rights Extension

August 28, 2012 By admin

Expanded Package Includes Annual Wild Card Game as Part of New and Enhanced TV Content; Comprehensive Digital, Radio and International Rights

ESPN and Major League Baseball have reached an eight-year, multiplatform rights extension which will significantly enhance ESPN’s TV, digital, radio and International MLB rights. The agreement – effective 2014 through 2021 – was announced today by MLB Commissioner Allan H. Selig and ESPN President John Skipper.

The agreement is highlighted by the addition of an annual Wild Card game, the rights to produce a significant amount of additional MLB studio programming hours, 10 additional regular-season games, increased footage and highlights rights across platforms, increased ability to co-exist in local team markets and added content across digital platforms and WatchESPN. In addition, rights across ESPN Radio, ESPN International and ESPN Deportes will expand.

ESPN’s expanded MLB package will include the following additional rights:

  • The addition of an annual Wild Card game presented by Budweiser, which will alternate between AL and NL each year;
  • The rights to produce a significant amount of additional Baseball Tonight hours;
  • The rights to all regular-season tiebreaker games – if necessary;
  • In-progress highlights during SportsCenter on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNEWS;
  • 10 additional regular-season games per season, including four Pennant Chase games in late September and up to six Holiday games across Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day;
  • New and increased co-exist rights on Monday Night Baseball and Wednesday Night Baseball;
  • The rights to produce a new, daily baseball studio show.

The new deal will also include several enhancements to existing rights:

  • Increased rights for Sunday Night Baseball exclusive team appearances;
  • More selection flexibility throughout ESPN’s 25-game Sunday Night Baseball slate;
  • Increased highlight rights for ESPN websites and applications, additional digital rights for ESPN programs and increased interactive television rights;
  • Increased ESPN Radio rights, including the additional right to co-exist during two Saturday windows per team, per year;
  • All MLB-related television content, including games and studio shows, to be available on WatchESPN;
  • Continued State Farm Home Run Derby coverage during MLB All-Star, including renewed 3D Derby rights;
  • Renewal and expansion of International rights across territories, including Wild Card games and the rights to additional Baseball Tonight hours.

MLB Commissioner Allan H. Selig

“On behalf of Major League Baseball, I am thrilled that we will continue our long-standing relationship with ESPN far into the future.  The level of ESPN’s commitment to baseball – both financially and through its expanded content – is a testament to the strength of our game and its unprecedented popularity among our fans.  Through its various networks and other media platforms, ESPN offers baseball fans more avenues to experience the game than ever before, and we’re thankful for their continued support.”

ESPN President John Skipper:

“We’re thrilled to renew our long-standing agreement with Major League Baseball into the next decade. It’s a great property. The enormous scope of what we acquired will provide fans with more live baseball and more ways to access baseball content than ever before.”

The new agreement will guarantee a 30-plus year continuous relationship between ESPN and MLB – dating back to 1990 – which is one of the longest standing relationships between a network and a league.

College Football’s Top 25 Highest-Rated Markets: Birmingham, Oklahoma City & Columbus Top Three in 2011

August 28, 2012 By admin

Twelve-Year Analysis: Birmingham Highest-Rated in 11 Years; Knoxville & Columbus Second Highest-Rated Multiple Times; 12 Markets Finish in Top Five

As fans across the country prepare for the start of the 2012 college football season, ESPN examined the ratings for its game telecasts in the 56 metered markets from 2000 to 2011. The results show the Top 25 markets from 2011, how the markets compare to this year’s Top 25 teams and overall trends from the past 12 years.

Highlights from 2000-2011:
  • Top Two: Birmingham, Ala., and Columbus, Ohio, are the only markets to finish in the highest-rated spot as well as in the top five all 12 years:
  • Birmingham was the top-rated metered market every year except 2001 when Columbus knocked the Alabama city to second.
  • Columbus was the second highest-rated market in 2010, 2005, 2003 and 2000.
  • Six in Second: Six of the 56 markets have finished a season in the second highest-rated spot:
  • Knoxville, Tenn. in 2009, 2008, 2006, 2004 and 2002.
  • Columbus in 2011 (tied with Oklahoma City), 2010, 2005, 2003 and 2000 (tied with Nashville).
  • Birmingham in 2001, Nashville in 2000 (tied with Columbus), New Orleans in 2007 and Oklahoma City in 2011 (tied with Columbus).
  • Top Five Markets: Thirteen markets have been in the top five highest-rated at least once from 2000 to 2011.
  • Birmingham and Columbus are the only markets to go 12 for 12.
  • Atlanta and Greenville, S.C. each finished as a top five market for five years overall. Atlanta in 2011, 2005, 2002, 2001 and 2000 and Greenville in 2011, 2009, 2007, 2006 and 2005.
  • Knoxville was in the top five in eight years (2010, 2009, 2008, 2007, 2006, 2004, 2003 and 2002). The home city of the Tennessee Volunteers wasn’t a metered market in 2000 or 2001, and finished 10th in 2011, and sixth in 2005.
  • New Orleans finished in the top five seven times (2011, 2010, 2009, 2007, 2004, 2001 and 2000; metered markets ratings were not available for New Orleans in 2005).
  • Jacksonville was a top-five market in 2010, 2008, 2005, 2004, 2002 and 2001.
  • Oklahoma City finished among the top five four times (2011, 2009, 2008 and 2003).
  • The Tennessee market of Memphis and Nashville each finished in the top five twice. Memphis in 2003 and 2000 and Nashville in 2006 and 2000.
  • Four markets finished in the top five once: Louisville in 2006, Norfolk in 2003 and Orlando in 2000.
  • Solid Debuts: Knoxville and Greenville each debuted as a metered market in 2002 to impressive finishes. Knoxville finished the season in second while Greenville finished in 12th.
  • Select Company in Top 10: Birmingham, Columbus and Jacksonville are the only markets to be among the top 10 every year since 2000. Other markets have impressive streaks as well:
  • Knoxville has finished in the top 10 every year since 2002 when it was first metered.
  • Atlanta has been a top 10 market every year except 2003.
  • Greenville has been in the top 10 every year since 2004.

Highlights of 2011:
  • Oklahoma Markets: Oklahoma City and Tulsa, Oklahoma’s two metered markets, each reached their highest spot in 2011. Oklahoma City finished in second and Tulsa in seventh.
  • Partner Markets: Tulsa and Las Vegas finished 2011 among the top 10 for the first time, capturing seventh and ninth, respectively. The two markets also reached their previous highs together in 2009 when Tulsa was 11 and Las Vegas 13.
  • Cracking the Top Five: Atlanta finished 2011 as the fifth highest rated market (tied with New Orleans), the highest spot since 2005 (third).

Bob Costas Goes One-On-One With “Paterno” Author Joe Posnanski on the Next “Costas Tonight,” Wednesday, 9 p.m. ET on NBC Sports Network

August 28, 2012 By admin

90-Minute Show Includes Costas’ Full November 2011 interview with Jerry Sandusky from Rock Center with Brian Williams with Never-Before-Seen Footage from 10-10:30 p.m. ET

“Costas Tonight” Originates from Studio 8G at 30 Rock and Airs Wednesday, August 29, at 9 p.m. ET on NBC Sports Network

EXCERPTS FROM COSTAS/POSNANSKI INTERVIEW BELOW

“I believe that Joe Paterno should have done more. I’ve told him that to his face directly. I said ‘you’re Joe Paterno. You’re just expected to do more.’ I don’t believe he was involved in a cover up. I don’t believe that he did this to protect his legacy. I understand that others do.” – Posnanski

“I have no qualms with the Louis Freeh report, he had his goals and his role in this thing…but I believe the report is very incomplete.” – Posnanski on Louis Freeh Report

“What I come away with is what a complicated life it was and what a big life it was.” – Posnanski on Paterno’s life

“That’s not the story, that’s not the book. I wasn’t going to write THAT book. Somebody else can if they want. I wrote the honest book, the book that I believe is true.” – Posnanski answering his critics that he wasn’t hard enough on Paterno

NEW YORK – August 28, 2012 – Paterno author Joe Posnanski, who spent months in State College, Pa., both before and after the Penn State scandal writing his book on the school’s former head coach, will join Bob Costas, a 23-time Emmy Award-winning journalist and one of America’s preeminent interviewers, on the latest edition of Costas Tonight, a 90-minute program, to air tomorrow night, at 9 p.m. ET on NBC Sports Network.

Following Costas’ one-on-one with Posnanski, Costas Tonight will feature the entire interview – including never-before-seen footage – that Costas conducted with convicted child molester Jerry Sandusky. That interview aired exclusively on Rock Center with Brian Williams on November 14, 2011.

Posnanski, an eyewitness to history, spent months embedded within Penn State to write Paterno, and had unprecedented access to the head coach before, and then after the scandal broke at the school.

About Costas Tonight:

Costas Tonight builds on Costas’ long and storied career as an interviewer from Later with Bob Costas and Costas Coast-to-Coast to his acclaimed HBO programs, On the Record and CostasNOW. Costas Tonight originates from Studio 8G at 30 Rockefeller Plaza.

EXCERPTS FROM COSTAS’ INTERVIEW WITH POSNANSKI:

Costas: “You had to have an opinion. You were closer to this than most of us. Do you believe that Joe Paterno was a principled man, not perfect – flawed – but a generally principled man, who in his old age and his inattention simply neglected what he should have done, which is still a pretty serious charge? Or do you believe the more serious charge, much more serious charge, as leveled by Louis Freeh, which is that he, along with others, but he is the major figure, that he knew essentially what was going on and he actively and knowingly covered it up?”

Posnanski: “You know my own personal opinion, which I will share with you, is not as important as the reader’s.”

Costas: “Is that a dodge, though?”

Posnanski: “I’m not going to dodge because I will answer it. But I think it’s really important, if I say what I think, that does influence…I wrote in the book and I believe that Joe Paterno should have done more. I’ve told him that to his face directly. I said ‘You’re Joe Paterno. You’re just expected to do more.’ I don’t believe he was involved in a cover up. I don’t believe that he did this to protect his legacy. I understand that others do. I’ve read the Louis Freeh report several times. I know what’s in it. I think its missing things. I think there were a lot of people he didn’t talk to. I also believe that this is such an emotional topic that if people look at the facts that I presented, they can absolutely go to that conclusion.”

Costas: “Without getting bogged down in the particulars, this is the essence of Louis Freeh, former FBI director‘s report. The conclusion: In order to avoid the consequences of bad publicity, Paterno, among others, but again Paterno is the figure that the public gravitates toward here, repeatedly concealed critical facts relating to Sandusky’s child abuse from authorities, the university’s trustees, the Penn State community and the public. If that is true, as Freeh concluded, it is indefensible.”

Posnanski: “Absolutely”

Costas: “You don’t believe that though.”

Posnanski: “I don’t believe that, no. I honestly don’t. I honestly believe that what Louis Freeh did, and I have no qualms with the Louis Freeh report, he had his goals and his role in this thing.”

Costas: “Well if you don’t think that’s true, you must have qualms with his report.”

Posnanski: “He didn’t talk to Tim Curley; he didn’t talk to Gary Schultz; he didn’t talk to Joe Paterno; he didn’t talk to Jerry Sandusky; he didn’t talk to Tom Harmon; he didn’t talk to Mike McQueary. He didn’t talk to any of the major players in this and I think, I understand why he went to those conclusions, and he did, but I believe the report is very incomplete and I do believe that as things come out, it’s going to emerge that some of the people who wrote some of the emails and so on are going to say that everything has been misspoken.”

“My feeling again is, and I’m really not looking to dodge because there are so many things that we don’t understand and hard to know, but I have many of the same facts that I reported on my own that are in the Freeh report – he jumped to conclusions that I cannot jump to. I mean, I jump to definitely there was a sense that Joe Paterno knew more than he suggested; there’s definitely a sense that Joe Paterno should have done more. But the cover up, the idea that he was actively following it, these sorts of things, I think they’re still, to me, they’re still up in the air.”

# # #

Costas: “Here’s a passage from your book: ‘as I was writing this book, the line before the time and the line after the time became clear. Before November 5, 2011, it was very difficult to find anyone willing to say a truly bad word about Joe Paterno. After November 5, it was far more difficult to find anyone willing to say a good word.’ And I think, and this is understandable, that to a lot of people that the nature of these crimes was so heinous, and the idea of inaction is so unfathomable that anything less than complete unequivocal condemnation is interpreted as somehow insufficient concern for the victims or the severity of the crime. That made your assignment to parse the good and the bad more difficult.”

Posnanski: “Very difficult. And I knew when this book came out, and like I say I’m very, very proud of it, but I knew when this book came out that it was going to get hit pretty hard by that group of people. I tried to make it as fair as you know. You’ve read it. There are many, many things about Joe Paterno in here that are not flattering – even long before Sandusky. It is as fair and honest of a book as I could write but it doesn’t hide from the fact that for 50 years people considered Joe Paterno a saint, and that for 50 years he was sportsman-of-the-year and he was considered the best thing about sports. We all know that.”

Costas: “Or among them.”

Posnanski: “Or among them. But people would write those words, ‘The best thing about sports is Joe Paterno.’ And suddenly that was gone, completely gone and in many ways rightfully so. But it’s not like those 50 years didn’t happen. And I think even mentioning those years, even talking about that time, for exactly the reasons you say, some people just don’t want to hear it.”

# # #

Costas: “Obviously there has been mixed reaction to the book. Among the reviews we’ve seen so far, this is the most extreme, Paul Campos at salon.com, ‘Paterno is a disgraceful book and a minor literary crime. To say Posnanski botches his journalistic and literary opportunity is akin to saying that the Titanic’s maiden voyage might have gone more smoothly.’ Let’s concede that that’s at one end, what criticism somewhere towards the middle of that, do you concede correct or fair?”

Posnanski: “I kind of felt like those guys in Spinal Tap there when you were reading that review. I think this is a book that as people get away from this, and are less emotional about it; they’ll see what I was trying to do in this book. I think that some people see it now, fortunately. But I think as time goes on and as people get less emotional about it, a lot of people who have written reviews, frankly, came in with the same opinion that they went out with. I’ve been, as you know, taking a lot of hits long before the book came out.”

Costas: “(According to public opinion) the only acceptable take is that Paterno was fully culpable in the most extreme interpretation, and that he was, prior to that, a fraud and a hypocrite and this doesn’t just invalidate the good he may have done, it exposes that good as a fraud.”

Posnanski: “Exactly, and I think that’s what certain people wanted. That’s not the story, that’s not the book. I wasn’t going to write THAT book. Somebody else can if they want. I wrote the honest book, the book that I believe is true. I believe that I had better access than I’ll ever get again for a book and I believe that I used it as well as I could.”

Costas: “What did you come away thinking? What is your bottom line on Joe Paterno?”

Posnanski: “I think really what I come away with is what a complicated life it was and what a big life it was.”

Costas: “Do you view him as a good man who made a tragic mistake, be it of omission or commission? Or is he less of a good man because of that mistake?”

Posnanski: “It’s somewhere in the middle. That’s a tough one. I don’t want to dodge it. I think he did a lot of good in his life and I think he did make a tragic mistake.”

Costas: “At his best, was he a good man?”

Posnanski: “Definitely. At his best, I think it’s too long and too distinguished and too many achievements to think that it was worth nothing.”
