Back-to-Back Quarterbacks: Robert Griffin III & Andrew Luck Featured on NFL Network’s Live Pro Day Coverage Wed. & Thurs.

March 20, 2012 By admin

NFL Network LIVE from Baylor Wed., March 21 at 1:00 PM ET & LIVE from Stanford Thurs., March 22 at 3:00 PM ET

Draft expert Mike Mayock live on location for both workouts

With the NFL Draft approaching, NFL Network this week will televise live the pro days of highly-rated quarterbacks Robert Griffin III from Baylor and Andrew Luck from Stanford, who will throw for NFL clubs for the first time this offseason.

NFL Network will televise special editions of Path to the Draft on Wednesday at 1:00 PM ET for the workouts at Baylor University and on Thursday at 3:00 PM ET for Stanford University’s pro day.  NFL Network draft expert Mike Mayock will be on-location for both workouts. Paul Burmeister and Charley Casserly will be in the Path to the Draft studio for the Baylor Pro Day. Burmeister will join Mayock on-location at Stanford with Fran Charles and Casserly in the studio.

On both days, NFL Network will feature additional post-workout coverage on the 6:00 PM ET edition of Path to the Draft and the 7:00 PM ET NFL Total Access.

“I know we are going to watch these two kids throw the ball,” Mayock said. “But what’s more intriguing to me is how the rest of these kids respond.”

Mayock on Baylor Pro Day: “This is a big day for Kendall Wright, a potential first-round wide receiver who ran poorly at the Combine. He needs to run a better 40 and needs to catch the ball from Robert Griffin, run routes, run verticals, and get in and out of breaks. It’s also a big day for offensive lineman Philip Blake and tailback Terrance Ganaway.”

Mayock on Stanford Pro Day: “There are a group of guys who will be picked in the first two rounds. Coby Fleener is my highest-rated tight end right now, but I don’t have a first-round tight end anywhere. Fleener has been hurt and couldn’t work out at the Combine. This is a huge day for him – how well does he run, how well does he catch, does he get in and out of breaks? They have two offensive linemen who could go in the first round. Let’s see their position drills. What’s going to happen with Jonathan Martin at left tackle? Is he a first-round left tackle? Certainly we know that David DeCastro is a first-round offensive guard.”

NFL Network airs seven days a week, 24 hours a day on a year-round basis and is the only television network fully dedicated to the NFL and the sport of football. For more information, log on to www.nfl.com/nflnetwork.

ESPN’s nominations were led by 30 for its studio, news and journalism efforts, capped by eight for Outside the Lines, seven for E:60 and four for ESPN Films documentaries:

  • ESPN’s coverage of all four of tennis’ Grand Slam events was cited for excellence in its features and bumps/teases in two categories, Editing and Camerawork.

ESPN.com was nominated in New Approaches – Sports Programming for Sports Science.  The TV version of the show was also nominated in Graphic Design, which it won last year.  Also, the “It’s not crazy, it’s sports” brand awareness promotional campaign is a nominee in Promotional Announcement – Institutional category for the “Fanwiches,” “Proposal” and “Towel around the World” spots.

In addition, as previously announced, Jack Whitaker, who covered all of sports’ biggest events during his remarkable long career with CBS and ABC, will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Overall, ESPN has won 142 Sports Emmy Awards in 24 years of eligibility.  ABC Sports won 160 from 1980 – 2008.

ESPN NFL Analysts React to Peyton Manning’s Decision to Join Denver Broncos

March 20, 2012 By admin

ESPN NFL analysts and experts react to the news that four-time NFL MVP Peyton Manning has made his decision to join the Denver Broncos. ESPN’s Chris Mortensen and Adam Schefter broke the news of Manning’s decision just prior to noon ET Monday.

On Manning’s relationship with John Elway being a key part of the decision…

“What started out as a friendship between the two men – them having played golf together before in the past – grew over the course of the last 10 or so days, and I think without John Elway in the front office, the Broncos probably would not have been able to bring home Peyton Manning. That was probably the key element here.”

— NFL Insider Adam Schefter

On what the addition of Manning means to Denver…

“He will be a huge addition to the franchise for this reason: he’s going to be a leader, No. 1, by example… secondly, he’s going to be able to have complete command of the offense and give John Fox, who by the way is a terrific coach, the luxury to really ramp up that defense and take that defense to another level.”

— NFL analyst Bill Polian, the former Indianapolis Colts general manager who drafted Peyton Manning

“Everyone just got better, particularly on the offensive side.  If you’re Eric Decker and Demaryius Thomas, wide receivers, you are just thrilled because the ball is going to come out with perfect timing in every single play.  If you’re Knowshon Moreno or Willis McGahee or someone they draft, you know you’re always going to run into good looks, because if you get eight in the box, Peyton is going to get out the play and throw the ball down the field. … Besides the skills set, the intelligence set, all players around him know they got a better quarterback.”

— NFL studio analyst Ron Jaworski

On why Manning might have chosen Denver…

“Knowing Peyton Manning, he wants to be part of the process. It’s very important to him what the coaching staff is like, how flexible they are, how engaged they are in doing it maybe a different way, not just the way they’ve done it before. … Peyton is just smarter when it comes to football than most people in the NFL. His functional football intelligence is greater than 98 percent of the league. So, he sees things a little bit differently. He wants to go somewhere where he knows he can put his fingerprint on it, that the organization will support him, and I think Denver was probably the best fit from day 1. … Peyton Manning makes everybody around him better. Not just players. He makes coaches better. He makes front office people better. He puts everybody at a heightened awareness, and they do their jobs more efficiently and more diligently when he’s in the building.”

— NFL studio analyst Trent Dilfer

“We can all speculate on why he made the decision. I think there’s no doubt that what he has in mind is to end his career by winning the Super Bowl.  John (Elway) was able, along with (Broncos owner) Pat Bowlen, to sell that to Peyton Manning.”

— NFL analyst and former Broncos linebacker Tom Jackson

On what the addition of Manning means to the Broncos and the NFL overall…

“He can really make a big huge difference for this team. It’s not just the one incremental step to the Super Bowl. If he can take this team to the Super Bowl, it really says ‘I did it’. … There’s a lot of upside there for Peyton, and a nice comfortable fit. … This is a team – young coaches that obviously can make adjustments. I think Peyton will be very careful. I don’t think he’s going to come in and break a lot of glass, but he will be collaborative and make sure he does his system.

“It’s going to force the whole country to kind of look west, and that will be good for everybody in the AFC West, but it will be a balance of power. Peyton Manning doesn’t have five or six, seven years to do this. He needs to do it now. The immediate result of him coming to Denver is Denver now needs to go win a Super Bowl – quickly. That’ll be the story of the year. It will be interesting to see how quickly they do manage to get into the playoffs. They got into the playoffs with Tim Tebow. Now can they extend that with Peyton Manning?”

— NFL analyst Steve Young

On how the Broncos will measure success with Peyton Manning…

“In the next two or three years, if they don’t win the division and win a playoff game, then it didn’t work. … The pieces are in place to be successful going forward throwing the football. Those pieces were not in place with Tebow.”

– Monday Night Football play-by-play voice Mike Tirico on ESPN Radio’s Scott Van Pelt Show

On what’s next for Tim Tebow with the Broncos’ addition of Manning…

“They’re going to try to do anything they can do to trade him. Ultimately, from a football perspective, if you talk to football people within this league, I don’t think any football people really want him on their football team… I don’t think they want to deal with the circus that is Tim Tebow, and also the fact that he doesn’t have the quarterbacking skills necessary to play in this league… I think the guy’s a good football player. I don’t think there’s any question about that. I don’t think he’s a good quarterback. I don’t think he has the skill set that you have to have to play quarterback in this league. And there’s a lot of teams, I mean, let’s face it – I live in Denver – I saw that circus on a week-to-week basis in person. And there’s not too many teams I think that really want to deal with that in their city.”

— NFL analyst Mark Schlereth, a two-time Broncos Super Bowl champion who still lives in the Denver area

“The more I studied him in an NFL setting, the more disturbed I was that he has no clue what he’s looking at. His IQ as a football player is not very good. That is why they have to come down and make it some of a college-form system that he’s comfortable with in Florida. He can’t execute, from a cerebral aspect, a pro-style system.”

— NFL analyst Merril Hoge

Webber on whether the Chicago Bulls can win without injured point guard Derrick Rose: “This team really believes they can win collectively.”

Webber on the body language of the Bulls and Orlando Magic: “Watching this…the Bulls body language says we want a championship. The bench of the Bulls says we want to win. The body language of the Magic looks as if they’re trying to find themselves.”

Webber on the Magic: “They are a very good team and if Dwight Howard believes in them, I definitely believe in them.”

Winer, O’Neal, Scott and Smith

Smith on the Magic defense: “That’s a concern for me for Orlando. We always keep talking about Dwight [Howard] but they can’t get stops. You can’t tell me which guy on their team besides Quentin Richardson is a lock down defender.”

O’Neal on the Bulls maintaining momentum without Derrick Rose: “Even though Mr. MVP [Derrick Rose] is not there, they don’t panic at all. Everyone is getting easy baskets, they are having fun. This is a great Chicago team.”

Webber on Bulls forward Carlos Boozer’s improved confidence: “This isn’t the Boozer of last year that was rushing and wasn’t sure of his role.  This year, he’s coming in and trusting himself and his teammates even more.”

Webber on the Dallas Mavericks saving their energy until the Playoffs: “You have to wonder why Dallas Mavericks have been in the tank as of late. Hopefully for their sake they are a little bit old and saving what’s in the reserve. This is going to be very interesting playoffs, especially starting one day after the regular season ends.”

TNT’s David Aldridge interviewed Chicago Bulls guard John Lucas III following his 20-pt night

Lucas: “We needed this win. It’s a good road win for us.”

Game 2:  Dallas Mavericks (112) @ Denver Nuggets (95)

Sprint Halftime Report
Winer, O’Neal and Scott

Scott on the Nuggets lack of an inside presence: “I’m still concerned with Denver getting rid of Nene, they have no inside presence. And they have to force the tempo.”

****    ****    ****    ****

Fratello on Mavericks guard Vince Carter: “Vince Carter is so dangerous behind the 3-pt line. At the end of the game you better make sure you know where he is on the floor.”

TNT’s Cheryl Miller interviewed Dallas Mavericks center Dirk Nowitzki after his 33-pt night:

Nowitzki on the Mavericks getting back to last year’s form: “We just have to get back to the stuff we were doing last year. It helps when you shoot the ball well.”

Inside the NBA presented by Hyundai
Winer, O’Neal and Scott

Scott on if the Nuggets can make the playoffs: “I’m interested to see if Denver can hold on to a [playoff] spot.  We know they can get out and run but if they get in a half-court set, it’s kind of sketchy where they will get their offense from.”

O’Neal on Atlanta Hawks guard Joe Johnson: “If Joe [Johnson] did more [driving to the basket], he could be in the category of a LeBron [James], Dwyane Wade or Kevin Durant. Right now, he just stands out there and shoots jumpers.”

O’Neal on the Boston Celtics: “They might have a lot of [mental] lapses but they never panic and they’ll get the win.”

O’Neal on the Philadelphia 76ers: “I’m surprised that Philadelphia didn’t make a trade to get better [at the trade deadline]. To me, they don’t have a closer.”

Winer: “They picked up Sam Young from Memphis [in a trade]. That was the one thing that they did.”

O’Neal: “Like I said…they didn’t make a trade. They still need a closer.”

Scott on New York Knicks head coach Mike Woodson getting the team to play defense: “If [Woodson] can get Carmelo [Anthony] and Amar’e [Stoudemire] to play defense together, they could be a tough out because they know they can score.”

Smith on Cleveland Cavaliers rookie point guard Kyrie Irving: “Most of the time when you’re a rookie point guard, you try to speed up your play. [Irving] plays at his pace, he gets to where he wants to and he knocks down shots.”

O’Neal on Minnesota Timberwolves forward Kevin Love: “In about three years from now, [Love is] going to be where Dirk Nowitzki was when he started to step his game up.”
