A Survivor’s Story on HBO’s Real Sports Tuesday night
REAL SPORTS WITH BRYANT GUMBEL
INTERVIEWS NICK SCHUYLER, THE LONE SURVIVOR OF
A FLORIDA BOATING ACCIDENT,
PROFILES A HOMELESS MAN WHO’S BRINGING LITTLE LEAGUE
BALL BACK TO COMPTON, CAL., AND
UPDATES ITS INSPIRING STORY ON A SPECIAL NEEDS STUDENT-ATHLETE
WHEN THE EMMY®-WINNING SHOW RETURNS AUG. 18, EXCLUSIVELY ON HBO
REAL SPORTS WITH BRYANT GUMBEL presents more enterprising features and reporting when its 149th edition, available in HDTV, debuts TUESDAY, AUG. 18 (10:00 p.m. ET/PT & 9:00 p.m. CT), exclusively on HBO.
HBO On Demand availability: Aug. 24-Sept. 14
Segments include:
*Nick Schuyler’s Story. In an exclusive extended interview, REAL SPORTS sits down with former University of South Florida football player Nick Schuyler as he speaks for the first time about the boating accident that claimed the lives of three people and nearly took his own. On Feb. 28, 2009, Schuyler and his friends – Oakland Raiders linebacker Marquis Cooper, who owned the boat, free-agent NFL defensive lineman Corey Smith and former South Florida teammate Will Bleakley – headed out to the Gulf of Mexico for a day-long fishing trip. When the group failed to return home by nightfall, an intensive search was initiated, and on March 2, the Coast Guard discovered the group’s capsized vessel more than 30 miles west of Tampa Bay, with Schuyler, the lone survivor, clinging to life. Nearly six months since the tragedy that took the lives of three young men, Nick Schuyler sits down with correspondent Bernard Goldberg for an emotional discussion of what went wrong.
Producers: Nick Dolin, Josh Fine, Joe Perskie.
*Home Base. After a 30-year absence, little league baseball is making a much-needed comeback in Compton, Cal.’s Sibrie Park. The man behind the movement to draw African-American kids to baseball and keep them away from drugs and gang violence is 52-year-old Tim Lewis. A recovering alcoholic and drug abuser who lives out of his car, Lewis has seen his life take many turns for the worse over the years, but as correspondent Jon Frankel shows in this REAL SPORTS/Sports Illustrated report, using baseball to help kids in his neighborhood has provided him with an unlikely shot at redemption.
Producer: Amani Martin.
*Dedication Personified. Realizing a dream can be one of the hardest things to accomplish in life, as Ryan Belflower knows. A former special education student from Clovis East High School in California, he devoted four years to becoming a member of the school’s varsity basketball team. This singular pursuit led him to manage the girls’ team, and get balls and fill water bottles for the boys’ team, culminating in a storybook three-pointer after being allowed to suit up his senior season. Belflower’s transition from a shy, introverted freshman to a basketball player honored on senior night is remarkable considering the social and developmental disabilities he had to overcome. Originally profiling Belflower nearly four years ago, REAL SPORTS correspondent Frank Deford revisits this remarkable young man to learn about his life since leaving high school.
Producers: Jill Klapper, Mike Sullivan.

KARROS ON MOYER MOVING ASIDE FOR PEDRO: ‘YOU HAVE TO DO IT’ – MLB on FOX game analyst Eric Karros believes the Philadelphia Phillies made the correct decision in moving Jamie Moyer to the bullpen to make room for Pedro Martinez in the starting rotation. “You have to do it because Philadelphia’s pitching is too left-hand dominant. You know what you’re going to get out of Moyer but you’re not certain about what Pedro has in the tank; he could offer you more innings and it’s as good a time as any to find out if you’ve got lightening in a bottle.” Karros calls Saturday’s Phillies @ Braves game alongside Kenny Albert & Ken Rosenthal.
RINGOLSBY: PLAYERS USED TO HANDLE THEIR OWN BEANBALL WARS – A week after the Prince Fielder/Guillermo Mota incident and the ejections in the Bronx, beanball wars have once again come to the forefront. FOXSports.com Hall of Fame MLB writer Tracy Ringolsby wishes that players would be allowed to solve these issues on the field and not by the MLB higher ups. “In recent years players have had the ability to take care of matters on their own stripped away by upper management. The upshot is a whole lot of weak-acted moments of machismo that do little other than get players suspended and fined.”

ROSENTHAL: DODGERS JUST MISSED ON DREAM BULLPEN – As the trade deadline approached, the Dodgers were close to acquiring Padres closer Heath Bell. The move, FOXSports.com senior writer & MLB on FOX insider, Ken Rosenthal says, could’ve been a dream in Chavez Ravine. “The combination of Bell and newly acquired lefty George Sherrill would have given the Dodgers a powerful right-left setup tandem in front of closer Jonathan Broxton. The increased bullpen depth also would have allowed manager Joe Torre to rely less on his starters, who rank 12th in the National League in innings per start.”

ROSENTHAL: SMOLTZ REFUSES MOVE TO MINORS; TWO OPTIONS LEFT – John Smoltz refused the option of an assignment to the minor leagues, leaving the Red Sox with the option of either trading him or releasing him. FOXSports.com senior writer & MLB on FOX insider, Ken Rosenthal thinks Smoltz will end up in the NL. “Smoltz still must decide whether to retire or continue pitching. My guess is that he wants to pitch, that the Red Sox will end up releasing him and that he will sign with a National League team. He might do better with say, the Dodgers – pitcher-friendly park, pitcher-friendly league.”

BILLICK: BRINGING IN VICK NOT JUST ABOUT HANDLING PR – There’s been a lot of speculation lately on which NFL teams have interest in bringing in Michael Vick. NFL on FOX analyst Brian Billick says there’s “football decisions” to make in addition to looking at it from a public relations standpoint. “Aside from the PR side of things, just bringing a talent like Vick in brings a unique set of circumstances to your team. What does it do to your current quarterback group, the psyche of your No. 1 QB? We all saw an almost dysfunctional situation with the ‘Favre-talk’ in Minnesota and whether it had any affects on Sage Rosenfels and Tarvaris Jackson. What would be Vick’s role and what does his addition do to the expectations of your team? Beyond the obvious implications of how Vick’s addition would be perceived by your fans and advertisers, there are a number of legitimate football issues that need to be addressed.”

Aflac All-American High School Baseball Classic Showcases Future Stars
Chance for Fans to See “Baseball’s LeBron”
Bryce Harper, the baseball prodigy and Sports Illustrated cover boy who has been described as a “once in a lifetime talent” and “baseball’s LeBron,” will make his national TV debut LIVE on Fox Sports Net in the Aflac All-American High School Baseball Classic Sunday, August 16 at 8:00 PM ET.
The game, which will showcase 40 of the nation’s top high school baseball players, will be played in PETCO Park, home of the San Diego Padres, and will be televised live nationally on FOX Sports Net and select Comcast regional sports networks to more than 90 million homes. Daron Sutton, television voice of the Arizona Diamondbacks, will call play-by-play, while former Houston Astros great and 7-time All-Star Craig Biggio will provide analysis.
Harper, the 16-year-old phenom whose tape-measure home runs have been a YouTube sensation, will anchor the squad of all-stars from the West in an East vs. West format. Harper is one of the most publicized prospects in the history of high school baseball and is a special inclusion in the 2009 Aflac All-American class. Since being the subject of a recent Tom Verducci cover story in Sports Illustrated, Harper’s fame has exploded beyond amateur baseball circles and is one of the most closely watched high school athletes since LeBron James. Harper recently enrolled in the College of Southern Nevada and is expected to enter the 2010 Major League Baseball draft.
This marks the seventh consecutive year FSN has televised the Aflac All-American High School Baseball Classic.
