Following are highlights from this week’s Major League Baseball coverage on ESPN: Ryan Howard Steals Sunday Night Baseball Spotlight This week’s Sunday Night Baseball (Aug. 23) telecast will feature the Boston Red Sox hosting the New York Yankees at 8 p.m. Jon Miller calls Sunday Night games with analysts Joe Morgan and Steve Phillips. Baseball Tonight, with host Steve Berthiaume, analysts John Kruk, Peter Gammons and Dave Winfield, will originate live from Fenway at 7 p.m. Olney, Phillips and Hershiser Discuss N.L. Cy Young Picture Analysts Steve Phillips and Orel Hershiser also discussed the N.L. Cy Young race on Monday Night Baseball (Aug. 17): Phillips, on the N.L. Cy Young Frontrunners – “You have to look at Tim Lincecum as the guy. You look at strikeout numbers he’s logging right now, he’s blowing everybody away. Chris Carpenter’s numbers are fantastic. His strikeout numbers are down a little bit because he missed a month of the season with the oblique strain. Matt Cain is something else. He’s probably going to get his votes canceled out by the fact his teammate Tim Lincecum is putting up such a big year.” Hershiser, on N.L. Cy Young Contenders – “Josh Johnson is dominating down there with Florida. I don’t know if Adam Wainwright should be a contender; he might need to be in that front pack, the way things are going. Dan Haren, of course, we don’t hear much about him in Arizona. They haven’t been on top of the pack, but he’s having an outstanding year. Jason Marquis, in Colorado…Jim Tracy turned that whole organization around.”

ROSENTHAL: SMOLTZ SHOULD START FOR CARDINALS – Upon hearing that future Hall of Fame pitcher, John Smoltz, was acquired by the St. Louis Cardinals this afternoon, MLB on FOX Insider Ken Rosenthal initially believes that Smoltz should start rather than be used in the bullpen. “My guess is that Smoltz should start. I am not certain that, coming off shoulder surgery, he could handle the rigors of relieving. He would have to be handled with care and probably would be unable to go back-to-back days. With that said, he was very successful against right-handed hitters with the Red Sox – almost like a right-handed specialist would be.”
Rosenthal joins Kenny Albert and Tim McCarver at Fenway Park this Saturday when the Yankees take on the Red Sox.
MARVEZ: THE FAVRE CIRCUS IS ONLY BEGINNING – After watching Brett Favre’s first Vikings news conference, FOXSports.com’s senior NFL writer Alex Marvez thinks the special treatment has gotten out of hand. “How many of his peers could flip-flop on retirement, skip 10 days of training camp and then waltz into the starting lineup at their own whim? Favre did just that Tuesday when signing — finally — with Minnesota,” says Marvez. “I can’t imagine fellow quarterbacks like Peyton Manning and Tom Brady being willing to put their own interests ahead of teammates who already have given so much time and energy preparing for the upcoming season. But if Favre’s past few seasons have taught us anything, it’s that the circus is only beginning.”

Quotes from President Obama Interview on ESPN2’s NASCAR Now
Quotes from President Obama Interview on ESPN2’s NASCAR Now
President Barack Obama was interviewed live during ESPN2’s NASCAR Now program originating from the White House in Washington, D.C., today. The President was honoring three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson as well as other current NASCAR drivers and some past champions of the sport in a ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House. Following the ceremony, the President joined NASCAR Now host Nicole Manske and ESPN NASCAR analyst Brad Daugherty for the live interview.
Q – We just saw you honoring Jimmie Johnson and the 2008 Chase for the Championship contenders. Why was this something that NASCAR and the White House decided to do?
President Obama – NASCAR is a quintessential American sport. I think that its fan base is now worldwide, but when you think about its roots, when you think about all the people who have such an attachment to the drivers, and when you think about the fact that right now the U.S. auto industry is going through a tough time, we wanted to make sure we highlight the fact that this is a great sport, is a great brand for not just NASCAR itself but also for America, and we thought it was a great opportunity to celebrate some champions.
Q – Why is it important for the Big Three auto manufacturers to remain committed to NASCAR?
President Obama – I think that it’s about as good advertising as you can get. If somebody’s excited about NASCAR, that means they’re excited about cars. And we want to make sure that people know what great American cars are, and obviously it’s understandable at a time when GM has gone through some tough times, that they may need to cut back sponsorships briefly, but over the long term, if we look 5-10 years out, I think they’re going to come back stronger than ever, and I think their association with NASCAR makes a great difference.
Q – We know you’re excellent at filling out your sports brackets. What about winning the Chase championship? Have you filled out that bracket?
President Obama – Well first of all I think it’s a little early. I think I’ve got to see a little more information before we make a final decision here. But obviously when you’ve got champions like Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, just a lot of folks who are capable of winning at any given time, so I’m not going to pretend like I can pick them, but maybe when we get right there down to the end, I’ll go ahead and take the punch.
Q – You’re passionate about sports. Jimmie Johnson has won three consecutive championships – who in sports world can you compare this to?
President Obama – In terms of individual sports, you’ve got some folks like Tiger Woods, and Roger Federer in tennis, who have established dominance in their sport. Jimmie is somebody who obviously, and his whole team, knows what they’re doing and knows how to win. They’re going to have a lot more wins probably under their belt in the future. He looks like a pretty young guy. I saw him getting in and out of the 48 and I was thinking I would have strained something, broke something. He didn’t even tear his suit. That’s the least that would have happened to me – I would’ve had a big rip somewhere.
Q – You were talking earlier about the family atmosphere in NASCAR. Why do you think NASCAR has become such a strong fabric in the American sports culture?
President Obama – I think part of it is what you described – that families can go to the track and they can see these great races and enjoy a good family event that lasts for awhile and it’s affordable. But part of it is also the fact that I think racing teams themselves are a family and it’s a reminder that the guy behind the wheel is not the only person involved in this thing. That it takes a pit crew, it takes the engineers back at the shop, and all of that contributes to the sense of community that is part of what makes this country strong.
Q – It’s a long-standing tradition to have champions at the White House. The 2009 Cup champion – if you had to place a bet, who that would be?
President Obama – The key to making good predictions in sports is waiting until the last minute to make them. I’m two-for-two so far. I called the Steelers; I called the Tar Heels. I haven’t yet called the baseball season because I’m holding out hope that my White Sox might still have a chance. So you guys call me up right before the end of the race and I’ll let you know who I think is going to come out on top.
Q – When are we going to get you to a race?
President Obama – I would love to do it. I was supposed to do it during the campaign but we just ended up having to travel too much and we weren’t able to devote the amount of time that I wanted to. Hopefully sometime during my presidency I’m going to get out there.

IS SEEN LIVE SATURDAY, SEPT. 26 ON HBO
HBO Sports presents an intriguing heavyweight title fight between two ring giants when WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING: VITALI KLITSCHKO VS. CRISTOBAL ARREOLA is presented live SATURDAY, SEPT. 26 (10:00 p.m. ET/7:00 p.m. PT) from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, exclusively on HBO. HBO2 playdates: Sept. 27 (4:30 p.m.) and 29 (midnight)
Native Ukrainian Vitali “Dr. Iron Fist” Klitschko (37-2, 36 KOs), who now resides in Los Angeles, is the elder of the PhD- and heavyweight title-holding Klitschko brothers. Widely regarded, along with sibling Wladimir, as the class of the heavyweight division, Vitali’s commanding 6’7” presence and exceptional knockout power make him a formidable opponent. He is returning to the site of his legendary battle with Hall of Famer Lennox Lewis in June 2003, when a cut above Klitschko’s left eye ended the fight after six hard-hitting rounds. Resuming his career in 2008 after four years away from boxing, he subsequently knocked out former heavyweight titleholder Samuel Peter, as well as the undefeated Juan Carlos Gomez.
Hailing from Riverside, Cal., Cristobal “Nightmare” Arreola (27-0, 24 KOs) hopes to use his hometown advantage to take down the taller Klitschko. At 6’4”, Arreola is hardly undersized or underpowered, impressively knocking out 24 of his 27 opponents while going undefeated against the likes of Travis Walker, Jameel McCline and Chazz Witherspoon. Now, the fast-rising 28-year-old has a chance to send shockwaves through the boxing world and become the first heavyweight titleholder of Mexican heritage.
All WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING events are broadcast in HDTV. HBO viewers must have access to the HBO HDTV channel to watch HBO programming in high definition.
The executive producer of WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING is Rick Bernstein; producer, Jon Crystal; director, Marc Payton.

Boxing After Dark returns to HBO Saturday night
HBO SPORTS HOSTS THREE SIZZLING SHOWDOWNS WHEN
HBO BOXING AFTER DARK®: JUAN DIAZ VS. PAULIE MALIGNAGGI,
MALCOLM KLASSEN VS. ROBERT GUERRERO AND
DANNY JACOBS VS. ISHE SMITH IS SEEN SATURDAY, AUG. 22
HBO Sports hosts three sizzling showdowns in the Texas heat when HBO BOXING AFTER DARK: JUAN DIAZ VS. PAULIE MALIGNAGGI, MALCOLM KLASSEN VS. ROBERT GUERRERO AND DANNY JACOBS VS. ISHE SMITH is presented SATURDAY, AUG. 22 at 9:45 p.m. (ET/PT) & 8:45 p.m. CT, from the Toyota Center in Houston, exclusively on HBO. The HBO Sports team of Bob Papa, Lennox Lewis and Max Kellerman will be ringside for the event, which will be available in HDTV, closed-captioned for the hearing-impaired and presented in Spanish on HBO Latino.
In the main event, Houston hometown hero and former lightweight champion Juan Diaz (34-2, 17 KOs) takes on Brooklyn native and former junior welterweight champ Paulie Malignaggi (26-2, 5 KOs) in a scheduled 12-round junior welterweight bout. The 25-year-old Diaz is a seasoned professional who won a lightweight title from Lakva Sim in 2004 and successfully defended his crown in eight subsequent bouts, including a unification showdown with Julio Diaz. Impressively, he did all this while attending the University of Houston downtown campus, and received his degree earlier this year. Now, he looks to rebound from his loss to the formidable Juan Manuel Marquez last February in a fight that thrilled the boxing world.
Malignaggi, 28, is no stranger to championship competition, having dethroned junior welterweight champ Lovemore N’dou to win a title in 2007. He followed this impressive performance with two successful title defenses, then lost a high-profile showdown with hard-hitting British star Ricky Hatton last November.
The co-main event is a 12-round bout that features current super featherweight titleholder Malcolm Klassen (24-4-2, 15 KOs) of South Africa defending his belt against west coast native Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (24-1-1, 17 KOs), who’s looking to add a second weight class to his championship repertoire. A ten-year veteran, Klassen’s resume includes a victory over Manuel Medina and a TKO of fellow South African Cassius Baloyi, which earned him the 130-pound crown. Challenging Klassen is two-time featherweight champ Robert Guerrero. The 26-year-old Guerrero, from Gilroy, Cal., seeks to maintain his high percentage of KO triumphs.
The opening bout showcases another New Yorker, as Brooklyn’s Danny Jacobs (17-0, 15 KOs) takes on the more-experienced Ishe Smith (21-3, 9 KOs) in a ten-round middleweight bout. A rising prospect in the middleweight division, the 22-year-old Jacobs is making waves in the boxing community with his exceptional knockout power, having scored nine of his 15 KOs in the first round. Hailing from Las Vegas, Smith, 31, appeared on the boxing reality series “The Contender” and now hopes to hand Jacobs the first loss of his promising career.
In the telecast from Houston, HBO will present a remembrance of recently deceased boxing stars Alexis Arguello, Arturo Gatti and Vernon Forrest.
The executive producer of HBO BOXING AFTER DARK is Rick Bernstein; producer, Jon Crystal; director, Mike Sheehan.
