Former Giants Wide Receiver Plaxico Burress Speaks Exclusively to E:60 Tuesday, Aug. 25, at 7 p.m. ET; Excerpts to Debut on SportsCenter, Monday, Aug. 24 at 6 p.m. ET

Former N.Y. Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress, will talk in detail with correspondent Jeremy Schaap in an exclusive E:60 interview, Tuesday, Aug. 25, at 7 p.m. ET, about the early morning hours of Nov. 29, when he accidentally shot himself in the leg with his own gun at the Latin Quarter nightclub in Midtown N.Y., and about the two-year jail sentence he now faces.

Burress pleaded guilty Thursday, Aug. 20, to the weapons charge and avoided what would have been a mandatory minimum sentence of three years for second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He will head to prison when he is officially sentenced Sept. 22, and will be eligible for release after serving a little more than 20 months. The NFL has suspended Burress but will reinstate him once he completes his sentence.

Burress previously had a license to carry the gun in Florida, but it had expired nearly seven months before the shooting.

Excerpts from the interview will debut Monday, Aug. 24, on SportsCenter at 6 p.m. ET and in subsequent editions of the show. The interview will air in full on E:60.

“The NFL Head Coaches” Show Debuts On NFL Network

“THE NFL HEAD COACHES” SHOW DEBUTS

ON NFL NETWORK

Former NFL Head Coach Mike Martz Makes NFL Network Analyst Debut, Joins Former Head Coaches Steve Mariucci and

Jim Mora On New Monday Night Studio Show Hosted by Charles Davis

This fall, NFL Network gives fans more inside access into the game with the debut of The NFL Head Coaches, presented by Travelers Monday, September 14 at 6:30 PM ET. Hosted by Charles Davis, the weekly half-hour show features a trio of former head coaches – Steve Mariucci, Mike Martz and Jim Mora – who have been on the sidelines and experienced the ups and downs associated with being at the helm of a team in the National Football League.

The NFL Head Coaches also marks Martz’s debut as an NFL Network analyst for the 2009 season. Martz joins the rotation of expert analysts on NFL Total Access and NFL Network’s live coverage of annual league events.

The NFL Head Coaches provides an inside look at game plans as Mariucci, Martz and Mora review the previous Sunday’s games and analyze the big plays and tough decisions NFL head coaches encounter. With 50 seasons of NFL coaching experience combined from three different coaching philosophies, NFL Network’s resident coaching trio share situations and experiences from their careers that remain applicable to today’s head coach.

“The head coach’s point of view is similar to that of a CEO of a company,” said NFL Network Executive Producer Eric Weinberger. “They manage so many different areas of a team, from evaluating talent to the split-second decisions made during a game. There’s a very unique point to view that a head coach provides and our panel of experts can shed some light on what separates a win from a loss.”

With nine years of NFL head coaching experience with the San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions, Mariucci compiled a record of 72-67 and led his teams to four playoff appearances including the 1997 NFC Championship game with San Francisco. As a quarterback coach with the Green Bay Packers under Mike Holmgren, Mariucci’s offensive expertise, developed as a protégé of the Bill Walsh coaching tree, helped mold the talents of future Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre. Mariucci was also nominated for an Emmy award last season as an analyst.

Martz joins NFL Network’s team of analysts following 12 years as an NFL coach. Known for his offensive mind, Martz, who was hired as the St. Louis Rams’ offensive coordinator by then-head coach Dick Vermeil in 1999, led St. Louis to a Super Bowl championship that season. The following year, Martz took over head coaching duties from Vermeil and held that position for the next five years. During that time, Martz developed one of the NFL’s most prolific offenses nicknamed “The Greatest Show on Turf,” led by four-time Pro Bowl QB Kurt Warner and seven-time Pro Bowl selection and current NFL Network analyst Marshall Faulk.

Mora began his NFL coaching career with the New Orleans Saints from 1986-1996, followed by a three-year head coaching stint with the Indianapolis Colts. In his first season with the Colts, Mora played an integral role in Indianapolis’ selection of Peyton Manning over Ryan Leaf as the number one overall selection in the 1998 NFL Draft.

In his fourth season with NFL Network, Davis has evolved into one of football’s most versatile broadcasters, expanding his repertoire with hosting duties on The NFL Head Coaches. Davis also serves as one of the NFL Network’s college football experts, providing analysis during the Network’s Senior Bowl, NFL Scouting Combine and NFL Draft coverage and on the show Path to the Draft. Outside of NFL Network, Davis is a game analyst for the Big Ten Network and FOX Sports’ BCS Championship and NFL Sunday game broadcasts.

NFL Network airs seven days a week, 24 hours a day on a year-round basis and is the only television network fully dedicated to the NFL and the sport of football.  For more information, log on to www.nfl.com/nflnetwork. NFL.com is the exclusive internet home of NFL Network.

ESPN to Test 3D Production of USC at Ohio State College Football Telecast September 12

August 24, 2009 By admin

ESPN to Test 3D Production of USC at Ohio State College Football Telecast September 12
3D Game Production to be Shown in Select Theaters
Next Step in ESPN’s Research and Development of 3D

ESPN will test its 3D production capabilities with a special telecast of #4 USC at #6 Ohio State on Saturday, September 12, at 8 p.m. ET. The game will also be televised in standard definition and high definition on ESPN and ESPN HD, respectively. The production will be ESPN’s first 3D telecast distributed to fans in more than two years of testing, supplying further research for ESPN as it continues to develop best practices for utilizing the technology in live game applications. It will provide ESPN the ability to evaluate workflow operations, 3D camera positioning, transmission changes and gauge fan reaction to a 3D telecast versus a 2D.

“With more than two years of rigorous 3D research at various game sites, ESPN is taking the opportunity to integrate 3D testing in a live game telecast,” said Anthony Bailey, vice president, emerging technologies, ESPN. “The results of this research will enable ESPN to quantify what it takes to produce, transmit and enable the 3D experience for our fans.”

The Galen Center on the USC campus will show the 3D production as well as theaters in Columbus, Ohio, Hartford, Conn. and Hurst, Texas (near Dallas). Tickets will not be sold for this event, however fans will have the opportunity to win tickets to the screenings through 710 ESPN Los Angeles; 103.3 ESPN Dallas and WBNS-FM in Columbus.

ESPN will employ separate production trucks, technical crews and on-air commentators for the 3D and 2D productions. Mark Jones and Bob Davie will announce the 3D game while Brent Musburger, Kirk Herbstreit and reporter Lisa Salters will work the telecast on ESPN and ESPN HD.

“ESPN is an industry leader in developing creative and dynamic technical innovations that enhance the experience for fans – such as being the first to launch a 24/7 high definition network in March 2003,” said Jed Drake, ESPN senior vice president & executive producer, event production. “With 44 Sports Emmys for technology, it is only fitting that ESPN plays a cutting edge role in exploring the use of 3D game telecasts to better serve the fans.”

ESPN will utilize the following technical elements during this production:
  • First use of true stereoscopic graphics in a 3D telecast
  • Seven 3D cameras to capture game action with access to 2D cameras
  • Various display types and transport mechanisms for 3D viewing including cinema projection, large-scale arena viewing, and consumer LCD sized monitors

ESPN’s State of the SportsNation: First Month’s Highlights

August 21, 2009 By admin

ESPN's SportsNation

SN

* In the popular segment “Fake Calls from Real Fans,” SportsNation can call in (1-888-FAN-ESPN) and pretend to be a certain star athlete or celebrity posing a question to Colin and Michelle. Well before Brett Favre’s “unretirement,” a young fan called in as Adrian Peterson and asked if the Vikings would win a Super Bowl with No. 4 at the helm.

End of the Day

* Fans can help producers decide the show’s content, delivering their input via Twitter (@SportsNation), ESPN.com’s SportsNation web page, e-mail (sportsnation@espn.com), and phone calls (1-888-FAN-ESPN) before, during and after the show.

Fake Calls from Real Fans

* SportsNation airs weekdays on ESPN2 – 4-5 p.m. ET, and again at midnight ET.

After one month on the air, the new studio show SportsNation has attracted a ravenous following of fans based on its interactive format that encourages social media – via Twitter, Facebook, e-mail and the increasingly popular “Fake Calls from Real Fans.” Here are some highlights from SportsNation’s first month:

Should MLB’s All-Star starters play majority of the game?

If SportsNation co-host Colin Cowherd were in charge of the MLB All-Star Game, he’d employ farm animals and goofy golf, “and I’ve had A-Rod pitch.” SportsNation agreed – 53% said starters shouldn’t play the majority of the All-Star Game.

Should fans wear pro jerseys in public?

File this one under “Colin’s Personal Pet Peeves” – in “FAN-ish or FOOL-ish?” Cowherd has a genuine distaste for (foolish) fans who flaunt a favorite player’s jersey anywhere other than at the appropriate sporting event. Co-host Michelle Beadle agrees, citing “the grown man / grown man thing; weird.”

Games

During the game “NUM8ER CRUNCH,” in which the co-hosts have to discuss and guess the correct result of a SportsNation poll, Cowherd likens soccer sensation David Beckham to a car that won’t start. Then it just gets silly.

Weird Web Stories

Proof that SportsNation is for the fans and by the fans, the segment “Weird Web Stories” conjures video clips from the Internet (sent in by fans) that often just don’t need any explanation.

On Eve of the 20th Anniversary of Pete Rose’s Banishment from Baseball, OTL Examines the Ban and the Man
Outside the Lines (Sunday, Aug. 23, 9 a.m. ET ESPN; noon ESPNEWS)

Pete Rose

On Aug. 24, 1989, Pete Rose officially became a baseball outcast. Then-commissioner Bart Giamatti banned the all-time hits king for life after concluding that Rose, then the manager of the Cincinnati Reds, had bet on baseball and on his team. After nearly 15 years of denials, Rose publicly admitted in his 2004 book that he bet on baseball. On the eve of the 20th anniversary of the historic ban, Outside the Lines host Bob Ley examines the legacy through the eyes of Rose’s former teammates Joe Morgan and Mike Schmidt, as well as a Rose adversary, Fay Vincent, the successor to the late Giamatti. The show will also consider how the steroids era has affected perspectives on Rose.

“The thing that made Pete such a great baseball player has always been his downfall, always. He always fights to the end. You know, he thinks he can win every battle and you can’t win every battle. I think he sees that now.” — Joe Morgan, Pete Rose’s teammate with the Reds 1972-’78, and Phillies 1983

“I do not think there is a chance in hell that Bud Selig will reinstate Pete Rose. I hope I’m right.” — Fay Vincent, MLB Deputy Commissioner 1989, Commissioner 1989-’92

Victory… and Vengeance
Outside the Lines piece will debut on SportsCenter (Sunday 11 p.m., ESPN)

Ricky James

Four years ago, Motocross racer Ricky James was broadsided by his friend and fellow competitor Jarred Browne as Browne attempted to pass him on the track. The collision left James temporarily paralyzed from the chest down. His spirit helped him navigate a new reality and he was soon racing again, skydiving and even completing the World Ironman Championship. Despite his many achievements, James was unable to get past the incident with Browne and the anger he felt toward his friend. That forced James to rethink his racing career, his future and his life. Jamie Little goes Outside the Lines in this report about retaliation and redemption.

Yankee Boy

Yankee Boy
Growing up with cerebral palsy, 11-year-old Tom Ellenson could not walk or speak. But his father created a device that allowed him to communicate as a kid his age would, and his “voice” inspired a little league baseball team in New York City to excel. Ellenson’s magic touch with the team got the attention of the New York Yankees, who gave Ellenson and his teammates a day they will never forget. ESPN’s E:60 was given exclusive access to document Ellenson’s day spent with the Yankees, including a ceremonial first pitch different than any other first pitch in Major League Baseball history.

Parkersburg

Parkersburg
The small town of Parkersburg, Iowa, was nearly destroyed by a tornado in 2008 and was rocked again on June 24, 2009, when beloved high school football coach Ed Thomas was shot to death in the Aplington-Parkersburg High School weight room by Mark Becker, one of his former players. Compounding the tragedy was the fact that the Thomas and Becker families had been friends for more than 30 years. In a town where high school football is king, Thomas had produced four current NFL players, and the community rallied around the coach after the tornado to get the school’s football field ready for its season-opening game. ESPN reporter Steve Cyphers and E:60 follow the story of a family and a community trying to deal with the loss of their leader, with the opening of the 2009 football season quickly approaching. The report includes exclusive interviews with members of the Thomas family, who speak about their loss, the power of their faith and the importance of embracing Scott Becker, Mark’s younger brother, and a senior lineman on the team.

Daniel Frias was raised in Mexico’s most violent city – Ciudad Juarez, which attributes 1,600 deaths to organized crime in 2008 alone – and at one point it appeared his future was headed in the wrong direction. However, soccer gave him the opportunity to reinvent himself. He now plays striker for his city’s only First Division team and sets an example for many youngsters who might otherwise see violence and crime as their only options in life.

NFL & NBC Announce Two-Year Contract Extension

August 20, 2009 By admin

NEW YORK – August 19, 2009 – The National Football League and NBC Sports today announced a two-year extension of their broadcast partnership under which NBC will remain the home of “Sunday Night Football” for the 2012 and 2013 seasons. NFL clubs approved the extension at a league meeting today in Chicago.

The original six-year deal between NBC Sports and the NFL, which includes innovative flexible scheduling, started with the 2006 season and runs through the 2011 season. As with the original agreement, NBC will broadcast 16 regular season “Sunday Night Football” games, each season’s “NFL Opening Kickoff” Thursday night primetime game, both Wild Card Saturday games and preseason games in primetime. The NFL will continue to provide flexible game scheduling over the final seven weeks of the regular season to ensure quality matchups and games with playoff implications.

“Sunday Night Football” is preceded each week at 7 p.m. ET by “Football Night in America,” which provides comprehensive highlights and analysis of the day’s events in the NFL, along with a preview of that night’s “Sunday Night Football” contest.

NBC & THE NFL: NBC’s long history with the NFL dates back 70 years to 1939 when NBC became the first network to televise an NFL game Philadelphia Eagles vs. Brooklyn Dodgers from Ebbets Field to the approximately 1,000 sets then in New York. NBC first broadcast the NFL Championship Game in 1955. In 1964, NBC signed a five-year contract to televise the AFL. NBC was awarded the AFC package in 1970, an association that would continue through the 1997-98 season. NBC televised the first Super Bowl in 1967, the historic New York Jets’ upset of the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III in 1969, and this past February broadcast Super Bowl XLIII, the most-watched program in television history.

MLB Network’s Bob Costas to Host Q&A with Jim Bouton on August 23

August 20, 2009 By admin

MLB NETWORK’S BOB COSTAS TO HOST Q&A WITH FORMER MLB PITCHER & BALL FOUR AUTHOR JIM BOUTON ON AUGUST 23

Interview to discuss Bouton’s MLB career and his memoir Ball Four

August 20, 2009 – MLB Network’s Studio 42 with Bob Costas will host a conversation with former Major League pitcher and author Jim Bouton on Sunday, August 23 at 8:00 p.m. ET on MLB Network. Throughout the interview, Bouton discusses his MLB career as well as his relationship with Mickey Mantle, his reason for writing the controversial memoir Ball Four, the reception the book received and what led to his return to Yankee Stadium for Old Timers’ Day in 1998.

Highlights of the interview include:

ON WHY BOUTON WROTE BALL FOUR

I really wanted to share the fun in baseball. That was my purpose for writing it. It wasn’t really a tell-all book. I didn’t have racial comments, all the sexy stories are anonymous. It really was a great environment to be part of, a Major League Baseball team. I got lucky, I was with the right bunch of guys and I kept good notes.

ON WHY BALL FOUR CONNECTED WITH PEOPLE IN 1970

It was a time in our history where people were questioning things, questioning authority, doing things in different ways. You had the Vietnam War, you had men landing on the moon that year, and it [the Seattle Pilots] was a wonderful team. It was an expansion team, the Seattle Pilots. These guys were getting to know each other because they haven’t played with each other. They were always telling stories about their careers and I was sitting there with my notepad.

ON THE WAY MICKEY MANTLE IS DEPICTED IN BALL FOUR

I don’t think it makes Mickey Mantle look bad at all. He hit a home run with a hangover. It was more a story about what a great ball player he was than about what an awful thing it was.

ON RETURNING TO YANKEE STADIUM FOR OLD TIMERS’ DAY IN 1998

I got into the clubhouse and the players were great. It was a really good feeling. I spent so much time in the clubhouse that I got onto the field late. I didn’t get a chance to run around the field and get that feeling. But it was some day.

Prior to the interview, MLB Network will re-air episodes of Studio 42 with Bob Costas featuring Major League Baseball umpires Don Denkinger, Bruce Froemming and Steve Palermo at 3:00 p.m. ET and Cal Ripken Jr. at 4:00 p.m.

2009-10 SEC Men’s College Basketball Network Telecast Schedule

August 20, 2009 By admin

2009-10 SEC Men’s College Basketball Network Telecast Schedule

102 Games – Most Ever for the Conference on the ESPN Networks

The 2009-10 Southeastern Conference (SEC) men’s college basketball schedule across ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN360.com and the ESPN Regional Television syndication package (the SEC Network) will feature 91 regular-season and 11 SEC Tournament games. The 102 total telecasts is the most ever for the conference on the ESPN networks.

The increase in games is the result of ESPN’s landmark 15-year agreement – the longest national rights agreement in ESPN history – with the SEC, resulting in an ESPN entity televising every conference home men’s basketball game (excluding those on the broadcast network package).

An extensive schedule of non-conference contests featuring an SEC team will be announced later. A network breakdown of conference action includes:

  • ESPN and ESPN2 will offer 27 conference matchups, more than double last year’s 13 telecasts. The return of the SEC to ESPN’s Super Tuesday and the addition of consistent SEC slots on Thursday and Saturday highlight the increased schedule. ESPN360.com will simulcast every ESPN and ESPN2 telecast.
  • ESPNU will televise eight conference games exclusively, after having just one last year.
  • ESPN Regional Television (ERT) takes over the rights to SEC syndication and will produce and syndicate 37 conference games throughout SEC territories and beyond. As with ERT’s football syndication, the basketball package within the nine-state SEC footprint will be branded as the SEC Network. In addition to syndication on the SEC Network, ERT will sublicense 19 games as part of regional cable packages with Fox Sports Net (FSN) and Comcast (CSS). The syndication schedule will consist of Wednesday and Saturday games, including doubleheaders.
  • The SEC Network will also offer regional coverage of multiple rounds from the SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament while ABC will televise the semifinals and championship.
  • ESPN FULL COURT, ESPN’s out-of-market college basketball pay-per-view service, will offer the majority of SEC Network, FSN and CSS games outside the local territory of each telecast. ESPN360.com will simulcast the FULL COURT games.
