FC Dallas at D.C. United Friday at 7:30 p.m. ET; New England Revolution at Los Angeles Galaxy Saturday at 11 p.m. ET

“With explosive MVP Dwayne De Rosario in their ranks, they could spark into life on Friday, and light up RFK Stadium.” – Arlo White on D.C. United

“They continue to heat up game by game.” – Martino on L.A. Galaxy

NEW YORK –March 28, 2012 –NBC Sports Network’s coverage of Major League Soccer continues with two primetime games this week: Friday at 7:30 p.m. ET, D.C. United hosts FC Dallas and Saturday at 11 p.m. ET, L.A. Galaxy hosts the New England Revolution.

COMMENTATORS: The NBC Sports Group MLS announce team of Arlo White (@arlowhite, play-by-play), and Kyle Martino (@kylemartino, “Between the Benches” analyst) will call both Friday night and Saturday night games. NBC SportsTalk host Russ Thaler (@RussThaler) will host the pre-game, halftime and post-game segments on Friday live from RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C., while NBC Sports Network’s Paul Burmeister hosts the coverage on Saturday from The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.

WHITE AND MARTINO BREAK DOWN THE MATCHUPS:

WHITE ON D.C.UNITED VS. FC DALLAS: “Dallas will be one of the premier teams in the tough Western Conference when they get back to full strength. Brazilian Ricardo Villar has covered for the injured David Ferreira brilliantly so far, scoring two fantastic goals. Striker Blas Perez has been involved in every goal Dallas has scored this season. He’s hot! Ben Olsen’s D.C. United are desperate for a win. Once the power of MLS, the club has fallen on hard times recently, but with explosive MVP Dwayne De Rosario in their ranks, they could spark into life on Friday, and light up RFK Stadium.”

MARTINO ON L.A. GALAXY VS. REVOLUTION: “Although they were without their ideal starting 11 the Revs were able to record their first win of the season last game against Portland. Hopefully there is room in the overhead compartment for that confidence as they make the cross-country flight to take on a dangerously talented L.A. team. A few bumps early are well in the Galaxy’s rearview as they continue to heat up game by game.”

NBC Sports Group’s MLS Coverage Continues Friday With Houston Dynamo At Seattle Sounders

NBC Sports Network Coverage Starts at 10 p.m. ET

“If you are new to MLS, the scene at CenturyLink Field on Friday will blow your mind.” – Arlo White

NEW YORK –March 21, 2012 –The NBC Sports Group’s MLS season coverage continues Friday at 10 p.m. ET on the NBC Sports Network when the Seattle Sounders host the Houston Dynamo. The Dynamo have opened the season with two straight wins, while the Sounders scored a 3-1 victory on Saturday against Toronto FC in their MLS season opener, with forward David Estrada scoring the club’s third hat trick in its history.

COMMENTATORS: The team of Arlo White (@arlowhite, play-by-play), and Kyle Martino (@kylemartino, “Between the Benches” analyst) will call the game from CenturyLink Field in Seattle, Wash. NBC SportsTalk host Russ Thaler (@RussThaler) will host the pre-game, halftime and post-game segments live from the game site, with White and Martino.

White and Martino have received praise for their work this season. Soccer America said White is “one of the best MLS commentators around” and called Martino, “NBC’s insider analyst, not simply a guy with a mike.” Additionally, The Tampa Times said NBC Sports Network’s coverage, “looked great and sounded even better with Kyle Martino between the benches, just like you might see on NBC’s hockey coverage.”

WHITE AND MARTINO BREAK DOWN THE MATCHUP:

WHITE: “If you are new to MLS, the scene at CenturyLink Field on Friday will blow your mind. 38,000 fanatics create a wall of noise and a sea of ‘rave’ green. Striker David Estrada is their new hero after scoring a hat-trick last week and with Fredy Montero, Mauro Rosales and Alvaro Fernandez marauding forward, they are built to score goals. Houston was beaten by the LA Galaxy in last year’s MLS Cup and I think Brad Davis could open a can of baked beans with that wonderful left foot of his.”

MARTINO: “Opening up a season with a long string of road games is the toughest challenge MLS has to offer. Like many MLS teams before them, Houston is now facing that very situation with seven consecutive away games before they return home to open up at BBVA Compass Stadium. They are already off to a better start than most with two wins in a row against teams from the stacked Western Conference. However, this weekend their resolve will be put to the test when they face a very talented Seattle squad who are playing angry after being dropkicked out of CONCACAF Champions League.”

Bob Costas On NBC Sportstalk On Saints Discipline

NBC Sports Network

March 21, 2012

On how the NFL handled the situation

I want to stand up and cheer for Roger Goodell.

Now, the penalty to the players, which may be a little trickier because he may face some resistance from the Players Association; but the penalty for the players will be forthcoming, we are led to believe in about a week, and I think they will also be appropriately severe.

He has made an important statement today. And anyone who thinks that the Saints are scapegoats because of the present atmosphere in the NFL, maybe their timing was off, but they deserve every bit of this. They are blatantly guilty of something that has no place whatsoever in sports.

And it goes beyond the idea of bounties. If people interpret this as, ‘well no one will ever have any bounties any more’ at least not anything that can be traced; Roger Goodell is sending a message about the culture of the game, about the celebration of a kind of violence, a kind of brutality that goes above and beyond anything that reasonable people should accept.

It’s understood within football, whether there are bounties or not, that many players, not all, maybe not most, that many players are either indifferent to whether or not they injure opponents or actually take pride and glee in injuring opponents. There is no question about it. It’s not isolated to the New Orleans Saints.

The NFL as it is presently constituted is a great, great game that is exciting in many ways and interesting in many ways, and is clearly America’s most popular sport. It also has a serious problem because it is fundamentally brutal in a way that reasonable people should no longer accept.

And Roger Goodell is trying to deal with that both, a) because it’s the right thing to do, and I believe he is a good man, but b) because he is also a business man and he knows that with all this litigation out there, and more coming, he’s got to position the league as standing as reasonably as it can against excessive and gratuitous violence.

On if another team is found guilty of similar actions

Screw them – same thing. Hit them with the same thing.

On benchmarks being set

… if what the next team did was worse, then make the penalty worse. If what the next team did is half as bad, then make the penalty half as bad. But he has established a benchmark.

Nobody should be allowed to get away with this.

Bob Costas appeared on NBC SportsTalk on NBC Sports Network to discuss the discipline levied against the New Orleans Saints

NEW YORK – March 5, 2012 – Kyle Martino (@kylemartino) will be the lead analyst for the NBC Sports Group’s coverage of Major League Soccer (MLS), teaming with play-by-play voice Arlo White (@arlowhite), it was announced today. Martino and White make their debut on Sunday, March 11, at 3 p.m. ET on the NBC Sports Network as FC Dallas hosts the New York Red Bulls. In addition, Robbie Earle, an analyst for the MLS Portland Timbers will serve as a pre-game, halftime, post-game and game analyst throughout the season.

Taking a page from NBC Sports Group’s hockey coverage, which employs an “Inside the Glass” analyst, Martino will be stationed “Between the Benches” during the games with White in the broadcast booth. From this vantage point, Martino will provide the fans with unique field level insight in addition to game analysis.

Martino, who spent seven seasons as a midfielder for the Columbus Crew and LA Galaxy, and was a member of the U.S. National Team, was most recently the lead analyst for Fox Soccer’s broadcasts of MLS and U.S. National Team games, in addition to serving as the color commentator for Philadelphia Union games in 2010. Prior to that, Martino served as an analyst for MLS on ESPN2.

“I am very excited to be joining a company with such a rich sports history,” said Martino. “To be a part of that tradition by covering Major League Soccer is a tremendous honor. I look forward to being a part of the NBC Sports Group team.”

Pierre Moossa, a 10-time Emmy Award-winner and a 13-year veteran of NBC Sports, will serve as the coordinating producer and director of NBC Sports Group’s MLS coverage. Moossa most recently served as one of the production leaders of NBC Sports’ Emmy Award-winning Sunday Night Football.

“When we first obtained the MLS rights last year, we identified Kyle as an analyst we’d like to be a part of our broadcasts,” said Moossa. “Teaming him with Arlo White gives us two premier soccer announcers that fans will thoroughly enjoy. With the addition of Robbie Earle, we have added another exceptional soccer commentator to our team.”

A native of Westport, Conn., Martino played at the University of Virginia before being drafted in the first round by the Columbus Crew in 2002. That year he played in 22 games and won the MLS Rookie of the Year award. Martino went on to play in 141 MLS games and tallied 14 goals. Additionally, Martino played eight games with the U.S. National Team and scored a goal against Panama in a key World Cup qualifying win in October 2005.

Earle, a former member of the Jamaican National Team, played 19 years professionally in England including 10 years with Wimbledon of the Premier League. He is currently the lead analyst for the MLS Portland Timbers. The Timbers have allowed him to work on the NBC Sports Network’s MLS coverage as a pre-game, halftime, post-game and game analyst throughout the season.

“Costas Tonight” One-Hour Interview Show Premieres On NBC Sports Network

Bob Costas Interviews NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, NBA Commissioner David Stern and WBC Welterweight Boxing Champion Floyd Mayweather

FULL VIDEO CLIP BELOW: MAYWEATHER DISCUSSES POSSIBILITY OF FIGHT WITH MANNY PACQUIAO

“This is a serious issue. We have medical experts working with us. We’re trying to educate the players.” Bettman on Concussions

“It is a frenzy on a global scale.” –Stern on Jeremy Lin

60-Minute Interview Show from Studio 8G at 30 Rock is First of New Series

New York – February 29, 2012 – Bob Costas, a 22-time Emmy Award-winning journalist and one of America’s preeminent interviewers, premieres his 60-minute interview show Costas Tonight tomorrow 8-9 p.m. ET on the NBC Sports Network.

In his first edition of Costas Tonight, which originates from Studio 8G at 30 Rockefeller Plaza and was taped yesterday, Costas discussed the key topics in the NHL with Commissioner Gary Bettman, and the state of the NBA, including the Jeremy Lin phenomenon, with Commissioner David Stern.

Costas also sat down with the controversial, five-division world champion, current WBC Welterweight Champion and undefeated 42-0 professional boxer, Floyd Mayweather and discussed, among other topics, preparations for his May 5 bout against world class fighter Miguel Cotto, the tumultuous relationship with his father, and if there is a chance for a fight with WBO Welterweight Champion Manny Pacquiao.

MAYWEATHER ON HIS UPCOMING FIGHT WITH MIGUEL COTTO:“He’s a champion. He’s a guy that I can’t overlook, coming from a Puerto Rican boxing background and me coming from an American boxing family. He poses a threat but it’s a good matchup.”MAYWEATHER ON GAMBLING: “I’m just about entertainment, you know having personality, being outgoing, being outspoken and, when the gloves are off, I’m just at home on an everyday basis betting on basketball, betting on football. (Tuesday) I placed a bet on Kansas (for the) first half, I bet about 100k and I won about 83k so they came through, (Wednesday) I think I’m going to bet on Duke, for the first half, just before I get on the plane to go to LA. Hopefully it’s not too hot.”

BETTMAN ON IF REMOVING FIGHTING FROM HOCKEY WOULD ALIENATE FANS: “There are those who say if we eliminate it, there are people who aren’t fans who would become fans because they are turned off on it. It is one of the great imponderables.”

BETTMAN ON CONCUSSIONS IN HOCKEY: “We don’t want the head targeted as the principal point of contact, and we actually passed a rule that went into effect this season that prohibits such a hit, but there are a lot of hits in our game. It’s a very physical game where the head is incidentally a point of contact… this is a serious issue. We have medical experts working with us. We’re trying to educate the players. Perhaps the most important thing we’ve done is we are trying to change the culture of the game, where if a guy gets, as they used to say, dinged, it’s ok for a guy to say, ‘I think I have concussion-like symptoms’ and get treatment.”

BETTMAN ON THE BEST THING HE LEARNED FROM STERN WHEN HE WAS AT THE NBA: “I don’t think you can just point to one thing, because it was 12 spectacular years in terms of my professional life. But in terms of doing the right thing, working hard and focusing on what needs to be taken care of, learning how to prioritize, and also managing owners because David has always been extraordinary at that.”

STERN ON SOCIAL MEDIA IN SPORTS TODAY: “I often say and have said that Russell and Chamberlain labored in anonymity compared to today’s athletes.”

STERN ON JEREMY LIN PHENOMENON: “It is a frenzy on a global scale. Jeremy Lin is taking it to another layer on a global scale.”

STERN ON WHETHER HE SOUGHT ADVICE FROM BETTMAN DURING NBA LOCKOUT: “I think it is fair to say that we talk to each other regularly and have a wide range of discussions on relevant topics.”

BETTMAN AND STERN REACTING TO COMMENTS MADE BY BRYANT GUMBEL DURING NBA LOCKOUT ON HBO. GUMBEL SAID: “(Stern) has always seemed eager to be viewed as some kind of modern plantation overseer, treating NBA men as if they were his boys.”

Bettman: “Let me answer first, because I worked with David for over 12 years. That is probably the most ignorant, stupid statement I’ve ever heard. Anybody who knows David knows that nothing could be further from the truth.”

Stern: “Thank you, friend Gary. I actually, you know, sort of enjoyed it to a degree because the flood of phone calls that I got from a very diverse community said ‘What is this guy’s problem?’ And I said, ‘His ratings are going down, it’s a slow news day, he wants some headlines.’ And I wouldn’t say anything publicly, it was taken care of by Charles Barkley and Jesse Jackson.”

Re-Air Dates (All times ET):
