In the TBS broadcast booth, Ernie Johnson will call the action alongside analyst John Smoltz.
The 2013 MLB Postseason will begin Tuesday, Oct. 1, on TBS. The network’s extensive coverage will include both Wild Card Games, up to 18 MLB Division Series games and the exclusive presentation of the National League Championship Series. TBS MLB analysts Ron Darling and Smoltz share insights on the final stretch of the regular season and look ahead at the postseason:
Ron Darling’s Top Storylines Down the Stretch
“Keep an eye on the Washington Nationals. They are trying to finish their season like the Colorado Rockies did in 2007 [who won 15 of their last 16 games] to make the postseason.”
“Atlanta Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman is the MVP of the National League.”
“Former Boston manager Terry Francona [current Cleveland Indians manager] and current Red Sox manager John Farrell are the two front runners for American League Manager of the Year.”
“The Oakland A’s are the most unique franchise in sports. They are poised to make the postseason again without the hype…just win baby!”
MLB on TBS Quotes of Note
John Smoltz on…
- …Tigers starting pitcher Justin Verlander: “I think he’s holding back a little bit for the postseason which he desperately wants to complete as one of the most dominant pitchers of his era. He’s going to have some gas in the tank when the Tigers make a run at the World Series.”
- …wanting to control his own destiny in the pennant race: “As a player, I always wanted the opportunity to pitch against the team that I had to beat and control my destiny versus rooting for other teams to do something to help.”
- …Tigers reliever Drew Smyly’s value to his team: “He has been their most valuable pitcher. When you think about [the Tigers’] bullpen issues…he’s closed some games, given them some depth and he’s going to be a bona fide starter in the future. Out of the bullpen, he’s really saved the Tigers so far.”
