Segments include:
*Black in Bellaire. Robbie Tolan dreamed of following in the footsteps of his father, retired Major League Baseball outfielder Bobby Tolan. But in the early morning of Dec. 31, 2008, those dreams may have ended in a confrontation with police in affluent, predominantly white Bellaire, Tex. Wrongly suspected of stealing his own car, Tolan and his cousin were detained at gunpoint by police on the doorstep of his family’s home. A moment later, Robbie Tolan’s parents watched as their son was shot in the chest by a police officer. Host Bryant Gumbel examines this disturbing case and interviews the Tolan family as they speak out for the first time about race and the night that changed everything.
Producer: David Scott.
*Bode’s World. With the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver drawing near, U.S. ski fans are starting to wonder what to expect from skiing superstar Bode Miller – or if they should expect anything at all. Arguably the most talented American skier ever, Miller has proven himself a winner time and time again, but he’s always done it on his own terms. Now, still smarting over the way he was treated by the media and U.S. ski authorities after his disastrous performance in the 2006 Torino Olympics, Miller sits down with correspondent Jon Frankel in this REAL SPORTS/Sports Illustrated profile to discuss his reasons for leaving the U.S. Ski Team to compete as an independent, and explain why he doubts he’ll be competing in next year’s Winter Games.
Producer: Amani Martin.
*Total Recall. She is forever linked to the most bizarre scandal in skating history. Mention the name Tonya Harding and almost anyone over age 25 will have total recall of the events that overshadowed the 1994 Lillehammer Olympic Games. Just weeks before the Games, Harding’s ex-husband Jeff Gillooly and two associates conspired to remove her chief rival, Nancy Kerrigan, from competition in the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. Though Harding denied involvement in the infamous assault on Kerrigan, her life was never the same again. Now, 15 years after the sordid incident that has defined her life, Harding sits down with correspondent Bernard Goldberg for an exclusive one-on-one conversation.
Producer: Joe Perskie.
