On Bernhard Langer, 2017 Senior Open champion at 4-under par (1-over 72 on Sunday)
Rich Lerner – “His friends back home in South Florida call him Bernie, easy-going and friendly. But out here he is Bernhard Langer. Relentless, dominant. As fit and focused at almost 60 as he was at 30. Year after year, tournament after tournament, Sunday after Sunday, always it seems to be ‘Weekend at Bernie’s.’
Lanny Wadkins – “This is one of the great performances by Bernhard Langer. Again.”
Wadkins – “He is focused. Always prepared and always ready to play.”
Wadkins – He knows how to win on the golf course. He has done what he had to do today because nobody made a run at him. “It wasn’t pretty but he did what he needed to.”
On Corey Pavin, 2nd place at 1-under par (even-par 71 on Sunday)
Wadkins – What a great way to finish to get under par for the championship.”
Billy Ray Brown – “He’s didn’t give up today. That’s for sure.”
Billy Andrade, T3 at even par (3-under 68 on Sunday) speaking with NBC’s Todd Lewis following his round
Billy Andrade – “I knew I was in the mix. I saw that I was close at 8, and after I birdied 8 I knew I was up there. I was just going along, trying not to make any mistakes and see if I could make a few more birdies. My goal was to try to get in with a couple-under and put some pressure on Bernhard. All in all, it was a great week. This is an unbelievable golf course. It is beautiful, and I am looking forward to coming back here in a few years. This is quite a place. If anyone has a chance to come here and play, this should be on your bucket list.”
On Peter Lonard, T3 at even par (even-par 71 on Sunday)
John Mahaffey – “He has not had any luck with the putter today at all.”
Lanny Wadkins – “That has been his weakness all day.”
Fred Couples, T3 at even par (3-under par 68 on Sunday)
Wadkins – “Good tournament for Fred. Start of the week, I thought even par would do it.”
Wadkins – “His round today was outstanding.
Fred Couples speaking with NBC’s Todd Lewis following his round
Fred Couples – “Yesterday was a lot easier coming off of Friday. I hit the ball well and I ran out of here after 3-putting 18, almost for a 65. Today was really hard, plus we teed off a lot earlier. Going early was different today, it was cold and windy. But the first two days – they were not the hardest rounds of golf I have ever played – they are in the top-10. It is a very hard course. For Bernhard to have a lead and make very few mistakes is a great round of golf. For me, I was just freeloading and trying a couple of things, not that you could get the ball close to the hole. I birdied all three par-5s and that is what I shot.”
Couples – “He [Bernhard Langer] is a hard worker. He is right there and that is why he is so good. He hits the ball very solid and is very clutch. When you start winning a lot, it does become easier, but not winning majors. This golf course – what did he did last time he was here, he won by 13. That was unreal and to win again in these conditions just shows you that he is a very, very tough competitor. He really doesn’t give shots away. He plays the course, and if 73 is the best that he is going to do, 73 is what he is going to get. Yesterday was a great score that he shot and today he is playing great golf.
