►THE NFL ON CBS lead analyst Phil Simms on the possibility of expanding the schedule to 18 games during CBS Sports’ pre-season game, Dallas vs. Houston, on Saturday night.
SIMMS: I think it’s a game where you slowly indoctrinate yourself in to the hitting and all the punishment that comes with it. So it’s a little bit the first game; a little more and a little more. You don’t go into boxing, hey my first professional fight I’m taking on Mike Tyson. I’m ready for the real thing. You don’t do that. You slowly work your way into it. I think it’s going to hurt the players if they change it drastically.
►On whether Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan handled Albert Haynesworth the right way or the wrong way
SIMMS: Looking at it right now, it worked out perfect. He played the other night. It looked like he played hard. He started.
GUS JOHNSON: He said he didn’t want to play in a 3-4 (defense). Now he’s playing in a 3-4.
SIMMS: Well, they’re paying him a lot of money. It came down to, okay, do you want the money or not? He’s coming to play. He’s got pride. You can’t be that good of a player if you don’t have pride. So when he gets in there, he’s going to get it done. Mike Shanahan sent a message to his football team that he was in charge. He controlled it the right way as a head coach. And I think the team is all sitting around saying, ‘Way to go Coach.’ Players want everyone to play under the same rules.
Simms made his predictions for the upcoming NFL season during CBS Sports’ pre-season game, Dallas vs. Houston, on Saturday night.
