“Two of the toughest defensive teams I’ve seen in a while in the Western Conference.” – Patrick Sharp on Golden Knights-Stars Series

STAMFORD, Conn. – Sept. 11, 2020 – NBC Sports presents exclusive coverage of three Stanley Cup Conference Final matchups this weekend, beginning with the Tampa Bay Lightning playing the New York Islanders, holding a 2-0 series advantage, tonight at 8 p.m. ET on USA Network. On Wednesday, Nikita Kucherov netted the game-winner with only nine seconds left to give the Lightning a 2-1 victory.

John Forslund (play-by-play), U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame member Eddie Olczyk (analyst) and Brian Boucher (‘Inside-the-Glass’ analyst) will call Lightning-Islanders Game 3 from Rogers Place in the NHL bubble in Edmonton, Alberta. Kathryn Tappen will host tonight’s studio coverage alongside studio analysts Anson Carter and Patrick Sharp.

Game 4 of the Western Conference Final between the Vegas Golden Knights and Dallas Stars will be presented tomorrow at 8 p.m. ET on NBC. In last night’s affair, Alexander Radulov scored the game-winning goal 31 seconds into overtime to give Dallas the 3-2 victory and a 2-1 series lead.

Forslund, Olczyk and ‘Inside-the-Glass’ analyst Pierre McGuire will have the call of Vegas-Dallas in Edmonton.

On Sunday, the Lightning and Islanders will face off in Game 4 at 3 p.m. ET on NBC. Eight-time Emmy Award-winner Mike ‘Doc’ Emrick will handle play-by-play duties alongside Olczyk and Boucher.

Earlier this week, Hockey Culture debuted an interview with Arcadia University head coach Kelsey Koelzer, the first black female head coach in NCAA hockey history. Koelzer and Carter discussed her childhood experiences playing hockey, thoughts on how to increase inclusivity in the sport and the importance of female voices within all levels of hockey. Highlighted quotes from the conversation are below:

Kelsey Koelzer on biases she encountered growing up playing hockey: “The first obstacle that I ever faced in hockey was being a girl as opposed to being a black player. So that’s something that I faced right off the bat, whether it was parents, players or coaches. I did feel, at times, targeting that girls will feel on the ice playing against the boys…getting through the negative comments of ‘being a girl playing a boy sport’ helped me because by the time that I faced ‘being black in a white sport,’ I was really prepared and had such thick skin that nothing was going to stop me from reaching my goals.”

Koelzer on how to increase inclusivity within the sport: “Once you get to the top level of NHL and women’s professional hockey, it’s a little too late at that point. I really think there’s a huge importance to be put on grassroots level activations…I think the NHL has made a great start in trying to expose the game to as many different people as possible…there are a lot of programs, but a lot of it stems from exposure to the younger generation.”

Koelzer on the importance of female voices in hockey: “Being a female and minority player, you know I’ve had to endure a lot to get to where I am…I can hang with the best of them…that on top of the accomplishments on the ice, being humble and still learn, take in, offer different viewpoints, is something unique that you can get from a female voice.”

Hockey Culture also features, among others, the following interviews:

  • Vegas Golden Knights forward Ryan Reaves
  • Hockey Night in Canada: Punjabi commentator Harnarayan Singh
  • Edmonton Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse
  • Minnesota Wild forward J.T. Brown

Following is this weekend’s Stanley Cup Conference Final schedule:

Date Coverage Network Time (ET) Commentators
Fri., Sept. 11 Game 3 – (2) Tampa Bay vs. (6) N.Y. Islanders USA Network 8 p.m. John Forslund, Eddie Olczyk, Brian Boucher
Sat. Sept. 12 Game 4 – (1) Vegas vs. (3) Dallas NBC 8 p.m. John Forslund, Eddie Olczyk, Pierre McGuire
Sun., Sept 13 Game 4 – (2) Tampa Bay vs. (6) N.Y. Islanders NBC 3 p.m. Mike ‘Doc’ Emrick, Eddie Olczyk, Brian Boucher

KEITH JONES AND PATRICK SHARP DISCUSS GOLDEN KNIGHTS-STARS GAME 3

Following last night’s 3-2 overtime victory for the Dallas Stars over the Vegas Golden Knights in Game 3, studio analysts Keith Jones and Patrick Sharp discussed the matchup and series:

Sharp on the series: “It’s not about scoring goals for these two teams. It’s about how well they check and defend. The goals will come. Two of the toughest defensive teams I’ve seen in a while in the Western Conference.”

Jones on Alexander Radulov’s game winning goal: “It was a great shot. He got (Robin) Lehner to lean down a little bit, and then he put it right off the goalpost. It’s an incredible goal by Radulov and he continues to make big plays, it’s his second overtime winner in the playoffs and a big reason why Dallas is leading in this series.”

Sharp on Jamie Benn: “He’s a playmaker, never rushes with the puck, always makes the right play when it’s on his stick…Jamie Benn was the best Dallas Star not named Anton Khudobin.”

Koelzer on how to increase inclusivity within the sport: “Once you get to the top level of NHL and women’s professional hockey, it’s a little too late at that point. KEITH JONES AND ANSON CARTER DISCUSS LIGHTNING-ISLANDERS GAME 2

Following last night’s thrilling 2-1 Tampa Bay Lightning victory in the final seconds over the New York Islanders in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Final, studio analysts Keith Jones and Anson Carter discussed the matchup:

Jones on Tampa Bay’s victory: “It’s a gutsy win for the Tampa Bay Lightning…anytime you win a playoff game it’s huge, but when your team steps up and a lot of guys do a lot of work based on the number of bodies you have left in the lineup, that’s a gigantic win for Tampa.”

Carter on the Islanders’ performance in Game 2: “That’s the recipe for the New York Islanders. That’s exactly how they have to play to beat this Tampa Bay Lightning team. Their fourth line, getting on the body consistently for 60 minutes, they just couldn’t weather the storm…they have to get something done on the power play.”

ANSON CARTER AND PATRICK SHARP ON GOLDEN KNIGHTS-STARS GAME 2

Following last night’s 3-0 Vegas Golden Knights shutout victory over the Dallas Stars in Game 2 of the Western Conference Final to tie the series 1-1, studio analysts Anson Carter and Patrick Sharp provided insight on Vegas’ performance:

Sharp on Vegas’ win in Game 2: “They answered a lot of questions, didn’t they? A lot of talk about them not being able to score goals, get to the Dallas net and the crease, well, that got answered pretty quickly. Give me a team that checks like Vegas and the goals will come…the way this team defends and smothers you in the offensive zone, it’s impressive to watch.”

Carter on Paul Stastny’s performance in Game 2: “He’s so underrated. We always talk about Mark Stone and William Karlsson, but Paul Stastny adds a lot of bounce to the Vegas Golden Knights offense…he can play anywhere and anytime on the ice and having a player with that versatility is very important.”

KEITH JONES AND PATRICK SHARP PREVIEW LIGHTNING-ISLANDERS GAME 2

Following last night’s 8-2 Tampa Bay Lightning victory over the New York Islanders in Game 1, studio analysts Keith Jones and Patrick Sharp reflected on the Game 1 performance and previewed Game 2:

Sharp on Game 1: “I know a loss is a loss in the playoffs, whether it’s a 1-0 overtime (loss) or it’s 8-2, but this was an 8-2 loss. That’s embarrassing, it should get your attention. I think it will, and the Islanders bounce back in Game 2 and play a much better game. The question is, they have the Tampa Bay Lightning across the way, how are you going to stop that offense?”

Jones on the Islanders’ goalie situation heading into Game 2: “I think you go back to Thomas Greiss and give him another shot. This game was so disappointing from an Islanders standpoint that I don’t know how much you can pin on the goaltender, how much credit do you give to the offensive players on the Lightning, and how much could the goalies have done to make the game closer?…I think they got lit up by a team that was just feeling it.”

In his first Stanley Cup Playoff start, Thatcher Demko recorded 42 saves to help the Canucks fight off elimination and defeat the Golden Knights 2-1 in Game 5 on Tuesday night. With a win, Vegas would advance to the Western Conference Final for the second time in its three-season history, while the Canucks would force a Game 7.

John Forslund (play-by-play), Keith Jones (analyst) and Brian Boucher (‘Inside-the-Glass’ analyst) will call Islanders-Flyers. In the nightcap, Kenny Albert (play-by-play) and Pierre McGuire (‘Inside-the-Glass’ analyst) will have the call of Golden Knights-Canucks from Rogers Place in the NHL bubble in Edmonton, Alberta.

Liam McHugh will host tonight’s studio coverage alongside studio analysts Keith Jones and Anson Carter.

Earlier this week, Hockey Culture released an interview with Hockey Night in Canada: Punjabi commentator Harnarayan Singh as part of the initiative, led by Carter, dedicated to bringing equality and inclusion to the sport of hockey. Among the topics that Singh and Carter discussed were Singh’s Sikh and Canadian heritage and fighting prejudice to pursue his dream job as a hockey commentator. Highlighted quotes from the conversation are below:

Harnarayan Singh on hockey’s impact growing up as a kid in Alberta: “It became a conversation starter. I don’t think I knew it at the time, but eventually…all my relationships and rapport with my teachers and classmates, I really feel that my situation would have been drastically different had it not been for the game of hockey.”

Singh on his dream job of becoming a hockey commentator: “I told people this was my dream…as I grew up, there were so many different situations where people would caution me and say ‘Harnarayan, you have to be realistic, nobody looks like you on TV, the chances of you getting on TV are so slim’…I’m so grateful and I feel so blessed and lucky to say that it happened for me. Despite a ton of obstacles and what I went through in childhood in terms of racism and bullying, I also received a lot of support.”

Singh on recent efforts to promote inclusion in the sport of hockey: “Everything matters and it is so important to relay the message that we are all one. Humanity is together. It doesn’t matter how we look on the outside, on the inside, we’re all the same species.”

Hockey Culture also currently features the following interviews:

  • Vegas Golden Knights forward Ryan Reaves
