HOCKEY CULTURE SEASON TWO

Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Zach Whitecloud, the NHL’s first indigenous player from the Sioux Valley Dakota Nation, joined NHL on NBC analyst Anson Carter for a conversation about his background, his journey in professional hockey to becoming a member of the Golden Knights, and indigenous players in the NHL that served as role models to him, on the latest episode of NBC Sports’ Hockey Culture.

The conversation is available now on Hockey Culture’s dedicated YouTube Channel and below are highlights:

Whitecloud on the role that the Sioux Valley Dakota Nation played in his hockey career: “I get emotional thinking about it because we didn’t come from a lot of money and my parents did everything to keep me in sports and make sure that I was doing something that I loved. So for them to reach out to Sioux Valley for help and have that financial stability, I’m very grateful to Sioux Valley for supporting me.”

Whitecloud on his decision to join the Golden Knights as an undrafted free agent: “Vegas laid out a plan for me to develop, go into the minor league system, get experience, get reps and become the player they thought I could be…Vegas is an incredible city and after that first year, they’ve created a culture here that I wanted to be a part of.”

HOCKEY CULTURE SEASON TWO

Four-time Olympic hockey medalist Julie Chu, the first Asian-American woman to play for Team USA at an Olympic Games, joined NHL on NBC analyst Anson Carter for a conversation about her childhood playing hockey, her experiences representing Team USA in Olympics, her new career in hockey coaching, and the recent increase in anti-Asian violence, on the latest episode of NBC Sports’ Hockey Culture.

The conversation is available now on Hockey Culture’s dedicated YouTube Channel and below are highlights:

Chu on the recent rise in hate crimes in the country: “What’s been most disheartening to see is the divide…the divide has created hatred versus trying to understand each other better and see the differences we have that we can celebrate…what’s the solution to that? Having conversations like this, being proactive on our platforms, getting to our younger generations and encouraging them to have courageous conversations.”

Chu on the power of the Olympic Games: “The Olympics brings people from all different walks of life, cultures, nations and sports together to celebrate how we are more alike than we are different.”

Chu on her coaching mentality: “We do a lot of hockey — we love hockey — but we always kick off every individual session with ‘how are you?’…because you have to check in with the person first. We have to be in a good place before we can give to everyone around us or give our best.”

HOCKEY CULTURE SEASON TWO

Hershey Bears video coach Emily Engel-Natzke, the first female coach in the Washington Capitals organization, joined NHL on NBC analyst Anson Carter for a conversation about her journey from playing hockey to working within the sport, the day-to-day tasks of a hockey video coach and her love for working in hockey coaching, on the latest episode of NBC Sports’ Hockey Culture.

The conversation is available now on Hockey Culture’s dedicated YouTube Channel and below are highlights:

Engel-Natzke on what she experienced growing up as a woman in the sport of hockey: “There might be some added pressure because you are the only girl or woman. More eyes are on you…there’s an underlying pressure to prove people wrong.”

Engel-Natzke on her love for her job: “If you remember how lucky and fortunate you are to love what you do, for me to watch hockey for a living, it’s a good reflection point and something to always keep in the back of your mind…I still don’t feel like I’m working.”

Engel-Natzke on video’s impact within hockey coaching and scouting: “The use of video has increased and I see it becoming more important as technology gets better. I think you’ll see that need and want for information…there’s definitely value in seeing things, rather than just hearing it from a coach.”

HOCKEY CULTURE SEASON TWO

Artist Terry Smith, designer of the original San Jose Sharks logo, joined NHL on NBC analyst Anson Carter for a conversation about the intersection of art and sports, the impact of innovative designs on the NHL over the years and his recent work with Bauer in designing commemorative Willie O’Ree skates, on the latest episode of NBC Sports’ Hockey Culture.

The conversation is available now on Hockey Culture’s dedicated YouTube Channel and below are highlights:

Smith on his intended impact in art and sports: “One of the things I’m hoping is I want people — black, brown — to know there’s opportunity off the field…instead of being inspiring with my play, hopefully I’m inspiring with the art.”

Smith on his work with Bauer in designing commemorative Willie O’Ree skates: “I was looking for a way for my art to do more good, raise more awareness with everything that is going on in our world today…it became important to me that the design not only honor Willie, but also have a message…that hopefully encourages conversation…and gives players a platform to express their views, opinions and more importantly bring about greater awareness to causes they support.”

Smith’s advice he would give to aspiring artists: “Life is hard work and you have to put in the time and effort. If you do make it, it’s really important to reach back and open the door and help other people because it’s about the opportunity…people can open the door for you, but that’s all they do. After they open the door, now the hard work starts, it’s up to you.”

Fuhr on his time as a member of the Edmonton Oilers: “Nobody really realized how good we were going to be, we just went out and had fun every day. We liked being at the rink, we enjoyed each other’s company. We went out to have fun. It just happened we had a lot of success when we were having fun.”

Fuhr on the work being done on increasing diversity and inclusion in the sport of hockey: “I think there is still a lot more that we can do to get the game out in front of kids, minorities, the less fortunate, and I think the NHL plays a big part in that where we’ve got to expand the program to expose the game to kids because that’s how the game is going to grow.”
