MAYWEATHER vs. PACQUIAO EVENT SHATTERS RECORDS FOR PPV BUYS, PPV REVENUE, LIVE GATE AND MORE

Generates Combined Total Revenues In Excess of $500 Million

NEW YORK (May 12, 2015)—The boxing blockbuster event, Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao, shattered the previous record for total pay-per-view buys and now ranks as the highest-grossing pay-per-view of all time.  Initial reports from distributors indicate that the event generated more than 4.4 million U.S. buys and more than $400 million in domestic pay-per-view revenue alone.  With additional revenue from the live gate at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, international television distribution, sponsorships, closed circuit and merchandise sales, the event is expected to generate in excess of $500 million in gross worldwide receipts.  The news was announced jointly by Showtime Networks Inc., a subsidiary of CBS Corporation, and HBO in conjunction with event promoters Mayweather Promotions and Top Rank, Inc.

The welterweight world championship unification bout nearly doubled the previous record of 2.48 million buys generated by the Oscar De La Hoya vs. Floyd Mayweather boxing event in 2007 and nearly tripled the record $150 million in U.S. pay-per-view revenue generated by Mayweather vs. Canelo Alvarez in 2013.

Live gate receipts for the star-studded event at the MGM Grand Garden Arena produced more than $71 million in revenue, dramatically eclipsing the previous live gate record of $20 million (for Mayweather vs. Canelo) for both the sport of boxing and Las Vegas.

Additionally, Mayweather vs. Pacquiao set the record for closed circuit admissions and revenue both in Las Vegas and at establishments nationwide.  The event sold nearly 46,000 closed circuit admissions at MGM Resorts International properties in Las Vegas alone and was available at more than 5,000 bars, restaurants and commercial establishments throughout the U.S.

Distributed in 175 countries worldwide, Mayweather vs. Pacquiao was available in essentially 75 percent of the world’s territories, setting the revenue record for international distribution.

As reported last week, Mayweather vs. Pacquiao drew enormous numbers on social media.  For example, Facebook reported that 37 million unique people contributed more than 115 million interactions from the start of the event to 30 minutes following its completion, a new record for a boxing event.

The May 2 promotion included unprecedented marketing and cross-promotional support from distributors as well as record revenue from the event’s major sponsors.

Mayweather vs. Pacquiao was a 12-round welterweight world championship unification bout promoted by Mayweather Promotions and Top Rank Inc., and co-produced and co-distributed by HBO PPV® and SHOWTIME PPV®.

hbo-real-sportsCELEBRATING 20 AWARD-WINNING SEASONS,

REAL SPORTS WITH BRYANT GUMBEL

GOES ONE-ON-ONE WITH MICHIGAN HEAD FOOTBALL COACH JIM HARBAUGH;

PROFILES SEATTLE SEAHAWKS QUARTERBACK RUSSELL WILSON; AND

REVISITS THE DEBATE OVER CHEWING TOBACCO IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

WHEN IT RETURNS APRIL 21, EXCLUSIVELY ON HBO

REAL SPORTS WITH BRYANT GUMBEL, TV’s most honored sports journalism series, returns with more enterprising features and reporting when the show’s 217th edition debuts TUESDAY, APRIL 21 (10:00–11:00 p.m. ET/PT), exclusively on HBO.

For the up-to-the-minute updates about REAL SPORTS, follow on Twitter at @RealSportsHBO or join the conversation using #RealSports.

Segments include:

(Jim Harbaugh at The Big House with correspondent Andrea Kremer.)

*Jim Harbaugh. After his bumpy departure from the San Francisco 49ers, Jim Harbaugh left the Bay Area with many questions unanswered. Now settled in as head football coach at the University of Michigan, the 51-year-old sits down with REAL SPORTS correspondent Andrea Kremer to talk about his falling-out with the 49ers and how it landed him back where his father was an assistant under legendary head coach Bo Schembechler and Harbaugh himself was quarterback of the football team. Kremer learns that Harbaugh’s fiery demeanor and win-at-any-cost mentality may have contributed to this career move – and that he has no plans of toning down his passion any time soon.

Producers: Josh Fine, Beret Remak.

(Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson with host Bryant Gumbel.)

*Seattle’s Savior. When you toss the biggest interception in Super Bowl history, how do you cope? REAL SPORTS host Bryant Gumbel travels to San Diego, where Russell Wilson, the Seattle Seahawks’ superstar quarterback, spends the offseason to speak with him about that ill-fated play, witness his grueling workouts and see how he’s handling the criticism. Gumbel also gets a behind-the-scenes look at the former two-sport star as he trains with the Texas Rangers, who own his baseball rights, at spring training and learns that the University of Wisconsin product may aspire to play the two sports professionally one day.

Producer: Nick Dolin.

(Tony Gwynn, Jr. speaking with correspondent Jon Frankel.)

*Big League Chew. When baseball great Tony Gwynn died last summer from salivary gland cancer at age 54, smokeless tobacco in Major League Baseball became a hot topic yet again. It’s estimated that a third of MLB players chew or dip smokeless tobacco – a number new MLB commissioner Rob Manfred would like to see reduced to zero. When REAL SPORTS correspondent Jon Frankel first examined the issue in May 2011, he discovered why this controversial custom is permitted, why so many players use when the health risks are well documented and how its popularity among the game’s elite affects the players of tomorrow. Now, Frankel sits down with Manfred to get the league’s current stance on the issue and hears from Gwynn’s son, major leaguer Tony Jr., who knows all too well about the toll smokeless tobacco can take.

Producers: Tim Walker, Nisreen Habbal.

Throughout 2015, REAL SPORTS features three-to-four minute segments spotlighting a different comedy star from the HBO family, who closes each show with a personal, unfiltered take on an element of sports. This month, longtime HBO favorite Chris Rock offers his take on African-Americans and baseball.

Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel returns with a special NCAA edition March 24

March 24, 2015 By admin

hbo-real-sportsCELEBRATING 20 AWARD-WINNING SEASONS,

REAL SPORTS WITH BRYANT GUMBEL PRESENTS AN NCAA SPECIAL,

EXAMINING THE FINANCIAL IMPACT OF INJURIES ON FORMER ATHLETES AND

EXPLORING THE GROWING MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS OF STUDENT-ATHLETES,

ALONG WITH SPECIAL ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSIONS

WHEN IT RETURNS MARCH 24, EXCLUSIVELY ON HBO

REAL SPORTS WITH BRYANT GUMBEL, TV’s most honored sports journalism series, departs from its usual format for a special look at the NCAA and its treatment (or as some allege, mistreatment) of student-athletes when the show’s 216th edition debuts TUESDAY, MARCH 24 (10:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT), exclusively on HBO.

For the up-to-the-minute updates about REAL SPORTS, follow on Twitter at @RealSportsHBO or join the conversation using #RealSports.

Segments include:

*The Wreckage. The stakes are high when a college athlete suffers a serious injury and a possible pro career hangs in the balance. Injuries sustained on the field can not only leave devastating scars and require years of painful rehabilitation, but also create mounds of debt that become the athlete’s legacy long after the headlines fade.

Correspondent Bernard Goldberg meets with numerous former college student-athletes who endured massive injuries and discovers that once players are no longer at school, they’re typically on their own to pay medical bills and support their debilitated bodies. He speaks to players from the University of Washington, Oklahoma University, Eastern Illinois University and Illinois State University, who document financial difficulties stemming from medical expenses and the lack of earning potential resulting from injuries suffered while representing their colleges. REAL SPORTS also talks to national health and labor experts, asking how the NCAA and the schools have been able to avoid paying for these injuries and sidestep labor protections available to nearly every worker in all 50 states.

Producer: Josh Fine.

*Under the Radar. College athletes are often regarded as well-rounded young adults, brimming with self-confidence and good character, and in peak physical condition. However, a sizable number of them are currently being diagnosed as clinically depressed. REAL SPORTS correspondent Jon Frankel examines this alarming mental health crisis and discovers that many athletes report feeling overwhelmed by team responsibilities, performance mandates and academic workloads, while suffering under increasingly abusive coaches who often control their athletic and academic future. Frankel sits down with the NCAA’s chief medical officer, a workplace abuse expert and former NCAA athletes to learn more.

Producer: Josh Fine.

To lend perspective, host Bryant Gumbel will lead spirited discussions following both segments, with panelists discussing the two pieces and tackling related issues at a time when interest in college athletics is exceptionally high.

Throughout the 2015 season, REAL SPORTS features three-to-four minute segments spotlighting a different comedy star from the HBO family, who will close each show with a personal, unfiltered take on some element of sports. This month, comedian Lewis Black takes on the NCAA.

Other HBO playdates: March 24 (2:40 a.m.), 26 (1:00 p.m., 8:00 p.m.), 29 (11:00 a.m.) and 31 (4:00 p.m.), and April 1 (10:45 a.m., 6:00 p.m.), 4 (11:30 a.m.), 6 (12:10 a.m.) and 9 (3:00 a.m.)

HBO2 playdates: March 27 (5:45 p.m.) and 31 (8:30 p.m.), and April 2 (2:40 p.m., midnight), 7 (11:00 a.m.), 11 (4:30 p.m.), 16 (1:10 a.m.) and 19 (2:45 p.m.)

REAL SPORTS WITH BRYANT GUMBEL is available on multiple platforms, including HBO On Demand® and HBO GO®.

REAL SPORTS was recognized by the University of Georgia’s Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication with a 2012 George F. Peabody Award for broadcast excellence. March 13, 2015 By admin

hbo-fight

LAS VEGAS (March 11, 2015) – Sports fans will be treated to the fight that has captured the attention of the entire world when boxing’s pound-for-pound king Floyd “Money” Mayweather steps into the ring to face eight-division world champion Manny “Pac-Man” Pacquiao in an epic welterweight world championship unification bout. The much-anticipated mega-fight will take place Saturday, May 2 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Promoted by Mayweather Promotions and Top Rank Inc., the pay-per-view telecast will be co-produced and co-distributed by SHOWTIME PPV® and HBO Pay-Per-View® beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/ 6:00 p.m. PT.

Superstars Mayweather and Pacquiao, whose crossover appeal transcends the sport and has made them household names, will compete in an event that is expected to eclipse any and all pay-per-view, live gate and closed circuit records. Mayweather vs. Pacquiao will rival legendary and memorable prizefights in the sport’s history such as the “Thrilla in Manila,” the “Rumble in the Jungle” and Sugar Ray Leonard vs. Tommy Hearns.

“Since the fight was announced, the response from the public has been unbelievable, and it’s even more clear that this is the fight the fans want to see,” said Mayweather. “I’m grateful that Manny Pacquiao and I were able to make it happen. This will be the biggest event in the history of boxing. I can’t thank my team enough for their support from day one. I’m more motivated than ever to put on an unbelievable show, and I’ll be ready for May 2.”

“I will be ready for my date with destiny on May 2,” said Pacquiao.  “I am very happy that Floyd Mayweather and I can give the fans the fight they have wanted for so many years. They have waited long enough and they deserve it.  It is their mandate.  It is an honor to be part of this historic event.  I dedicate this fight to all the fans who willed this fight to happen and, as always, to bring glory to the Philippines and my fellow Filipinos around the world.”

The fighters, promoters and network executives worked in close cooperation to ensure that every detail was agreed upon and set in order to deliver this historic fight.

“This fight is what we’ve all been waiting for,” said Leonard Ellerbe, CEO of Mayweather Promotions. We always say that we want to give the fans what they want, and on May 2 they will get just that. “Mayweather vs. Pacquiao is the biggest event in the history of boxing, and we’re confident it will break all pay-per-view, live gate, and closed circuit records. Floyd has worked hard his whole career and controlled his own destiny to get to this point. Mayweather Promotions is excited for him and to be part of this extraordinary opportunity for everybody involved.”

“The whole world is eagerly awaiting this exciting battle,” said Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank “With the help of God, we will be triumphant.”

“Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather have been the two most prominent fighters in the sport of boxing for the past decade, and fight fans around the world have been clamoring for them to face each other,” said Ken Hershman, President HBO Sports. “And now, on May 2, in what everyone believes will be the biggest boxing event of all-time, fight fans have been granted their wish. May 2 will be a signature moment for the sport of boxing and HBO Sports is thrilled to be a part of this spectacular event. I know the fighters and their teams will be primed to excel and we plan to work closely with everyone involved to deliver the same level of performance from a broadcast perspective.”

“When Showtime Networks signed Floyd Mayweather we began planning for spectacular events throughout the term of our agreement.  For both Floyd and for us, this fight was the top priority,” said Stephen Espinoza, Executive Vice President & General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports. “The overwhelming anticipation for this fight is driving us to work around the clock on virtually every aspect of the event to deliver a world-class presentation worthy of Mayweather vs. Pacquiao.”

“Like boxing fans worldwide, we’re very excited that the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight has come to fruition,” said Richard Sturm, president of Entertainment and Sports for MGM Resorts International. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to host this championship fight at MGM Grand, home to the sport’s biggest events. This May weekend will prove to be one of the most electric weekends Las Vegas has ever experienced.”

One of the most decorated fighters in the history of the sport, the undefeated Floyd Mayweather (47-0, 26 KOs) is an 11-time world champion in five weight divisions and is universally recognized as the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world. With his trademark speed, defensive prowess and ability to read his opponents Mayweather has amassed wins over 20 world champions in his already legendary 19-year career.  In addition to his in-ring accomplishments, Forbes, Fortune and Sports Illustrated have named Mayweather the world’s highest-paid athlete multiple times. His events average more than one million pay-per-view buys per fight, which is the highest average of any boxer in history. Mayweather holds the all-time record in gross pay-per-view receipts and has participated in three of the top six highest grossing pay-per-view events of all-time. Thus far, Mayweather is the only fighter to have participated in two events that generated more than 2 million pay-per-view buys each. Mayweather has been decorated with awards for “Best Male Athlete” and “Fighter of the Year” by various organizations including five ESPN ESPY Awards and two Boxing Writers Association of America awards.

Manny Pacquiao (57-5-2, 38 KOs), the lone congressional representative from the Sarangani province in the Philippines (he was reelected to a second term, running unopposed in 2013), is the only fighter to win eight world titles in as many different weight divisions.  A three-time Fighter of the Year and the Boxing Writers Association of America’s “Fighter of the Decade,” Pacquiao’s resumé features victories over present and future Hall of Famers, including Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales, Miguel Cotto, Shane Mosley and Juan Manuel Márquez. From 2008 to 2010, five of his seven victories were world title victories in five different weight classes, from 130 to 154 pounds.  No active boxer has sold more live tickets in the U.S. than Pacquiao, who is also credited with more than 13 million domestic pay-per-view buys.  Pacquiao regained the WBO welterweight title last year, on April 12, via a scintillating unanimous decision over Timothy Bradley Jr., avenging his controversial 2012 split decision loss to the undefeated two-division world champion.

REAL SPORTS WITH BRYANT GUMBEL

LOOKS BACK AT THE ICONIC 1985 CHICAGO BEARS;

INTERVIEWS NFL ANALYST CRIS COLLINSWORTH;

CATCHES UP WITH FORMER NBA STAR STEPHON MARBURY IN BEIJING; AND

RECONNECTS WITH THREE-TIME NATIONAL CHAMPION URBAN MEYER

WHEN IT RETURNS JAN. 20, EXCLUSIVELY ON HBO

REAL SPORTS WITH BRYANT GUMBEL, TV’s most honored sports journalism series, returns with an all-new season of enterprising features and reporting when the show’s 214th edition debuts on TUESDAY, JAN. 20 (10:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT), exclusively on HBO.

For the up-to-the-minute updates about REAL SPORTS, follow on Twitter at @RealSportsHBO or join the conversation using #RealSports.

Segments include:

*Monsters of the Midway. The 1985 Chicago Bears are among the most iconic championship teams in modern pro sports history. Sparked by dynamic head coach Mike Ditka, they were a devastating powerhouse on defense and efficient machine on offense, and featured an array of memorable characters such as Jim McMahon, Walter Payton, William Perry, Dave Duerson, Richard Dent and Mike Singletary. Thirty years later, the players are still revered, but many of them are feeling less than immortal. Host Bryant Gumbel, who was raised in Chicago, returns home to explore the triumph and tragedy that have touched this band of close-knit brothers. Interviews include Mike Ditka, Jim McMahon, Richard Dent, Steve McMichael and Tregg Duerson.

Producer: Jordan Kronick.

*Cris Collinsworth. Arguably the most accomplished and recognized personality in sports broadcasting today, Cris Collinsworth, 55, has the unique ability to explain the complexities of football to millions of viewers. An All-American at the University of Florida, he played eight seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, earning three Pro Bowl nods and appearing in two Super Bowls against the San Francisco 49ers (XVI and XXIII). Following his second Super Bowl appearance, Collinsworth began his TV work on HBO’s “Inside the NFL.” Since 2009, he’s been the expert analyst for the league’s most-watched game of the week on NBC’s “Sunday Night Football.”

REAL SPORTS correspondent Mary Carillo goes one-on-one with the 15-time Emmy® winner two weeks before he calls Super Bowl XLIX in Glendale, Arizona and gains a behind-the-scenes look at his tireless preparation, which includes ten-hour days full of film sessions. She learns that Collinsworth, a husband and father of four, has passed along the sports tradition to his children. Austin is captain of the Notre Dame football team and Jac hosts a weekly football television show at Notre Dame, while Ashley is a junior captain of the Harvard track team and Katie is making her way as an executive at the Golf Channel.

Producer: Nick Dolin.

*Reinventing His Game. In 2009, after prolonged turmoil with the New York Knicks, Stephon Marbury turned down a one-year contract offer from the Boston Celtics and walked away from the NBA. Already dealing with deep depression over the loss of his father in 2007 and the failure of his Starbury brand of affordable basketball sneakers, the 13-year veteran struggled to cope away from the hardwood.

But in 2010, Marbury returned to the game he loved with the Chinese Basketball Association’s Shanxi Zhongyu Brave Dragons and had an impressive season, averaging 23 points and nine assists. Now, after five seasons in the CBA, Marbury, 37, is one of the league’s biggest stars. Since 2011, he has been a member of the Beijing Ducks, leading them to the playoffs each year, and capturing championships in 2012 and 2014, something the Coney Island native never experienced in the NBA. More recently, his Starbury brand has been reenergized by his success in China. *Urban Meyer. Earlier this week, Urban Meyer entered rarified air with his third National Championship, leading Ohio State Buckeyes to an upset victory over the Oregon Ducks. Just a few months ago, in Sept. 2014, REAL SPORTS correspondent Andrea Kremer presented a revealing look at Meyer, revealing the amazing highs and painful lows of being at the helm of a National Championship team. In a new interview, Kremer sits down with Meyer to discuss how winning a National Championship feels this time around.

During his six seasons as head football coach with the University of Florida, Urban Meyer captured two National Championships. Less than two years after winning the 2008 title, however, he shocked the college football world by retiring at age 46, citing health and family. But there was more to the story than the reported chest pains. Meyer could only stay away from the game so long before his desire to patrol the sidelines returned, and in 2012 took the reins at Ohio State University. Kremer originally talked with the 50-year-old to discuss his departure from Florida and his new position at one of the nation’s most pressure-filled football programs, learning how he intended to balance work and family – and hearing from Meyer’s wife and daughters whether he was living up to his end of the bargain.

Producer: Jordan Kronick.
