Bob Costas and Tom Verducci Host Episode on the Iconic Broadcaster This Monday, July 13 at 7:00 p.m. EDT
July 10, 2020 –MLB Network today announced iconic broadcaster Al Michaels will be featured on the next installment of MLB Network’s new series The Sounds of Baseball this Monday, July 13 at 7:00 p.m. EDT. Co-hosted by MLB Network’s Bob Costas and Tom Verducci, the episode will relive the greatest moments and calls from Michaels’ baseball broadcast career, which included play-by-play roles with the Cincinnati Reds, San Francisco Giants and eight World Series. The one-hour program on Michaels, a 2013 Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame inductee, who grew up listening to Vin Scully call Brooklyn Dodgers games at Ebbets Field, will re-air at 11:00 p.m. EDT. The Sounds of Baseball series launched this past June, with Hall of Fame broadcasters Vin Scully, Jack Buck and Bob Uecker featured on the first three programs. A clip from Monday’s program can be viewed here.
Costas and Verducci will provide anecdotes and commentary on several of Michaels’ calls throughout the episode, including Johnny Bench’s ninth-inning home run and Bob Moose’s wild pitch to end Game 5 of the 1972 NLCS between the Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates. The way Michaels seemingly transformed into a news anchor on October 17, 1989 when the Loma Prieta earthquake interrupted Game 3 of the Giants–Oakland Athletics World Series at Candlestick Park is highlighted, as well as Game 6 of the 1985 World Series – commonly known as the Don Denkinger game – featuring the St. Louis Cardinals and Kansas City Royals. Michaels calling Dave Henderson’s two-run home run in Game 5 of the 1986 ALCS to help lead the Boston Red Sox over the California Angels, and multiple moments from the 1988 NLCS between the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets, are also featured.
To complement Monday’s The Sounds of Baseball episode, MLB Network will re-air the Mets’ ninth-inning three-run comeback over the Giants from July 8, 2011, which was called by Costas and Michaels on MLB Network, at 2:00 p.m. EDT. The telecast marked the first time Costas and Michaels called an MLB game together and the first MLB game Michaels called since 1995. MLB Network’s daily studio lineup of High Heat with Christopher Russo presented by Liberty Mutual at 1:00 p.m. EDT, MLB Now hosted by Brian Kenny at 4:00 p.m. EDT, Intentional Talk presented by Toro at 5:00 p.m. EDT, co-hosted by Chris Rose and Kevin Millar, and MLB Tonight presented by Camping World at 6:00 p.m. EDT, will air on Monday, July 13, leading up to The Sounds of Baseball program.
Future episodes of The Sounds of Baseball will be announced at a later date. Since MLB Network’s launch in 2009, Costas and Verducci also co-hosted MLB Network’s original series, MLB’s 20 Greatest Games in 2011, which ranked the best 20 games of the last 50 years.
