NOTES AND QUOTES – ALEX BOWMAN WINS FIRST CAREER MONSTER ENERGY NASCAR CUP SERIES RACE AT CHICAGOLAND SPEEDWAY ON NBCSN

June 30, 2019 By admin

“I’ve seen a majority of his career up close. It’s just awesome to see him finally achieve his dream.” – Dale Earnhardt Jr.

“Always great to see a first-time winner. There is nothing like winning that first race.” – Jeff Burton

JOLIET, Ill. – June 30, 2019 – Alex Bowman won his first-ever Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race today in the Camping World 400 on NBCSN, as NBC Sports began its coverage of the 2019 NASCAR season this weekend from Chicagoland Speedway.

NBC Sports’ lead NASCAR race announcer Rick Allen called the race alongside 21-time Cup Series race winner and “The Mayor” of NASCAR Jeff Burton. Racing legend and two-time Daytona 500 Champion Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Daytona 500-winning crew chief Steve Letarte called the action from a second booth.

On Alex Bowman’s first-career Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series win:

Earnhardt Jr.: “I’m so happy for Alex. I’ve seen a majority of his career up close. It’s just awesome to see him finally achieve his dream.”

Letarte: “I’m happy for Alex and I’m happy for the fans. We saw some great racing. A great battle between Alex Bowman and Kyle Larson at the end. I was impressed with everything I saw.”

Burton: “Always great to see a first-time winner. There is nothing like winning that first race.”

RACE RESULTS

Position Driver Car#
1 Alex Bowman 88
2 Kyle Larson 42
3 Joey Logano 22
4 Jimmie Johnson 44
5 Brad Keselowski 2

Marty Snider, Kelli Stavast, Dave Burns and Parker Kligerman reported from pit road.

Coverage began on NBCSN at 1 p.m. ET with NASCAR America, followed by Countdown to Green at 2:30 p.m. ET. Krista Voda anchored pre-race coverage from NBC Sports’ “Peacock Pit Box,” which returns for a second season, alongside analysts Kyle Petty and Dale Jarrett. Rutledge Wood reported from various sites at Chicagoland Speedway throughout the pre-race show.

Following the green flag shortly after 3 p.m. ET, the race was red-flagged on Lap 12 for over three hours due to severe weather and resumed at approximately 6:45 p.m. ET.

Sunday’s pre-race coverage on NBCSN included:

  • Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s interview with Kyle Busch and Kyle Larson prior to the race on Sunday about the famous “Slide Job” finish to the 2018 Chicagoland race;

  • The first installment of NASCAR America’s “Behind the Driver” series, which showcased former NASCAR driver Mike McLaughlin, who has been instrumental in making Joey Logano a NASCAR Champion;

  • Wood and Petty did their best “Blues Brothers” impersonation as they cruised through Joliet to remind fans that NASCAR is back on NBC Sports for the remainder of the 2019 season. Click here to watch.

The following are highlights from this afternoon’s Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race coverage on NBCSN:

Bowman to Snider during the burnout interview: “It’s all I wanted my whole life. This is a lot of validation for a lot of people who said I could never do it.”

Earnhardt Jr.: “Big day for Alex, big day for Hendrick Motorsports, maybe even a bigger day for Chevrolet in his Camaro. They’ve come a long way with this racecar.”

Allen as Bowman crosses the line to win the Camping World 400: “Alex Bowman has finished in every position in a Cup Series race. He’s never finished first. Working his way through the final turn. Alex Bowman will win at Chicago!”

Burton with 4 laps to go: “Really smart driving by Alex Bowman, understanding he has to do two different things on two different ends of the race track.”

Earnhardt Jr. on the battle between Bowman and Larson with 6 laps to go: “These two guys are really loose right here and are driving with everything they’ve got.”

Burton on Bowman with 13 laps to go: “It’s a huge disadvantage that Daniel Hemric is running the bottom. That’s exactly where Bowman wants to be.”

Earnhardt Jr. on Larson surging in second place with 14 laps to go: “Bowman’s team needs to be telling him about this. Where is he running? I would tell that driver in the lead, ‘You might want to think about changing your line. That guy is coming.”

Allen with 21 laps to go: “Bowman has been in this position before. I think back to Phoenix when he was actually filling in for you, Dale Jr., and looking so impressive, but then it was a late restart that ended up maybe taking the win away – maybe his first win ever – away from him. Could the same thing be in the back of his mind right now?”

Snider on Kyle Larson and his performance’s impact on the playoff standings on Lap 211: “It’s been an outstanding day for Kyle Larson…when they came into the day just plus-18 above the cut line. As it sits, they are plus-36. It may not be the win but it’s exactly what Kyle Larson needed.”

Letarte on Alex Bowman on Lap 202: “He has done something that no one else has been able to do today – break away from the pack. He’s now up two seconds on Jimmie Johnson…if I’m Alex Bowman, I wait for someone to force me into a strategy. That’s why that lead helps him. He now commands the race. But if I’m Joey Logano or someone else back there, force the hand and come to pit road.”

Earnhardt Jr. on flat tires for Kevin Harvick, Clint Bowyer, Kyle Busch and Ryan Blaney toward end of Stage One: “Chaos… a unique situation where these guys were just trying to stretch it to the end of the stage. We might not find ourselves in a situation where we’re trying to push the tires that hard again, but it’s something to keep an eye on.”

Letarte on impact of weather delay prior to restart in Stage One: “At the start, 93 degrees, the track over 120 degrees. Now, it’s a nice – actually, beautiful outside, 72 degrees, track cooled way down. So as a crew chief, I need to be thinking of this: What do I need to do to my racecar to make these adjustments to try to put more speed in it? Dale, as a driver, I need your help. The track is going to be green, but you’re going to have to start giving me feedback quickly. We’re going to have to make adjustments. We can’t wait two or three pit stops.”

Special Appearances by Fowler, Thomas, Jason Dufner and Alabama Football Head Coach Nick Saban

ORLANDO, Fla., June 28, 2019 – Driven, the critically-acclaimed college golf documentary series, will take viewers behind the scenes to recap the 2018-19 golf seasons for Alabama, Auburn and Oklahoma State men’s golf programs in its season two finale, Saturday at 2 p.m. ET on NBC. Executive produced by PGA TOUR winner Rickie Fowler (Main Event Productions) and co-executive produced by major champion Justin Thomas, Driven also will air Monday at 9 p.m. ET on GOLF Channel.

Narrated by Emmy Award-winning actor Josh Duhamel, Driven is a four-part documentary series that followed the competitive journeys of the Alabama men’s golf team and their “Iron Bowl” rivalry with Auburn as they looked to return to the NCAA Men’s Golf National Championships. The series also followed Oklahoma State, the reigning NCAA national champions and the top-ranked team in the country, as they looked to defend their 2018 title.

Saturday’s hour-long finale will delve into the 2018-19 golf seasons on and off the course for all three nationally ranked programs, beginning with the fall season and culminating with the 2019 NCAA Men’s Golf National Championships in May. GOLF Channel cameras were embedded with the teams throughout the season as they traveled the country as well as on campus, giving viewers inside access into their college golf seasons, concluding with Auburn and Oklahoma State’s play at the national championships.

Taking place at The Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark., the national championships featured 72-holes of individual stroke play and two days of team match play. Following the conclusion of the regular golf season, Saturday’s finale will turn its focus to Oklahoma State’s attempt to defend its national championship, featuring sophomore Matthew Wolff – who captured the 2019 NCAA individual national championship – and junior Viktor Hovland competing in their final collegiate tournament before turning professional.

AARON RODGERS RANKS NO. 1 AND PATRICK MAHOMES IS NO. 2 AS CHRIS SIMMS COMPLETES HIS TOP 40 QB COUNTDOWN ACROSS NBC SPORTS PLATFORMS

June 27, 2019 By admin

Russell Wilson, Andrew Luck, Deshaun Watson and Ben Roethlisberger Round Out Numbers 3-6 in the Simms Top 40 QB Countdown on Chris Simms Unbuttoned and Pro Football Talk Live

“I still think Aaron Rodgers is the best quarterback in football…The arm is still at an all-time great level.” – Simms on his No. 1 Ranking

“Mahomes has the talent and the demeanor to really challenge the all-time greats and be the greatest quarterback of all-time.” – Simms on Patrick Mahomes

STAMFORD, Conn. – June 27, 2019 – Chris Simms ranks Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers as his number one quarterback in the NFL while Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes ranks number two as Simms’ top 40 quarterback countdown concludes on a pair of NBC Sports’ platforms — the Chris Simms Unbuttoned podcast and on “PFT Live” – this week, with the QBs ranked 1-6.

“The whole Top Ten is nitpicking,” Simms said. “These are all All-Stars and great players, but as awesome I think Mahomes is, I think that if Aaron Rodgers was on the Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game, that they would have won that game…These are my two favorite quarterbacks in football. It was a very tough call, but I’m still not ready to relinquish the title from Aaron Rodgers.”

Simms also unveiled his quarterbacks ranked numbers three through six this week, which include Seattle’s Russell Wilson at three, Indianapolis’ Andrew Luck at four, Houston’s Deshaun Watson at five and Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger at six.

Simms’ complete Top 40 QB Countdown:

1. Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay 21. Jimmy Garoppolo, San Francisco
2. Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City 22. Sam Darnold, New York Jets
3. Russell Wilson, Seattle 23. Josh Allen, Buffalo
4. Andrew Luck, Indianapolis 24. Kyler Murray, Arizona
5. Deshaun Watson, Houston 25. Joe Flacco, Denver
6. Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh 26. Andy Dalton, Cincinnati
7. Matt Ryan, Atlanta 27. Jameis Winston, Tampa Bay
8. Cam Newton, Carolina 28. Case Keenum, Washington
9. Tom Brady, New England 29. Marcus Mariota, Tennessee
10. Drew Brees, New Orleans 30. Lamar Jackson, Baltimore
11. Carson Wentz, Philadelphia 31. Jacoby Brissett, Indianapolis
12. Philip Rivers, Los Angeles Chargers 32. Josh Rosen, Miami
13. Dak Prescott, Dallas 33. Ryan Tannehill, Tennessee
14. Matthew Stafford, Detroit 34. Eli Manning, New York Giants
15. Kirk Cousins, Minnesota 35. Ryan Fitzpatrick, Miami
16. Nick Foles, Jacksonville 36. Robert Griffin III, Baltimore
17. Baker Mayfield, Cleveland 37. Drew Lock, Denver
18. Derek Carr, Oakland 38. Dwayne Haskins, Washington
19. Jared Goff, Los Angeles Rams 39. Colt McCoy, Washington
20. Mitchell Trubisky, Chicago 40. Tyrod Taylor, Los Angeles Chargers

The following are highlights from this week’s editions of Chris Simms Unbuttoned and PFT Live:

No. 6: Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh

Simms: “Last year was a phenomenal year for Ben Roethlisberger…He’s still one of the best down the field throwers in the sport and I put a lot into that because explosive plays are the number two stat in a football game as far as determining who wins a game. There’s turnover margin and the next thing that determines it is 20+ yard plays and that a lot of the time is predicated through Big Ben making big plays in the pass game…When you talk about him on the field and his ability to make game-changing plays and do special things. You go back and look at the highlights and listen, Antonio Brown isn’t as wide open as we’d all like to think and remember all the time…Sometimes you’re going to make a bonehead play or two when you’re a quarterback that has to play the way Ben Roethlisberger does, which is basically carry the offense…If we just try to keep it between the white lines and not let all those other things influence you, it’s a special career. For me, it’s a borderline Top 10 career in NFL history.”

No. 5: Deshaun Watson, Houston Texans

Simms: “Deshaun Watson is one of the five best quarterbacks in the NFL. You want to talk about super talent, I mean this guy is a superstar. He could be face of the NFL type talent…Before Patrick Mahomes, he was the new, cool, young, sexy, in vogue quarterback…The negatives to me are just nuances of the position at this point…Besides the magic that he is capable of making with his scrambling and making plays, their run game is pretty good in Houston. It’s very good because of Deshaun Watson and that’s not going to go in the statistical book…Like the Cam Newton theory, it makes defenses do things they don’t want to do. His arm, he does take care of the football, his ability to be precise on short routes, deep routes, whatever it may be, are all-around special…Would I sit here and be shocked next year if I’m going, ‘Deshaun Watson is the best quarterback in football right now or the second-best quarterback?’ No, I don’t think that’s far-fetched. I think he’s that type of talent.”

No. 4: Andrew Luck, Indianapolis Colts

Simms: “Andrew Luck’s season was off the charts. Look at what happens to a player – and Andrew Luck was good already, don’t get me wrong – but when you start to give a support system around him…One of the best deep-ball throwers in the NFL. Extremely smart. He’s a pure pocket passer, but don’t forget that at 240 pounds, he ran a 4.59 coming out of the combine. He can go and we saw that a number of times last year…Accuracy, timing, it’s all top-notch. The arm is not like a big-time arm…He can throw it a far way, but he’s not throwing lasers…I do think at some point he’s going to have to correct his motion a little bit. I don’t think it’s going to last the test of time and I don’t necessarily think it’s always conducive to bad weather…Overall, the plays he makes, the clutchness he brings to the table on a week-to-week basis…I think he’s a special, special player that is definitely deserving in this Top Five…We know that games start and end for the Colts with Andrew Luck’s ability to provide for that team and the way teams gameplan for the Indianapolis Colts is all around Andrew Luck and what he does well.”

No. 3: Russell Wilson, Seattle Seahawks

Simms: “A one-man band. You talk about a team or a guy that is responsible for more of the production on their football team than any other quarterback in the sport, that’s where Russell Wilson is amazing. Whenever they need a big play, it’s almost always predicated on Russell Wilson making it happen…He’s never at any point been in an offensive system that I even remotely go, ‘This is Top Five in the NFL, Top Ten in the NFL.’ I mean it’s been as basic as it can get and yet touchdowns, big plays, quarterback rating, all of those are always towards the top of the list and he’s winning football games…He’s in the prime of his career and I think Seattle has turned over their team enough that they can make a little mini run here and they can be a playoff team year after year after year again.”

No. 2: Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs

Simms: “I’m not ready to call him better than Aaron Rodgers quite yet. I think the talent on the field, it’s certainly comparable. The arm, the ability to move, scramble, all of those things are so special by both of these guys and Mahomes is unbelievable…With all that being said, it was very equal. I went back and forth and at first I did write Mahomes at number one…Really what it came down to as far as the tie-breaker between these guys – because it’s really like 1A and 1B to me – is the experience factor at this time is where I give Aaron Rodgers the advantage in a race that’s this close…We saw the inexperience hurt him a little bit in games where teams did some different things…But I just can’t say enough about the player and what we saw last year. It was a special, special season. It was 1984 Dan Marino-ish the way he did things last year. I’ve never seen a guy come into the league their first year as a starting quarterback and really take over the league and take over everything about it by storm with just phenomenal plays…Mahomes has the talent and the demeanor to really challenge the all-time greats and be the greatest quarterback of all-time or be in that conversation. He certainly has the talent to do that.”

No. 1: Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers

Simms: “I still think he’s the best quarterback in football when you take everything into account. We can’t take into account the team around him and the offensive coordinator and things like that. I’m just evaluating what I see from Aaron Rodgers and yes, there were some ugly moments last year, definitely, but you could’ve put Superman back there at quarterback and there would have been some ugly moments. The team was overmatched…More is on his shoulders up in Green Bay than any quarterback in football as far as just carrying the team. Last year, was it the best year of his career? No, it certainly was not and I’m not totally giving him the free pass there. There were moments where I know he could have played better, but ultimately the team failed him a lot more than he failed them…I still think Aaron Rodgers plays the position and is the best quarterback in football, it’s not by a lot, he’s squeaking this one out, but I still think he’s the best…The movement, the speed, it’s still really good…The arm is still at an all-time great level. Like I say with Tom Brady, his arm is never going to fail him. When he’s 65 he’s still going to be able to throw lasers all over the place…Yes, he does get hurt. But when you have to play the position the way Aaron Rodgers does, which is you kind of have to play the game close to the edge and push the envelope if Green Bay wants to win games…He’s had to carry the team to where it puts his body in some compromising situations.”

WEEK 5 PREVIEW

The action continues this weekend in Atlanta with the following matchups:

ATLAS LC (1-3) VS. ARCHERS LC (2-2) – Fri., June 28, at 8 p.m. ET on NBCSN

Week 5 kicks off with a Friday night lights battle between the league’s top point-scorer and the top face-off athlete. Through four weeks of play, Archers LC’s Tom Schreiber continues to lead the league in points with 18, while Atlas LC’s Trevor Baptiste has won the most face-offs this season with 66. Atlas LC looks to notch its second win of the season this weekend in Atlanta, while Archers LC hope to improve to a winning record.

CHAOS LC (3-1) VS. CHROME LC (0-4)
– Sat., June 29, at 1 p.m. ET on NBC Sports Gold

Following three wins in four games this season, Chaos LC has emerged as the league’s top offense, led by lead goal scorer Connor Fields (11). In addition to the leading goal scorer, Chaos also possesses the player with the most ground balls (Thomas Kelly, 29) and the goalie with the most saves (Blaze Riorden, 64). Seeking their first win of the season, Chrome LC will look for a spark from attackman Jordan Wolf, widely known as one of the most dangerous dodging attackmen in the sport.

REDWOODS LC (2-2) VS. WHIPSNAKES LC (4-0)
– Sun., June 29, at 4 p.m. ET on NBC Sports Gold

The final game in Atlanta will feature the undefeated Whipsnakes LC taking on the reinvigorated Redwoods LC, who have allowed the fewest points this season. Whipsnakes will look to pick up where they left off last week vs. Atlas LC against the Redwoods defense in Week 5. Redwoods LC and Whipsnakes LC traded assets last week to improve their respective rosters, and Jules Heningburg will suit up this week for the Redwoods against his former team. The Whipsnakes’ defense will be fixed on Heningburg after a PLL record-tying eight-point performance last week.
