ALEX GREEN (UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA) RECEIVES 4TH ANNUAL TOM COUSINS AWARD AT 2018 EAST LAKE CUP

October 30, 2018 By admin

Award Recognizes Outstanding Collegiate Golfer Who

Excels in Academics, is Engaged In Their Community

ATLANTA, (Oct. 30, 2018) – The recipient of the 4th annual Tom Cousins Award was announced Monday night in conjunction with the East Lake Cup in Atlanta, with Alex Green (University of Alabama) being presented with the award. The honor recognizes a collegiate golfer best representing the values of the award: excelling in academics and engagement in the community.

A junior majoring in finance (minor in economics), Green (Fairhope, Ala.) is a member of the university’s honors college and has been among the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll for the duration of his collegiate career, and is a two-time member of the Southeastern Conference All Community Service team. His long list of community involvement includes volunteering at the University of Alabama Special Olympics and serving as the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee campus collaboration chairman. Green also was presented with the Alabama Men’s Golf Scholastic Achievement Award earlier this year.

The Tom Cousins Award is named after developer and philanthropist Tom Cousins, who laid out an aspirational blueprint to revitalize the East Lake community of Atlanta by providing cradle-to-college education, mixed-income housing and community wellness to break the cycle of poverty to create a holistic environment. East Lake now acts as a national model for community redevelopment through Purpose Built Communities for transforming a struggling community into a thriving neighborhood.

The East Lake Cup is being contested over three days, following the format from the final three days of the NCAA men’s and women’s golf national championships. Day 1 consists of an individual stroke play competition to determine the individual champion and to seed for two days of match-play competition. The final two days of the competition feature two match-play tournaments hosted simultaneously for the men’s and women’s divisions, with the semifinals taking place on Tuesday and the finals and consolation matches on Wednesday.

Teams for the East Lake Cup are competing on the championship golf course at East Lake Golf Club, home of the TOUR Championship, the season-ending event of the PGA TOUR’s FedExCup Playoffs. The East Lake Cup benefits the East Lake Foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to helping families build better lives and children reach their highest potential through its holistic approach to community revitalization incorporating mixed-income housing, cradle-to-college education and community wellness. The East Lake Cup has raised nearly $1.5 million for the East Lake Foundation since its inception in 2015. Mercedes-Benz, CSX, Bridgestone Golf and ZipRecruiter are sponsors for the 2018 East Lake Cup.

ALBANE VALENZUELA (STANFORD), VIKTOR HOVLAND (OKLAHOMA STATE) WIN INDIVIDUAL STROKE PLAY AT 2018 EAST LAKE CUP

October 29, 2018 By admin

Stanford (Women), Duke (Men) Claim No. 1 Seeds for Team Match Play Semifinals (Tuesday, 3-6 P.M. ET on Golf Channel)

 Women’s Semifinals: (1) Stanford vs. (4) Alabama; (2) USC vs. (3) Arizona

Men’s Semifinals: (1) Duke vs. (4) Auburn; (2) Oklahoma State vs. (3) Alabama

ATLANTA, Oct. 29, 2018 – Albane Valenzuela (Stanford, junior) and Viktor Hovland (Oklahoma State, junior) claimed individual stroke play honors on Day 1 of the 4th annual East Lake Cup. Both turned in scores of 4-under par 68.

“I think I stayed very patient the entire round,” said Valenzuela. “Didn’t make putts on the first seven holes and then I had a good birdie on 8 I believe, so that gave me some really good momentum. Just very patient. Had a good up and down on the 11th and then just finishing with an eagle on 18. That was huge.”

“I think I’ve just kind of found my game a little bit,” said Hovland. “Not trying to do anything too fancy when I’m out there. I can kind of go crazy when I try to do too much. So, it’s like ok, try to hit the green, try to hit fairway and make some putts and usually a good score. Just trying to make things simple.”

NBC OLYMPICS TO AIR SPECIAL ON OCT. 31 CELEBRATING ICONIC 1968 OLYMPIC GAMES

October 29, 2018 By admin

Two-Hour Program Combines LA84 Foundation Panel Discussion & 1968 Documentary – Coverage Begins at 8:30 p.m. ET on NBCSN

NBC Sports’ Mike Tirico & Tony Dungy Participated in Summit Discussion on Legacy of 1968 Olympic Games Earlier This Month

October 16 Marked 50th Anniversary of Tommie Smith & John Carlos’ Black Power Salute at Mexico City Games

STAMFORD, Conn. – October 29, 2018 – As part of a month-long effort to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the iconic Black Power salute by U.S. Olympians Tommie Smith and John Carlos at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, NBC Olympics will combine its documentary 1968 with highlights from this month’s LA84 Foundation Summit panel discussion on the topic to present a unique two-hour programming special entitled 1968: The Legacy of the Mexico City Games that will premiere Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. ET on NBCSN.

1968, narrated by four-time Olympic gold medalist and 23-time Grand Slam singles champion Serena Williams, premiered in February during NBC Olympics’ coverage of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, and tells the story of the Vietnam War, the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy, protest movements in North America and Europe, and more. Amidst that backdrop, the Mexico City Games became a stage for the collision of sport and politics, and produced the salute by Smith and Carlos.

On October 18, NBC Olympics primetime host Mike Tirico moderated a panel at the annual LA84 Foundation Summit in Los Angeles that discussed the legacy of the 1968 Olympic Games and their impact today. Panelists included Pro Football Hall of Famer and NBC Sports analyst Tony Dungy, Olympic bronze medalist Ibtihaj Muhammad and four-time Olympic gold medalist Greg Louganis. The theme of this year’s summit focused on athlete activism and social justice, while also commemorating the 1968 Olympic Games.

“These men had a voice and they used it, and (my father) encouraged me to do that,” said Dungy during the LA84 Summit earlier this month. “So, when I became head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, I talked to our players, ‘Hey, you’ve got a great opportunity to play sports, to be on a national platform, but if all we do is play, you’re going to miss half of what you’re here for. God put you here for a reason. We have to make the communities better.’ I always encouraged my players to be part of making things better.”
