No. 1 Djokovic – No. 2 Murray Again in Australian Open Championship

January 29, 2016 By admin

  • Live on ESPN, Encore on ESPN2

It will be a familiar matchup at the Australian Open men’s championship as top-seeded and five-time winner Novak Djokovic faces No. 2 Andy Murray on ESPN late Saturday at 3 a.m. ET (12 a.m. PT).  The two have met three times with the trophy on the line in Melbourne, with the Serb triumphant each occasion.  (Murray has also lost the Australian Open championship match to Roger Federer.)  A win would be Djokovic’s 11th career Major title and third straight; it would be Murray’s third Major crown.  The match will also air on ESPN2 on Saturday at 9 a.m.

Women’s Championship Tonight
History awaits Down Under as top-seeded Serena Williams seeks her 22nd Major title – tying her with Steffi Graf and the Open Era record (Margaret Court won 24) – against No. 7 Angelique Kerber in the Australian Open Championship on ESPN late tonight, Friday, Jan. 29, at 3 a.m. ET/12 a.m. PT.

  • The 34-year old Williams – 6-0 in previous finals in Melbourne – has not dropped a set and has looked even more invincible in getting to this point than during her remarkable three-Major-titles 2015.
  • Kerber, 28, has seven career titles. The 5’8” lefthander is making her first appearance in a Major final; she twice reached the semifinal round of a Major (US Open 2011, Wimbledon 2012).  She is the first German woman in the Australian Open final in 20 years (Anke Huber, 1996).
  • The two have only met six times (all on hard courts), with the American taking five, all in straight sets. Kerber’s lone victory was in Cincinnati in 2012 (quarterfinals).

 All Courts on WatchESPN
Also tonight, there are several other championships live on WatchESPN (8:30 p.m.-7:30 a.m. ET / 5:30 p.m.-4:30 a.m. PT), including the men’s doubles championship featuring Andy Murray’s brother, (No. 7) Jamie Murray with partner Bruno Soares facing off against Daniel Nestor and Radek Stepanek.

Ninth Annual Jimmy V Week Raises Record $3.2 Million for Cancer Research

January 29, 2016 By admin

Nine-year total reaches $13.7 million mark

ESPN’s 2015 Jimmy V Week for Cancer Research raised a record-setting $3.2 million for The V Foundation for Cancer Research – a million more than the 2014 previous fundraising record of $2.2 million. In nine years, Jimmy V Week has raised $13.7 million for cancer research.

Jimmy V Week ran from Dec. 2-8, 2015 and introduced a new awareness campaign Your Fight is Our Fight – the emotionally-charged vignettes are from the view of real cancer patients and their support system showing the raw emotion that comes from a cancer diagnosis, going through radiation/chemo and finally being in remission.

“This campaign was created to tell the powerful stories of the brave cancer fighters, survivors and supporters,” said Kevin Martinez, ESPN vice president of Corporate Citizenship. “It’s these stories that inspire us to keep fighting. We are incredibly thankful to everyone who has joined us in this fight.”

The week opened with the annual simulcast of Jim Valvano’s iconic 1993 ESPYS speech across ESPN domestic networks, plus airing throughout the week were excerpts from ESPN SportsCenter anchor Stuart Scott’s 2014 ESPYS speech, public service announcements and special content and messaging to drive donations.

The campaign included the annual Jimmy V Women’s and Men’s Basketball Classics Presented by Corona – featuring three-time defending national champion UConn hosting No. 3 Notre Dame on December 5, as well as four top college basketball programs in the men’s event on December 8 – then-No. 20 West Virginia vs. then-No. 10 Virginia and then-No. 2 Maryland vs. UConn.

On top of the generosity of individual donors, more than $1.2 million was presented at the Jimmy V Men’s Basketball Classic from Corona, Hooters, the Champions League and New York Road Runners with Team V, which helped push the total to over $3 million.

“ESPN, sponsors and fans created another extraordinary Jimmy V Week,” said Susan Braun, CEO of The V Foundation. “As this support grows, through ESPN’s leadership and generosity, our ability to fight cancer escalates. Together, we will beat it!”
