Ernie Johnson, Greg Anthony and Rick Fox

Houston Rockets Head Coach Kevin McHale’s Pre-Game Interview

McHale on whether he expected more out of Dwight Howard: “No, I think that we’ve got to do a better job of getting him the ball more, and we’re doing a better job. I think he started off in November, he was averaging about 17 [ppg].  Now in January, I think he’s averaging well over 19, almost 20. We’re doing a better job. He came to a team that had a lot of guys that never played with a post guy. Our post feeding was really poor. We had a lot of turnovers getting it into him. We didn’t hit him when he was open. We’re getting a little bit better at that. I think people are getting a little more used to playing with a post player…post feeding for me is a lost art. We work on it every day…as we get better [at feeding the post], Dwight will get the ball in better position.  He’s been great. He’s been fun to work with.  He was frustrated for a while because he was open and guys weren’t hitting him, but we’re hitting him more now.”

McHale on Chandler Parsons’ development: “His development has been fantastic. He came in and his three-point shot was really shaky his first year…but [he’s] just a good, solid all-around NBA player; he worked really hard the last couple summers. His three-point shot now is very good. You can really count on him. He can play-make, he can drive, he can finish at the hoop; he’s a good, solid defender. He’s really turned into a tremendous player for us, and a guy that we really need on a nightly basis, and he’s been delivering.”

McHale on whether the Rockets need to be more physical: “No question. I think that’s one of our biggest lacks, one of the biggest areas that we lack is our physicality.  I can’t tell you how many times at halftime I walk and say, ‘Guys, we cannot continue to get pushed around. It’s going to be a physical game.’ There’s no question we have got to build that up. We don’t come out with enough physical presence in our team.”

Fox on Howard and expectations: “I just think he’s been held to a higher standard, maybe unfairly…but I’d rather be expected to be great than to just be good.”

Sprint Halftime Report

Johnson, Anthony and Fox

Fox on Tim Duncan following the first half: “You realize age is just a number for him because he still plays the game as if he was 28.”

Anthony on the match-up being important for Duncan and Howard: “This is also a statement game for both these guys. Neither were selected to be in the All-Star Game [as starters]…and [this is] one of the last opportunities you have to show the world, if you will, that you’re worthy and deserving.”

Webber [via video conference] on Howard and the influence of Hakeem Olajuwon: “I think too much is made of Hakeem Olajuwon [mentoring Howard]. Hakeem Olajuwon is one of the best players to ever play, that’s touched the ball, but that’s not the only way to score…a lot of guys who had less talent have been really effective by just using their body, just using spacing.”

NBA GameTime presented by Kia

Johnson, Anthony and Fox

Fox on the Houston’s ceiling in the West: “The teams ahead of them know who they are, already. And this is a team that’s still trying to discover how they all play together. They’re getting better.”

Anthony on what the Rockets’ success against the Spurs this season represents: “Not a lot… and that’s why San Antonio’s not going to be overly concerned. In the regular season, timing has a lot to do with things. People get caught up in what you do against a team a lot of times but very rarely do you both come into a situation on level footing.”

Dwight Howard’s Post-Game Interview

Howard on the Rockets improvement: “We’re getting better every day. Each game is different and we’re learning how to play with each other. Last year the way they played was a little bit different than how we’re trying to play this year. We want to be able to play inside-out, but also get up in transition. So, it’s a learning process for all of us, including myself.”

Howard on whether he expects to hear his name called as an All-Star participant: “I do expect to hear my name. But if not, that’s just going to give me motivation to go win that championship and come back next year to make sure everybody votes for my guys on the team and also myself.”

FOX SUPER BOWL DAILY Crew Talks Russell Wilson; Denver Defense

January 29, 2014 By admin

fox-sports-logoFOX SUPER BOWL DAILY airs twice at 12:00 PM ET and 6:00 PM ET on FOX Sports 1 this week leading up to Super Bowl XLVIII on FOX.  The January 28 12:00 PM ET edition was hosted by Curt Menefee and Joel Klatt with panelists Brian Urlacher, Howie Long, Scott Fujita, Randy Moss and Jay Glazer.

At 6 PM ET, Klatt hosted with panelists Urlacher, Long, Fujita and Tim Ryan.

Below are select quotes from Tuesday’s two editions.

ON SEATTLE SEAHAWKS QB RUSSELL WILSON:

Brian Urlacher – He takes care of the football. He values the possession of the football. A lot of young guys, you see them throw a lot of picks, fumbles, turnovers, he doesn’t do that. He values the football. When you have a good defense, you can do that. You can run the football; puts him in a good position. He scrambles better than anyone. He scrambles to get first downs. It’s impressive all the way around.

Howie Long – The one spot (the Seahawks) have kind of really missed on is the big receiver. I believe if Russell Wilson had the kind of receiving core that Peyton Manning has, or the receiving core at San Francisco, he puts up a lot more yardage. Things didn’t start well in the NFC Championship Game for Russell Wilson, so you talk about protecting the football, but it’s also the poise. What he needs to do at some point during the football game – a fourth and seven; fourth quarter, (Head Coach) Pete Carroll takes the kicking team off the field and decides to go for it, and Russell Wilson makes the big throw. That’s who he is. We have a lot of really good players in the league, but he might be the most genuine guy in football.

Tim Ryan – This kid knows the grid. He does his pirouette, flip back around and know where everyone is. Another category he’s great, last two minutes of the half; last two minutes of the game, this guy is electric. I don’t care about all those passing numbers with Peyton Manning, one number matters with Russell Wilson, he’s got more wins in his first two years of playing pro football than any other quarterback in the history of the game.

ON DENVER’S DEFENSE:

Fujita – They’re defense has stepped up, played their best, when it mattered the most. They poured it on, and got better and better throughout the season.

Urlacher – The AFC Championship really showed me something about Denver’s defense. I thought that New England could run the ball, and then play-action off the run, like they did all through the playoffs and the season. Denver’s defense stood up, the front four, or five, however many they rotate in. Their secondary stood up as well, Champ (Bailey) came in for one of the guys (Chris Harris) who got hurt. Champ comes in, and does a good job as well.

Long – We talk about teams getting hot. Baltimore, the New York Giants, and team’s that got hot at the right time. Defensively, this team was not playing well in the middle of the year. They had some injuries, had some players that had to step up; kind of had to redefine who they are. I think their offense did a nice job of adjusting what they do; running the football more, protecting their defense a little more.

FOX Super Bowl Daily Quote Sheet

January 28, 2014 By admin

fox-nflFOX Super Bowl Daily, hosted by Curt Menefee, airs twice daily at Noon ET and 6 PM ET on FOX Sports 1 this week leading up to Super Bowl XLVIII on FOX, with panelists Tim Ryan, Jimmy Johnson, Scott Fujita and Mike Pereira. Below are quotes from the Jan. 27 6 PM Edition of the show:

On competing against the Seattle Seahawks secondary:

·        Ryan – I think you do it a couple of ways. You do it with some up-tempo for sure, and get that pass rush tired. That’s the best way to hit that secondary, so Peyton Manning will manipulate the play clock. He’ll go long counts some time, he’ll go quick counts some time … moving (Demaryius Thomas) around and expecting Richard Sherman to stay in his left cornerback position. I think Peyton Manning is going to find out right away if they are going to shadow Demaryius Thomas with Richard Sherman, and if they don’t, I think you are going to see a lot of Demaryius Thomas in the slot against Walter Thurmond.

·        Johnson – I look for Peyton Manning against zone to get rid of the ball quick. He knows the pass rush is coming and he’s going to have open receivers, but against man coverage, you are going to see some bunch formations, you’re going to see those rub routes, you’re going to see some possible offensive pass interference. It will be interesting to see him get rid of the football against man coverage.

·        Fujita – Is either team really going to change what they do? I don’t think so … not that much. Richard Sherman is a left corner. This Seattle defense is going to do what they do. Peyton Manning’s offense is going to do what they are going to do. Seattle’s back end does such a good job of cutting off the back half of the field … better than any secondary in the league. What that forces Peyton to do is, especially with a good pass rush, is throw those underneath shallow crossers, hit those guys where the linebackers are, and those linebackers now, we’ve forgotten a lot about them in this conversation. They do the best job of dropping into their zones, having good zone integrity and tackling the ball carriers in space … the best in the league at that.

·        Pereira – And you know they are going to do that quick passing game … we talked about that. And I’ll tell you, we talk about how Seattle challenges the officials to throw the flag by grabbing receivers coming off the line. Well, Denver challenges officials, too, because the run a lot of that bubble screen stuff, where the receiver releases down field  and blocks just before the ball is caught, which actually is a foul, but the timing is so close … and on the run routes, too. So, the officials are going to be challenged, because Denver is going to run a lot of that.

On whether teams change their approach for the Super Bowl:

·        Johnson: I always felt like that in a big ball game, when you had two very talented teams, I thought it was very important to our team to have a little wrinkle. You know, not be the basic, but have a little wrinkle on offense … have a little wrinkle on defense … to kind of get them to thinking. To try to get in their head. You show it early and all of a sudden, they’re saying, ‘Oop, we didn’t practice against that … what if they do this?’ And it can really disrupt them. Having a little wrinkle that’s different than what you normally do.

Quotable Interviews from FOX Sports Radio Super Bowl Coverage in New York City

January 28, 2014 By admin

fox-sports-logo QUOTABLE INTERVIEWS FROM FOX SPORTS RADIO

SUPER BOWL COVERAGE IN NEW YORK CITY

LOS ANGELES, January 28, 2014 – Below are today’s highlights from FOX Sports Radio’s week-long Super Bowl remote broadcast from New York City, featuring FOX Sports Daybreak with Andy Furman and Mike North, Jay Mohr Sports, and Steve Gorman SPORTS!, which debuted yesterday. Guests included NFL Hall of Famer and Super Bowl Champion Head Coach Mike Ditka, New York Jets Defensive Lineman Muhammad Wilkerson, NFL Hall of Famer and Super Bowl Champion Quarterback Joe Theismann, and FOX Sports 1 Senior NFL Reporter Alex Marvez.

Jay Mohr Sports

NFL Hall of Famer and Super Bowl Champion Head Coach Mike Ditka joined Jay Mohr Sports on Monday to talk Super Bowl XLVIII and what it takes to be a champion, as well as sharing whether a Super Bowl ring or Hall of Fame induction is more important in his view. Below is an excerpt from the conversation:

Mohr: “What would bother you more – having a Super Bowl ring, and not getting into the Hall of Fame or getting into the Hall of Fame, never having won a Super Bowl?”

Ditka: “You don’t play the game with the idea that you are going to get in the Hall of Fame; you play the game because you love the game…The Hall of Fame is just like icing on the cake if you had a great career. The Super Bowl – when you’re coaching or playing – your goal is to win that Super Bowl.”

Steve Gorman SPORTS!

NFL Hall of Famer and Super Bowl winning quarterback Joe Theismann joined Steve Gorman SPORTS! during the debut show to talk Super Bowl and music, in addition to how Peyton Manning’s legacy would be affected by a win or loss. Below is an excerpt from the conversation:

Steve: “Joe, let’s talk about the Broncos and Peyton Manning…Where do you rank him all time, and do you think if he wins or loses this Super Bowl, does it change his legacy?”

Theismann: “A win or a loss does not change, in my mind, how I view Peyton’s legacy…I don’t believe the Super Bowl has that impact. I think beating Tom Brady had more of an impact on what his legacy would have been than what happens in this Super Bowl. And then the other part of it Steve too, is, okay – how does he play? If his offensive line struggles blocking Seattle’s defensive line and linebackers, and he’s not going to be able to do the things that he does, can you really say it was his [fault] or not?”

FOX Sports Daybreak

FOX Sports Daybreak’s Andy Furman and Mike North caught up with FOX Sports 1 Senior NFL Reporter, Alex Marvez this morning.  Alex talked about the atmosphere in New York and also says this won’t be the last cold weather Super Bowl that we see. Below is an excerpt from the conversation:

Alex Marvez: “You look at the NFL, the way that they leverage all these cities into corporate welfare…The more cities that bid – if you start working cold weather cities into the mix and increasing the number of cities doing the bidding – the NFL continues to get a sweetheart deal. They’re really smart about that…This is the future of the NFL under Roger Goodell. He’s put it in there, and the fact is, he’s gonna get lucky – the weather should be pretty good Sunday night, and I guarantee you they roll the dice again at some point.”

To hear the audio, visit: http://www.foxsportsradio.com/articles/fox-sports-daybreak-447180/fox-sports-daybreak-alex-marvez-12010905/

FOX Super Bowl Sunday Pregame Puts America In A New York/New Jersey State Of Mind

January 27, 2014 By admin

fox-sports-logoBuck, Aikman, Oliver and Andrews Call Game

New York – While much focus has been devoted to the weather at Super Bowl XLVIII, the first NFL championship game in the Super Bowl era played in a northern, open-air stadium, perhaps not enough attention has been placed on the football-rich tradition of the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area itself and its link to America’s strong passion for football.  That changes when the FOX SUPER BOWL SUNDAY pregame show airs Sunday, Feb. 2 (2:00 – 6:00 PM ET).

FOX SUPER BOWL SUNDAY is the super-sized Super Bowl edition of FOX NFL SUNDAY, America’s highest-rated and most-watched NFL pregame show for 20 straight seasons.  Co-hosts Terry Bradshaw and Curt Menefee and analysts Howie Long, Michael Strahan, Jimmy Johnson, along with NFL Insider Jay Glazer and others set the stage like no one else can in the hours directly leading up to kick-off.  Included in the four-hour football extravaganza, the first bi-state Super Bowl pregame show which begins in New York’s Times Square and concludes in New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium, are several compelling features and storylines that demonstrate how connected the nation’s No. 1 media market is to one of the nation’s top sports.  While much is still being planned, highlights of what’s already on tap include:

–      LOMBARDI – A Brooklyn native, the renowned head coach and general manager Vince Lombardi’s name is synonymous with passion for the game, respect from his players and winning on the gridiron.  Rightfully, much attention is paid to legendary Lombardi’s success as head coach of the Green Bay Packers, guiding them to victory in Super Bowl I and II, but few outside the New York region recall his deep local roots, from his playing days at Fordham, to coaching at St. Cecilia’s in New Jersey and the Cadets at West Point, to the NFL sidelines in 1954 during the New York Giants’ mid-20th Century glory days. His Eminence, Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York, hosts the feature on Lombardi, a man of faith who considered joining the priesthood early in his life and was laid to rest at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York.

–       NEW YORK TITLE GAMES – The 1958 NFL Championship Game between the Baltimore Colts and New York Giants has been dubbed The Greatest Game Ever Played, and it’s credited with vaulting the NFL into the nation’s consciousness like never before.  This game is the centerpiece of a feature dedicated to New York-based football title games with commentary from NFL Hall of Famers and players from past generations who recount their experiences playing for it all on the nation’s biggest stage.

–       WICKED WEATHER – No one knows whether it will be 45 degrees with light winds or 10 degrees and snowing on Super Bowl Sunday, but while cold temperatures and snowy conditions could play a role in this year’s contest, many of the NFL’s most memorable games have been played in inclement weather.   Stories of these unique and unforgettable games are packaged and told as never before.

–       DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE – In a Super Bowl tradition that began in 2002, during the post-9/11 Super Bowl pregame, FOX Sports again pays tribute to America’s active military troops and veterans with a reading of the Declaration of Independence, the cornerstone document upon which America was built.  An original musical composition entitled “Heart of Independence” underscores the reading of the document’s eloquent and enduring words, with contributions from prominent NFL owners, past and present NFL superstars including: Robert Kraft; Joe Andruzzi; Matt Chatham with members of the Boston Police Department; Chuck Bednarik; London Fletcher and Art Monk; John Mara; Steve Tisch and Woody Johnson; Aaron Rodgers and Clay Matthews; Chuck Pagano, Andrew Luck and Raymond Berry; Jim Kelly and Thurman Thomas; Art Shell; Tony Gonzalez; JJ Watt, the Watt Family and the Houston Fire Dept.; and Adrian Peterson.

–       SUMMERALL TRIBUTE – George Allen “Pat” Summerall, who passed away in April, was one of America’s most beloved broadcasters.  Best known for his work first as an NFL analyst and then as a play-by-play announcer, his partnerships with Tom Brookshire and John Madden are legendary.  FOX Sports spotlights Summerall’s on-field contributions as a member of the New York Giants in the 1950s and those he made in the broadcast booth.  Twenty seasons ago, Summerall and Madden gave a fledgling NFL on FOX instant credibility with the public, so it is more than fitting that FOX Sports honors and remembers Summerall this day.

–       RED CARPET – As we’ve come to know, the Super Bowl isn’t just about who’s playing, but also about who’s attending.  As has become a FOX Sports custom, FOX SUPER BOWL SUNDAY covers the red carpet-arrival of the sports and entertainment celebrities attending Super Bowl XLVIII in a manner befitting a major Hollywood event.  FOX NFL SUNDAY’s Michael Strahan and FOX SPORTS LIVE’s Charissa Thompson chat with the big name celebrities right outside MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ, as they arrive for the big game.  Strahan and Thompson also host the pregame musical performances carried throughout the show.

Once the game is underway, play-by-play announcer Joe Buck and analyst, NFL Hall of Famer Troy Aikman, television’s premier NFL broadcast team, call the action with Pam Oliver and Erin Andrews reporting from the sidelines.  For Buck and Aikman, it is their fourth Super Bowl assignment, while Oliver is working her seventh, having patrolled the sidelines for the first six FOX Sports has carried.  This is the first time Andrews has worked the Super Bowl for the broadcasting network.  Rules and officiating expert Mike Pereira also is available in the booth during the game to offer insight into the controversial plays and penalties.  At halftime, Menefee, Bradshaw, Long, Strahan and Johnson have first-half highlights and commentary before turning it over to musical pop sensation Bruno Mars, who headlines the Pepsi Super Bowl XLVIII halftime show with special guest The Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Once a Super Bowl champion is crowned, Bradshaw guides the postgame festivities as NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell presents the Lombardi Trophy to the winning team at MetLife Stadium’s 50-yard line.  Then, just as the day began, Menefee,  Bradshaw, Long,  Strahan and Johnson close the big day with final thoughts.

The FOX SUPER BOWL SUNDAY pregame, halftime and postgame coverage is produced by Bill Richards and directed by Stephanie Medina.  FOX Sports’ exclusive game coverage of Super Bowl XLVIII is produced by Richie Zyontz and directed by Rich Russo.  David Neal is Coordinating Producer, Super Bowl XLVIII on FOX.  John Entz is Executive Producer, FOX Sports.  Eric Shanks is President, COO and Executive Producer of FOX Sports
