Notes from TNT’s NBA Coverage – Thursday, December 26, 2013

December 27, 2013 By admin

nba-on-tntNotes from TNT’s NBA Coverage – Thursday, December 26, 2013

TNT’s NBA coverage continues Thursday, Jan. 9, at 8 p.m. ET with doubleheader action featuring the Miami Heat @ New York Knicks followed by the Oklahoma City Thunder @ Denver Nuggets at 10:30 p.m.

****    ****    ****    ****
TNT NBA Tip-off presented by AutoTrader.com
Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal and Kenny Smith

Smith on Rockets center Dwight Howard needing to show consistency: “He’s playing fantastic [now] but it has to be a continuation, it can’t be a 10-game stint.”

Barkley on teams taking hard fouls on Clippers forward Blake Griffin: “I like Blake as a player but he has to stop this…people are disrespecting him. They are just hitting him for the hell of it and at some point, he has to knock the hell out of someone.”

O’Neal on Griffin: “He’s a great player and knows he’s going to take a hard foul…on a break, when he knows he’s going to get a hard foul, he has to make sure…they feel it as well.”

****    ****    ****    ****
Memphis Grizzlies (92) at Houston Rockets (100)
Marv Albert (play-by-play) and Chris Webber (analyst) with Craig Sager (reporter)

Webber on the Grizzlies trying to define their new identity: “It’s really hard to define who the Grizzlies are. They have two big guys but they are playing finesse basketball…which is something you never thought you’d see Memphis do. So they’re trying to establish their new identity.”

Webber on Grizzlies center Zach Randolph: “You want Memphis to keep that grind mentality because they have one of the best grinders in the NBA in Zach Randolph.”

****    ****    ****    ****
Sprint Halftime Report
Johnson, Barkley, O’Neal, Smith

Smith on the Grizzlies: “They have to get back to playing inside-out if they want to win.”

Barkley on the Rockets needing to get the ball inside to Dwight Howard: “Big guys don’t normally run the floor but if you get your big guys to run the floor, you have to reward them. Dwight is doing a fantastic job of getting up and down the floor; they’ve got to get him the ball.”

****    ****    ****    ****
Webber on Rockets centers Dwight Howard and Omer Asik: “[Asik is] an incredible player and to have him and Dwight together on the same team is something that most teams don’t have. They could have the best center in the league [Howard] and the best backup [Asik]. They could be a heck of a combination if they were to stay together.”

Webber on Randolph: “He is a guy you just trust in the paint.”

****    ****    ****    ****
Los Angeles Clippers (112) at Portland Trail Blazers (116) in OT
Kevin Harlan (play-by-play) and Steve Kerr (analyst) with Lewis Johnson (reporter)

Kerr on the Trail Blazers: “They are the most efficient offense in the league.”

Kerr on Clippers’ Jamal Crawford: “He’s a natural scorer. He can score from deep or inside. That’s his mentality, to always attack. That’s why he’s suited to come off the bench.”

Kerr on Clippers’ DeAndre Jordan: “He’s taken a big leap this year in terms of his production and his defensive awareness. He has been fantastic for his team.”

****    ****    ****    ****
Sprint Halftime Report
Johnson, Barkley, O’Neal, Smith

Barkley on the Clippers: “If the Clippers get into the open court, they are going to be successful. They struggle in the half-court because Chris Paul has to do so much.”

****    ****    ****    ****
Kerr on Trail Blazers forward Nicolas Batum: “He’s a tremendous all-around player. He’s a ball-mover on offense. The ball never sticks in his hand. But when he’s given the ball in a late game situation, he has the ability to break down the defense and create a shot for himself.”

Kerr on the Clippers: “It’s amazing what has happened with this Clippers franchise in the last few years. Between Blake Griffin and his spectacular dunks and Chris Paul and his guard play, they’ve become one of the marquee franchises in the NBA.”

****    ****    ****    ****
Inside the NBA presented by Kia
Johnson, Barkley, O’Neal, Smith

Barkley on the Blazers: “Nicolas Batum and Wesley Matthews are the two guys that make everything go [for the Blazers].”

Smith on the best team in the Western Conference: “Oklahoma City is playing the best but they are unproven. To me, San Antonio is the best [team].”

Barkley on Zach Randolph: “If you don’t like Z-Bo, you don’t like basketball.”

Quotes From Week 16 Edition of NFL Network’s ‘NFL GameDay Final’

December 23, 2013 By admin

NFL-Gameday-Logo
Quotes from NFL GameDay Final

– “Yes. Without a doubt…Denver or Indy, they don’t win unless Peyton plays well; there is no ‘keep them in the game’ defense or ‘let’s go to the running game’ – he doesn’t have any of that help. I’m going to call him the best ever.” – Marshall Faulk on if Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning can be called the greatest quarterback in NFL history

– “It’s hard for me to call you one of the greatest of all-time if you were not even the greatest in your era…Tom Brady has done some wonderful things and won Super Bowls. I love Peyton Manning but it’s hard for me to say that.” – Michael Irvin on if Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning is the greatest quarterback in NFL history

– “This team runs better under Josh [McCown]. It runs through [Matt] Forte and it runs better with Josh.” – Marshall Faulk on the Chicago Bears, who lost 54-11 to the Philadelphia Eagles

– “If it was about the playoffs, you would have just kept playing the hot quarterback; there was no reason to take Josh McCown out and [Jay] Cutler you could have just waited. But they need to find out if Cutler is worth this $100 million he is slated to get.” – Marshall Faulk on the Chicago Bears quarterback situation

– “Tony Romo showed up and he made the plays, and he made the plays at crucial moments. That was the difference.” – Michael Irvin on Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, who threw for 226 yards and two touchdowns in the 24-23 win over the Washington Redskins

– “We talk about Cam’s growth throughout the year – the growth within this game. He said he didn’t have the game he wanted to have but he had the drive, and he did what he needed to do to get his team the [win].” – Marshall Faulk on Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, who was 3-of-5 for 65 yards and a touchdown on the game-winning drive against the New Orleans Saints

– “When you get a guy that athletic, the problem they usually have is at any sign of pressure, they’re gone because they’re so athletic…He stood in that pocket no matter what went on around him. That was true growth.” – Michael Irvin on Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton

– “He is the mismatch guy now. With no [Rob Gronkowski], he is going to be the guy that is going to draw the coverage.” – Marshall Faulk on New England Patriots running back Shane Vereen

– “[The Pittsburgh Steelers] have the pedigree and the veterans, and they’re sneaky right now.” – Marshall Faulk on the team who would be the most dangerous No. 6 seed in the playoffs

– “Staying healthy, running hard [and] being a dependable back in this league is something that this kid has learned how to do.” – Marshall Faulk on San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews

Notes & Quotes From “FOOTBALL NIGHT IN AMERICA” – Week 16

December 23, 2013 By admin

FNIA-nfl-nbc“It puts even more pressure on you to win a Super Bowl.” – Harrison on Peyton Manning’s TD-pass record

“We all assumed they were unbeatable at home and Arizona showed the formula today.” – Dungy on winning in Seattle

“You can’t make me believe in the Cincinnati Bengals.” – Harrison on the Bengals playoff prospects

NEW YORK – Dec. 22, 2013 – Following are the highlights for Football Night in America, the most-watched pre-game show in sports. Bob Costas opened the show live from Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pa., where the Philadelphia Eagles are hosting the Chicago Bears. Costas was joined on site by Al Michaels (play-by-play), Cris Collinsworth (analyst), and two-time Super Bowl winner and Super Bowl XL MVP Hines Ward.

Dan Patrick co-hosted Football Night from famous Studio 8H at NBC’s 30 Rockefeller Plaza studios in New York City. He was joined by Super Bowl-winning head coach Tony Dungy; two-time Super Bowl winner Rodney Harrison; Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk on NBCSN and NBCSports.com; and Peter King of Sports Illustrated. Alex Flanagan reported from M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Md., on the Patriots-Ravens game.

Costas interviewed Bears head coach Marc Trestman and Eagles QB Nick Foles for tonight’s show.

Following are highlights from Football Night in America:

ON SEAHAWKS-CARDINALS

Dungy on Cardinals win: “What happened today is you saw what you have to do to win. You’ve got to go up there with a great defense. You’ve got to be able to match Seattle’s defense, and Arizona did that today.”

Harrison on Cardinals defense: “They loaded up the box, they tried to stop the run and they played man-to-man coverage. They dared those wide receivers to try and beat them on the outside. They need Percy Harvin, if he can come back.”

Dungy on how to win in Seattle: “We all assumed they were unbeatable at home and Arizona showed the formula today.”

ON PANTHERS

Harrison (joking): “I told both of you guys that the Carolina Panthers would make the playoffs.”

Harrison: “I look at Carolina and that’s a team that can be really scary and dangerous in the playoffs.”

ON SAINTS

Costas: “With all due respect to the Saints, they are very, very good at home, and less than mediocre on the road.”

ON BRONCOS

Dungy on Peyton Manning’s record: “I think this does mean a lot…showing the world that he is back.”

Harrison: “When you break records, it’s a great achievement. But I think it puts even more pressure on you to win a Super Bowl.”

Dungy: “Von Miller getting hurt today, that is a big loss. Now, I’m not so afraid to go into Denver when they don’t have that pass rusher.”

ON COLTS

Patrick: “Are they back?”

Dungy: “Whenever they can protect Andrew Luck, they’re back.”

Dungy: “This was a huge win for them.”

ON TEXANS

Patrick on team’s 13th straight loss: “And you thought the Astros were bad.”

ON COWBOYS

Dungy: “This is what I care about, Dallas Cowboys needing a clutch drive, and they got one from Tony Romo. They’re alive to set up another win-or-go-home game next week with Philadelphia.”

Dungy: “They win next week, they’re in. They’ve got to be thrilled about that because they haven’t played great football, but they still have one game to do it and get it done next week.”

ON DOLPHINS

Harrison: “This offensive line today just got straight up dominated.”

Patrick on offensive line troubles: “It was a bad line and then you get rid of two starters (Incognito and Martin).”

ON BENGALS

Harrison: “You can’t make me believe in the Cincinnati Bengals.”

Dungy on the playoffs: “They can win at home…If they go to Denver without Von Miller, they’ve got a chance.”

ON LIONS

Dungy on loss to Giants: “You’ve got to win this game.”

Harrison: “It’s the same story each and every year…if you look at the talent level of this team, there’s no reason why this team shouldn’t vie for an NFC championship every year. Something’s wrong.”

ON GIANTS

Dungy on Eli Manning: “He wasn’t great all day, but he was great in the clutch.”

ON BEARS

Collinsworth on offense: “One of the most exciting teams in football right now.”

Collinsworth: “This team looks like an NBA team coming off the bus. They’re very tall.”

Costas: “I get the reference. I’m very sensitive to these height issues.”

Ward on Alshon Jeffrey: “This year, he’s a different ballplayer. He’s full of confidence, using his hands to catch the ball, and using his big body. He’s a great complement to Brandon Marshall.”

Ward on QB controversy: “I love how decisive Coach Trestman is.”

ON EAGLES

Dungy on playoff seeding and impact of tonight’s game: “You always want to be three rather than four.”

Dungy: “I think the running game is going to determine who wins this game.”

ON COACHES ON HOT SEAT

Coaches likely out next year

Florio: Mike Shanahan (Washington) and Dennis Allen (Oakland).

Coaches likely out next year if they don’t make the playoffs

King: Jason Garrett (Dallas) and Jim Schwartz (Detroit).

Coaches in trouble

King: Rex Ryan (Jets), Mike Munchak (Tennessee) and Leslie Frazier (Minnesota).

Coaches who will survive

King: Greg Schiano (Tampa Bay) and Tom Coughlin (Giants).

Florio: Joe Philbin (Miami) and Mike Smith (Atlanta).

ON COLLEGE COACHES

King: “With the top college coach, David Shaw, expected to stay at Stanford, look for Bill O’Brien at Penn State, who’s interested in NFL openings, to be the No. 1 college candidate to jump to the NFL.”

INTERVIEW: Below are highlights of Costas’ interviews with Trestman and Foles.

MARC TRESTMAN WITH BOB COSTAS

Trestman on continuing with Jay Cutler: “I knew right after he was injured that he was our quarterback, and when he was ready to play he would go back in and it was really as simple as that. I wanted everybody to know that when Jay was healthy he would be back in to play.  And once I said that I planned on sticking with it because I felt that it was in the best interest of the team.”

Trestman on his unusual journey to become a head coach: “I can only say that at the present time I look back and I see why it all happened the way it did. I’ve enjoyed every day since the day I got the job and able to use whatever skill sets that I have to help put our coaches and players in the best position to win on a daily basis.”

NICK FOLES WITH BOB COSTAS

On his ascent from backup to starter: “I’m very fortunate to be playing in the NFL, and that’s how I look at it. Every day is a blessing to be playing, tomorrow is not guaranteed for anyone. I’ve had many friends that had to stop playing … so I’m thankful every day.”

On being fined for an illegal block: “It doesn’t happen often. When I handed off the ball for the reverse, there was a lot of pressure so I did peek back around. The referee had the right call. It was an illegal block. I’ll remember that and be smarter.”

fox-nflBradshaw: Jason Garrett is No Head Coach, He’s is Just a

Yes Man For Jerry Jones

Johnson: I love the Cowboys but I Don’t Like the Way This Team is Structured

Glazer Reports Rex Ryan Told Team He Believes He’ll be Fired at the End of This Season

—————————————————————————

Analyst Terry Bradshaw on Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett and Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz:  “[Jason] Garrett in Dallas is no head coach.  He never should’ve been hired in the first place.  He’s just a yes man for Jerry [Jones].  You look at Schwartz over in Detroit I don’t know what he is.  I know one thing he’s no head coach either.  The problem is, and everyone has already stated it, you don’t commit turnovers in Detroit.  You don’t drop passes in Detroit.  You have to be held accountable.  You must have fear as a player.  A coach has to control that locker room which means he has to control those players.”

—————————————————————————

Analyst Jimmy Johnson on who is responsible for the Cowboys devastating defeat last Sunday in which they blew a 23-point halftime lead:  “Let’s take a look at who is responsible for this debacle: [Bill] Callahan, [Tony] Romo, receivers not running the routes, Jason Garrett.  If a player leaves the field early, who is he responsible to, who does he answer to, where is the fear?  To have a championship team you have one voice, one leader, and that’s the head coach.  Now, I love the Cowboys, but I don’t like the way this team is structured.”

—————————————————————————

FOX NFL Insider Jay Glazer reports that New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan told his team he believes he’ll be fired at the end of the season:  “Last night in the Jets team meeting, talk about a motivational tool, Jets head coach Rex Ryan walked into his team meeting and said, ‘guys, word on the street, I’m getting fired.  I’m not coming back.  I’ve got two weeks left.’  Rex has always viewed himself as a sacrificial lamb and whether or not that decision has been made, we don’t know, but he walked in there and said ‘guys, that’s the word on the street, I’ve got two weeks left here, you guys ride with me.  Roll with me here for the last two weeks we’ll see what happens.’”

—————————————————————————

FOX NFL Insider Jay Glazer learned that Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier could save his job in the final 2 weeks of the season:  “3 or 4 weeks ago I would’ve said, no it’s an absolute forgone conclusion that Leslie Frazier is out.  That’s not the case anymore.  There’s a slight window open.  These last 2 weeks could be very big for Leslie Frazier.  I still think it leans more towards him leaving but at least now their will be a conversation.”

—————————————————————————

Analyst Howie Long discusses whether or not it was a cheap shot by Pittsburgh Steelers Terence Garvin on Cincinnati Bengals punter Kevin Huber in last week’s game.  Garvin was fined $25,000:  “At some point the punter becomes a football player and he was in position to make a play.”

—————————————————————————

Analyst Michael Strahan says it’s very risky for a team to start a rookie offensive tackle in such a big game, as the New Orleans Saints start rookie Terron Armstead today:  “It’s very risky.  They may need to keep somebody in to help Armstead which is a disruption to their passing game.”

—————————————————————————

Analyst Howie Long previews the New Orleans Saints matchup versus the Carolina Panthers: “With Carolina, pressure equals coverage.  If they get it, they win.  If they don’t, they lose.”

—————————————————————————

Analyst Terry Bradshaw chooses his AFC Champion:  “You know what, they’re [Baltimore Ravens] going to jump right into the Super Bowl.”

—————————————————————————-

Analyst Michael Strahan says the Detroit Lions are sloppy:  “Here is a team with one of the best offenses in the league but their undisciplined.  Last week, they couldn’t catch the ball.  They can’t hold onto the ball.  Defensively, the last 4 games they’ve lost, they’ve lost with a fourth quarter lead.”

Sunday NFL Countdown Notes and Quotes: Week 16

December 23, 2013 By admin

Sunday NFL Countdown logoHost Chris Berman and analysts Cris Carter, Mike Ditka, Tom Jackson and Keyshawn Johnson previewed today’s NFL games on ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown. Highlights:

On what concerns the panelists going into today’s matchups …

Jackson: “Kirk Cousins – a backup quarterback – is playing. The last two backup quarterbacks put up 82 points against the Cowboys between them. I think Kirk Cousins is licking his chops to get after the Dallas secondary and if they don’t win today, a lot of people will be getting pink slips.”

Carter: “My concern today is matched by (head coach) Sean Payton’s concern with his New Orleans Saints – the concern of going on the road. They are playing a quality team that matches up well against them and looking for some vengeance to take over the NFC South.”

Johnson: “My concern would be the same as Tom Brady’s – can’t score on the red zone, New England Patriots. With Gronk (Rob Gronkowski) out of the lineup, they are only scoring 38 percent which, right now, is the lowest in the National Football League. They can’t figure out how to get into the end zone.”

Ditka: “Success is about taking advantage of opportunity. The Bears are in position to take advantage of opportunity. You’ve got two games. You control your own destiny, that’s unique. 14 games played, two to go. You can win two games and you are in the playoffs.”

Colts at Chiefs – Which team will make a statement in today’s game?

Johnson: “When you go outdoors and you are a dome team, and especially in this type of weather, you have to prove to everybody that you can play in this type of environment. It is a perfect opportunity for (QB) Andrew Luck to show that he’s not Peyton Manning. Because, if you put too many of these things together, that’s what people will start to say – ‘he’s just another Peyton Manning, here we go again.’ It is big for them to prove they can win in this environment.”

Jackson: “Andrew Luck is now the quarterback of this football team, but it is still a Peyton Manning-like football team. They don’t run the ball well, don’t defend the run well, but Peyton Manning let them play with the lead. They’ve been playing from behind an awful lot this year. The loss of Reggie Wayne took them down about a touchdown in scoring. I’m looking today at special teams – 31st in punt coverage, 26th in kickoff coverage. Against the Chiefs, who may have the best special team in the National Football League.”

Berman: “I would say one thing, those Colts wins earlier this year, they weren’t all Reggie Wayne. It was physical. They beat San Francisco physically. So don’t sleep on them. Don’t sleep on the Colts.”

How will Andrew Luck fare against the Chiefs, the noise and Arrowhead environment?

Jackson: “I don’t think he’s going to fare very well. The noise is problematic, the stadium and the place he is playing is problematic, but he’s being asked to do too much. I talked about the team being built for Peyton Manning and still trying to make that adjustment. He was the leader in rushing touchdowns last year, tied for the lead in that this year. He’s also leading his team in rushing first downs. He’s also leading them in yards per rush. That’s not his job. This is not an option offense. They are not calling his number. He’s got nobody else to go to, to help him offensively. That’s the problem for him at Arrowhead today.”
Ditka: “He is the whole team. Kansas City is too balanced – they have a good offense, they have a good special team. I don’t think the Colts can stand up to them. (Andrew) Luck is good, but he is not a one-man show.”

Carter: “What I don’t like is – this team is very similar to Peyton’s teams in their lack of physicality – inability to run the ball and not great on defense.”

Johnson: “This year, dome teams going outdoors – 1-9. You go back to last year, against the New England Patriots, they had to go there in November, they were slaughtered. New England hung 59 on them.”

On whether the Dallas Cowboys will recover from their inconsistency throughout the season …

Jackson: “Their history tells me that they cannot. I said in week 2 that they would be 8-8. At 7-7, they certainly could be headed to 8-8. I see this as (head coach) Jason Garrett vs. Jason Garrett … When the Dallas Cowboys are ahead in a football game, they still throw the ball 65 percent of the time. Everybody else in the National Football League when they have a lead, they run the ball 47 percent, almost 50 percent of the time. So, the Dallas Cowboys are unusual in the amount of throws that they make when they have a lead.”

Carter: “This defense, 300 yards a game. Before you even go on the field, you know you have 300 yards of passing a game. It is hard to win. How are they going to get better when you know the defense will give up 300 yards passing, probably 120 yards rushing? With that amount of offense in the NFL, it is hard to win games consistently and that’s why they are 500.”

Johnson: “When you think of the Dallas Cowboys of the olden days …they had leaders on both sides of the ball. Yes, there is Jason Witten, Tony Romo and DeMarcus Ware, and I played with all three of them. They are just guys that go to work, do what the coaches ask and just try to play their game. They don’t have that guy that can just grab everybody and get them going in the right direction.”

Ditka: “They have no concept of how to play defense. That’s bad. That goes back to coaching.”

Carter: “The Cowboys has been one of my favorite teams since the 70s – their helmets, everything. They always had star players. Besides (WR) Dez Bryant, what kind of stars do they have on the team?”

On what each panelist learned from a Dez Bryant “Soundtracks” segment Countdown …

Carter: “Dez Bryant is as close to (Cowboys Hall of Fame wide receiver) Michael Irvin in everything he does than any player that has put on the uniform. That’s part of the reason why he wears No. 88. Now the problem is, Dez doesn’t have the horses that Michael had to go with it. When Michael used to go up and down the sideline to say the same thing, he was saying it to Troy Aikman, Emmith Smith, Darren Woodson, all these great players.  I like Dez Bryant, and I’ve talked to too many people in the organization who like the kid. The kid’s got a good heart. The kid wants to win … He’s trying to win. Regardless of how much money you make, you’re trying to win these games. Pro football is about winning.”

Johnson: “I didn’t learn anything from watching it because I already knew it. Firsthand knowledge, I lived it. I played the position. I understand exactly the emotion that Dez Bryant had on the football field … The interesting thing about all of this is that, you can never be right. Even though he walked off the field, and I will never do that, had he stayed on the sideline and said anything to any of his players, he’d have been in the wrong anyway.”

Jackson: “The thing I learned from the ‘Soundtracks’ is how involved he is in wanting to win football games … You do not leave the football field without your team.”

Ditka: “Where would this team be without him on offense?”

Previewing keys to the Patriots-Ravens matchup …

Jackson: “You have 23 catches between (Danny) Amendola and (Julian) Edelman, most of them took place in between the 20-yard lines. But when you get into the contested area, down in the red zone, where you have to throw balls up and hope that your guys are going to come down with them. When you are talking about guys who are 5’10”, 5’9”, it is impossible for them to make those plays. Statistically this year, no one has thrown more balls to shorter people than Tom Brady.”

Johnson: “If you look at the Baltimore Ravens and what they are capable of doing, if they run the football and keep the football out of (QB Joe) Flacco’s hands, they have an opportunity to win the game.”

Previewing keys to the Bears at Eagles game …

Ditka: “This is not too hard to figure out. Minnesota put 47 points up, 382 yards, Matt Cassel carved this defense apart. I know they both don’t have defense. The Bears have a little bit better set of offensive weapons with big receivers, tight ends and (running back Matt) Forte.”

Carter: “You look at last week’s game, people talking about (QB Jay) Cutler making the comeback and the coach making the decision. Late in that football game, in the fourth quarter, with Chicago down by seven, 11 minutes to go,

Cutler makes a bad read, throws into coverage, and (WR) Alshon Jeffrey turns into superman. That’s why I don’t trust Cutler.”

Following reporter Josina Anderson’s feature on Green Bay Packer Jermichael Finley, who is rehabbing from a severe neck injury and plans to return to football against the wishes of his five-year old son, Countdown panel discussed the pressures of football vs. family.

Jackson: “I think he will take his family’s wishes into consideration, but you are the guy taking the risk – when you go out on the field. That’s why none of us can tell another person when they are to leave the game of football or if they need to go on. There are all kinds of considerations that Jermichael has in his mind. Some of them, you heard at the end, financial. He’s prepared to do this. This is the thing that he’s best at. Is he willing to give it up while he is in his prime? He said he doesn’t want to do that … Jermichael’s risk has become greater. That’s under consideration for him.”

Johnson: “It is different for everybody. Jermichael Finley has already won a Super Bowl, although he didn’t play in the game. He wasn’t a first round pick. He hasn’t really gotten to the big money. He has a five-year-old son that he loves dearly. But how much does a five-year-old really understand that your dad is really working trying to secure the family for the rest of his life?”

December 23, 2013 By admin

NFL-GameDayMorningNews & Sound Bites From Week 16 Editions of NFL Network’s NFL GAMEDAY FIRST & NFL GAMEDAY MORNING

Quick Quotes from NFL GameDay First & NFL GameDay Morning

– “By far the most undisciplined quarterback in the National Football League.” – Kurt Warner on Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford

– “If this team gets in the playoffs, they are a very dangerous team.” – Steve Mariucci on the Miami Dolphins

– “You wanted to give him that power – he had that power and he made a decision that did not work…I can’t pay him $100 million and then say I have to stop you from trying to win a game.” – Michael Irvin on Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo

– “Each and every week it’s something different. They have so many problems it’s hard to put a finger on one problem to fix.” – Marshall Faulk on the Dallas Cowboys

– “The head coach needs to be the voice of the program during the season. When the owner or the GM is the voice, then the head coach and the players have to continually react to that voice.” – Charley Casserly on the Dallas Cowboys and owner Jerry Jones

– “I put this loss squarely on the shoulders of the Cowboys coaching staff.” – Sterling Sharpe on the Dallas Cowboys’ loss to the Green Bay Packers in Week 15

– “Cam [Newton] has to be Superman the whole day. He has to match the play of Drew Brees.” – Michael Irvin on Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton

Quotes from NFL GameDay First

Every Sunday morning at 7:00 AM ET, NFL Network is first on the field with NFL GameDay First. Host Melissa Stark, co-host/analyst Sterling Sharpe, and analyst Shaun O’Hara provide the first analysis of the day’s games, while NFL Network reporters stationed across the league report from stadiums with the first on-location reports of the day. This week, Hall of Fame defensive end Richard Dent joined as a guest analyst.

– “I put this loss squarely on the shoulders of the Cowboys coaching staff.” – Sterling Sharpe on the Dallas Cowboys’ loss to the Green Bay Packers in Week 15

– “I don’t think the Dallas Cowboys can win [perception-wise and in the media] unless they get in the playoffs and make it to the Super Bowl.” – Sterling Sharpe on the Dallas Cowboys

– “Jerry [Jones] needs to look at two things. One, the best talent they have had has come when Bill Parcells and Jimmy Johnson were coaching. Jerry Jones doesn’t go out and scout players; he listens to his people. I think he needs to make sure he has the right people talking to him because the talent hasn’t been as good as it was when Parcells and Johnson were coaching. The second thing is I think the head coach needs to be the voice of the program during the season. When the owner or the GM is the voice, then the head coach and the players have to continually react to that voice. I don’t think it’s anything Jerry says because I think he is very good with media, but I think the head coach should be the spokesperson for the team during the season.” – Charley Casserly on the issues he sees with the Dallas Cowboys

– “I have them being very vanilla but I think both these teams will try to win the game.” – Sterling Sharpe on the potential the Indianapolis Colts and Kansas City Chiefs could play each other twice in the span of three games

– “We’ve lost five different guys on the defense so right now we’re playing third or fourth-team guys. And we’re winning so we’re actually gelling at the right time.” – Richard Dent on the Chicago Bears

– “Reggie Bush said on a radio interview this week that the Lions were undisciplined. And when you speak to undisciplined, that goes right to the head coach. We’re in a business where we like to cast blame. Let’s fix blame and forget the problem. You want to fix blame on the Detroit Lions? Someone has to pay the price? It’s got to be Jim Schwartz.” – Sterling Sharpe on whether Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz could be in jeopardy of losing his job

Quotes from NFL GameDay Morning

NFL GameDay Morning is the most comprehensive pregame show on Sunday morning, airing at 9:00 AM ET for four hours on NFL Network and taking viewers straight up to kickoff. Host Rich Eisen joins analysts Steve Mariucci, Marshall Faulk, Kurt Warner, Warren Sapp and Michael Irvin to bring fans the latest news, injury reports, pregame analysis and game previews. Additionally, NFL Media Insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Silver provide the latest inside information from around the league.

– “You wanted to give him that power – he had that power and he made a decision that did not work. This is the other side of it. I can’t pay him $100 million and then say I have to stop you from trying to win a game.” – Michael Irvin on Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo and the comments in the offseason the team wanted him to have more of a say in the offense

– “What I do need Dallas to do is open up a lead and let DeMarco Murray become what Emmitt Smith was for us: the greatest finisher in a game. It removes from Tony Romo from having those late-game issues if you’re up and you’re able to run.” – Michael Irvin on the Dallas Cowboys

– “One week it’s [Tony] Romo throwing interceptions, the next week they can’t run the football, the following week the defense can’t stop anybody from running the ball and then they can’t stop anybody from throwing the ball. Each and every week it’s something different. They have so many problems it’s hard to put a finger on one problem to fix.” – Marshall Faulk on the Dallas Cowboys

– “This is all about the defense. This defense has nobody that steps up at critical moments.” – Kurt Warner on the Dallas Cowboys

– “There is no way and under no circumstance do you leave the field early for [any] reason at all. Period.” – Michael Irvin on Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant leaving the field before the end of the game last week

– “I expect the Carolina Panthers to control the football methodically – they’re the best in the business; they have the fewest three-and-outs in the league…Carolina will play well enough to win.” – Steve Mariucci on the New Orleans Saints – Carolina Panthers game

– “They have to keep the game close, keep it front of them and Cam [Newton] has to be Superman the whole day. He has to match the play of Drew Brees.” – Michael Irvin on quarterback Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers facing the New Orleans Saints

– “I don’t think there is a team in this league that has a quarterback that takes as many chances, that feels like he can make every throw…By far the most undisciplined quarterback in the National Football League. Makes a lot of plays but we also see what he does on the other side of things.” – Kurt Warner on Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford

– “If this team gets in the playoffs, they are a very dangerous team.” – Steve Mariucci on the Miami Dolphins

– “The Miami Dolphins must go on the road to Buffalo, a place that they haven’t had a lot of success, and play the type of football that they have been playing. Treat this game like it’s New England at home – that’s what they have to do…You have to go out there and win this game, and not expect to win this game.” – Marshall Faulk on the Miami Dolphins facing the Buffalo Bills

– “They’re in a must-win situation…I felt like it was very disappointing watching how they came out and played against the Steelers. The start of that game was horrendous.” – Marshall Faulk on the Cincinnati Bengals

NFL Media Insiders Ian Rapoport & Mike Silver

On Dallas Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray:

Ian Rapoport: “I’m told DeMarco Murray grumbled to teammates about not getting the ball enough. He doesn’t understand why [Tony] Romo always seems to choose pass instead of run. As Murray knows, he is 10-0 when gets the ball 20 or more times. I’m told the relationship between Romo and Murray is frosty, a little bit of a growing rift there. Surprising that some pettiness would creep in at a crucial point in the season but that’s what’s happening.”

On Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett:

Mike Silver: “Jason Garrett went to Stephen Jones, the Cowboys Executive Vice President, on Monday and said we should have run the ball more in the second half. But they’re very sensitive to the fact that he didn’t. Even with a 26-3 lead over a Packer team without Aaron Rodgers, they don’t feel as though that lead was safe; they recognized that their defense is that leaky and if you talk to Cowboys personnel people, they tell you that we have guys on this team that would not start anywhere else – might not even play anywhere else – and so that’s why they stay aggressive. You feel for Jason Garrett; his boss Jerry Jones took away his play calling responsibilities but now it falls on him with his job on the line.”

On Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick:

Rapoport: “I am now told he is open to returning to the Eagles as a backup, mainly because he loves the situation, loves Chip Kelly and Nick Foles and him have a really good relationship. That is something he would consider next year. He also could be a stopgap starter for maybe three teams as this incoming quarterback class that people thought was going to be big-time is kind of crumbling.”

Silver: “Vick has handled this great and people have noticed. I talked to Brent Celek, the Eagles tight end, earlier and he said we all have a ton of respect for the way Mike has handled this; he’s been an amazing team player. Talked to a high-ranking Eagles source and he said Vick has been the consummate pro, so yes it’s possible Vick could be back. And they haven’t given up on Matt Barkley. He had a shoulder surgery coming out of USC. They want to see a full offseason and take a look at what they’ve got. It’s possible Foles, Barkley and Vick could be back. I’m told Vick at this stage of his career, though, needs to get a little bit more into the offense and stop relying on his feet obviously to make plays.

Dungy and Harrison Preview Bears-Eagles on FNIA Coach’s Clicker Tonight at 5 p.m. ET on NBCSN

Pro Football Talk Weeknights at 5:30 p.m. ET on NBCSN

Stamford, Conn. – December 18, 2013 – Jay Cutler and the NFC North-leading Chicago Bears (8-6) travel to Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pa., to take on Nick Foles and the NFC East-leading Eagles (8-6) on NBC’s Sunday Night Football. Coverage begins with Football Night In America at 7 p.m. ET on NBC.

The Bears control the NFC North and their division title chances. With a win against the Eagles on Sunday, and losses by both the Lions and Packers, Chicago will clinch their division. The Bears could also win the NFC North with a win over the Eagles on Sunday, and a victory against the Packers on December 29.

The Eagles are in control of the NFC East and can also wrap up their division on Sunday night. With a win against the Bears and a loss by the Cowboys, Philadelphia will clinch the NFC East. The Eagles can also win the NFC East with a victory on Sunday night, and a win against the Cowboys on December 29. The Eagles have the NFL’s top rushing offense and rank second in the league in total offense. In addition, QB Nick Foles has the NFL’s best passer rating (117.0), and RB LeSean McCoy leads the league in rushing yards (1,343).

Calling Bears-Eagles is seven-time Emmy Award-winner Al Michaels (play-by-play), in his 28th season as the voice of the NFL’s premier primetime package; 14-time Emmy Award-winner Cris Collinsworth, who has won the Emmy for Outstanding Event Analyst in each of his four seasons in the Sunday Night Football booth; and Emmy Award-winning sideline reporter Michele Tafoya.

NBC’s coverage of Sunday Night Football is led by Emmy Award-winning coordinating producer Fred Gaudelli and Emmy Award-winning director Drew Esocoff. Sunday Night Football has won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Live Sports Series for five consecutive years. Football Night In America, the most-watched pre-game show in sports, is hosted by 25-time Emmy Award-winner Bob Costas, who will report from Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia  Pa. Costas will be joined on-site by Michaels, Collinsworth, and two-time Super Bowl winner and Super Bowl XL MVP Hines Ward.

Dan Patrick co-hosts Football Night from NBC’s famed Studio 8H at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. Patrick will be joined by Super Bowl-winning head coach Tony Dungy, two-time Super Bowl winner Rodney Harrison, Peter King of Sports Illustrated, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk on NBCSN and NBCSports.com, and  longtime NFL front office veteran and former NFL Executive of the Year Scott Pioli. Alex Flanagan will report from M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, MD, on the Patriots-Ravens game.

BEARS-EAGLES PREVIEW

“This game is going to be about defense. Which one of these defenses is finally going to be able to stand up and make plays? Chicago has not been good about the run all year. The Eagles have LeSean McCoy, who can put up yards like mad if you are not tackling well.” – Tony Dungy

“The one advantage the Chicago Bears have is their big physical receivers. Cutler can just drop back, throw the ball up there and let those 6’4” and 6’5” guys go up and get the ball. I know Eagles QB Nick Foles has struggled, but I don’t really worry about him. He’s a quality quarterback, but I do worry about the Eagles defense.” – Rodney Harrison

NEW EPISODES OF FNIA COACH’S CLICKER AND NFL TURNING POINT AIR TONIGHT ON NBCSN

NBCSN’s NFL coverage breaks down the Packers’ stunning comeback in Dallas, analyzes how Ryan Tannehill outdueled Tom Brady, and previews a pivotal Sunday Night Football showdown between the Bears and Eagles, with new episodes tonight of FNIA Coach’s Clicker at 5 p.m. ET and NFL Turning Point at 11 p.m. ET.

FNIA Coach’s Clicker, hosted by Liam McHugh with Super Bowl-winning head coach Tony Dungy and two-time Super Bowl winner Rodney Harrison, looks ahead to the weekend’s most compelling matchups, starting in Philadelphia, where the Eagles and Bears will aim to potentially clinch division titles on Sunday Night Football.

Dungy and Harrison will dissect how QB Nick Foles and RB LeSean McCoy have flourished in head coach Chip Kelly’s offense, and examine how the Philadelphia defense will attempt to stop the Bears’ offensive weapons, including RB Matt Forte and WRs Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery. In addition, Scott Pioli of Football Night In America and Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk will discuss the Bears QB situation, deciphering how Chicago should proceed heading into the offseason.

FNIA Coach’s Clicker will preview this week’s Patriots-Ravens game, revisiting their matchup from the 2013 AFC Championship Game, and highlighting how Brady and QB Joe Flacco have performed in late-game situations. The episode will also break down a key NFC South contest between the Saints and Panthers, focusing on QB Drew Brees’ success against Carolina in Week 13, and how the New Orleans defense will defend QB Cam Newton.

NFL Turning Point, hosted by Football Night In America’s Dan Patrick, looks back at a wild Week 15, highlighted by last-minute victories by the Packers and Dolphins that kept both teams’ playoff hopes alive.

NFL Turning Point reviews Cowboys-Packers, and examines a tale of two halves for both teams, as Green Bay erased a 26-3 halftime deficit en route to a 37-36 win. The program reviews how QB Tony Romo had success in the first half against the Packers defense, but faltered in the game’s final two drives, throwing two interceptions to set up Green Bay’s go-ahead score and seal their victory.

The program will also break down last Sunday’s Patriots-Dolphins game, in which Tannehill outdueled Brady, focusing on the battle between the two quarterbacks after the teams were tied, 10-10, headed into the fourth quarter. Turning Point analyzes how Brady led the Patriots down the field on a touchdown drive, only to be matched by Tannehill’s pass to WR Marcus Thigpen with 1:15 left in the game. Miami’s final drive was kept alive by Tannehill’s fourth-down conversion to TE Charles Clay, his only reception of the game.

This week’s program will also feature audio from Cam Newton from the Panthers’ 30-20 victory over the Jets last Sunday.
