On December 16, 2009 Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry fell from a moving vehicle in Charlotte, N.C. and died a day later as a result of the injuries he suffered during the accident.  In the wake of the tragedy, Henry’s mother, Carolyn Glaspy, made the decision to donate his organs.  Among the recipients were Donna Arnold, James Benton, Thomas Elliott and Brian Polk.  The four, along with their immediate families, share their struggles and jubilation over the last year while waiting for donor organs and then receiving the news.  Through the assistance of LifeShare of the Carolinas and the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, the four individuals that received Henry’s organs met for the first time on November 5, 2010.  A day later, for the first time, the recipients all met Mrs. Glaspy for an emotional meeting a year in the making.  Charlie Bloom is the producer.

TONY STEWART TO PRESENT FOURTH ANNUAL ‘STEWIE AWARDS’ LIVE ON SIRIUS NASCAR RADIO DEC. 2

Stewart and co-host Matt Yocum take the show to Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas

Annual highlight of NASCAR Champions Week honors the best, boldest and funniest moments from the NASCAR season

Special guests will include five-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion Jimmie Johnson

NEW YORK – November 24, 2010 – SIRIUS XM Radio (NASDAQ: SIRI) announced today that two-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion Tony Stewart will host the fourth annual ‘Stewie Awards’ on Thursday, December 2, live from Las Vegas on SIRIUS NASCAR Radio.

The ‘Stewies,’ the acclaimed awards show that features Stewart’s entertaining and irreverent take on the best, boldest and funniest moments from the 2010 NASCAR season, will be awarded during a live broadcast hosted by Stewart and Matt Yocum from Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas on Thursday, December 2 (9:30 pm ET / 6:30 pm PT).  The live broadcast will air nationwide on SIRIUS NASCAR Radio, channel 128 for SIRIUS subscribers and XM subscribers with the “Best of SIRIUS.”  The broadcast will be open to the public for fans in attendance in Las Vegas.

The two-hour event will feature live interviews with five-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Champion Jimmie Johnson and other drivers in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup in Las Vegas, plus other special guests.

Fans can determine the ‘Stewie Award’ winners by casting their votes online at www.sirius.com/stewieawards.

The 2010 ‘Stewies’ nominees are:

Best Original Drama – Honoring the year’s most dramatic moment or sequence.

  • Jeff Gordon vs. Jimmie Johnson: Gordon expresses post-race frustrations about Johnson to the media at Talladega.
  • Clint Bowyer wins the Sylvania 300 at Loudon on Sep. 19 but later loses win after failing an inspection for being 1/16th of an inch too high on left rear.  The loss costs the #33 team a shot at the NASCAR Sprint Cup title.
  • Dale Earnhardt Jr. drives a throwback #3 Wrangler Chevrolet in the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Daytona – the same track where his iconic father lost his life.
  • Jeff Gordon vs. Jeff Burton: After Burton collects Gordon during a caution at Texas, both drivers exit their cars and Gordon shoves Burton.  Burton later apologizes.  Gordon says he has lost respect for Burton.
  • Denny Hamlin goes from first to ninth to first in the final 15 laps of a wild overtime finish at Martinsville on Mar. 29.  Off a late pit stop, the Virginia native bullies his was to his first win of the season.

Hal Needham Award (Best Stunt Sequence) – For the year’s most spectacular crash

  • In overtime of Kobalt Tools 500 in Atlanta, Jamie McMurray causes a wreck that takes out much of the field including Mark Martin.  Asked if he likes the new “green/white/checker” rule post-race, Martin quips, “It’s good for the fans.”
  • At Samsung Mobile 500 at Texas, Jeff Gordon taps Tony Stewart, who gets bumped by Carl Edwards.  Stewart turns into Gordon and the ensuing wreck claims nearly 10 cars.
  • During Sonoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono, Elliott Sadler plows head first into SAFER barrier wall in one of the hardest impacts ever recorded by NASCAR.  As a result of numerous safety improvements made in the sport, Sadler was not injured.
  • At Talladega on October 30, Ron Hornaday’s truck ends up on its roof after flipping four times.  Hornaday crawls out of the truck on his own, grabs hat and steering wheel and laughs as crowd cheers him on.

Best Original Comedy – Honoring the year’s most entertaining “incident.”

  • After missing his pit box at Darlington on May 8, Tony Stewart suggests his crew get a bigger pit sign.
  • At Atlanta race, Stewart’s father, Nelson, shows some creativity by suggesting a new method to signal his son into the pits.  Smoke’s dad’s idea: Shine a flashlight for Tony to see!
  • Joey Logano rips Kevin Harvick to reporters at Pocono saying, “His wife wears the firesuit in the family and tells him what to do.”
  • After the Michigan race on Aug. 15, Joey Logano confronts Ryan Newman and pokes him in the stomach.  Newman appears ready to fight, but Logano tells reporters later he only asked Newman why he races him so hard.

Bonehead Move of the Year Award

  • Clint Bowyer pulls away from his pit with the jack still under the car at Dover on May 16.
  • Denny Hamlin puts a proven, three-win car into the wall during his victory burnout at Pocono on Jun. 6.
  • At Sonoma on Jun. 20 Marcos Ambrose, while leading the race, shuts off his engine to coast downhill then can’t re-fire it.  NASCAR penalizes him for being “off the pace” and he ends up finishing sixth.
  • Kasey Kahne pulls out of his pit at Phoenix with gas can still attached on Nov. 14.

“Feels Like The First Time” Award – For the most notable “first” of the NASCAR season.

  • NASCAR Hall of Fame opens and inaugural class is enshrined – Bill France Sr., Bill France Jr., Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Junior Johnson.
  • Chip Ganassi becomes the first owner to win the “Trifecta” – Daytona 500, Indianapolis 500 and Brickyard 400 – in the same year.
  • At Bristol, Kyle Busch becomes the first driver in history to win all three of NASCAR’s top racing series events (NSCS, NNS, NCTS) in the same weekend.
  • Open wheel star Danica Patrick makes her much-anticipated NASCAR debut.
  • Brad Keselowski gives Roger Penske his first NASCAR Championship by winning NASCAR Nationwide Series title.

‘Boys, Have At It” Award

  • At Atlanta on March 3, Carl Edwards “pays back” Brad Keselowski and ends up flipping Keselowski’s car onto its roof.  Edwards, though unapologetic, says he didn’t mean to flip Keselowski.  Keselowski calls for a response from NASCAR.
  • After being bumped by Kyle Busch at Bristol on Aug. 20, Brad Keselowski says he is “gonna go to work on beating [Busch’s] ass.”
  • After contact by Jeff Gordon at Martinsville on Oct. 24, Kyle Busch retaliates by putting Gordon into the wall and ending his day.
  • After several poor performances, Chad Knaus replaces Jimmie Johnson’s #48 team pit crew with the #24 crew in mid-race at Phoenix.  Change remains in place for remainder of the season and Johnson ends up winning his fifth NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship.

Best Driver2Crew Chatter Exchange – Acknowledging the year’s most memorable driver-to-pit crew communication (Visit www.sirius.com/stewieawards to hear audio of nominees)

  • Dale Earnhardt Jr. and crew chief Lance McGrew exchange colorful words about “laying down” at Bristol on Mar. 21.
  • After a series of incidents, David Reutimann’s crew chief, Rodney Childers, suggests a way to end the scuffling between his driver and Kyle Busch at Kansas on Oct. 3.
  • “The Best of” Kevin Harvick and the #29 team (montage)
  • Kyle Busch expresses his displeasure at Jimmie Johnson not letting him pass at Martinsville on Oct. 24.

Best Vocal Performance – Honoring the year’s most memorable quote (Visit www.sirius.com/stewieawards to hear audio of nominees)

  • Kevin Harvick shares his post-race thoughts on the #48 team’s luck at Fontana on Feb. 21.
  • Juan Pablo Montoya vents about teammate Jamie McMurray at Las Vegas on Feb. 28.
  • Kurt Busch comments on losing to Jimmie Johnson at Bristol on Mar. 21.
  • Actors/Comedians Adam Sandler and Kevin James deliver a memorable “Start Your Engines” command at Michigan on June 13.
  • Greg Biffle jokes with media about what it takes to win at NASCAR’s highest level at Bristol on Sep. 24.

Golden Stewie Award – Chosen by Stewart and Yocum and honoring a legendary figure from the Golden Era of racing, the winner of this award will be revealed the night of the event

“Stewie” Lifetime Achievement Award – Chosen by Stewart and Yocum, the winner of this award will be revealed the night of the event

Stewart, a two-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion (2002, 2005) and one of only 14 drivers in the history of NASCAR to win multiple Cup Series titles, has 39 Sprint Cup wins, 12 poles, 153 top-fives and 247 top-10s in 428 career starts.  Since 2009, Stewart has been an owner and driver at Stewart-Haas Racing and has qualified for the Chase for the Sprint Cup in both of his seasons with the team.

Episode Eight of ‘The Season’ on NFL.com Profiles the Relationship Between Baltimore Ravens Linebacker Ray Lewis and his Son

The eighth episode of ‘The Season’ is now available on NFL.com. This week takes a look at the relationship between Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis and his son Ray Lewis III. As a sophomore at Lake Mary Prep in Lake Mary, Florida, Lewis III is a talented football player who excels at the positions of running back, linebacker and free safety. Standing on the sidelines encouraging and cheering for him is his biggest fan: his father. As the son of a future Hall-of-Famer, Lewis III has a tremendous amount of expectations heaped upon his shoulders to follow in his father’s footsteps. Yet all Lewis wants his son to do is to be his own person. Coming from a childhood in which his father abandoned his family when he was just six years old and leaving his mother to care for six children, Lewis vows to not make the same mistakes that his own father made. They say the greatest gift a father can give his son is to believe in him, and it’s a gift Lewis continually gives to his child.

Episode eight can be found at http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-the-season/09000d5d81c5b606/The-NFL-Season-A-father-and-his-son?module=HP_video

Every week on NFL.com, a new webisode of ‘The Season’ will premiere, opening a new window into professional football to which fans and observers are usually not privy. The characters that will emerge over the next 12 weeks will spread across a broad spectrum – from quarterbacks to coaches, general managers to scouts, beer vendors to executives. ‘The Season’ is a project that’s not so much the story of the 2010 NFL season, but the tale of an NFL season – an important distinction. While who wins and who loses, who starts and who fumbles are all part of the story, they’re more incidental to the greater purpose of the piece – to provide a single, all-encompassing biography of a season.

Grambling Meets Southern As NBC Sports Presents The Bayou Classic This Saturday

November 24, 2010 By admin

Former NFL Players Aaron Taylor and Shaun King Call Game With NBC Sports’ Tom Hammond

NEW YORK – November 24, 2010 – A Thanksgiving weekend tradition continues as NBC Sports, for the 20th consecutive year, broadcasts the State Farm Bayou Classic between Southern University and Grambling State, Saturday, 2 p.m. ET from the Louisiana Superdome.

Aaron Taylor, who played tackle at Notre Dame and then in the NFL for the Green Bay Packers and San Diego Chargers and former Tulane and Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Shaun King each make their NBC Sports debut as analysts for the Bayou Classic.  They join Tom Hammond, NBC Sports voice of Notre Dame football, who will call the game.  Lewis Johnson will host the broadcast and provide interviews.

The first ever Bayou Classic, won 21-0 by Grambling, was played in New Orleans’ Tulane Stadium in 1974. This is the 37th time they have met and each school has won 18 games, but Grambling has won four of the last six, including last year’s Classic, 31-13.

One of the highlights of NBC’s broadcast is the renowned halftime show, during which the marching bands of both Southern University and Grambling State University put on an exciting display of talent. Weaved throughout the broadcast will be interviews with the head coaches and drum line battles between the bands.

The Bayou Classic on NBC Sports is produced by Rob Hyland and directed by Jeff Simon.

“As we get closer to the end, they all sort of become little, mini playoff games.” – Collinsworth

NEW YORK – November 24, 2010 – Peyton Manning and Phillip Rivers, the league’s top two leaders in passing yards, meet on “Sunday Night Football” when the Indianapolis Colts (6-4) host the San Diego Chargers (5-5) in a game neither team can afford to let slip, according to SNF analyst Cris Collinsworth. Through 10 games, Rivers has passed for 3,177 yards and is on pace for 5,083, which would leave him a yard short of Dan Marino’s NFL single-season record of 5,084 set in 1984. Manning is second in the league with 3,059 yards and is on pace for 4,894, which would rank third all time.

Calling Chargers-Colts will be six-time Emmy Award-winner Al Michaels (play-by-play), who is in his 25th season as the voice of the NFL’s premier primetime package; 11-time Emmy Award-winner Collinsworth, who last year, his first in the SNF booth, won the Emmy for outstanding event analyst; and sideline reporter Andrea Kremer about whom TV Guide said is “one of TV’s best sports correspondents.”

Coverage begins with “Football Night in America” at 7 p.m. ET Sunday with Bob Costas, who won the outstanding studio host Emmy last year, hosting live from inside the stadium. Dan Patrick will co-host “Football Night” from NBC’s 30 Rockefeller Plaza studios joined by Super Bowl-winning head coach and Emmy-nominated Tony Dungy, two-time Super Bowl winner Rodney Harrison, and Sports Illustrated’s Peter King. Alex Flanagan will report from Soldier Field in Chicago on the Eagles-Bears game.

“Football Night” (7:30-8:15 pm) is averaging 8.3 million viewers through its first 11 weeks, its most ever for that time frame and up 11 percent vs. 2009’s 7.5 million viewers.

COLLINSWORTH: “It becomes a really big game because the Colts are now, sort of, on the brink of the playoffs. The Chargers are trying to fight their way back in a division that most people still feel like they have the most talent in. But neither one of these teams can really afford to let one slip at this point. As we get closer to the end, they all sort of become little, mini playoff games.”

DUNGY ON THE CHARGERS: “San Diego has had two things going for them in the past against the Colts. The first is a great pass rush from their outside linebacker. They put a lot of pressure on Peyton without having to send extra guys. The second thing is they always presented tough matchups with their big receivers against the smaller Colts defensive backs. Rivers has had two big days in the playoffs (against the Colts).”

HARRISON ON THE COLTS: “They have guys who are really fast on turf and who play with a tremendous amount of confidence. The most important thing is after that loss to New England, the Colts are coming back home and will be playing with a sense of urgency knowing that they have to win this game against a San Diego team that is, quite frankly, not intimidated by the Colts. But the Colts play different at home.”

CLIP OF THE NIGHT

NBA TV’s Chris Webber on LeBron James’ comments that the Heat aren’t having fun

**** **** **** ****

AutoTrader.com Pre-Game Show

Ernie Johnson, Kevin McHale and Chris Webber

McHale on Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose: “He has the ball in his hands quite a bit; he’s their best player; he’s so dynamic, he finishes, attacks, his jump shot has improved. What they are trying to do is give him a lot of space by putting the ball in his hands and letting him make a lot of decisions.”

Webber on what he likes most about Derrick Rose: “I love the way Derrick Rose finishes. I think people take that for granted. All our guards in the league are great and can finish but Derrick Rose not only finishes emphatically over you but he has that great two-step hop which lets him make contact and lets him finish.  I like that because he gets to the hole so great and when he takes that spot he can actually jump in the air (which you are actually taught not to do) and try to finish and also look out to pass. So I love his ball control.”

McHale on LA Clippers forward Blake Griffin’s dunk over Knicks guard Timofey Mozgov: “You very seldom see a guy dunk a ball and see his hand get a foot above the rim. He just threw it in. He’s such a dynamic player. I love him, he rebounds and he plays hard. Right now he’s going to have to fight through a tough year with the Clippers to get better.”

NBA TV’s Chris Webber on LeBron James’ comments that the Heat aren’t having fun: “He’s being a robot. He’s not having fun, he’s not energetic. He’s not dunking on people and being exciting. The team has a commercial begging fans to come watch three of best players in the NBA play. Miami Fans, you stink. I hate saying that but you do.  I just think these guys really need to have fun. Something needs to be infused into this team; something new, something energetic, something positive.”

McHale on what the Miami Heat need to do to improve: “From a basketball standpoint, there is too much standing around. People aren’t working for each other. We have often talked about guys running; you have to run for your teammates. There is no one getting out in front of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade collapsing the defense, giving them lanes, giving them opportunities. There is not enough ball movement or body movement. They are technically doing some things that are making it really hard for them to win games in the NBA. They have got to get that fixed. Their spacing is bad, their ball movement is bad. They have to get better on the offensive end. It sounds ridiculous to say you have three of the best players in the league (and you’re) bad offensively, but they are.”

Webber on Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra:  “I think the one thing that is getting lost in this whole thing is that you want a boss that has been there and done it and can make you better. At the end of the day, we are going to say it is LeBron’s fault and Dwyane Wade’s fault (that the Heat are losing) we are not going to say it is Spoelstra’s fault. I don’t know if they really need him (Pat Riley) to come in, but as players you need somebody to respect.  You need something to respect the guy. I don’t see that on the floor. I don’t see anyone playing for each other, just as individuals.”

T-Mobile Halftime Report

Johnson, McHale and Webber

Webber on Bulls guard Derrick Rose getting 16 points, 7 assists in the first half: “He is the real deal. How does this guy score? He comes off the pick and roll; he dribbles so well, he can get guys involved.”

***** ***** *****

NBA GameTime presented by Hyundai

Johnson, McHale and Webber

Webber on how everyone on the Los Angeles Lakers bench knows what their role is: “Matt Barnes is a defender. He knows that he is the replacement for (Ron) Artest. He knows his job is to come and give the energy that Artest does. If you look at (Steve) Blake, he knows he is supposed to lead. Shannon Brown knows that he is supposed to attack the rim. I really like how these guys are playing together. It seems like they are all on the same page.”

Lakers reserve guard Shannon Brown joins NBA GameTime via Arena Link following the game

Brown on taking pride in coming off the Lakers’ bench: “Last year we got a lot of grief about our bench and how we weren’t holding the starters down. This year the guys came in and we just clicked right away. We go out there and take pride in it every night and play our hearts out.”

Brown on the steps he took to prepare for this level in his basketball career: “I wasn’t being myself. I was listening to everybody and trying to take their advice. I was trying to do things to please others instead of doing what I did to get better from each level of basketball, from grammar school to this level of basketball. I sat back and evaluated myself, my game, and the years that I have been in the league and decided to let everything go and just go out there and be who I am, just be Shannon Brown and go out there and play basketball.”

Brown on playing against Bulls’ point guard Derrick Rose: “(Rose is) so quick. One time he came with an in and out, left. We tried to push him down. He went in and out, left. He showed the ball and took it away. He doubled pumped and reversed it on the other end. Wow. We were thinking we need to send him somewhere else so we can make a play. He’s a great player. I’ve been a fan of his since he was in Simeon (high school in Chicago). He’s just an awesome player. He is so humble.”

Brown on Lakers’ theme for this season: “We focus on defense and getting better every day. The new guys that came in, the chemistry and camaraderie has been amazing. We know there are going to be ups and downs. We have to continue to stay together, at every practice get better and at every game get better.”
