October 26, 2009 By admin

KOPITAR, CAMMALLERI AND MARLEAU NAMED NHL ‘THREE STARS’ OF THE WEEK

NEW YORK (October 26, 2009) — Los Angeles Kings center Anze Kopitar,  Montreal Canadiens left wing Mike Cammalleri and San Jose Sharks center Patrick Marleau have been named the NHL ‘Three Stars’ for the week ending Oct. 25.

FIRST STAR — ANZE KOPITAR, C, LOS ANGELES KINGS

Kopitar led all scorers last week with nine points (six goals, three assists) as the Kings (8-4-0) posted four consecutive victories and climbed to first place in the Pacific Division. Kopitar tallied one goal in a 4-1 win over the Dallas Stars on Oct. 19, recorded his first career hat trick in a 5-4 overtime victory over Dallas Oct. 22, notched three assists in a 5-3 win against the Phoenix Coyotes Oct. 24 and scored two goals in a 6-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets Oct. 25. Kopitar, who in 2008-09 became the first Kings player since Luc Robitaille to tally at least 20 goals in each of his first three NHL seasons, is on track for career year. The 22-year-old Slovenia native leads the League in goals (10) and points (21) in 12 games.

SECOND STAR — MIKE CAMMALLERI, LW, MONTREAL CANADIENS

Cammalleri recorded six points (four goals, two assists) as the Canadiens (5-5-0) posted three consecutive victories. Cammalleri notched one assist in a 2-1 shootout win over the Atlanta Thrashers Oct. 20, recorded one goal in a 5-1 victory over the New York Islanders Oct. 22 and tallied a hat trick, including the overtime winner, plus an assist in a 4-3 win over the New York Rangers Oct. 24. Cammalleri leads the Canadiens in scoring with 11 points (five goals, six assists) in 10 games.

THIRD STAR — PATRICK MARLEAU, C, SAN JOSE SHARKS

Marleau tallied nine points (three goals, six assists) as the Sharks (7-4-1) finished their six-game East Coast road trip with a 3-1-0 record. Marleau posted three multi-point games, beginning with a goal and two assists in a 7-3 victory over the New York Rangers Oct. 19. He recorded one assist in a 5-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning Oct. 22 and tallied two goals, including the game-winner, and one assist in a 4-3 win over the Atlanta Thrashers Oct. 24. Marleau finished the week by extending his point streak to five games with a pair of assists in a 4-1 win over the Philadelphia Flyers Oct. 25. Marleau ranks second on the Sharks in scoring with 16 points (nine goals, seven assists) in 12 games.

CBS’s Brown Interviews NFL Commissioner Goodell

October 26, 2009 By admin

October 25, 2009

NEWS, NOTES & QUOTES FROM CBS SPORTS’ “THE NFL TODAY” WITH JAMES BROWN, DAN MARINO, SHANNON SHARPE,

BILL COWHER AND BOOMER ESIASON FOR WEEK 7 ON OCTOBER 25

►“SEC ON CBS’s” RATINGS ROLL WITH TIDE OVER TENNESSEE

CBS Sports’ coverage of the SEC ON CBS on Saturday, Oct. 24, which saw No. 1 Alabama defeating Tennessee, 12-10, earned an overnight household rating/share of 3.7/8, up 9% from last year’s 3.4/8 (No. 9 Georgia vs. No. 11 LSU).

►THE NFL TODAY’S JAMES BROWN INTERVIEW WITH NFL COMMISSIONER ROGER GOODELL VIA SATELLITE FROM LONDON

(On whether NFL is looking to add more games played in London and other cities)

Commissioner Goodell: The success we’ve had here in the U.K. over the last three years, if it continues to grow and we continue to build a bigger fan base, I think if we can continue that, we will look to add multiple games here.  Again, we’re just feeding the demand for our sport.  We would love to be able to see multiple games in this market.

(On whether NFL is looking specifically to put a franchise in London and how soon that might be)

Commissioner Goodell: I think we’re getting a little ahead of ourselves there, as far as getting a franchise here.  If we can continue to be successful with every step, if we do play multiple games here in London and they continue to build on the success we already have and our fan base grows, yes, it’s realistic to think that could happen someday.  But it’s down the road.

(On whether NFL will be back in Los Angeles; and whether it would be expansion or relocation)

Commissioner Goodell: Well, we do think that the developments in California were positive this week.  We’re grateful for the leadership there, particularly the Governor who did sign that bill.  But the reality is there’s a lot more work to be done.  It’s clear a stadium can get built now and get over the hurdles of environmental and   other challenges.  But we really have to figure out how to finance it.  And that’s the big challenge right now.  It would probably be an $800 million stadium.  That is going to be a real challenge for us. We’ll do one step at a time.  This is a positive development.  Hopefully someday we’ll be able to get back to Los Angeles because we know we have millions of fans in Southern California

(On potential League action against Oakland Head Coach Tom Cable despite being absolved of criminal charges)

Commissioner Goodell: We’ve been monitoring it the whole way.  This has been a criminal matter and the DA says they’re not going to pursue it any further at this stage.  We will look into that decision.  We will follow up on it.  And, if any action is necessary, we will take that.

(On what the NFL would do if a team experienced a major flu outbreak on game day)

Commissioner Goodell: We’ve been working on this for a long time with our competition committee and our medical consultants.  The reality of it is, we do everything we can for the health and safety of our players, but   there could be a competitive issue if something like the swine flu struck a team, and a number of players were   unavailable.  If more than six players were unavailable at any given time, we do have a procedure in place to allow them to sign players on short notice and bring them up with their practice squad or sign them from the street.  I think there are procedures in place should that happen.  Our most important issue is to make sure it doesn’t happen.  We’ve had some concerns with a couple of players’ health…but the reality is we’ve been able to contain it effectively with good medical help and that’s our hope.

►More with Commissioner Goodell during an in-game interview in London with Jim Nantz and Phil Simms

Nantz: Do you see having multiple games (in London) next year?

Commissioner Goodell: Yes I do.  It’s possible that we extend the series to two games for 2010.

►QUICK HITS

(On Washington Head Coach Jim Zorn)

BILL COWHER: The head coach is the face of the team.  He’s out there to give directions and answers.  Three weeks ago when Sherman Lewis was brought in, it began the undermining of Jim Zorn as head coach and offensive coordinator. When he was faced this past week with the stripping of the play calling, he had two choices: No. 1 you say no, and that could lead to his firing; or No. 2 you can say, if that’s part of the contract and they can do that, you accept it, you leave the room and endorse it.  He didn’t do either.  And in doing so, he lost his dignity and he lost his credibility.  To me, he lost his ability to be a head coach and lead this football team.  He’s nothing more than a figure head right now.

BOOMER ESIASON: If I were a player under those circumstances, he has just been marginalized by the ownership and general manager of that team.

SHANNON SHARPE: There’s enough blame to go around, but let’s start at the top with the owner Daniel Snyder because he thinks you can win the Super Bowl by spending the most money on the first day of free agency.  And that has never worked.  Then you have Vinny Cerrato.  He has a situation where he has a radio show.  I don’t think a Player Personnel or General Manager should talk about the inner workings of what’s happening in the organization.  Maybe Jim Zorn is in over his head, but when you hire the offensive coordinator before you hire the head coach, there’s the problem right there.  You don’t go to the grocery store, put the stuff in the basket and then start marking your list down.  You get the list first.  Then you go shopping.  They hired the offensive coordinator first, then hired the coach.  That’s wrong.

►“INSIDE THE NFL” WITH CHARLEY CASSERLY

(On Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford needing surgery)

CASSERLY: In my opinion, get the surgery now.  It’s a five-month rehab that will put you healthy one month before the draft; no complications in the surgery.  I think he’ll still be a high number one pick in next year’s draft.

NFL ON CBS & SEC ON CBS Ratings Flourishing

October 23, 2009 By admin

CBS SPORTS’ NFL AND COLLEGE FOOTBALL RATINGS FLOURISHING

CBS Sports coverage of THE NFL ON CBS through the first six weeks of the season is averaging a national rating/share of 10.2/21, up 5% from last year’s 9.7/21.

Season-to-date the NFL on CBS is averaging 16.6 million viewers, an increase of 8% over 15.3 million viewers in 2008 through six weeks. This 16.6 million viewer average is the highest number for the NFL on CBS six weeks into the season since the NFL returned to CBS in 1998 and is the highest average for the NFL ON CBS six weeks into the season since 18.1 million viewers in 1990 when CBS broadcast the NFL’s NFC game package.

CBS Sports’ coverage of the SEC ON CBS after six telecasts has earned a season-to-date national household rating/share of 3.9/9, up 44% from last year’s 2.7/6 (7 telecasts).  This year’s 3.9/9 is CBS Sports’ highest rating at this point in the college football season since college football returned to the network in 1996.  The previous high was a 3.8/10 in 1999.

CBS Sports’ coverage of the SEC ON CBS is currently only one-tenth of a household rating point behind ABC’s season-to-date ratings for college football in 2009 (3.9/9 vs. 4.0/9). This is the closest margin CBS Sports has been to ABC since college football returned to CBS Sports in 1996.   CBS Sports’ prior closest margin was three-tenths of a rating point behind ABC in 2007 (3.3/7 vs. 3.6/8).

ESPN’s Weekend and Monday NFL Studio Features

October 22, 2009 By admin

ESPN’s Weekend and Monday NFL Studio Features

ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown Presented by IBM will preview the day’s matchups Sunday at 11 a.m. ET with Chris Berman and analysts Cris Carter, Mike Ditka, Tom Jackson and Keyshawn Johnson.  ESPN senior analyst Chris Mortensen and NFL insider Adam Schefter will provide headlines and league news.

The two-hour program will include reports from Rachel Nichols covering the Minnesota Vikings at Pittsburgh Steelers, Ed Werder at the Falcons – Cowboys game, and Bob Holtzman in Cincinnati for the Chicago Bears at Cincinnati Bengals.  Other highlights:

Brett Favre, Ben Roethlisberger and the Pump Fake: The common trait between Brett Favre and Ben Roethlisberger is the pump fake, a deceptive quarterbacking art form that fools defenders into wrong assumptions about where the football might be headed.  Jackson turns to defenders who have faced both quarterbacks to explain their pump and fakes.

Drew Brees and Chris Paul – New Orleans “Point Guards”: Experts contend a point guard in basketball is like a quarterback in football and vice versa, and in the NFL and NBA, New Orleans is home to two of the best players in these marquee roles for their respective sport – Drew Brees (NFL) and Chris Paul (NBA).  The two describe the similarities in their jobs. Nichols reports.

Vikings vs. Steelers – A Flashback to the Tug of War: Thirty-four years ago, the Minnesota Vikings lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl IX. Two weeks later in Hawaii, the teams met in a made-for-television show called Superteams – culminating in an epic 16-minute tug-of-war that those involved called one of their most grueling athletic tests.  The Vikings won.  Greg Garber caught up with seven of the living nine players who competed that day, including Hall of Famers Franco Harris, Lynn Swann and Carl Eller.

Mayne Event – Peyton Manning’s Secret Language: In this week’s “Mayne Event,” Kenny Mayne travels to Indianapolis where he interviews Peyton Manning and his offensive linemen about the quarterback’s unique form of pre-snap communication on the line of scrimmage.

EA Sports Virtual Playbook – Undefeated Idol: With four undefeated teams (Colts, Broncos, Vikings and Saints), Countdown analysts, using the EA Sports Virtual Playbook, will argue which teams have the best chance of making it to Super Bowl XLIV in Miami.

Ditka’s Doghouse: In his self-titled segment, the erstwhile mercurial NFL head coach Mike Ditka sends an NFL player to “Ditka’s Doghouse,” much like he did to erring players during his coaching career.

Patriots in England: As the New England Patriots are in London to play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Countdown looks into what awaits the Patriots as they head back “over the pond.”

Mark Sanchez – Film Room: Trent Dilfer goes in the film room to show how Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez, after a 3-0 start, has spent the past three weeks playing like a rookie having thrown eight interceptions in a three-game losing streak.

Start ‘Em or Sit ‘Em with Matthew Berry and Merril Hoge: ESPN’s fantasy football guru Matthew Berry and NFL analyst Merril Hoge debate which players to start or sit this weekend.

Berman, Carter, Ditka, Jackson and Johnson will pick the biggest games of the day and tell fans which players will make the biggest impact in NFL’s Week 7 action.  The list of game picks will be posted on www.espn.com/sundaycountdown after the show.

MONDAY NIGHT COUNTDOWN, 7 P.M. ON ESPN

Monday Night Countdown Served by Applebee’s with Berman, Carter, Ditka, Jackson, Johnson, Mortensen and Schefter (in Bristol) and Stuart Scott, Matt Millen and Steve Young (at the MNF game in Washington, DC) will review Sunday’s games and preview Monday Night Football.  The 90-minute, pre-game show will lead into the kickoff of the Philadelphia Eagles at Washington Redskins (8:30 p.m.) game, featuring Mike Tirico, Jon Gruden and Ron Jaworski

Reporters Suzy Kolber (Eagles) and Michele Tafoya (Redskins) will cover the teams.  Other highlights:

“Unmasked” – DeSean Jackson: In his second season, DeSean Jackson has turned into the Eagles big play wide receiver.  Leading up to the Eagles’ divisional rivalry game with the Redskins, Jackson gets “Unmasked.”

“Soundtracks” – The Best of Eagles-Redskins Rivalry: n this week’s “Soundtracks,” Countdown relives some of the best moments in this NFC East rivalry.

WEEKLY MONDAY NIGHT COUNTDOWN SEGMENTS

TEAMS AT 20 – Every 20 minutes reporters Tafoya and Kolber will update news from the teams in their preparations for the game, beginning with NFL Live at 3:30 p.m.

FIELD PASS – Countdown offers an all-access look at pre-game preparations as the players get ready for kickoff.  Analysts will also breakdown the important storylines and key players before the game.

C’MON MAN – Countdown personalities share their head-scratching plays from Week 7.

In addition, Monday Night Football’s Tirico, Jaworski and Gruden will preview the night’s match-up, with Mortensen and Schefter covering breaking news from around the league, and the Countdown analysts offering their “Lead Pipe Lock” predictions for the game.

NFL MATCHUP, SUNDAY 3 A.M. AND 7:30 A.M. ON ESPN

NFL Matchup with host Sal Paolantonio and analysts Merril Hoge and Ron Jaworski will preview the weekend’s games by bringing viewers inside the film room for the Xs and Os analysis of the matchups.  The 30-minute program – taped each week at NFL Films in Mt. Laurel, New Jersey – highlights team strategy and game planning.  This week’s features:

Vikings @ Steelers: Steelers Offense –  Jaworski spotlights how Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is seeing the field with clarity and consistently making correct decisions from the pocket.

Vikings @ Steelers: Vikings Offense – Hoge pulls out the ‘Coaches Clicker’ and examines how the Vikings defense has been successful on the most important downs and distance.

Saints @ Dolphins – Jaworski shows how New Orleans creates favorable matchups with its formations and player alignments.

Cardinals @ Giants – Hoge highlights how quarterback Kurt Warner’s ability to throw downfield with uncanny anticipation can negate the Giants’ pass rush this Sunday.

Eagles @ Redskins – Jaworski illustrates how the Raiders took advantage of Philadelphia’s tendencies on offense, breaking down their pass protection for quarterback Donovan McNabb.

Falcons @ Cowboys – Hoge shows how the Cowboys are able to manipulate opposing defenses in the running game with their tight ends.

Bears @ Bengals – Hoge unveils how the combination of play-action passes and quarterback Jay Cutler’s ability to throw with pressure in his face can offset the Bears’ protection problems.

49ers @ Texans – Jaworski explains how Houston Texans’ tight end Owen Daniels creates the biggest problem for opposing defenses.

FIGHT CAMP 360: Fedor vs. Rogers ANNOUNCED!

SHOWTIME SPORTS® SHINES SPOTLIGHT ON

MIXED MARTIAL ARTS WITH NEW INSTALLMENT:

FIGHT CAMP 360°: Fedor vs. Rogers

Premieres Tuesday, Nov. 3, 9:30 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME®;

For The First Time Ever, Film Crew Captures The Athlete, The Family Man and The Mystique of MMA’s # 1 Fighter, Fedor, in Russian Training Camp

NEW YORK (Oct. 22, 2009)—In the wake of the critically acclaimed debut of FIGHT CAMP 360°: Inside The Super Six World Boxing Classic, SHOWTIME Sports® turns the spotlight to mixed martial arts with FIGHT CAMP 360°: Fedor vs. Rogers.

FIGHT CAMP 360°: Fedor vs. Rogers will feature unrestricted access to one of the most enigmatic professional athletes of today, Fedor Emelianenko and his next opponent, the undefeated Brett Rogers, as they prepare to headline “STRIKEFORCE/M-1 Global Saturday Night Fights” to be broadcast LIVE on Saturday, Nov. 7 (9:00 PM, ET/delayed PT) on the CBS Television Network.

FIGHT CAMP 360°: Fedor vs. Rogers will premiere on SHOWTIME® on Tuesday, Nov. 3 at 9:30 p.m. ET/PT. The CBS Television Network will also make the show available to its 203 affiliated stations for broadcast in advance of the fight.

image007From director Ron Yassen, who is embedded in Fedor’s training camp in Stary Oskol, Russia: “Fedor is beyond captivating as a fighter, and more so, as a man.  It’s a pure joy to film him so intimately as he strives for perfection in life and sport with grace and charm.  While training for this most important match, he kindly opened up his life to us in and out of the ring, without the ego that often comes with being the very best at one’s craft.”

Produced in conjunction with Roadside Entertainment, FIGHT CAMP 360°: Fedor vs. Rogers will showcase both fighters as they prepare for this historic fight.  Nov. 7 marks the first time Fedor, widely considered the sport’s No. 1 fighter, will appear in front of a national broadcast television audience.  Despite his iconic status within the sport, Fedor (30-1) remains shrouded in mystery, living and training in seclusion in a remote mining village in Russia far away from the spotlight afforded the sports’ very best.

Rogers lives and trains in Minneapolis, and enters the fight with an impressive 10-0 record after most recently dismantling former heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski. Rogers, a quiet, soft-spoken giant outside the cage, who earlier this year quite his job as a tire technician at Sam’s Club, has the opportunity of a lifetime to dethrone the sport’s greatest in front of a national television audience.

“The response to our inaugural episode of Fight Camp 360°: Inside The Super Six World Boxing Classic chronicling the boxing tournament has been overwhelming,” said SHOWTIME Sports General Manager Ken Hershman, who commissioned the project. “Because of the subjects involved—the mysterious world champion set to fight a man living the American dream—we had to turn our lens in this direction. Special thanks to M-1 Global and STRIKEFORCE for affording us a level of access to both men that has been unparalleled in their respective careers.”

Scott Coker, president of STRIKEFORCE, added, ”This is a one of a kind opportunity for fans to go behind the scenes and take a close look at the extraordinary, number one fighter in the world – Fedor – and his opponent who has become a symbol of The American Dream.”

Guillen Joins FOX Sports for 2009 World Series

October 22, 2009 By admin

CHICAGO WHITE SOX MANAGER OZZIE GUILLEN JOINS FOX SPORTS FOR 2009 WORLD SERIES

Charismatic & Entertaining 2005 World Champion Manager Serves

As Pre- & Postgame Analyst

Also Contributes Exclusive Analysis to FOXSports.com & FOX Sports En Español World Series Telecasts

New York & Los Angeles – Ozzie Guillen has been called many things.  Honest, outspoken, intense, insightful, entertaining, amusing, controversial, passionate and a World Champion, but never boring.  Now you can add major network television analyst to that list as the fiery Chicago White Sox manager joins FOX Sports as a pregame and postgame analyst for the network’s coverage of the 2009 Fall Classic.  The announcement was made today by Ed Goren, President and Executive Producer of FOX Sports.

In addition to his role on FOX Sports, Guillen will also provide exclusive analysis and content for FOXSports.com and appear on FOX Sports En Español World Series coverage.

The straight-shooting Guillen, who guided the White Sox to a 2005 World Championship, joins host Chris Rose and fellow analysts Mark Grace and Eric Karros live on-site for every World Series broadcast on FOX.   FOX Sports coverage of Game 1 is set for Wednesday, Oct. 25 at this year’s new, earlier 7:30 PM ET start time.

“In addition to being one of game’s best managers, Ozzie Guillen has one of the most electric and charismatic personalities in baseball, which is exactly why we are thrilled to add him to our World Series broadcasts,” said Goren.  “You never know what you are going to hear from Ozzie and given his tremendous love and enthusiasm for this game, I think viewers are going to really enjoy his candid opinions each and every night.  Ozzie Guillen live should be great television.”

Guillen’s engaging personality, honesty and candor have made him a popular media figure both in Chicago and nationally.  His previous MLB television experience was as an analyst for the Hispanic television broadcast of the 1992 MLB All-Star Game in San Diego.

“I am looking forward to joining the FOX team for the World Series,” Guillen said.  “Although I would be even happier to be in the dugout managing these games, nothing beats a World Series atmosphere, and I’m excited to provide FOX viewers with a Major League manager’s perspective of the games.”

Following his 16-year playing career that stretched from 1985 through 2000, Guillen served as a coach for the Montreal Expos (2001-2002) and third-base coach for the Florida Marlins in 2003, where he won his first World Series ring.  He was named the 37th manager in Chicago White Sox history on November 3, 2003 and in 2005, guided the team to their first American League Pennant since 1959 and their first World Series title in 88 years with a four-game sweep of the Houston Astros.  He is the first Latin-born manager in the history of the game to have won a World Series.  Guillen is also the only manager in White Sox history to guide the team to more than one division/league title and was named the 2005 American League Manager of the Year by the Baseball Writers Association of America.  Guillen managed the 2006 AL All-Star team to a 3-2 victory and has an overall career managerial record of 512-461.

Guillen is a member of the select group of quick-handed shortstops that emerged from Venezuela, a group that includes Chico Carrasquel, Luis Aparicio, Dave Concepcion and Omar Vizquel.  Guillen made his Major League debut with the White Sox on April 9, 1985 and played for the team through the 1997 season.  He also played for the Baltimore Orioles (1998), Atlanta Braves (1998-1999), and finished his career with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 2000.   Guillen was named American League Rookie of the Year in 1985, was a three-time All-Star (1988, 1990 & 1991) and won the Gold Glove Award in 1990.  He played in one postseason in 1993 against the Toronto Blue Jays in the ALCS.  He batted .264 with 28 home runs and 619 RBI’s during his 16-year playing career.

Born January 20, 1964 in Ocumare Del Tuy, Venezuela where he makes his permanent residence, Guillen is married to Ibis Cardenas.  The couple has three children:  Oswaldo Jr., Oney (drafted by the White Sox as an infielder in 2007) and Ozney.  Son Ozzie Jr. serves as the lead broadcaster on White Sox Spanish-language radio broadcasts.
