NFL AND DIRECTV EXTEND NFL SUNDAY TICKET AGREEMENT THROUGH 2014 SEASON

NFL AND DIRECTV EXTEND

NFL SUNDAY TICKET AGREEMENT

THROUGH 2014 SEASON

New “Red Zone Channel” to Be Widely Offered

on Multiple Platforms

New NFL Sunday Ticket Package Available

Via Broadband

NFL Network Carriage Agreement Extended

The National Football League announced today an agreement to extend DIRECTV’s rights to carry NFL Sunday Ticket. DIRECTV will continue to have exclusive television rights to air the package of Sunday afternoon games through the 2014 NFL season.

The agreement also significantly broadens the reach of NFL Sunday Ticket by enabling NFL fans that cannot receive DIRECTV satellite service to get NFL Sunday Ticket via broadband. This service will begin no later than 2012.

In addition, the NFL will offer fans (also no later than 2012) a new “Red Zone Channel” that shows crucial live action cut-ins of all Sunday afternoon games starting at 1 p.m. ET and continuing through the conclusion of the 4 p.m. ET games. The “Red Zone Channel” will be available to cable, telco and satellite systems, wireless devices, and the Internet.

“We are pleased to extend a partnership with DIRECTV that has complemented and supported our broadcast television packages for 15 years,” said NFL Commissioner ROGER GOODELL. “We are looking forward to having the Red Zone channel on cable and other media platforms as well as showing NFL Sunday Ticket via broadband to the homes that cannot get satellite. This new content enhances our tradition of being the most pro-consumer, widely available sport on television.”

“The NFL SUNDAY TICKET™ service has been a part of DIRECTV since our first year of operation and is one of the defining characteristics of our best-in- class positioning,” said Chase Carey, president and CEO of DIRECTV Group. “This latest extension allows us to retain and broaden our most popular sports subscription service. Through our wireless offering to NFL SUNDAY TICKET™ customers and the new broadband service to non-customers, we’re now able to expand the reach to even more NFL fans everywhere.”

Among the new features for fans are:

  • Red Zone Channel: subscribers who do not have DIRECTV will have access to the “Red Zone” channel through local cable systems or telco, satellite systems and Internet providers. This special channel has been part of NFL Sunday Ticket on DIRECTV the past four seasons and will continue for those subscribers. It provides live look-ins and real-time highlights from every Sunday afternoon game starting at 1 P.M. (ET) through the late afternoon games. The channel switches from game to game and airs live action when a team is in the Red Zone (inside the 20-yard line) and poised to score. A host also provides real-time scoring and fantasy updates.

  • NFL Sunday Ticket on Broadband: Fans who live in areas where DIRECTV’s service is not available, such as apartment buildings or in residences with poor sightlines to a satellite signal, will be able to purchase a new NFL Sunday Ticket broadband package.

DIRECTV customers who purchase NFL SUNDAY TICKET™ and the SuperFan™ package receive all Sunday afternoon games in HD; a Game Mix channel with up to eight games on one screen; the Red Zone Channel; the SUPERCAST™ service that streams every live NFL SUNDAY TICKET™ broadcast to laptop computers; and the NFL SUNDAY TICKET™ Mobile service that delivers up-to-the-minute highlights, and soon full-length games, to cell phones, pda’s and other wireless devices.

DIRECTV also has extended its carriage agreement with NFL Network which airs seven days a week, 24 hours a day on a year-round basis and is the only network fully dedicated to the NFL and the sport of football. NFL Network will continue to be offered in DIRECTV’s CHOICE package.

Monday Night Football Season-Opening Doubleheader – Bills-Patriots, Chargers-Raiders on Sept. 14

March 23, 2009 By admin

ESPN’s Monday Night Football Season-Opening Doubleheader – Bills-Patriots and Chargers-Raiders on Sept. 14

Tom Brady’s Return, Terrell Owens’ Bills Debut to Highlight Kickoff of MNF’s 40th Season

Monday Night Football will kick off its 40th season with two-time Super Bowl MVP Tom Brady expected to make his highly-anticipated return to the field when the New England Patriots host wide receiver Terrell Owens and the Buffalo Bills in the first game of a nationally televised ESPN doubleheader on Monday, September 14. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET, followed by the San Diego Chargers at Oakland Raiders in a matchup of AFC West rivals at 10:15 p.m.

The Patriots finished with an 11-5 record in 2008 despite losing Brady to a season-ending knee injury in their opening game. In 2007, Brady was named the NFL MVP after leading the Patriots to a perfect 16-0 regular season record and a Super Bowl appearance. The AFC East rival Bills will make their season debut with a revamped offense featuring Owens, the dynamic All Pro wide receiver who signed as a free agent earlier this month. ESPN’s MNF commentator team of Mike Tirico (play-by-play) and analysts Ron Jaworski and Tony Kornheiser will call the game.

Quarterback Phillip Rivers and running back LaDainian Tomlinson will lead the Chargers against the Raiders in Oakland in the second game. San Diego won the AFC West a year ago and advanced to the divisional round of the NFL Playoffs. The Chargers and Raiders also played in ESPN’s inaugural season-opening MNF doubleheader in 2006. The ESPN commentators who will call the game will be announced later this offseason.

The MNF doubleheader will be part of the NFL’s celebration of the 50th anniversary season of the AFL. All four teams in the opening weekend ESPN games originally began playing in the inaugural 1960 American Football League season.

ESPN Deportes, ESPN’s 24-hour Spanish-language domestic sports network, will continue to offer a Spanish-language production of MNF games during the 2009 NFL season. Remaining games on ESPN’s 17-game Monday Night Football regular-season schedule are expected to be announced in April. All MNF game telecasts will start at 8:30 p.m.

ESPN’S MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL
ESPN’s Monday Night Football is the most-watched series in cable television history and the only NFL series nominated for a Sports Emmy in the Outstanding Live Sports Series category in both 2006 and 2007. In three seasons on ESPN, Monday Night Football has registered seven of the top 10 all-time biggest household audiences in cable history, led by the Philadelphia Eagles-Dallas Cowboys telecast (9/15/08), which attracted cable’s largest household audience ever (an average of 12,953,000 million homes and 18,608,000 P2+). For the 2008 season, ESPN’s MNF delivered the three biggest household audiences — and 13 of the top 15 — for cable television in 2008, averaging an 8.9 rating and 8,679,000 homes (11,962,000 P2+). The accompanying “Monday Night Surround” content on ESPN.com sparked an increase of Monday traffic to the site of 51% over the previous season with an average 68.1 million page views per week.

NFL ANNOUNCES 2009 PRIMETIME KICKOFF WEEKEND & THANKSGIVING DAY GAMES

March 23, 2009 By admin

NFL ANNOUNCES PRIMETIME KICKOFF WEEKEND &

THANKSGIVING DAY GAMES

The NFL announced today its 2009 Kickoff Weekend primetime television schedule – including a Monday night “AFL 50th” doubleheader – and the Thanksgiving Day national TV tripleheader.

In a tradition that began in 2004, the Super Bowl champion annually hosts the NFL Thursday night season kickoff the following year. This September 10 at 8:30 PM ET on NBC, the Super Bowl XLIII champion Pittsburgh Steelers will host the AFC South champion Tennessee Titans, who had an NFL-best 13-3 record last season.

The Sunday night primetime game (8:30 PM ET) on NBC will feature a division matchup as the Green Bay Packers host the Chicago Bears. Green Bay and Chicago have won seven of the past eight NFC North titles.

On Monday night, September 14, ESPN will host a Monday Night Football doubleheader that will be part of the NFL’s celebration of the 50th anniversary season of the American Football League. The four clubs competing that night began playing in the inaugural 1960 AFL season. The first game (7:00 PM ET) will send the Buffalo Bills to Foxboro to visit the New England Patriots, the decade’s winningest team (102-42 since 2000). The MNF nightcap (10:15 PM ET) will be an AFC West battle as the Oakland Raiders host the three-time defending division champ San Diego Chargers.

Continuing an innovation introduced in 2006, the NFL will serve up three nationally-televised games on Thanksgiving Day.

The early game (FOX, 12:30 PM ET) will be an NFC North meeting of the Green Bay Packers at the Detroit Lions. The second game (CBS, 4:15 PM ET) features the Oakland Raiders visiting the Dallas Cowboys in the Raiders’ first Thanksgiving game since 1970.

The Thanksgiving primetime game will be at 8:20 PM ET on NFL Network with the NFC East champion New York Giants visiting the Denver Broncos, marking the first Thanksgiving contest in Denver since 1963.

The announcement of the Kickoff Weekend and Thanksgiving games was made Monday by NFL Commissioner ROGER GOODELL at the NFL Annual Meeting in Dana Point, California.

The rest of the 2009 regular-season schedule will be completed and announced in April.

Excerpts from Josh McDaniels’ Exclusive Interview with NFL Network

March 23, 2009 By admin

“He’s our quarterback, we want him to be our quarterback, we made that very clear to him and we hope he feels the same way.” – Broncos Head Coach Josh McDaniels

Below are quotes from NFL Network’s Scott Hanson’s exclusive 1-on-1 with Broncos Head Coach Josh McDaniels:

Scott Hanson: What’s the latest on the Jay Cutler situation?

Josh McDaniels: We’re working through that. Jay and I will have an opportunity to talk more as we go here. I know it’s been a very public issue and this is something that I think happens more than people realize. We have a relationship, nobody knows where it stands right now, but it’s going to get better. It will continue to get better, I believe that. I think it’s something that both parties have to work toward a solid resolution. We have a good nucleus of players there that are looking forward to seeing him back at the facility and working with him. It will get to that point at some point in the near future.

Hanson: Do you see him as the quarterback of the Denver Broncos?

McDaniels: Yes. He’s our quarterback.

Hanson: Present-tense…

McDaniels: He’s our quarterback. Period.

Hanson: Future-tense? He will be your quarterback?

McDaniels: He’s our quarterback. We can’t predict the future. He’s our quarterback, we want him to be our quarterback, we made that very clear to him and we hope he feels the same way.

Hanson: (Cutler) has asked for a trade and he says he wants to leave. He’s still under contract with Denver, so is the door open in your mind for him to still be the (Broncos’) quarterback?

McDaniels: Sure. Absolutely. He’s under contract as you mentioned and we’ve made it clear that we want him to be back here (in Denver) and lead our football team.

Hanson: But your job is to make the football team as good as it can be, and that sometimes includes changing personnel. Is that still on the table? A trade?

McDaniels: Every decision we make is based on trying to do what’s best for the football team in order for us to win and improve. That’s always going to be the way that this job is. This was just a very highly-publicized situation that was brought to the forefront. (Cutler) is obviously one of our better players, our best players. He’s a good leader and we’re looking forward to having him back here with us.

Hanson: You really feel that the relationship is not irreparable?

McDaniels: I absolutely feel that it is not irreparable.

Hanson: Is it a lack of communication? Have you been able to put your finger on what’s gone wrong so far?

McDaniels: It’s just a situation that came up. I think there are some things out there that are not necessarily true, and there are some other things that are definitely true. We have to work through those things are make sure that the lines of communication stay open. I think that’s the biggest thing, in terms of getting over any kind of an issue that a player may have with an organization or a coach. It’s the same thing that (the organization) has to do when there is an issue with a player. We want to come directly to (the player) and work through it and communicate to find a common ground that we can start going forward and working toward a good resolution.

Hanson: What’s not true? You stated that there were some things (in the situation with Cutler) that were not true. We can clear that up right now.

McDaniels: There are just things that I think have been out there that make for good stories. Was there something that occurred right at the beginning of free agency? Sure, there was. There were conversations and that’s really where it kind of ends. There wasn’t anything that came across (Pat) Bowlen’s desk, there wasn’t anything that we were trying to push hard to get through. It never even got to (Bowlen). Conversations were had and we’ve never denied that, but at the same time it’s our job to look at every opportunity that we can to see if it’s something that could improve our football team and that’s what we were doing.

Hanson: You have talked to (Cutler) since then. There are reports of a conference call and a face-to-face meeting. Can you confirm that?

McDaniels: Yes, we have.

Hanson: Do you feel that Cutler understands where you and the franchise are coming from right now?

McDaniels: I hope so. We haven’t held anything back. I think the big thing is that we need to continue to communicate and I’d love to have the opportunity to continue to meet with Cutler face-to-face. I think that’s the best type of communication at this point to try to work toward a resolution.

For more on the conversation with McDaniels and today’s other news from the NFL Annual Meeting, tune into NFL Total Access tonight at 7:00 PM ET

Partnership to Develop Long- and Short-Form Programming for all Platforms

My Dad’s a Pro is First Series in Development

Cartoon Network today announced a multifaceted partnership with the NBA to develop long- and short-form basketball-themed content across a wide variety of platforms, including online, mobile, VOD and on-air. Through this partnership and the network’s alignment with Turner Sports, this announcement continues a long-standing relationship the NBA has had with Turner Broadcasting for over 25 years.

“We’re thrilled to be teaming up with one of the world’s most preeminent sports brands,” said Stuart Snyder, president and COO of Turner Animation, Young Adults & Kids Media. “This partnership with the NBA is part of the ongoing sports strategy at Cartoon Network and is a perfect extension of our brand that will allow us to continue to create even more relevant and compelling content that speaks directly to our audience.”

“Cartoon Network represents the best in entertainment for kids and families, and new shows like My Dad’s a Pro demonstrate the kind of innovative programming we hope to produce in this new partnership,” said NBA Deputy Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer Adam Silver.

“This collaboration is a further extension of the strong business relationship and long-term partnership we have developed with the NBA,” said David Levy, president of Turner Sports and Turner Broadcasting Sales, Inc. “The expansion of our partnership with the league speaks to the strength of our company. Whether it’s sports, kids’ entertainment or news programming, Turner delivers strong content on a multitude of platforms.”

To coincide with the NBA season tip-off in fall 2009, Cartoon Network is developing the short-form series, My Dad’s a Pro, the first of several programming initiatives to come out of the Cartoon Network/NBA partnership. The short-form series follows the children of NBA players, and explores the day to day thrills and challenges that go along with such an exciting lifestyle. The first of these episodes will premiere this fall. Also this fall, a sustained and robust basketball section will launch on CartoonNetwork.com. The customized branded environment will allow sports fans to share their passion for the game throughout the year with a mix of basketball-themed multimedia content.

Turner is in its 25th year as a media and broadcast partner with the NBA. TNT is the exclusive home of Thursday night NBA regular season doubleheaders. In addition, the network exclusively covers NBA All-Star and will air more than 40 playoff games this year, including exclusive coverage of the Eastern Conference Finals. In addition, Turner also manages the NBA Digital portfolio, which includes NBA TV and NBA.com.

ESPN’s Her Story Special: Celebrating Women in Sports

March 23, 2009 By admin

ESPN’s Her Story:  Celebrating Women in Sports
One-Hour Special March 27 Highlights
Today’s Young Female Athletes
ESPN‘s celebration of  Women’s History Month will culminate with a one-hour special, Her Story, hosted by Hannah Storm on Friday, March 27, at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN.  The special will highlight the accomplishments of young female athletes, their contributions to advancing the world of sports and the challenges facing them today.
“It was an honor to be involved in Her Story and to bring such inspirational and empowering stories to our audience,” said Storm. “It’s a really entertaining hour, featuring courageous and strong women from sports as diverse as surfing and roller derby. I really appreciate ESPN’s commitment to this project and to sports for women of all ages.”
Kristin Huckshorn, senior news editor and coordinating producer for the special, stated, “What’s unique about Her Story is its focus on young athletes and fresh stories our viewers may not have heard before.  While we respect the history of women athletes, we want to introduce athletes who are making history today, girls and women who are inspiring. We will give sports fans a glimpse of what they have to look forward to in the coming years.”
Her Story: The Special:
  • Teenage surfing phenom Bethany Hamilton, who returned to her sport with a vengeance after losing her left arm in a shark attack in 2003.  Despite the handicap, Hamilton has continued to rise in the rankings and become one of the world’s top surfers.
“For me, losing my arm was definitely worth it…… I can still surf, I get to inspire people who don’t have hope in life and nowadays a lot of people don’t have hope and I’m just really glad that I can do something bigger than just live my life for myself.” – Bethany Hamilton on her life after the shark attack
  • Twenty years ago, the Women’s Sports Foundation released a study that determined Hispanic girls had far lower participation in sports than other ethnicities. Few studies have updated that premise.
