MLB Network Adds Sean Casey To On-Air Talent Lineup

January 27, 2009 By admin

MLB NETWORK ADDS SEAN CASEY TO ON-AIR TALENT LINEUP

Three-Time All-Star Joins Versatile Roster as Studio Analyst

SECAUCUS, N.J. – MLB Network today announced that  Sean Casey, who announced his retirement from baseball today after a 12-year Major League Baseball career, has joined its roster of on-air talent.  Casey will join the cast of MLB Tonight, the live, nightly studio show that will be the signature program of the new network, and Hot Stove, a live, nightly off-season studio show, joining Barry Larkin, Al Leiter,  Joe Magrane, Dan Plesac, Harold Reynolds  and Mitch Williams as a studio analyst.  All of the on-air personalities will appear on both shows, as well as other programming across MLB Network, which launched on January 1,  2009, in approximately  50 million homes as the
largest network debut in cable history.

“Sean’s reputation within baseball as one of the most likable players in the game will help him transition easily into an on-air role,” said Tony  Petitti, President and Chief Executive Officer of MLB Network. “We have no doubt he’ll be able to jump right in and add to the great chemistry we’ve already developed with our studio team.”

“I really don’t feel like I’m retiring, I just feel like I’m moving on to the next stage of my career,” said Casey.  “Joining MLB Network is allowing me to do the two things that are most important to me, and that’s staying in baseball while getting to spend more time with my family.”

A three-time National League All-Star as a member of the Cincinnati Reds, Casey batted .302 with 130 home runs and 735 RBI in his career.  He played for the Cleveland Indians (1997), the Reds (1998-2005), the Pittsburgh Pirates (2006), the Detroit Tigers (2006-07) and the Boston Red Sox (2008) and finished among the N.L.’s top 10 hitters three times in his career while batting over .300 in six seasons.  In 2004, the University of Richmond graduate was the recipient of the Ernie Lombardi Award as the Reds’ Most Valuable Player.  After being dealt from the Pirates to the Tigers at the trade deadline in 2006, Casey helped lead the team to its first American League pennant in 22 years.  He was the Tigers’ top hitter in the postseason, going 16-for-37 overall – a batting average of .432 – and he starred
in the 2006 World Series, going 9-for-17 (.529) with a pair of home runs and five RBI in his first Fall Classic.

Known as “The Mayor” for being one of baseball’s most outgoing and likeable players, Casey was voted “the friendliest player in baseball” by fellow players in a Sports Illustrated poll in May 2007.

MLB Tonight will air live beginning at 6:00 p.m. ET until the final MLB game of the night ends between Monday and Saturday, and will be based out of MLB Network’s headquarters in Secaucus, New Jersey.  The program will feature live look-ins of games in progress, updates, highlights, reporting and analysis.  Hot Stove airs during the off-season at 7:00 p.m. ET Monday through Friday and features news, reports, and analysis of the moves clubs are making and planning in preparation for the upcoming season.
MLB Network launched in approximately 50 million cable and satellite homes on January 1, 2009 as the largest debut in cable television history, exceeding any other cable television launch by approximately 20 million.  With live games, original programming, highlights, classic games, and coverage of baseball events, MLB Network is the ultimate television destination for baseball fans.  For more information, go to mlbnetwork.com.

World Series Of Poker Europe Debuts Sunday, Feb. 1 On ESPN

WORLD SERIES OF POKER EUROPE DEBUTS SUNDAY, FEB. 1 ON ESPN

ESPN’s first ever coverage of the World Series of Poker Europe will begin on Sunday, Feb.  1 with the first four episodes beginning at 6 p.m. ET, followed by an encore presentation of episodes 1 and 2 on ESPN2 at 10 p.m., co-hosted by Lon McEachern and Norman Chad.

This world title event drew 362 renowned poker players to the Casino at the Empire in the heart of London. Widely considered to be one of the toughest starting fields ever assembled, pros from all over the world traveled to England for a chance to win poker’s most coveted piece of jewelry – a World Series of Poker bracelet and a first place check for more than $1.5 million.

In Episode 1 at 6 p.m., the fireworks begin early as American pros Phil Ivey and Mike Matusow are seated at the featured table. Others in action include former Main Event Champions Phil Hellmuth, Joe Hachem and Australian amateur Shane Warne, a retired cricket player who has been called the Michael Jordan of that sport.

In Episode 2 at 7 p.m., defending WSOP Europe Main Event Champion Annette Obrestad begins her quest to repeat. The Norwegian star became the youngest-ever to win the title a year ago, and now finds herself across the felt covered feature table from some of the best pros in the world, including Antonio Esfandiari and Phil Laak. Former Main Event champions Doyle Brunson and Chris Ferguson are also in action.

A stacked starting field at the WSOPE – Main Event played down to 179 players as a number of big names left London empty-handed including Phil Ivey, Patrik Antonius, and Howard Lederer, but many others remained..

Episode 3 at 8 p.m. begins with phenom Justin “Boosted J” Smith atop of the day two leader board, and challenged by Daniel “Kid Poker” Negreanu – one of poker’s most recognizable stars.  Negreanu heads a featured table with Phil Laak and newcomer Jamie Rosen, who at the time was 3rd in chips, just behind Negreanu.  At the end of the night, only 62 players will remain in the hunt for one of poker’s ultimate prizes.

Episode 4 at 9 p.m. will chronicle day 3 as the money bubble bursts.  Finish in 37th place and get nothing but a wish for safe travels home; finish 36th and collect nearly $50,000.  That bubble will weigh heavily on the players as another grueling day awaits.  Daniel Negreanu again gets the spotlight at the featured table.  This time, England’s David “Devilfish” Ulliott and Vicky Coren join him, along American high stakes pro Phil Laak.  Andy Bloch starts the day as chip leader as he tries to move closer to winning his first World Series of Poker bracelet.  Plenty of big names will try to stop him, including Mike “The Mouth” Matusow.  Also in action are emerging pros Chris Moorman and Chris Elliott, a Scotsman playing in his very first live tournament.

TWO-TIME SUPER BOWL CHAMPION RODNEY HARRISON JOINS NBC SPORTS’ SUPER BOWL XLIII COVERAGE

January 26, 2009 By admin

TAMPA, Fla. – January 26, 2009 – Rodney Harrison, who earned two Super Bowl rings with the New England Patriots, will join NBC’s Super Bowl XLIII Pregame Show it was announced today. In a 15-year-career, Harrison has made three Pro Bowl appearances and is the only player in NFL history with both 30 career sacks and 30 career interceptions.

NBC’s Super Bowl XLIII Pregame Show kicks off at Noon ET and will be led by its “Football Night in America” studio team of Bob Costas (host), Cris Collinsworth (co-host), Keith Olbermann (co-host), Dan Patrick (co-host), Jerome Bettis (analyst), Tiki Barber (analyst) and Peter King (reporter). Tony Dungy, Mike Holmgren and Matt Millen were also recently announced as contributors.

In addition to his two Super Bowl rings, Harrison was part of perhaps the most famous play in Super Bowl history, attempting to defend David Tyree’s miracle reception in last year’s Super Bowl XLII. During NBC’s pregame coverage, Harrison will discuss his role in Super Bowl lore as part of a feature on the Tyree catch.

Prior to joining the Patriots, Harrison played nine seasons with the San Diego Chargers. In his rookie season, the Chargers made the Super Bowl but lost to the San Francisco 49ers. The hard-hitting safety has seven interceptions in 13 career NFL playoff games. Harrison’s 2008 season was cut short due to injury.

Off the field, Harrison’s Patriots’ teammates honored him with the 2006 Ed Block Courage award for the player who best exemplifies the principles of courage and sportsmanship while also serving as a source of inspiration. In 2005, he participated in an officiating internship at NFL Europe’s training camp in Tampa, Fla., to learn more about the responsibilities of an NFL referee in anticipation of a potential post-football career. “SUNDAY NFL COUNTDOWN” NEWS AND NOTES – SUPER BOWL XLIII BYE WEEKEND

January 25, 2009 By admin

“SUNDAY NFL COUNTDOWN” NEWS AND NOTES – SUPER BOWL XLIII BYE WEEKEND

ESPN’s “Sunday NFL Countdown’s” Chris Berman, Mike Ditka, Keyshawn Johnson, Cris Carter, and Tom Jackson previewed Super Bowl XLIII, while Chris Mortensen provided the league headlines and news.  Some excerpts:

On Super Bowl week and who and what you are watching …
Jackson: “I’m watching preparation. I’m watching who’s there to play a football game, not to have fun. The fun is winning the game and then you enjoy that the rest of your life.”

Ditka: “The game is never as big as the hype. We play one every year. Remember who you are and where you are. This is the chance of a lifetime. Don’t think you’re going to get another opportunity. You may never get a second opportunity. Play your heart out this week.”

On Anquan Boldin’s sideline spat and if it will affect the Cardinals…
Johnson: “No. It’s not that big of a deal. If it was, you could see players grabbing him … I’ve been with Todd Haley and I’ve been around Todd Haley. He coached me with the Jets. He coached me in Dallas. In our meeting rooms was the worst. You would like to be a fly on that wall. I don’t how we could even be in the same room, I don’t know how we can get along so well. But that’s just a player and a coach out there competing. I work for TV, but I hate it because they try to turn it into more than it is. And, it’s not that big of a deal.”

Carter: For one, a lot of times you don’t know what the players are saying. But as players and coaches, we’re a fraternity. Whatever we say on Sunday’s or Monday’s during the game it doesn’t count. This is a competitive atmosphere. It’s a result’s oriented business …When you have an athlete like him and he can’t participate in the game, he’s going to let the coach know that. And he has a right to know that because of the sacrifice he’s made for his teammates.”

On Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin …
Carter: “One thing as players, we respect discipline and athletes really want discipline and order. But the thing we respect the most, for a lot of different reasons, we respect when people can make us better. When you can tell a football player something and make him a better player …When you make that player better, you’ve gained his respect. And that’s what we see, a guy who’s taken over – what I would say the greatest football franchise their ever is, the Pittsburgh Steelers.”

On Cardinals Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt the ex-Steeler…
Jackson: “I think their’s a saying, ‘know you’re personnel.’ Coach Whisenhunt is going to know the personnel. Specifically Big Ben, not an advantage because you can’t plan what Big Ben does.”

Johnson: I think he has the advantage over the defense. He has the opportunity to take advantage of Dick LeBeau’s defense having practiced against him. …Whisenhunt’s two years removed. Things change a lot..”

Mortensen’s Headlines:
On Tennessee Titans Kerry Collins …
Mortensen: “Kerry Collins is headed to the Pro Bowl to replace an injured Brett Favre and a rehabbing Phillip Rivers. He is thrilled. Even more thrilled that Titans coach Jeff Fisher has communicated clearly to him that the coach wants him back as the starter in 2009. But no renegotiations have commenced until Collins becomes a free agent in March. What does this mean for Vince Young? He’s promised a new attitude but the Titans also want to resign Chris Simms whom their high on. So, while Young is expected back in ‘09, his future figures to be an interesting topic.

On Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner …
Mortensen: “Coach Ken Whisenhunt, yes, he wants Kurt Warner back as the starter in ’09. Like Collins Warner is a pending free agent and while some in the Arizona organization wonder if Warner will retire if he pulls off a miracle run here with a Super Bowl championship. The chance to earn another two years of big paychecks to set him up even more nicely for a retirement makes a lot more sense.”

Payton on which Eastern All-Stars should not be starters:  “(The fans) got three out of five right.  Kevin Garnett shouldn’t be starting.  Some guys out there are playing better than him and (Allen Iverson), Devin Harris is playing better than (Iverson).  (Chris) Bosh would take (Garnett’s) spot, he’s playing way better than him. We are talking about a guy consistently performing every night, (he’s not performing) the way he was.”

Smith: “You are comparing (Kevin Garnett) to himself and not to other forwards.  As a team, if you take KG off the Boston Celtics and you put Chris Bosh on the Boston Celtics they are not 35-9.”

Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade joined the studio show via satellite to discuss his fifth straight NBA All-Star selection.

Wade on recovering from injuries and returning to his former self:   “Anyone who plays the game knows if you play injured, I had surgery on my left knee and my left shoulder, and you are one of those guys who guys look at the schedule every night and say, ‘I want to play my best game,’ it’s going to be very tough.  I had a bullseye on my back. I wasn’t whole and my team wasn’t as good, so last year was very tough physically and mentally. I got my trainer Tim Grover, along with the Miami Heat staff, and really got my body healthy and got ready for the Olympics and had the opportunity to go and play with some unbelievable guys and really start to enjoy and love the game again and came back and finished it off this season so far.”

Wade on the differences between the 2006 Championship team and his current team: “The difference between teams, if you look at a team like Boston, they have veteran guys and they know what they are doing. With our team in 2006 we had a lot of veteran guys and we didn’t have to go over too much, coach gave us a game plan and we executed.  With this young team it’s not that easy, we have to continue to tell guys what to do even within the game, and make sure guys are professional enough to bring it every night. I’m trying to lead as much as I can, of course my shot attempts are up but I have to for this young team to make sure that every night we are out there to compete. We’ve been doing a good job so far, and we’ve got 41 games more to go. Hopefully we can be better in these 41 and make a playoff push.”

Wade on what impact former Heat teammates Shaquille O’Neal and Gary Payton and former coach Pat Riley had on the team:  “From Shaq (O’Neal), he was one of those guys who went out there and he showed by example, his dominance and his attitude.  I thought GP was going to be a coach, he would pull you aside and even though he talked real fast you could understand what he was saying, he could pull you aside and let you know some things on the court.  Pat Riley is the ultimate motivator and ultimate leader, with this knowledge. Have all that and then you get the opportunity to go be on the Olympic team and go and be around Jason Kidd, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and others, I was excited to come back and help lead this team to do things this year that no one thought we could, and that’s to win.”

Wade on Payton’s assertion that Celtics forward Kevin Garnett should not be a starter on the NBA All-Star team: “I still talk to Gary (Payton) and I email him every time he says something crazy on TV and that was one of those crazy moments.  Chris Bosh is having an unbelievable individual season, but when you talk about KG and what he has to give up for those the other talent he has on the court, with Paul (Pierce) and with Ray (Allen) and other guys, he doesn’t have to score 20 and 12 like he used to.  You can still see his dominance on the court, we just played him last night, trust me we see his dominance on the court. He’s still the favorite to start in the All-Star Game the next couple of games. But Chris Bosh can easily be right there, he has the talent, and he’ll be there for the future as well.”

Payton on Raptors forward Chris Bosh playing better basketball than Celtics forward Kevin Garnett: “(Kevin Garnett) can play at a high caliber, but this is what the fans are saying, this is their pick because he’s their favorite player. Chris Bosh is not as famous as Kevin Garnett right now, but I think Bosh is playing better basketball.  We didn’t say he was a better player, we said who was playing consistent for the first part of the season.”

Smith on which player was left off the Western All-Star starters:  “(Nuggets forward) Carmelo Anthony should be a starter. Being hurt he probably shouldn’t even be on the team now, but in terms of popularity and what he had done while he was playing, I thought Carmelo did a great job. I don’t think Amar’e Stoudemire should be starting.”

Payton on which player he feels should not have made the Western All-Star starters:  “Tim Duncan shouldn’t be there.  You guys are going by what the team is doing and by fans.”

Smith:  “You don’t any credence for a guy on a winning team?”

Payton: “Not really, when you say All-Star.  When you stay All-Star what do you mean?”

Smith:  “An All-Star is a player on his team, that elevates his play and others play and makes the team in contention to be a playoff team.”

Houston Rockets center Yao Ming joined the studio show via satellite to discuss being an NBA All-Star starter.

Ming on being selected as a starter in the 2009 NBA All-Star Game:  “This All-Star being in Phoenix reminds me of 2004 and the L.A. All-Star because I also had Shaq (O’Neal) stand behind me.  It makes me feel a little nervous when you have the best center in the history as a back up for you, you don’t feel that comfortable.”

Ming on the Rockets play so far this season: “This record is a little behind what we thought, you have to make adjustments.  During last summer we got Ron Artest and everybody thought we should play better than now, but the injuries really hurt our team.  Actually, I feel we are pretty good, still 11 games above 500.  We still have a hard situation, we still have Tracy (McGrady) and Ron (Artest) with injuries, so we are still looking for a championship but we have put work in everyday.”

Webber on former Heat center Alonzo Mourning announcing his retirement: “We talk about All-Stars, but there will very few defensive players like (Alonzo Mourning).  This is one of the few people that when I went to the hole, I really knew that I had to try to dunk because people make posters dunking on him. It was a pleasure to dunk on him because he was blocking 90% of them, a real defender.”

Payton on the retirement of Alonzo Mourning:  “I played with (Alonzo Mourning), been around him a lot, went to the Olympics with him. Zo is a fierce, fierce competitor.  I liked the way he did it, he got hurt and he knew it was time, he was dealing with his kidney stuff and he would rather have his health than go on. He left in a good way, I’m very happy for you Alonzo.”

Smith on the impact Alonzo Mourning had off the court:  “(Alonzo Mourning) is going to be remembered far more for what he does off the court in Miami and his philanthropy throughout the area.  He is going to be remembered way more for that, he put more effort in that then he actually did as a player and he’s a better person for sure.”

Webber on the philosophy of selecting All-Stars because they play for good teams:  “If I’m on a 5-35 team, I work just as hard. I’ve been that guy on a bad team, I actually had to work harder, because when I pass the ball he doesn’t make the shot. You are really discrediting guys who are going to work every night.”

TNT’s Craig Sager interviewed Magic center Dwight Howard who was the leading vote-getter amongst the All-Star field and was the first player in balloting history to break 3 million-votes.

Howard on his reaction to getting the most votes and being selected as an NBA All-Star starter:  “First, I want to say thank God for everything going on this year, my team’s success and everything this year, thank God for it. And then the fans, you mean so much to me, thank you so much for voting for me, I would never think of this happening to me, especially right now.  But thank God and thank you fans, and hopefully we can keep it going.”

Game 1:  Boston Celtics (90) @ Orlando Magic (80)

Announcers: Kevin Harlan and Doug Collins with Craig Sager reporting

Collins on Celtics guard Rajon Rondo being one of the best rebounding guards in the NBA: “When you play against a team (that shoots) a lot of three’s, there are a lot of long rebounds.  That’s why your guards have to come back (and rebound).  (Rajon) Rondo is one of the best rebounding guards in the NBA and when he gets those rebounds he can push it into automatic fast breaks.  (Celtics head coach) Doc Rivers has talked to his team about getting those long rebounds and getting to loose basketballs.”

Collins on the importance of Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo and Magic point guard Jameer Nelson to their respective teams: “When (Rajon Rondo) plays well, the Celtics are almost unbeatable.  You know what you’re going to get from the other three guys (Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen), great defense every night.  Jameer Nelson’s numbers say the same thing for the Orlando Magic, when he is terrific, they don’t lose.”

Collins on what Celtics Kevin Garnett brings to the team: “Every day in practice, (Kevin Garnett) brings energy, toughness and leadership.  When you have a guy like that bringing it, then you better bring it as well.”

Collins on why Magic guard J.J. Redick needs to remain patient with his lack of playing time: “J.J. (Redick) always has to stay ready, there could be an injury or something could happen and his coach will call on him and if he plays well, his coach will trust him.  That’s what’s happening now; J.J. is playing well and getting minutes.  You have to talk to young players, they cannot get discouraged or disappointed.  They’ve got to keep working and then take advantage of their opportunities.”

Halftime

Johnson, Smith, Webber and Payton

Smith on what he thinks makes a player an NBA All-Star: “You can’t only be a scorer on a bad team or a great statistical guy on a bad team.  You’ve got to be a good statistical guy, you’ve got to be on a good team, you’ve got to be a leader and you’ve got to be able to elevate (your game).  All of those things make an All-Star.”

Webber on why players on bad teams should be considered for the All-Star team: “(When I played) I never got to hire a coach, I never got to draft any players and no matter how good your team is, everyone gave that (great) effort.  I had a great GM and owners in Sacramento.  There were times when I didn’t (have a great GM or owners), that didn’t matter.  We always throw players away that play on bad teams.  It’s an organization that makes great teams, not one player.”

*****     *****     *****     *****     *****

Collins on the top Eastern Conference teams playing well against the West: “This is the first year in nine that the East has had a better record against the West, so maybe the balance of power is shifting at the top for the East.”

TNT’s Craig Sager interviewed Magic head coach Stan Van Gundy after the third quarter.

Van Gundy on the problems that the Celtics defense is causing the Magic: “We can’t get good shots against them, we’ve really struggled.  No matter what we run we cannot get good shots. Their defense has locked us up.  They are doing a good job, they are staying home forcing the guy with the ball to make the play at the rim.  We have not been able to finish, we can’t get any ball movement, it’s all one-on-one stuff.”

Harlan on the defense of Celtics forward Glen Davis: “(Glen Davis) would make a great NFL left tackle, getting low under the pads, that’s what they call him on that offensive line.”

Collins on Magic center Dwight Howard being out of rhythm during the game:  “It’s one of those nights that Dwight Howard has been a half step behind most every play, it seems like he’s been in the wrong spot most of the night and he can’t get anything going. Interestingly enough, he was caught in traffic before the game and was about a half hour late getting to the game.  Guys get out of their schedules, these guys are creatures of habit, you get out of your normal schedule and the normal way you warm up.  We heard him in the locker room before talking about the traffic before the game.”

Game 2:  Washington Wizards (97) @ L.A. Lakers (117)

Announcers: Dick Stockton, Reggie Miller and Mike Fratello with Cheryl Miller reporting

TNT’s Cheryl Miller interviewed Wizards coach Ed Tapscott during the game.

Tapscott on how the Wizards will try to combat the size advantage the Lakers have over them: “There is an old saying, ‘the strong take from the weak, the smart take from the strong.’ We’ve got to be smarter than them if they are stronger than us, so better execution is going to be the key for us.”

Miller: “So Coach, size does matter?”

Tapscott:  “It does on occasion, yes it does.”

Miller on the Wizards trying to outsmart the Lakers:  “If (coach Ed Tapscott) thinks they are going to outsmart the Lakers with no Gilbert Arenas, no Brendan Haywood and no DeShawn Stephenson, then I have some land down south that I want to sell Ed Tapscott because there is no way that is going to happen.”

Miller on his belief that players should not be selected to the NBA All-Star team if they are on a team with a bad record:  “No disrespect to a lot of those guys, but I’ve never been a big fan of rewarding guys when their teams are in second to last or third to last in a conference, even if that takes guys such as (Cavaliers guard) Mo Williams or (Magic guard) Jameer Nelson making the squad.  You could talk about (center) Andrew Bynum making it for the Lakers.  They do have the best record in the league, why can’t they have three representatives?”

Miller on which players he thinks deserved to be voted NBA All-Star starters: “In the West, I would have liked to have seen (Mavericks forward) Dirk (Nowitzki) make it, I think he’s having an MVP year.  If you look at his numbers they are very close to the year he won the MVP.  And I like the big fella (Suns center) Shaq (O’Neal), I know he’s not playing back-to-backs, but Shaq is putting up some pretty big numbers. I know Yao (Ming) is voted in and I think Dirk should make it over (Suns forward) Amar’e (Stoudemire).”

Fratello on which Eastern players should have been considered for the NBA All-Star starters:  “My Eastern guys I would have considered, I think Vince Carter should have been considered over AI (Allen Iverson) in that spot because Vince has done a heck of a job keeping the Nets right around the 500 mark.  Another guy who has come on gangbusters since his injury is Michael Redd, he has been terrific for Milwaukee and their surge lately. And Joe Johnson in Atlanta has got that team on the winning side, with a lot of injuries. AI would be the one I would question.”

Halftime

Johnson, Smith, Webber and Payton

Payton on Reggie Miller’s opinion of giving more All-Star consideration to players on winning teams:  “Tell Reggie (Miller) we should just play with the Lakers, Boston and those types of players, then you don’t think about these other teams. These guys on these other teams deserve the same kind of look that the guys on the good teams deserve.  They are still NBA basketball players, these guys do the same thing, they put their jerseys on just like everyone else and play basketball, but they don’t get recognized because they’re on a losing team.”

Smith on when a player on a bad team should be an All-Star: “There is an exception to every rule, there is a guy who is going to be in this league who’s going to be on bad teams and he should possibly be on the All-Star team.  There is going to be an exception, but as a collection, the collection of All-Stars should come from teams that win.  There will be an Al Jefferson possibly, there will be a Danny Granger possibly, but if you equate them equally with guys who win games.”

Smith on footage of Craig Sager dancing with a Magic performer on the sideline:  “Craig looks like he’s got a walkman on, he’s dancing to a different beat. He’s no Barack Obama.”

*****     *****     *****     *****     *****

TNT’s Cheryl Miller interviewed Dallas Cowboys’ wide receiver Terrell Owens during the game.

Owens on who he thinks will win each conference in the NBA: “In the West (Conference) I would have to go with the Lakers since I’m here.  The East (Conference) is very strong.  You’ve got Boston, who are the World Champions and you’ve got the Cleveland Cavaliers, who are playing very well with the leadership of LeBron (James).”

Owens on the speculation following him and the Cowboys since the end of the NFL season: “You know what, I’m going to be a Cowboy until I retire.  As far as the coaching changes, right now, I’m sure (Cowboys owner) Jerry Jones is evaluating a lot of things and hopefully we can get people in place and get back at it and go for it.”

Owens on his relationship with Cowboys QB Tony Romo: “(Tony Romo is) my boy.  We’re good.  Obviously, there were some things said over the course of the season but that’s my boy.  We’re gonna’ try to get this thing back on track and bring a championship to Dallas.”

Owens on who he thinks will win the Super Bowl: “I talked to (Cardinals WR) Larry Fitzgerald before the Philly game a little bit via text messaging and I’m going to go with the NFC (in the Super Bowl).  I want the Arizona Cardinals to win and hopefully Kurt Warner can get that second Super Bowl Trophy.

Miller on Lakers forward Vladimir Radmanovic being late to shoot around and sitting for part of the game:  “When you come to shoot around with only five minutes left because you say your alarm clock didn’t go off, that’s a little spacey. He could say traffic was bad, I could go with that in L.A., but don’t say your alarm clock didn’t go off. Are you kidding me?”

TNT’s Cheryl Miller interviewed Lakers forward Pau Gasol after the Lakers’ victory.

Gasol on the strong performance of Lakers center Andrew Bynum: “They are letting (Bynum) go to work, and that’s something he’s taking advantage of. He’s being aggressive and he’s putting up big numbers the last couple of nights and we want to be aggressive.  So it’s great for his confidence and great for our team.”

Inside the NBA presented by Hyundai

Johnson, Smith, Webber and Payton

Smith on the Lakers being the best team in the NBA: “The Lakers are just a smidgen better and I think there has been an overall (sense of) urgency from the Lakers that you normally don’t see from those guys.  They usually come on late in the second half.  There has been some urgency in the first half (of the season).”

Webber how President Obama inspires him to do more for the community: “I met Mr. Obama and he inspired me.  As soon as I met him, I wanted to do more.  I think (President Obama) is telling us is to lead.  We can do little things (that make a difference).  You don’t have to be a big corporation.  He is a grass-roots, ‘lets do it together’ type of guy and I hope he has inspired others as he has inspired me to make sure that I continue to give back (to the community).”

Smith on how he feels President Obama has united the country: “I was happy to see that (President Obama) united everyone, all races, colors, creeds and religions.  I would say most of the Nation feels united.  Regardless of if the recession ends and everyone starts to flourish, regardless of if things are poor and don’t turn around right away, we are in it together (as a country).  When you win a championship in basketball, it’s fun when it’s with your team.  If you’re going through hard times, it’s ok if you’re with your family and people who support you.  Right now, America feels like we are going through this together, it doesn’t feel separated anymore.”

Webber on how the country can unite to help President Obama: “If you look at (President Obama) and what kind of leader he is, he never gets out of sorts.  He got everyone to believe together and it’s the lessons that we learn in crisis that really helps us build our character.  I hope we remember that we are going through it together, there are no color barriers, and he is telling us to do it.  Let’s help him become the President he wants to be.”

Payton: “Man, you should become a speaker.  I like that.”

Webber: “You know what? (Viewers) can see that on NBA TV every Tuesday night.”

TNT’s Craig Sager interviewed Celtics forward Kevin Garnett after the Celtics’ victory.

Garnett on if it’s a challenge to play hard every night: “It’s not hard to work hard.  It’s not hard to bring effort every night.  That’s not hard for me to come out here and give everything I have.  That’s not hard at all.  That’s energy and effort.  A lot of things about basketball involve effort.  You can practice things, you can mold talent and you can work on skill but at the end of the day, it’s about effort and heart.”
