“After watching all the games last week, I don’t know if there’s a team in the league that I saw that was better than the Ravens. They dominated in every phase.” – Kurt Warner on the Baltimore Ravens’ Week 1 performance vs. Pittsburgh
“If they lost Tom Brady today, we’d be talking about them the same way we talk about the Indianapolis Colts right now without Peyton Manning.” – Marshall Faulk on Patriots QB Tom Brady
“There’s nothing wrong with [Chad Ochocinco] saying that. I got a problem with [Tedy] Bruschi saying all of that. And if it was still ‘The Patriot Way,’ Chad wouldn’t be there. The Patriot Way is dead.” – Michael Irvin on former Patriots LB Tedy Bruschi’s response to a tweet from Patriots WR Chad Ochocinco
“He’s in the Southern California area throwing balls to T.J. Houshmandzadeh…” – Jason La Canfora reports on Carson Palmer
NFL GameDay Morning is the FIRST pregame show on the air Sunday morning at 9:00 AM ET, taking viewers straight up to kickoff. Host Rich Eisen joins analysts Michael Irvin, Warren Sapp, Marshall Faulk, Steve Mariucci and new analyst Kurt Warner to bring fans the latest news, injury reports, pregame analysis and game previews.
Quotes from NFL GameDay Morning:
“I always enjoyed coaching a veteran team because they’re very resilient. I don’t think they blink after getting beat down by the Ravens.” – Steve Mariucci on the Pittsburgh Steelers
“Any time you find yourself coming off of a Super Bowl loss and the Super Bowl slump is being tossed around, your quarterback, his play has to be great. He cannot be the guy that you’re going to hang your hat on that may lose you the game.” – Marshall Faulk on Ben Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh Steelers
“John is a veteran coach. He will not factor in the fan’s opinion on his decision making process. He’s the head coach, he’s the CEO of that company.” – Steve Mariucci on Broncos head coach John Fox and the Broncos QB situation
“After watching all the games last week, I don’t know if there’s a team in the league that I saw that was better than the Ravens. They dominated in every phase.” – Kurt Warner on the Baltimore Ravens’ Week 1 performance vs. Pittsburgh
“When Tom Brady doesn’t have success, this team loses. He covers up a lot of mistakes, a lot of youth, a lot of situations with their receivers and such where they can’t be explosive without Tom making plays, and making special plays.” – Kurt Warner on Patriots QB Tom Brady
“Every now and then, we get a ridiculous tweet out there and we’ll show it. This was not one of those ridiculous tweets. To me, this tweet by Ochocinco was a compliment to his offense.” – Steve Mariucci on Chad Ochocinco’s tweet about the Patriots’ offense against the Dolphins
“When they had seven turnovers, it wasn’t the old guys that were throwing interceptions, it wasn’t the old guys that were fumbling it. It was some of that youth as well.” – Kurt Warner on the Steelers loss to the Ravens last week
“There’s not enough Halloween costumes in a Halloween superstore to mask a whole football team…Tom Brady can’t improve their pass rush, but he can give them a lead in which they can go out and rush the passer.” – Warren Sapp on if Patriots QB Tom Brady masks the Patriots’ problems
“The hardest thing for Chad is transitioning from being the man to fitting into a plan.” – Michael Irvin on Patriots WR Chad Ochocinco adjusting to New England’s offense
“There is a spot right by [Tom] Brady for the next top quarterback while Peyton [Manning] is sidelined.” – Michael Irvin on Tom Brady and the Patriots taking on Philip Rivers and the Chargers
“As great as he is, that team will have some weaknesses that will not allow them to go to a Super Bowl and those weaknesses will show up come playoff time.” – Michael Irvin on Patriots QB Tom Brady
“[The fans] showed him support like he’s never seen before and he let them down. This is part of his redemption; to show them that he’s worthy of that support that they gave.” – Michael Irvin on Eagles QB Michael Vick’s return to Atlanta
“He cannot turn this into a grudge match because the Atlanta Falcons did not get rid of the Michael Vick the football player; they got rid of Michael Vick the person because they didn’t like that kind of person in which he was. Michael has to go into this game understanding that he has to be the Michael Vick the quarterback – the $5 million Michael Vick. Last week, I saw the old, $100 million Michael Vick, the one that was in Atlanta.” – Marshall Faulk on Michael Vick’s return to Atlanta
“He’s done everything he has to do on the football field from the redemption part of it. He has to do it off the field, so I don’t think this game just because he’s going back to Atlanta has any more importance than any other game.” – Kurt Warner on the importance of Michael Vick returning to Atlanta
“Ben [Roethlisberger] turns the football over. But at crucial times in the football game, he finds a way to win the football game, where Tony finds a way to lose the football game.” – Marshall Faulk on Cowboys QB Tony Romo
“He reminds me of a young Peyton Manning. The big knock on Peyton Manning was yes, he was extremely successful in all of the areas similar to Tony Romo, but he couldn’t win the big one. It took him eight years to get there to win that championship, to win the Super Bowl and to put all of those doubters away. I find Tony Romo in that same vein: he’s a winner, he does everything right; he just hasn’t won that ultimate prize yet which I think is still lingering out there for him.” – Kurt Warner on Cowboys QB Tony Romo
“They’re used to dealing with Julius [Peppers]; they had him in Carolina, they know what to do with him, so I’m not really worried about Peppers in that sense. They’ll handle him.” – Marshall Faulk on the New Orleans Saints against Bears DE Julius Peppers
“Where I say they are most vulnerable is in the play-calling right now. You have Mark Sanchez putting down 44 [passing] attempts with just 16 attempts rushing. Do not fool yourself: you are having success running the football and playing defense. You insert Mark Sanchez in moments; you don’t make him the primary.” – Michael Irvin on where the New York Jets are the most vulnerable
“Those big throws with that big arm is what made Donovan McNabb, Donovan McNabb. So my worry is why are the Minnesota Vikings not allowing him to do that? Is that not confidence in Donovan McNabb? Or are they just afraid to say we’re going to leave it on that guy in the backfield [Adrian Peterson]?” – Kurt Warner on Vikings QB Donovan McNabb after throwing for 39 yards in Week 1
Bold Predictions:
Steve Mariucci: Rex Grossman will lead all QBs in fantasy points this week
Marshall Faulk: Chad Ochocinco will have a big day against San Diego
Kurt Warner: The Kansas City Chiefs will give up 40 points vs. Lions
Warren Sapp: The San Diego Chargers will snap Patriots’ home win streak of 17 regular season games
Michael Irvin: Michael Vick will get a standing ovation today in Atlanta vs. Falcons
Jason La Canfora Reports:
On QB Carson Palmer:
“He’s working out, he’s staying in great shape. He’s in the Southern California area throwing balls to T.J. Houshmandzadeh, his longtime Bengals teammate. He does not have any plans to return to Cincinnati; his retirement though is from the Bengals, not from football as a whole. If for any reason the Bengals were to change face and trade him before the deadline, he would be ready to go. If Andy Dalton shows he’s the real deal and after the season the Bengals decide let’s get rid of Carson Palmer, Dalton is the future, Carson would be ready to go. He’s divorced from the Bengals but not from football. He is working out very hard.”
On Panthers QB Cam Newton:
“You have to go back to the lockout and that window at the Draft where it was lifted. He got a full playbook. He was down there for six weeks in Bradenton, Florida at the IMG Academy with Chris Weinke and Ken Dorsey who know that playbook inside and out, who have ties to that system through Rob Chudzinski, the new offensive coordinator there. By the time Marty Hurney, the general manager of the Carolina Panthers, got his hands on Cam Newton, he told me this kid already had a lot of our verbiage down, he had already had a six-week installation period down in Florida that was almost like OTAs. He came in and hit the ground running. That’s why he was able to do what he could so soon in Week 1.”
On Coaches on the Hot Seat:
“You have to look at Kansas City and head coach Todd Haley. When Todd Haley and [General Manager] Scott Pioli first got together, you talk to a lot of league insiders and people who knew them, they wondered how strong and long of a marriage that would be. They worried about the potential for friction with such strong personalities. They haven’t been able to have any continuity on offense: the revolving door at coordinator, Haley’s role shifting from year to year, Matt Cassel seemingly regressing since Charlie Weis left the building, and that poor start Week 1. I think you have to look at Haley. If that team doesn’t come close to where they were last year, heads could roll.”
On David Garrard:
“I spoke to Garrard’s agent this morning and he’s looking for somewhere he can go and play right away. So from that aspect, it’s going to be an injury somewhere else that knocks somebody out that lets Garrard come in, learn the system for a week and go and play. The five teams or so that have contacted him to this point have been more about a backup role. He’s all about playing at this point in his career.”
