ESPN’s BCS Bowl Survival Guide

December 30, 2011 By admin

By January 1, 2012, you will have watched more than two dozen bowl games on ESPN networks, eaten more appetizers, pies and cookies than any reasonable person should, played hooky from work, ignored your household chores, and now, you’re staring down the five biggest bowls of the season: The BCS Bowls on ESPN. Have no fear; ESPN’s BCS Bowl Survival Guide is here, complete with this handy BCS lineup card.

Scenario: Your pants and shirts are a little too snug for wearing in public, bordering on indecent and your dog no longer recognizes you; it’s time to hit the gym. But wait, won’t that interfere with watching all that great pre-game coverage from your couch?

Solution: ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN Classic will televise more than 100 hours of BCS Bowl pre-game, game and post-game coverage January 2 thru January 10. In addition, College GameDay Built by The Home Depot or College Football Live will originate from all five BCS Bowls. Whether you’re at home or on the treadmill, elliptical or stationary bike, you won’t miss a beat.

Scenario: In the holiday gifting aftermath, you discover you’ve got to return four funky fruitcakes, three tacky ties, two French hens and one hideous holiday sweater from Aunt Marge. Many long drives in traffic await you.

Solution: ESPN Radio’s BCS Bowl coverage of all five BCS Bowls will keep you company through the stoplights, rubbernecking and road rage of holiday returns season.

Scenario: Your wife not-so-subtly reminds you to take down the holiday decorations – your very own “festival of lights”- complete with 50 strands of blinking bulbs covering every inch of your roof. Yes, you were king of the neighborhood this year. But now you’re going to miss pre-game coverage for your favorite BCS Bowl game.

Solution: You won’t miss a thing. Grab a sweater, a ladder, some snacks and your cell phone – you’re going to be awhile. With ESPN Mobile, you’ll see clips, highlights and receive scores from GameCast and the WatchESPN app. She’ll never know.

Scenario: To start the new year off right, your company sends you to a full day and night seminar on work-life balance the day of your favorite BCS Bowl. Oh, the irony…

Solution: You’ve got this. Grab a conference-issued folder, insert your tablet, select WatchESPN app. Voila! You’ll see all the coverage on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3 and ESPNU right there (on ESPN3) in that chilly conference room.

Scenario: Once back in the office, your mailbox is so full that you find yourself paralyzed to do anything about it. Instead, you daydream about LSU’s offensive schemes vs. SEC foe Alabama.

Solution: Fire up the office Internet. ESPN.com’s blogs, columns and 360-degree look at the teams and towns of the BCS Bowl games awaits you with an individual page for every bowl.

Scenario: To welcome in 2012, your significant other has “accidentally” given your casual clothes to charity (i.e. the dumpster), even that sweatshirt you love with the talking bears cartoon.

Solution: You’re in luck. The BCS apparel line is online now and available in select stores. You needed that wardrobe overhaul anyhow.

Scenario: Did we mention he or she also deep-sixed your leisure reading material?

Solution: ESPN The Magazine’s “Take Two” and “Technique” articles break down the Allstate BCS National Championship matchup with additional content at ESPN Insider.

Scenario: Your return flight from (insert country) where you (insert activity) and even (insert activity) with (insert name) is delayed two days and you’re going to miss the Allstate BCS National Championship.

Solution: Relax and grab a (insert beverage of country you are visiting), ESPN International has all five BCS Bowls live in more countries than your passport has pages.

Scenario: ¿Qué? ¿Necesitas ver el juego en español con tu familia?

Solution: No problem. For the first time ever, ESPN Deportes will televise the Allstate BCS National Championship (U.S. only). Qué comience la acción!

NBC Sports Group Broadcasts 2012 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic® & Launches NBC Sports Network On Jan. 2

December 27, 2011 By admin

Fifth NHL Winter Classic Presented Live on NBC at 1 p.m. ET

“A holiday tradition.” — Newsday

NBC Sports Group to Air 26 Hours of Hockey Programming Surrounding the Winter Classic Beginning with NHL Alumni Game on Dec. 31 at 1 p.m. ET on VERSUS

VERSUS Becomes NBC Sports Network at 4 p.m. ET on Jan. 2 with Special NHL Live Winter Classic Post-Game Show Hosted by Bob Costas from Philadelphia

NEW YORK – December 27, 2011 – January 2 is an important day for the NBC Sports Group as it broadcasts the 2012 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic at 1 p.m. ET on NBC and launches the NBC Sports Network, currently VERSUS, immediately following the game at 4 p.m. ET with a special NHL Live post-game show hosted by Bob Costas from Philadelphia.

NHL WINTER CLASSIC: This year’s game features an intense rivalry between the top two teams in the Atlantic Division as the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Rangers battle outdoors at Citizen’s Bank Park in Philadelphia, home of the Phillies. This is the fifth iteration of the NHL Winter Classic, an event created by both NBC Sports and the NHL, and that has already been described as “a holiday tradition” by Newsday.

NBC’s coverage of the Winter Classic will be hosted by Costas, a 22-time Emmy Award-winner. He will be joined by NBC Sports Group studio analysts Mike Milbury and Jeremy Roenick for coverage on NBC and post-game coverage on NBC Sports Network. NBC’s game coverage will be led by Emmy Award-winner Mike “Doc” Emrick (play-by-play) Eddie Olczyk (analyst), and Pierre McGuire (inside-the-glass reporter).

Last year’s Winter Classic was the most-watched NHL regular-season game in 36 years. Played between the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins from Heinz Field in Pittsburgh and broadcast on New Year’s Day in primetime due to a weather delay, the game was watched by 4.5 million viewers.

FROM VERSUS TO NBC SPORTS NETWORK: As part of a new strategy to bring all four tiers of NBC Sports Group’s assets (broadcast network, two national cable networks, 11 regional sports networks and digital) into a consistent framework of branding, VERSUS will be re-named the NBC Sports Network on Jan. 2 at 4 p.m. ET. The NBC Sports Network will serve as a 24/7 cable platform for NBC Sports’ rich heritage of unmatched storytelling, best-in-class production and broad promotional power. Following are highlights of Dec. 31-Jan. 2 programming:

  • Prior to being re-branded, VERSUS will kick-off the weekend with the 2012 NHL Winter Classic Alumni Game featuring former Philadelphia Flyers against former New York Rangers in a New Year’s Eve showdown on Dec. 31 at 1 p.m. ET. The Alumni Game will showcase six members of the Hockey Hall of Fame, recent retirees and Stanley Cup winners, including Mark Messier, Brian Leetch, Eric Lindros and NBC Sports’ Jeremy Roenick. NBC Sports Network guest analyst and former Rangers coach Mike Keenan, who won the Stanley Cup in 1994 while coaching the team, will lead the Rangers alumni team.

PRESS EVENT: Below are highlights of a NBC Sports Group and NHL press event held on Dec. 21 in 30 Rock’s famed Studio 8H with the following participants:

  • Mike ‘Doc’ Emrick – NBC Sports NHL lead play-by-play commentator
  • Sam Flood – Executive Producer, NBC Sports & NBC Sports Network
  • Jon Miller – President, Programming, NBC Sports & NBC Sports Network
  • John Collins – NHL Chief Operating Officer
  • Peter Luukko – Comcast-Spectacor, President & COO
  • Adam Graves – Former New York Ranger and the team’s current Special Assistant for Prospect Development and Community Relations

Click here for an NBCU Direct video of Emrick, Flood and Miller speaking at the event: http://www.nbcudirect.com/nhlwinterclassic122711/

COSTAS ON THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE WINTER CLASSIC: “All of us at NBC, everybody in the stands and most importantly all the players understood, even as it began, that this was something not just out of the ordinary. This was something that was going to be tremendously successful.”

EMRICK ON THE CHALLENGES THAT COME WITH CALLING AN OUTDOOR GAME: “I try to look at it as a player, and how they play regardless what happens. I also take the wisdom of our producer before we start. Sam always says, remember, a lot of people that don’t normally watch hockey are going to watch this. I think those two things together are the thing that I focus on, and you try to not get in the way and just let the celebration begin with the opening face-off and go from there.”

FLOOD ON PRODUCTION: “We treat it as an event. This is not a hockey game, it’s an event. We want to make it bigger because of the field it’s being played on. It’s not in a confined building; it’s outdoors. So we have an airplane. I was so proud in Buffalo when we played the first replay of a goal from an airplane. We knew we were the first people ever do that because no one had ever covered a game with an airplane before, so we thought that was a neat trick. We’re also using a CableCam for the second time. We’ve figured out cool ways to use that CableCam that we see in every NFL game, but you can’t do it in a hockey game, but it works here. We’ve figured out how to make it special and unique.”

“We have all the bells and whistles, 30 cameras for a hockey game we have more cameras than players on each team which is a nice treat to have for a production team to go have some fun with it. The goal is to make people fall in love with a hockey game the way it first began, which is outdoors, under the open sky, which is how I played as a kid in the Boston area.”

LUUKKO ON WHAT HOSTING THE EVENT MEANTS TO PHILADELPHIA: “When you can be showcased in an event like this. I think a lot of the reason that people look at us as an original six type team is we’ve only had one face. We’ve been consistent in our play.”

“This game propels your organization. In our case, selling out the Alumni Game, selling out, obviously, the Winter Classic.”

GRAVES ON RANGERS-FLYERS MATCH-UP: “The best part for me with this year’s game is that both teams are firing on all cylinders and they’re both at the top of the conference. Whenever you get these teams together, they’re both fast teams, they’re good on specialty teams, and they’re both very, very intense.”

MILLER ON THE LAUNCH OF NBC SPORTS NETWORK: “Clearly there’s been a lot of work going on with the rebranding and the re-launch. The idea to flip it on Jan. 2 gave us the window of using a high-profile event that is big to NBC and to the NHL. What better place to re-launch and tell the world about what your new brand is going to be than around this event.”

MILLER ON WHAT FANS CAN EXPECT ON NBC SPORTS NETWORK: “We have three tranches of programming that we’re looking to put on NBC Sports Network starting with live events, live games, and big-league relationships. The second tranche is original news, talk and conversation. The third tranche is the original programming we’ve developed with the NHL around shows like NHL 36 with the NFL, with NFL Turning Point, the Bob Costas Show that will be breaking this year, Costas Tonight, as well as the Costas Town Halls. We’ll embrace the brands that are already associated with NBC Sports like the Triple Crown. We’ve added the MLS to our portfolio. We have a strong, robust relationship with the Tour de France, and then we will obviously have an extensive Olympic presence come June, July and August with the Olympic trials, then actually live Olympic programming throughout the game.”

Pregame

Announcers: Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal and Kenny Smith

Barkley on the opening game being a “must win” for the NY Knicks against the Celtics: “If they lose this game, it will be tough on them mentally.”

O’Neal predicting the Dallas Mavericks will be the top seed in the Western Conference: “(I choose) the Mavericks because they won it last year. Dirk Nowitzki finally knows how it feels to be at the next level and he wants to feel like that again.”

Smith on the Sacramento Kings and Golden State Warriors making it to the Playoffs: “There are going to be two surprises in the West. This might be the year that (guard) Tyreke Evans becomes that big leader of that young team and they get in the Playoffs.”

Barkley predicting the top three teams in the Western Conference: “The(Memphis) Grizzlies, Oklahoma City Thunder and the (Dallas) Mavericks are the three best teams in the West. These are three teams that I want to see.”

Barkley on the Memphis Grizzlies: “I want to see what Memphis can do. The key to that team is (forward) Rudy Gay. I want to see how he comes back and blends with those guys.”

Smith on Lamar Odom being an asset to the Dallas Mavericks: ” There is no other power forward that does the things he can do. He can actually play multiple positions. He’s going to help them tremendously.”

Smith on the Los Angeles Clippers being a contender in the West: “There is no excuse for the Los Angeles Clippers anymore. They have every piece they need to be a contender. You gain three players (Chris Paul, Chauncey Billups and Caron Butler) and all of a sudden you have your coach set and your team set. If you lose now, it is the Clipper curse.”

O’Neal on the Los Angeles Clippers: “The new name for the Clippers is “Lob City”. On the break they are very interesting to watch. DeAndre Jordan is not your average center. Their team is much grittier. If they don’t get it done this year, it is the Clipper curse.”

Barkley on predicting the top two teams in the Eastern Conference: “The (Miami) Heat and the (Chicago) Bulls are head and shoulders above everyone else. They are far-and-away the best two teams in the East.”

Smith on New York Knicks point guard Toney Douglas: “What makes a great point guard is not just scoring and assists. It is the ability to force the tempo of the game you want. I don’t know if Toney Douglas can do that. He’s really a two-guard converting to a point guard.”

O’Neal on the Boston Celtics dominating the Eastern Conference: “I see the Celtics coming out of the East. It is a shortened season and I played for (head coach) Doc Rivers. Doc Rivers does a good job of managing people’s bodies. (Rajon) Rondo is going to be playing with a chip on his shoulder so I like the Celtics for the East.”

Smith on the Chicago Bulls being a defensive powerhouse: “Chicago (Bulls) is probably the favorite because they have everyone back and they added (guard) Rip Hamilton. Defensively they can stop you. You take that into account and the best defensive team in basketball might be the Chicago Bulls. This is a team -that in 66 games- can really separate themselves in the Eastern Conference better than anyone else.”

**** **** **** ****

Game 1: Boston Celtics (104) @ New York Knicks (106)

Announcers: Marv Albert (play-by-play), Steve Kerr (analyst) with Craig Sager, reporting.

Kerr on Boston Celtics guard Rajon Rondo: “He has had a great run with Boston. He’s going to have to play extremely well for them to win it all this year.”

Kerr on the Boston Celtics: “They are probably the best in the NBA in terms of shutting down the opponent.”

Kerr on NBA teams adjusting to a 66-game schedule: “It will be interesting to see if there is a lot of sloppy play early in the season. All these teams only had two weeks of camp with only seven or eight players on the roster. I would expect teams will need a few weeks to get in the groove.”

Kerr on Knicks guard Iman Shumpert: “He brings athleticism, gets to the rim and creates plays. He has a bright future ahead of him.”

Kerr on the new-look Knicks being a contender in the 2011-12 NBA season: “You can see the Knicks are going to be pretty good. They have too much talent for this not to work. The question is how good. They can become a contender to win the title. I think the guy that will have a say in that is (guard) Baron Davis. He’s got so much to prove, he’s got so much potential. If Baron can come in and give the Knicks what he gave Golden State (Warriors) a few years ago, it could work and be something to watch.”

**** **** **** ****

Halftime

Announcers: Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal and Kenny Smith

Barkley on Boston Celtics guard Rajon Rondo: “Rondo is terrific. He is flat out terrific. He is a beautiful player to watch. He makes players around him better.”

**** **** **** ****

Kerr on the power of Celtics guard Rajon Rondo: “There is really nobody like him. He’s so quick; he’s got such great arms and anticipation. We see the type of pressure he puts on the defense, clearly a one-man fast break. When he’s engaged and in tune with his teammates, he’s a wrecking force out there.”

**** **** **** ****

TNT’s Craig Sager interviewed New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony after the game

Anthony on the New York Knicks winning 106-104 against the Boston Celtics: “It wasn’t easy; we knew it was going to be a battle. We stuck with it and we won the game tonight.”

“Privately, I’m told, the Jets are beginning to consider at least the possibility that (Mark) Sanchez isn’t the answer.” – Mike Florio

Patrick: “New England, Baltimore, Pittsburgh. I’m not sure your order, but we would agree, those are the three best teams in the AFC.”

Dungy: “It kind of changes moment by moment. Right now I’d have to say New England first, they’re on a seven-game winning streak; and then Baltimore and then Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh’s got some injuries.”

Harrison: “I like Pittsburgh at No. 2. I like Baltimore at No. 3 because they can’t win on the road.”

ON GIANTS-COWBOYS

Dungy: “The Cowboys have a great receiving core and they can attack the Giants, if they can protect up front.”

Harrison: “The way you slow up a pass rush is run the football.”

Florio: “Every indication is (that) the swelling will go down and (Tony) Romo will be available Sunday night against the Giants.”

ON RAVENS-BENGALS

Harrison: “I like Baltimore, but Cincinnati has a chance. They have to change that mentality, come out and play loose. Don’t get caught up in the moment…Come out and play aggressive, take it to the Baltimore Ravens.”

Dungy: “They’ve got to stop Ray Rice. I don’t like the way Baltimore’s played on the road.”

ON VIKINGS

King: “Look for the Vikings to sign a long-term deal and to build a new stadium in Minnesota, so that they will not be a candidate to move to Los Angeles…The Vikings are going to stay in Minneapolis.”

King: “Talked to Leslie Frazier today. Yes, ACL tear for Adrian Peterson and probably also MCL damage. He told me, ‘Adrian is going to attack this rehab viciously, but everything is going to have to go perfect if Adrian Peterson is going to start opening day 2012.’”

ON JETS

Florio: “Privately, I’m told, the Jets are beginning to consider at least the possibility that Sanchez isn’t the answer. He’s under contract for two more years.”

ON BEARS

Michaels: “It’s been the tale of three seasons.”

Costas: “Cutler is scheduled to have the pin removed from his broken thumb on Tuesday. If the Bears somehow win tonight and the Falcons win tomorrow night in New Orleans, thus keeping Chicago’s playoff hopes alive, in that case, Cutler says he’ll try to practice this week in hopes of playing next week in Minnesota.”

LONG-FORM FEATURES

Because of the unique Christmas-night broadcast, Football Night presented two long-form features that capture the spirit of the holiday (Transplant) as well as intensity of the Bears-Packers rivalry (Rivalry in the Heartland).

TRANSPLANT

Football Night traveled to Illinois and Wisconsin to tell the story of a 30+-year Bears season-ticket holder and father of three, who, two years ago, was in need of a liver transplant. As he was losing strength and hope, a match was found from a 32-year-old Wisconsin mother, who died suddenly of a brain aneurysm.

When the liver recipient began corresponding with the donor’s parents, he learned that they were all Packers fans, giving him and his family new perspective on the rivalry, particularly after last season’s NFC Championship game, when the Packers defeated the Bears.

Two weeks ago, the families met for the first time. One family’s loss allowed another to stay together, and the Bears fan to keep attending games with his family members.

RIVALRY IN THE HEARTLAND

This Sunday, Football Night presented a special, extended, in-depth look inside the stories and people behind the NFL’s most-constant, hardest-hitting rivalry, dating back nine decades to the dawn of the league: Bears vs. Packers.

The film, Rivalry in the Heartland, is nearly 15 minutes long, and featured interviews with current and former star players and coaches, including Aaron Rodgers, Brian Urlacher, Paul Hornung, Jim McMahon, Mike Ditka, Donald Driver, Lovie Smith, Willie Davis and a number of fans of both teams, who bring the passion and intensity of the rivalry and the contrasting styles of the cities to life.

The film showcased the memorable but not always lovable characters from the franchises’ early years and legendary championship teams led by Halas and Lombardi, right through modern times with the Fridge and Favre and last year’s NFC Championship Game.

Following are highlights from Costas’ interview with Aaron Rodgers & Mike McCarthy:

AARON RODGERS & MIKE MCCARTHY WITH BOB COSTAS

MCCARTHY ON POSSIBLY SITTING STARTERS NEXT WEEK: “The problem is, and I don’t think people realize, you’re playing with 46 players on Sunday, so you start messing with a number of players, and we’re not a healthy team to begin with, we may not be in a position where we can rest people.”

RODGERS: “There’s a lot of freedom in the offense (for me to change calls)…There’s a trust that’s developed (with McCarthy) over four years of starting. I can anticipate his calls and he understands how I see the field.”
