FOX Super Bowl Tradition Continues

January 28, 2011 By admin

Current and Former NFL Greats, U.S. Military & Diverse Citizenry Featured in

All-New Presentation of the Declaration of Independence

Original Score, Declaration Anthem, Sets Backdrop

New York – The Super Bowl is to unofficial holidays what the Fourth of July is to those officially recognized.  So as 100 million Americans gather to watch the Pittsburgh Steelers take on the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl XLV on Feb. 6, FOX Sports offers an all-new presentation of the Declaration of Independence in what has become a FOX SUPER BOWL SUNDAY tradition.

The piece begins with an introduction and perspective from retired Army General Colin Powell and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell who were filmed at The Rotunda for the Charters of Freedom at The National Archives in Washington, D.C. home of the Declaration of Independence.  The script was written by FOX Sports producer Jennifer Pransky with contributions from Goodell and Powell.  In addition to the Declaration of Independence, it draws inspiration from the Preamble to the Constitution, God Bless America, Pledge of Allegiance and the words of Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson and Powell.

The reading features current and former NFL greats reading excerpts from the document, and the participants were chosen for their extraordinary service to team and country.  Every NFL personality was filmed with either US military personnel or community minded people who represent the diversity that makes America great.  The list of participating players past and present, along with their community representatives, includes: New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees with G.W. Carver High School students in New Orleans; Green Bay Packers wide receiver Donald Driver and cornerback Charles Woodson with employees of Green Bay Packaging; Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward with the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony Orchestra; Washington Redskins quarterback Donovan McNabb and former head coach Joe Gibbs with Army personnel atop the US Chamber of Commerce Building in Washington; former NFL quarterback Jim Plunkett with students from Stanford University’s El Centro Chicano; Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice and future Hall of Famer Tim Brown with the Coast Guard members on San Francisco Bay; Hall of Famer Anthony Munoz with Ohio grain farmers at Mike Farm Enterprises; Hall of Famer Bart Starr with Navy representatives in Alabama; Air Force personnel in Southwest Asia; Dallas Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware with the Cowboys’ Play 60 Salvation Army All-Star Team; Hall of Famer Art Donovan with Marines at National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle, VA.  Donovan served in the Marines during World War II as an anti-aircraft gunner.  He saw action in the Caroline Islands, Leyte Gulf, Iwo Jima, Okinawa and Luzon and is also a member of the US Marine Corps Sports Hall of Fame.

The piece is set to a new original score titled “Declaration Anthem” composed by Steve Dancz of Placement Music, a new Atlanta-based company with a Grammy-Award winning team specializing in custom music and score.  Dancz, who has composed and conducted numerous orchestral pieces for television and film, is director of Jazz Studies at the University of Georgia.  The trumpet player on the composition is Charles Arnold, former US Navy fleet musician, who performed for President George H. W. Bush, President Bill Clinton, as well as former President Jimmy Carter. Arnold was a part of the first military band to visit Russia following the fall of the Soviet Union when the Seventh Fleet Band visited Vladivostok in 1992.

This is the fourth time FOX Sports is presenting the Declaration of Independence on Super Bowl Sunday.  The first came prior to Super Bowl XXXVI in 2002, the first Super Bowl following the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.  This is the third version, but only this effort and the first were completely original productions.  Besides the unique locations that serve as backdrops, patriotic images are sprinkled throughout and include several renowned paintings including “The Declaration” by Barry Faulkner, which is located over the Declaration of Independence at the National Archives; a rendering of King George III by Alan Ramsay; “Declaration of Independence” by John Trumbell, which is located in the US Capitol Rotunda, along with Independence Hall and the Jefferson Memorial.

SB XLV on FOX Press Call Excerpts and Replay Information

January 28, 2011 By admin

SUPER BOWL XLV ON FOX PREGAME PRESS CALL

EXCERPTS & REPLAY INFORMATION

Four-time Super Bowl champion quarterback Terry Bradshaw, two-time Super Bowl-winning head coach Jimmy Johnson, Super Bowl Sunday pregame host Curt Menefee, FOX NFL SUNDAY coordinating producer Scott Ackerson and FOX Sports Media Group Chairman David Hill participated in a media conference call today to preview Super Bowl XLV between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Green Bay Packers and FOX SUPER BOWL SUNDAY pregame show coverage. Excerpts of today’s call are below.

Below is the link to the SUPER BOWL XLV ON FOX BROADCAST GUIDE that contains Super Bowl Sunday broadcast details, production facts, detailed camera chart of Cowboys Stadium, ratings history and more. Please contact the FOX Sports Media Relations office if you have any questions or trouble downloading.

http://static.foxsports.com/content/fscom//binary/2011/01/26/_COMPLETE_BROADCAST_GUIDE1296078077221.pdf

Bradshaw on how he approaches broadcasting a Super Bowl that involves the Steelers: “I’m thrilled to be doing the Super Bowl and certainly to have the Steelers in it. I know the organization and the passion is there. I’m good at setting my feelings aside and say how I really feel no matter who is playing. I’ve already thought about what it would be like to stand in the middle of Cowboys Stadium and present the Lombardi Trophy to Steelers owner Dan Rooney. I’ve already thought about that and how cool it would be since I was a part of the first Super Bowl team that saw Art Rooney get the Lombardi Trophy after Super Bowl IX in the dressing room. That trophy presentation is done a little bit different now.  I’m excited for Pittsburgh but if Green Bay were to win it I’d be excited for them. We just know that I’m a Steelers guy. I have no problem doing the show and answering questions about anything pertaining to the football game whether it’s negative or positive for Pittsburgh. Where is my heart? You know where it is. It’s with the Steelers.”

Hill points to reasons for this year’s record NFL ratings and viewership: “I think the public is getting smarter about the sport. All the pregame shows have instilled the football knowledge and an understanding about the sport. Our addition of Mike Pereira to explain the rules and regulations was done because the more you understand something, the more you enjoy it and the more you can see what’s likely to happen. The spread of HD and widescreen TV’s has made the sport look fantastic and the spread of 5.1 audio surround sound and home theaters has helped. Not just us but our friends at NBC, CBS and ESPN all do a fantastic job with their broadcasts. Also we’re seeing the results of the recession of two years ago where people were saving and not traveling as much so they were home. A lot of people may have discovered football that hadn’t seen it before. There are a myriad of reasons but the secret weapon is Howard Katz, the NFL’s scheduler. If you’re not getting the right matchups in the right markets then you are not putting the most appealing thing in front of people. If you look at the matchups he’s put together week in and week out and year in and year out, his hard work is shining.  The athleticism of the players themselves is truly remarkable.  It’s like Cirque Du Soleil with violence, it’s a beautiful thing.”

Ackerson on the game plan for this year FOX SUPER BOWL SUNDAY pregame show: “One of the things that we’re going to try to do a little differently this time are the red carpet segments. It’s amazing the amount of stars who want to be a part of it now that they’ve seen how it’s gone as opposed to the first time when it was really hard to get people to show up. We’re going to have some segments where we’ll bring in some old Steelers and some 49ers, Cowboys, and hopefully some Packers as well, and tell stories about the Super Bowl in more of a talk show type of format. That really hasn’t been done in the past. There will be plenty of features about the teams but I’ve found that when people watch a Super Bowl, they always notice stuff that’s out of the ordinary. They really don’t sit down and watch the piece on Player A or Player B. A big part of that is because the coverage is so saturated in the week leading up to the Super Bowl that they look at it as same-old same-old. We’re trying to get stories that fans haven’t heard before.”

Hill on the possibility of Super Bowl XLV being the NFL’s last game for a while due to a possible work stoppage: “I hope and pray fervently that it isn’t. With the sport reaching heights that Pete Rozelle would never dreamed of, we want to keep it that way. We know what happens to sports after a strike or a lockout; people turn away and it takes a while for them to come back.  It would be a great tragedy if both sides weren’t able to reach an agreement.  I fervently hope that an agreement is possible, that there’s no lockout, no industry dispute and games go on as scheduled next September.”

Bradshaw on Aaron Rodgers: “You go back to his reaction when he thought he was the starter in Green Bay and then out of retirement came Brett and he handled everything with class and dignity. He had won his football team over without taking a snap on the football field. He’s just a classy guy. He was the perfect person to be behind Brett Favre and take that job over. Absolutely perfect.”

Johnson on Rodgers: “Mike McCarthy has designed an offense that utilizes his skills. Aaron is great in the shotgun with the open set and he’s great with the spread set. He has the ability to scramble and move around; they even run the quarterback draw on occasion. He’s got such a great delivery and he’s so accurate throwing the football.”

Bradshaw on Ben Roethlisberger: “Ben does it with strength. He’s very strong with great presence in the pocket and only moves when he has pressure. Last week against the Jets, he did a spin move that I would show to young quarterbacks and say, ‘you either have this or you don’t.’ It’s basically a feel and great quarterbacks have it. We know about Ben’s off the field problems and that can hurt you with your football team. He seems to have been able to mend that. After he had his suspension, he came back and played rejuvenated and rededicated. He appears to have really straightened himself out. That’s good for him. He’s a superstar in this league and we need our superstars to be held accountable. Hopefully that’s what’s happening with him.”

ESPN Study: Former NFL Players Misuse Prescription Drugs

Former NFL Players Misuse Prescription Drugs at a High Rate

Results Reported on SportsCenter, Outside the Lines, ESPN.com

January 28, 2011

Starting on Friday’s 9 a.m. ET SportsCenter, ESPN and its Emmy-award winning journalism program Outside the Lines (3 p.m. weekdays, 9 a.m. Sundays) will report on results from a ground-breaking scientific study on retired NFL players’ use of painkillers.

The findings of the study show that former players misuse prescription painkillers at a rate more than four times that of the general population. The results are scheduled to be published online on Friday in the peer-reviewed scientific journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence.

The study of 644 former players, commissioned by ESPN with additional funding by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, was led by Dr. Linda Cottler, PhD, and colleagues at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. The study marks the first time researchers have explored the extent of the use and misuse of prescription pain medications by former NFL players. Painkiller abuse in the general population has reached epidemic proportions in the United States, according to experts.

Researchers found more than half of the retired NFL players surveyed reported using prescription painkillers during their playing days and, of that same group, 71% admitted misusing the drugs during their time in the NFL.

Study Results on ESPN Television Platforms
ESPN will report on the published study’s results Friday on SportsCenter and Outside the Lines. Sunday’s Outside the Lines will present in-depth pieces by reporter John Barr on former players who have struggled with the use of prescription painkillers

“I was taking about 1,000 Vicodins a month. People go ‘That’s impossible. That’s crazy.’ No, it’s exactly what I was taking. I mean, believe me, I’d love to be off medications. That’s my worry everyday, to make sure I have medication.” — Dan Johnson, Dolphins tight end (1983-87)

“This is the most frightening epidemic I’ve seen probably since the methamphetamine epidemic in the beginning of the early ‘90s. All the professional sports that involve physical combat create guys who need pain treatment.” — Dr. Alex Stalcup, Medical Director of New Leaf Treatment Center in Lafayette, Calif. Stalcup says he’s treated two dozen current or former NFL players for prescription painkiller abuse

“Never, ever would I have thought one of these days I (would) be taking over 100 pills a day and spending over $1,000 a week on painkillers. I think if I would have given it another two or three months it probably would have killed me.” — Sam Rayburn, Eagles defensive tackle (2003-06), who says he used prescription painkillers to mask his NFL injuries, developing an addiction ultimately leading to a conviction on two counts of attempting to obtain a controlled substance.

Study Results on ESPN.com

ESPN.com on Friday will publish stories exploring painkiller use in the NFL today, and the possible link between concussions and addiction as evidence mounts that head injuries could affect players’ impulse control, which some experts cite as a possible reason players struggle with painkiller use.

“I know guys that have bought thousands of pills… Tons of guys would take Vicodin before a game.” — Kyle Turley, an offensive lineman for the Saints, Rams and Chiefs (1999-2007)

Game 1:  Miami Heat (88) @ New York Knicks (93)

Announcers: Marv Albert, Steve Kerr, Reggie Miller with Craig Sager reporting

TNT’s Craig Sager interviewed Heat forward LeBron James and guard Dwyane Wade prior to the game.

James on being selected as an NBA All-Star starter: “It’s very humbling. All-Star Weekend is an opportunity for fans to see the best players on a team get together and go against some of the best players in the West. It’s great for myself and Dwyane Wade to represent the Heat.”

Wade on his hope that his teammate Chris Bosh will join him and James for the All-Star Game: “We’re all really excited because it’s an honor to be picked as one of the best players in this great game that we play in the NBA. To go with your teammate is something that everyone dreams of. We hope we’ll be able to go with our other teammate as well and go as a threesome. It would be awesome.”

Miller on Knicks guard Danilo Gallinari complementing forward Amar’e Stoudemire: “I think (Danilo Gallinari) a great complement to Amar’e (Stoudemire), not only because of his size but being able to stretch the floor because of his outside shooting. He’s an improving defender, he’s getting better at rebounding the basketball. I think he complements Amar’e so well.”

Miller on the league preventing Heat guard Dwyane Wade from wearing shaded glasses that hide his eyes: “Are you kidding me? Seriously? A competitive edge because a competitor can’t see his eyes? If he wore a blindfold they still wouldn’t be able to guard Dwyane Wade.”

TNT’s Craig Sager interviewed CNN’s Piers Morgan during the game.

Morgan on the first quarter of the game: “It’s more exciting than the last game. The last game it was like Hurricane LeBron, he just destroyed the Knicks on his own, virtually. So tonight they are controlling him much better, it’s much tighter, the Knicks are playing better. I have a very good feeling.”

Morgan on his experience hosting Piers Morgan Tonight on CNN: “It’s a completely different experience for me. I was in the British newspaper game a long time, the cable competition is about as ferocious as anything I’ve ever seen in my life. Good fun, very competitive. Howard Stern, my second guest, is actually two seats in front of me so maybe we’ll do round two.”

Morgan on the NBA player he’d most like to interview: “I’ve got to be honest, when I watch LeBron James play the way that he does, to me, he’s the most charismatic figure in basketball in the world. I think he’s a fascinating athlete and human being. I’d love to sit down with him pretty soon.”

Knicks forward Amar’e Stoudemire on the Knicks’ slow start to the season: “We started off a little bit slow, we had so many new players and we didn’t quite have a strategy down offensively and defensively of what we wanted to accomplish. We lost a few games in a row so the great thing we did was we were able to sit down and look ourselves in the mirror and figure out what type of team we want to become. We want to make this a special year.”

Kerr on the improvement of the Knicks due to three new additions: “You can feel that there’s a sense of real improvement. This is not fake, this is a team that is pretty good. They’re not great, but they are pretty good. They have a confidence that they’ve not had in years. The key for (coach) Mike D’Antoni is the three additions in (Amar’e) Stoudemire, Landry Fields and Raymond Felton. Those guys have just turned this team into a very viable threat for everybody every night.”

TNT’s Craig Sager interviewed Heat guard Dwyane Wade at halftime.

Wade on how effective his glasses are in helping his eyesight: “I feel pretty good. With the light here and with the shade and the color of them (my glasses) I’ve able to see pretty good. It’s not perfect, my periphery vision is not as good as I want it to be, but I’m out here playing and just trying to help my team win.”

Halftime

Winer, McHale and Webber

Barkley on Knicks guard Landry Fields being the best rookie in his first year in the NBA: “Blake Griffin is going to win the Rookie of the Year because he’s the best rookie. I don’t think he’s a rookie, but I know you have to go by the rules. I think you have an advantage sitting out a year and getting bigger, stronger and learning the rules of the game. When you are sitting on the bench as a player you are getting better. The best rookie of the NBA this year for a first year player is Landry Fields. I do (like him over John Wall).”

Smith: “The best natural rookie in the NBA this year has been Landry Fields.”

****    ****    ****    ****

Kerr on Knicks forward Amar’e Stoudemire embracing his role as the leader of the Knicks: “I think what’s been most impressive about Amar’s is the way he’s embraced New York and embraced being the star here. He’s really fearless, he’s got a very young group of teammates who look up to him. He’s become the undisputed leader of this club.”

Miller on the Knicks being distracted by Heat guard Dwyane Wade and forward LeBron James: “Whenever the ball is in the hands of (Dwyane) Wade or LeBron (James) you just feel like the Knicks are mesmerized.”

Kerr on Knicks forward Shawne Williams effectively defending against Heat forward LeBron James: “I’m amazed at the defensive effort that he’s giving on LeBron James. He’s been able to use that strength and that quickness to stay in front of James. What a story. Basically, an afterthought in trading camp, Mike D’Antoni told us, ‘we didn’t think he could make the team.’ He’s leading the NBA in three-point shooting and defensively guarding the greatest player on earth and doing a pretty good job!”

Miller on Heat forward LeBron James being coached to play more like Shaquille O’Neal: “(Heat) assistant coach David Fizdale (told LeBron James), ‘we’re going to work on our post moves. I don’t want you to think about being Kobe Bryant or Michael Jordan and worrying about footwork and making quick moves. I want you to be more like Shaq (O’Neal), be patient but be powerful down there.’ That’s why we’re seeing maybe a little bit of the stagnant holding the basketball, trying to back his guy down, very much the way Shaq was.”

TNT’s Craig Sager interviewed Knicks forward Amar’e Stoudemire after the Knicks defeated the Heat.

Stoudemire on getting the win over the Miami Heat: “It was great. We came out and played great tonight. We knew how important this game was. We have a tough two games ahead of us, we’re here against Miami and then in Atlanta tomorrow. So we got this one.”

Stoudemire on why the win was important for the Knicks: “To build our confidence. We understand we are a young team and we know how good we could be, so we have to keep working and work though the kinks and continue to improve.”

****    ****    ****    ****

Game 2:  Boston Celtics (88) @ Portland Trail Blazers (78)

Announcers: Kevin Harlan and Mike Fratello with David Aldridge reporting

Fratello on Trail Blazers guard Andre Miller: “(Andre) Miller is one of the best post-up point guards you have in the NBA today. He is smart, he has strength he has great ball fakes to get the guy up in the air. They will try to put fouls on (Rajon) Rondo by posting Miller.”

Fratello on the physical play of the Portland Trail Blazers to start the game: “Portland came out of the locker room ready and understanding that you have to be physical and answer the challenge against the Celtics if you don’t want to fall behind early in the game.”

Fratello on Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge needing to step up as the leader of the Trail Blazers in place of the injured Brandon Roy: “A lot of concerns about Brandon Roy. He was the leader of this team, he was the spiritual leader, he was the All-Star. Really, (LaMarcus) Aldridge was willing to stay a step behind Brandon Roy, he let Brandon lead. Brandon Roy is now a question mark. Will he be back this season, will he be back at all? What’s his future hold? What kind of player will he be when he does come back? Will he ever be able to obtain that All-Star level? This is Aldridge’s time to step up and take over for Brandon Roy.”

****    ****    ****    ****

Halftime

Winer, McHale and Webber

Webber on the extra defensive effort made by the Boston Celtics: “I love the defense for (the Celtics) because they make multiple efforts. I did a game with Reggie Miller, the Kings/Nuggets, and we noticed that a lot of teams weren’t making the extra effort. The way the Celtics play, not only do they make the extra effort, they make it from the first play of the game. They are going to play defense in the fourth quarter the same way they started and that’s not really the way most teams play defense.”

McHale: “Bad teams make one or two efforts, good teams make three efforts and great teams make four, five and six efforts like the Celtics do every possession.”

****    ****    ****    ****

Fratello on both the Celtics and Trail Blazers refusing to use injuries as excuses: “They have gotten the message across to the staff, the leadership, the players, whoever it might be, that you move on in this league. You can’t sit around and complain, the season goes on. Injuries happen to everyone, it’s how you handle the injuries that is important. That all starts with the mental approach.”

Fratello on the leadership of Celtics forward Kevin Garnett enabling coach Doc Rivers to coach the team effectively: “(The Celtics) could be a very difficult team to coach. However, when you have a guy like Kevin Garnett, he enables a coach like Doc (Rivers) to do the things he believes in and get them done. Kevin Garnett, that’s the main guy. That guy leads this team, leads them in practice every day, leads them in meetings, leads them on the court. As (Trail Blazers coach) Nate McMillan said, he’s the best defensive quarterback in the league, telling them where to go and what to do. If someone doesn’t want to do it, Kevin Garnett reminds them, ‘No, this is how we do it here, we’re good this way. We do it our own way.’”

TNT’s David Aldridge interviewed Celtics guard Ray Allen after the Celtics defeated the Trail Blazers.

Allen on teams trying to challenge the Celtics’ physical style of play: “Teams that try to combat our physicality on the floor, as a team we just can’t back down. You get two early fouls and you tend to get a little softer. That’s what we’ve seen from a lot of teams. Definitely on the road you’ve got to keep that aggressive nature out there and I thought we did that.”

****    ****    ****    ****

Inside the NBA presented by Hyundai

Winer, McHale and Webber

Celtics on the Celtics grinding style of play: “I call them the Boston ‘Sausage Grinders’ because they get you in the sausage maker and grind you up. By the end of the game, you feel like they beat you to death.  They grind you down every single night.”

Webber on the Celtics’ intensity: “I played against some great, championship teams and I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a team, during my playing years, with the intensity of the Boston Celtics.”

TNT’s Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith joined the show from Madison Square Garden

Barkley on the Heat needing a go-to player at the end of games: “(The Heat) have to figure out who their go-to guy is.  I think it should be LeBron (James) because he’s the best player in the NBA.  But I don’t think it’s as easy as (everyone) thinks it is.  It is Dwyane Wade’s city and it is his team.  I think Coach (Erik) Spoelstra is stuck sometimes.”

Smith on Knicks guard Danilo Gallinari: “(Gallinari is) able to mix his game up.  When he first came into the league, all we heard about him was that he was a three-point shooter.  He’s more than a three-point shooter.  He puts the basketball on the floor.  He does a lot, like what Hedo Turkoglu does in Orlando, but he’s a little bit more athletic and a better finisher.  If he can do that on a more consistent basis, he’ll be a better player.”

Webber on Dallas Mavericks reserve guard Jason Terry: “(Terry is) the heart and soul of his team.  He plays tough and he’s a big part of why they are still really good.”

Webber on the impact Tyson Chandler has had on the Mavericks: “(Chandler) knows that he’s not an All-Star but he is just as important to Dallas as a lot of All-Stars are to their team.  His team is one of the best in the NBA so you have to give him a lot of credit for changing the defensive mentality, along with the coach (Rick Carlisle) and Dirk (Nowitzki), in Dallas.”

McHale on why Minnesota Timberwolves center Kevin Love should make the All-Star team: “(Love) should be on the All-Star team. He’s putting up numbers that we haven’t seen since Moses Malone did it.  (The Timberwolves) are in games and are keeping them close because of what he’s doing.  They aren’t losing because of Kevin Love.”

Showtime & CBS Join Top Rank for Pacquiao vs. Mosely Pay Per View

January 28, 2011 By admin

Showtime and CBS Join Top Rank, Inc. To Promote, Produce And Distribute Marquee Boxing Event:

MANNY PACQUIAO vs. SHANE MOSLEY

Saturday, May 7, 2011

From MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas

Live on SHOWTIME PPV®

NEW YORK (Jan. 26, 2011)—Showtime Networks Inc. and CBS have joined forces with Top Rank, Inc. to promote, produce and distribute the biggest boxing event of the year—the May 7th showdown between global superstar and Philippine Congressman Manny Pacquiao and three-division world champion “Sugar” Shane Mosley, it was jointly announced by Ken Hershman, Executive Vice President and General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports®, and Bob Arum, Top Rank CEO.

The agreement brings together Pacquiao, the top athlete and personality in the sport, with SHOWTIME, the fastest growing premium television network in the U.S., and its parent company CBS Corporation whose programming and media assets span network and local television, pay and basic cable, radio, outdoor and online.

The campaign will include the SHOWTIME Sports documentary series FIGHT CAMP 360° in preview of Pacquiao vs. Mosley. The top rated CBS Television Network will participate by broadcasting a primetime special of the show in April.

“The arrangement with CBS and Showtime regarding the promotion and distribution of the Pacquiao vs. Mosley championship event represents a new opportunity for the sport of boxing. It enables boxing to reach millions more people in the United States given the reach of CBS, the most watched television network in the country. This development will not only benefit Manny Pacquiao and Shane Mosley but all of the young men participating in the sport of boxing,” said Arum.

Hershman said, “We look forward to combining Showtime Sports’ production and distribution expertise with Top Rank’s promotional power and the amazing programming and marketing resources available to us across CBS to present the biggest boxing event of 2011.”

On May 7, Pacquiao will fight under the SHOWTIME PPV banner for the first time, bringing it the highest profile and biggest revenue generating athlete in boxing whose fights over the past two years have garnered nearly 4 million pay per view buys and unrivaled box office receipts. The event marks the first SHOWTIME PPV event since 2005’s Diego Corrales vs. Jose Luis Castillo II.

“Pay per view has been an opportunistic play for SHOWTIME Sports in recent years,” Hershman continued. “In Pacquiao, we have a global celebrity and unquestionably the most popular boxer of this era attempting to continue his dominance in the ring against Shane Mosley, one of the most talented and recognizable fighters of today not named Manny Pacquiao.  With this marquee match up, Pacquiao’s proven track record in pay per view and CBS’s participation, this is the perfect opportunity for Showtime to be back in the pay per view business and in a big way.”

Showtime has a long history of success in pay per view dating back to the 1990s. In 1997, the SHOWTIME PPV presentation of Mike Tyson vs. Evander Holyfield II garnered the most pay per view buys for any sport or entertainment event in history. The 1.99 million buys stood as the industry benchmark for nearly 10 years, until being surpassed in May 2007.

Additional details about the May 7th event, including ticket information for the MGM Grand Garden Arena and undercard fights are to be announced.

Pacquiao Biography

Manny Pacquiao (52-3-2, 38 KOs), of General Santos City, Philippines, is the first Congressman in history to both fight for and defend a world boxing title.  Congressman Pacquiao was sworn in on June 28, 2010 and is the lone representative of the Sarangani province. Pacquiao won the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) super welterweight championship—his record eighth world title in as many weight divisions—last November via dominant unanimous decision over  three-time welterweight champion Antonio Margarito. Pacquiao captured the World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title, which he will be defending against Mosley, in November 2009 with a brilliant 12th-round knockout of four-time world champion Miguel Cotto. The Boxing Writers Association of America’s “Fighter of the Decade,” Pacquiao’s resume features victories over future Hall of Famers Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Marco Antonio Barrera, Erik Morales, Juan Manuel Marquez and Cotto. His knockout victories over Cotto and Hatton in 2009 and his decisive wins over Joshua Clottey and Margarito in 2010 combined for nearly 4 million buys making Pacquiao the reigning pay per view king.  No boxer sold more live tickets than Pacquiao in 2010, making him the pound for pound king in the ring and at the box office.

Mosley Biography

Sugar Shane Mosley (46-6-1, 39 KOs), from Pomona, Calif., has reigned as world champion four times in three different weight divisions during his remarkable 18-year professional career.  The only man to serve up two defeats to Oscar De La Hoya — both in world championship fights — Mosley’s Hall of Fame caliber resume also boasts victories over world champions Fernando Vargas (twice), Ricardo Mayorga, Antonio Margarito, John John Molina, Jesse James Leija, Philip Holiday and Luis Collazo.  De la Hoya, Holiday and Collazo were the only Mosley victims to survive the 12-round distance to hear the judges’ decisions.
