“No doubt, the best player in the world.” – NBC Sports’ Eddie Olczyk on Sidney Crosby

SIDNEY CROSBY & DEFENDING STANLEY CUP CHAMPION PENGUINS HOST CANADIANS SUNDAY ON NBC SPORTS; BRUINS HOSTS FLYERS ON SATURDAY

“No doubt, the best player in the world.” – NBC Sports’ Eddie Olczyk on Sidney Crosby

NEW YORK – April 29, 2010 – Sidney Crosby leads the defending Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh Penguins against the Montreal Canadians at Mellon Arena in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals on NBC Sports this Sunday at 2 p.m. ET. NBC Sports’ third weekend of NHL playoff coverage begins Saturday with another Eastern Conference Semi-Final matchup at 12:30 p.m. ET when the Boston Bruins host the Philadelphia Flyers at TD Garden in Game 1 of their series.

Mike “Doc” Emrick (play-by-play), Eddie Olczyk (analyst) and Pierre McGuire (inside-the-glass reporter) call the action for both games. McGuire will pull double duty, hosting NBC’s studio show alongside analyst Mike Milbury.

Fourth-seeded Pittsburgh won its Quarter-Final series, 4-2, over the fifth-seeded Ottawa Senators. Crosby led all players in the first round of the playoffs with 14 points and nine assists, along with five goals. Pittsburgh is 2-1 on NBC this season with all three games being decided by one goal; two needing overtime and one a shootout. Eight-seeded Montreal knocked off top-seeded Washington in seven games. This is the Canadians first appearance on NBC this season.

OLCZYK: “Montreal has a lot of confidence coming off the Washington series. Their goalie is playing well. You could argue that Pittsburgh’s offense is similar to Washington and we know what just happened. But the Penguins have a lot of players with proven playoff experience and, no doubt, the best player in the world. It should be an entertaining series.”

Sixth-seeded Boston defeated third-seeded Buffalo, 4-2, in its Quarter-Final series, while seventh-seeded Philadelphia disposed of second-seeded New Jersey in five games. The two teams kicked off NBC’s 2010 NHL coverage by meeting in the 2010 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic at Fenway Park on January 1. The Bruins needed overtime to defeat the Flyers, 2-1. Boston is a perfect 4-0 on NBC this season, including a 5-3 win over Buffalo in the Quarter-Finals on April 17. The Flyers are 1-2 on NBC in 2010, losing two one-goal games and defeating Washington on the last day of the regular season, 4-3, in a shootout.

OLCZYK: “This series just goes to show that the Winter Classic is a breeding ground for playoff success. The first two winners advanced to the Stanley Cup and one of these teams will advance to at least the conference final. Boston is so strong defensively and in goal. Getting Marc Savard back is a big boost. The Flyers will play big and fast, up tempo. They have the edge in depth.”

FIRST-ROUND VIEWERSHIP: Viewership for NBC Sports’ four 2010 Quarter-Final broadcasts (1.72 million viewers) was up 18 percent compared to 2009 (1.46 million), and the most since 2006. The household rating of a 1.1 for the four games is also the best since 2006. Last Sunday’s Phoenix-Detroit game (1.1) was up 57 percent vs. last year’s Washington-New York Rangers game (0.7). Last Saturday’s Nashville-Chicago game registered a 1.0 rating, which was even with last year’s Pittsburgh-Philadelphia game.

NBCSPORTS.COM: NBCSports.com’s “Star-cam” continues in the playoffs. “Star-cam” tracks a player(s) from both teams throughout each of their shifts. Following the game, NBCSports.com will present bonus material, including “Star-cam” and “Net-cam” and bonus analysis from NBC Sports commentators.

DON’T LIKE THE NL EAST STANDINGS? WAIT FIVE MINUTES, THEY’LL CHANGE – Just last week, the 2010 Mets seemed hopelessly doomed for another disappointing season. Now after ripping off seven straight wins, ‘The Amazins’ are sitting atop the NL East looking ahead to a critical series against their division rival and defending NL champion Philadelphia Phillies. MLB on FOX lead analyst Tim McCarver calls Saturday’s contest and talks about the Mets impressive turnaround. “Getting Jose Reyes back as soon as they did was very important from a physiological stand point because he is a real catalyst to their offense. Mike Pelfrey has just been sensational and Johan Santana has just been his elegant, talented self and has pitched very well. Ike Davis appears to be a young man with his head on right but you’re not going to be able to replace a whole team so the guys that are struggling have to get straightened out to be successful. Even with his troubles, you can see how much teams respect David Wright and what he can do defensively and offensively when things are right. Jerry Manuel deserves a lot of credit for getting this team back on track. New York was just waiting to lower the boom when the season started and he’s been able to right the ship for now.”

LOCAL BROADCASTING LEGENDS TAKE OVER THE MLB ON FOX GAME OF THE WEEK IN THE EMERALD CITY THIS SATURDAY – During this weekend’s Rangers/Mariners game featured on the FOX SATURDAY BASEBALL GAME OF THE WEEK some local legends who combined for nearly 65 years of baseball broadcasting experience take over center stage. Mariners’ radio play-by-play announcer Dave Niehaus calls the bottom of the 4th inning and Rangers baseball voice Eric Nadel is behind the mike for the top of the 5th inning. Each legendary broadcaster will have the game turned over during that half inning to their respective radio broadcasts. Niehaus has called Mariners games since the clubs’ inception in 1977 and is inducted in the broadcaster’s wing of the National Baseball Hall of Fame.  Nadel was hired by the Rangers in 1979 and was behind the mike for Nolan Ryan’s 5000th career strikeout and the Rangers’ major league record 30-run outburst in August 2007. He is a member of the Texas Baseball Hall of Fame.

NASCAR ON FOX IS READY FOR PRIMETIME IN RICHMOND – On Saturday, May 1, FOX Sports presents NASCAR Sprint Cup Racing from Richmond. Following last week’s fireworks, the brewing rivalry between Hendrick Motorsports drivers; Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson may be ignited again, this time under the lights of Richmond International Raceway. In contrast to the noise coming from Hendrick, Kevin Harvick quietly captured his first victory of 2010 and vault to second in the Sprint Cup points standings. Coverage starts with FOX NASCAR SATURDAY host Chris Myers, along with analysts Waltrip and Jeff Hammond from the Hollywood Hotel, FOX Sports’ traveling prerace set providing live interviews with drivers, crewmen and officials shaping the day’s action. Once the green flag drops, race announcer Mike Joy will be alongside analysts Waltrip and Larry McReynolds to call all the twists and turns on the track while Dick Berggren, Steve Byrnes, Krista Voda and Matt Yocum patrol the pits for up-to-the-second news and notes.

LARRY MCREYNOLDS: WHEN MR. H. SPEAKS, PEOPLE LISTEN – After this season’s most exciting race on the circuit’s fastest track, two of the sport’s most decorated drivers again bumped heads as Jimmie Johnson cut off Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jeff Gordon sparking a pile up that ended Gordon’s day.  In his postrace interview with FOX Sports Pit Reporter, Dick Berggren, Gordon lashed out at Johnson prompting this reaction from NASCAR on FOX analyst Larry McReynolds on FOXSports.com:  “The forgotten man in this equation, is perhaps the most important — team owner Rick Hendrick…when Mr. H speaks, people listen — and you can bet those two boys will listen and listen good.”  Gordon’s frustration according to McReynolds is warranted and the former crew chief went on to opine that there could be a little jealousy involved in this feud.  “The last contributing factor is the success the No. 48 team has had over the last couple of years and that could be taking a toll on the No. 24 team.  Gordon has not won a championship since Johnson, Chad Knaus and the No. 48 team came on the scene full time in 2002,” said McReynolds.

ESPN’s Carol Stiff Promoted to Vice President, Programming

Carol Stiff has been promoted from senior director to vice president, programming & acquisitions, in ESPN’s programming department. Stiff joined ESPN in 1990.

Stiff’s responsibilities include the programming acquisition and scheduling for a variety of sports on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU, including women’s NCAA basketball, NCAA championships (the NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship, Frozen Four, College World Series and Women’s College World Series), WNBA, professional softball and more.

“Carol is a passionate and creative champion for women’s sports in general and women’s basketball in particular,” said Burke Magnus, senior vice president, college sports programming, ESPN. “We are fortunate to have her leading ESPN’s efforts in these areas.”

As a member of ESPN’s employee committee in support of The V Foundation for Cancer Research, Stiff has been a passionate leader on behalf of ESPN’s efforts to benefit The Foundation. She was instrumental in the development of Jimmy V Week and in raising awareness for the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund in partnership with The V Foundation.

Stiff has been a vital contributor to The Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund via the programming initiative “February Frenzy” on ESPN networks, among other efforts. February Frenzy makes for two of the biggest days of basketball in the women’s college basketball season on ESPN while helping to raise money for and promote awareness of women’s cancer research.

Stiff began her career with ESPN as a program planner in 1990. She received a promotion in 1997 to program planner II, and, in 2000, to senior program planner. Before joining ESPN, she gained experience in the college coaching profession.

In 1988-89, Stiff was the first assistant women’s basketball coach and recruiter at Brown University after serving as head women’s basketball coach and physical education instructor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., from 1985-88. Stiff began her coaching career at Western Connecticut State University, where she served as head field hockey coach and assistant women’s basketball coach (1983-85). She also worked as a part-time elementary school physical education teacher.

Stiff was inducted into the Connecticut Basketball Hall of Fame in April 2005; was named the Top Advocate for Women’s Basketball by the Tampa Tribune in 2008; and in 2009, Sports Business Journal recognized her as one of the most influential executives leading the way in women’s sports.

Stiff graduated from Southern Connecticut State University in 1983 with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education. While in school, she competed in both basketball and field hockey. In 1989, Stiff received her master’s degree in human performance/physical education from SCSU. She is a native of Bernardsville, N.J.
