QUOTE OF THE DAY

TNT’s Charles Barkley on Charlotte Bobcats forward Gerald Wallace.

CLIPS OF THE DAY

TNT NBA studio analysts discuss NBA All-Star Western Conference reserves.

Barkley plays a prank on All-Star reserve Kevin Durant.

****    ****    ****    ****

TNT NBA Tip-off presented by AutoTrader.com

Ernie Johnson, Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith and Chris Webber

Eastern Conference All-Star Reserves

Rajon Rondo – Boston Celtics

Joe Johnson – Atlanta Hawks

Chris Bosh – Toronto Raptors

Paul Pierce – Boston Celtics

Gerald Wallace – Charlotte Bobcats

Derrick Rose – Chicago Bulls

Al Horford – Atlanta Hawks

Barkley on Boston Celtics guard Rajon Rondo: “Well deserved.  He’s been the best player on the Celtics all season.”

Barkley on Charlotte Bobcats forward Gerald Wallace: “I’m happy for him.  It’s well-deserved.  Long line of guys from Alabama who are just studs.”

Atlanta Hawks center and Eastern Conference All-Star Al Horford joined the TNT crew in the studio

Horford on being selected for the All-Star team by NBA coaches: “It means a lot.  It’s really a great honor.  When you think about all the great players that had an opportunity (to become an All-Star) and have been playing this year.  We have a lot of talent in the East (Conference).  For (the coaches) to consider me to be an All-Star player is a great honor.  I’m so excited.”

Horford on the success that the Hawks are enjoying this season: “We have a really great team.  Josh (Smith) has really been doing so much for our team all year long.  He’s playing as (well) as anyone.  Jamal (Crawford) coming off the bench has been such an impact for us.  The reason we’ve been playing so well this season has a lot to do with (Crawford).”

Horford on Hawks head coach Mike Woodson’s shaved eyebrows: “I don’t know what he’s doing.  I think his barber was (trimming) one (eyebrow) and accidently cut one so he had to clean it all out.”

Smith on Mike Woodson’s shaved eyebrows: “I don’t know if he’s frowning, if he’s sad, happy or mean.”

Barkley: “We do know one thing…he’s ugly.”

Western Conference All-Star Reserves

Dirk Nowitzki – Dallas Mavericks

Kevin Durant – Oklahoma City Thunder

Brandon Roy – Portland Trail Blazers

Chris Paul – New Orleans Hornets

Deron Williams – Utah Jazz

Pau Gasol – Los Angeles Lakers

Zach Randolph – Memphis Grizzlies

Barkley on Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant: “Kevin Durant can score on anybody.”

Webber on Memphis Grizzlies center Zach Randolph: “He’s passing the ball more now and he’s actually being a good teammate.  He’s being rewarded for that.”

Barkley on Rockets guard Aaron Brooks and Clipper center Chris Kaman not making the All-Star Team: “Aaron Brooks should have made it and Chris Kaman is the best center in the West (Conference).  Amar’e Stoudemire is starting at center, but he’s really not a center.  We always reward teams for winning and we did not (do that) in this situation.”

Barkley on New York Knicks center David Lee not making the All-Star team: “David Lee should have made (the All-Star team).  If they would’ve taken David Lee over anybody else, there wouldn’t have been any gripes.  (Lee) has been ballin’ and he’s on a terrible team.  He gets a double-double every night.”

Barkley on Chicago Bulls forward Joakim Noah: “No disrespect to Derrick Rose but the most consistent player (on the Bulls) all year has been Joakim Noah.”

Smith: “I disagree.  Derrick Rose is the engine that makes that team go.  Without him, they aren’t even a playoff contender.”

Oklahoma City Thunder guard and Western Conference All-Star Kevin Durant joined the studio crew via phone

Durant on what has improved most with his game since last season: “I’m playing defense better.  I’m able to pass the ball better than I did last year.  I’ve been more of a leader and the guys look up to me.  If I come in every day and work hard, they are going to follow (my lead).  I’m excited to be (at the All-Star Game) and learn from these guys.”

TNT’s Craig Sager interviewed Eastern Conference All-Star and Celtics guard Rajon Rondo

Rondo on his improvement as a player: “It’s the hard work.  The coaches have been on me since day one and I give them a lot of credit.  Also, my teammates every day in practice; they are on me and they push me.  (They) show me how to be consistent and a leader on the court.”

Smith on the suspensions to Wizards players Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton: “It was expected.  The only time that you’re supposed to bring a gun to the workplace is if you’re a police officer or a crook, otherwise you’re supposed to keep it at home.  It’s unfortunate but the one thing that’s fortunate about it is now he can move on.  I think now Gilbert has to move on and (Javaris) Crittenton has to move on, realize their mistake and suffer the consequences.  Then come back next year with a vengeance as a player.  Not as an entertainer, not as a blogger, not as a gun-totter but as a basketball player.”

Game 1:  Boston Celtics (94) @ Orlando Magic (96)

Announcer: Marv Albert, Reggie Miller with Craig Sager reporting

Miller on the Celtics trusting center Kendrick Perkins more on the offensive end of the court: “I love the trust factor that (Celtics head coach) Doc Rivers and the rest of the Celtics have for Kendrick Perkins.  He used to be the (defensive) workhorse of the team.  (He) rebounds, blocks shots and sets picks.  Now they are going to him offensively and that’s the trust factor that this team has in him.”

Miller on Celtics forward Rasheed Wallace: “That’s what I like about Rasheed (Wallace’s) game.  He won’t settle for three’s and the mid-range game as well as the post-up.  He can be a dangerous player.”

Miller on the defensive play of Magic guard J.J. Redick: “I’m really surprised by how good of a defender J.J. Redick is.  He’s not great but he really moves his feet and uses his body.  He’s worked out for (head coach Stan) Van Gundy.”

Miller on Celtics forward Kevin Garnett: “It’s no secret, when Kevin Garnett is on the floor and in uniform for the Celtics. He gives them a much different look defensively.”

Magic guard Vince Carter on why he hasn’t returned to the Sprite Slam Dunk: “If I were to do it again at that point in time, I want to be healthy and 100%.  I had a few injuries but for what I want to do and try in the dunk contest, I wouldn’t be able to do it.”

TNT’s Craig Sager interviewed Celtics guard Ray Allen following the second quarter

Allen on how he fits into the Celtics’ offense: “I think a lot of the time; our own worst enemy is ourselves if we don’t move the ball from the strong side to the weak side.  Most teams we play, they double me off of pick-and-rolls and I have to move the ball and get the quick pass.  As long as that keeps working, I’ll get my spots where I can get my shot working.”

****    ****    ****    ****

Halftime

Johnson, Barkley, Smith and Webber

Smith on Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo: “(Rajon Rondo is) the little big man.  Most guards like to play outside-in.  Rajon Rondo likes to play inside-out.  He gives (the Celtics) another post player.”

Webber on where Orlando fits into the race in the Eastern Conference: “I don’t think (Orlando) is in the two team race (in the Eastern Conference with Boston).  Cleveland is ahead of them because they don’t get the ball inside.”

Barkley on why Orlando is one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference: “I still think Orlando is going to be a team to be reckoned with in the Eastern Conference.  They only have to beat Cleveland and Boston because they’ve got the best bench (in the East) and they’ve got the most dominant big man in Dwight Howard.  They are going to be there at the end.”

amazing weekend party-wise.

****    ****    ****    ****

Miller on how to attack the Celtics defense: “You can’t keep the ball on one side against the Celtics.  Their defense is that good.  You have to move the ball from side to side against their defense and then take the ball off the dribble to be successful.”

Celtics guard Ray Allen on his role changing throughout his career: “I’ve been on teams where I’ve had to do a lot more on the floor and some teams where I had to do a lot more off the floor.  It just takes each individual player on any team in any sport to figure out what that coach or that player needs from you.  If you can make that coach look good or your teammates look great then you’re doing your job.”

Miller on how the Celtics defend Dwight Howard: “The reason why (Celtics center) Kendrick Perkins is so successful at pushing (Dwight Howard) around is that it allows the Celtics to play one-on-one defense on Dwight Howard.  They don’t have to double (team) him and when they don’t double-team him, you’re not unleashing all of those three-point threats.”

****    ****    ****    ****

Game 2:  Dallas Mavericks (106) @ Phoenix Suns (112)

Announcers: Kevin Harlan and Doug Collins with Cheryl Miller reporting

Collins on the rising confidence of Suns reserve guard Goran Dragic: “Confidence is an amazing thing.  (Goran) Dragic is playing with great confidence.  His defense on the ball is very, very good.  He pressures the ball and gives them a chance to defend at the point of the ball much better.”

Suns point guard Steve Nash on his team losing confidence: “I think for little stretches that’s crept into our game.  We’ve got to get our swagger back, not think and just play.  (That’s when) good things will happen.  As much as anything, it’s a mentality.  In sports, you’ve got to have that mentality that you’re good and you’re going to win.”

Collins on Suns’ starting center Robin Lopez: “Robin Lopez has played very aggressive basketball and his numbers are up.  He makes them a different team and provides a physical presence.”

TNT’s Cheryl Miller interviewed Mavericks guard Jason Terry following the second quarter

Terry on how the Mavericks should be able to score against the Suns: “I thought we did a great job of getting stops and getting our hands on some balls.  We’re not getting the job done offensively.  We (have) to score on these guys.  They’re not very good defensively and we’ve got to make them pay.”

****    ****    ****    ****

Halftime

Johnson, Barkley, Smith and Webber

Webber on Mavericks reserve guard Jason Terry: “I look at Jason Terry as a starter anyway.  He’s the commander off the bench.  Jason Kidd is the facilitator for this team and they need more scoring besides Dirk (Nowitzki) so it does make sense to put him in the starting lineup.”

Smith on the questions surrounding Suns center Amar’e Stoudemire: “The future of Amar’e Stoudemire is very interesting.  The one thing that’s going to separate him (from other players) and the biggest question mark (with him) is if he is a franchise player?  Can he dominate the low post without a pick-and-roll?”

****    ****    ****    ****

Collins on why the Mavericks have struggled at home this season: “Sometimes guys get home and they get complacent.  They expect the crowd to energize them but they’ve got to bring their own energy.”

Collins compares Suns point guard Steve Nash to Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre: “(Steve Nash) will take chances with the ball.  Just like Brett Favre slinging that ball in the NFC Championship.”

Collins on Mavericks forward Shawn Marion: “Shawn (Marion) is a slasher and a cutter and a guy who will get on the boards but not really a guy that you’re going to post (up).”

TNT’s Cheryl Miller interviewed Suns point guard Steve Nash following the game

Nash on the Suns winning on TNT for the first time in 19 games: “I’m not going to say anything derogatory about the network.  We hung in there.  We played pretty well but we scrapped.  We came up with some loose balls.  (We made) some defensive plays that we’ve been missing in crucial situations lately.  It was a big game for us.”

Nash on the importance of the Suns’ bench in their victory over the Mavericks: “The second unit was huge.  Goran (Dragic) has been playing great lately and the energy of the rest of the guys was fantastic.  They scrambled and talked on defense and held the momentum for us.”

****    ****    ****    ****

Inside the NBA presented by Hyundai

Johnson, Barkley, Smith and Webber

Barkley on a camera shot of Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell: “That’s my boy JaMarcus Russell. We need to get him on a diet because he’s going to be the quarterback for the Oakland Raiders next year. We’ve got to get about 30 pounds off him and then he’ll be ok.”

Barkley on the best shooters he’s ever seen: “Reggie Miller is the best shooter I’ve ever seen and Ray Allen is in the passenger seat. Steve Kerr is in the back.”

Barkley on Magic center Dwight Howard and Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki needing to play more aggressively against their defenders: “Let me say this about Dwight Howard and Dirk Nowitzki – it drives me nuts – why they wrestle with guys trying to post up. Listen, in my day I told the defender, ‘you get where you want to, and then when you get there, you’re stuck there for the rest of the night.’  When they’re pushing you off the box and things like that, that’s absurd, no guy can push you off the box. You get where you want to and he’s going to front you or play behind you. Now once he gets in one of those positions you lock him up and you say, ‘throw the ball, this guy can’t come and get it.’ You sit there and watch Dwight Howard get pushed off the box because he doesn’t use his legs, it’s all about legs. You see the same thing with Dirk Nowitzki, he let Grant Hill push him off the box. I’m like, dude, that is so stupid, that is Basketball 101. You get to your position and you stay there. I’m going to lock your ass there.”

Webber: “I agree totally, they are so good on the post that all you have to do is hold your position just like you said. All the flopping and flailing and moving, you’re just fighting and wasting time. (Those players) need to watch tape of you and Karl Malone and other guys and just put your butt in it. Not everybody has a butt as big as ya’ll though.”

Webber on a new nickname for Thunder forward Kevin Durant: “Chuck, Steve Smith gave (Kevin Durant) this nickname and I want to know if you like it. ‘Baby Ice.’ Like the Ice Man, ‘Baby Ice.’”

“He can score anywhere, he’ll score at a funeral.”

A 100-yd TD return by Steelers LB James Harrison gave the Steelers momentum at the close of the first half, but a six-yard touchdown catch by WR Santonio Holmes with 35 seconds left on the clock sealed the 27-23 win over Arizona for Pittsburgh’s record-setting sixth Super Bowl victory

Conference Call Recap: Monday Night Football Team Discusses 2010 Pro Bowl and Super Bowl XLIV

ESPN hosted a media conference call Wednesday to discuss the 2010 Pro Bowl telecast (Sunday, Jan. 31, ESPN and ESPN HD at 7:20 p.m. ET) and the Indianapolis Colts-New Orleans Saints matchup in Super Bowl XLIV. Monday Night Football commentators Mike Tirico, Ron Jaworksi and Jon Gruden, who will call the game, were joined by senior coordinating producer Jay Rothman. A full replay of the call is available here. Select comments from the call:

Rothman on producing the Pro Bowl telecast …

“We had it a couple years in Hawaii. It’s an opportunity for us to do a lot of things we’re not able to do during the regular season. The big thing for us is access in this game. We’ll be pretty aggressive at mic’s on players, including all the quarterbacks and other players as well … aggressive with interviews on the sidelines and bringing the stars to the fans. We will have cameras in locker rooms, pregame, halftime, postgame and huddles. We’re also excited about Super Bowl participants there including Drew Brees and Peyton Manning on the field with Chris Berman.

“We’ll have a ton of production elements, video packages and special graphics that we bring into the game because another thing is celebrating these athletes who made it into the Pro Bowl and celebrating their season. We have 25 cameras for this game, but it’s a little different plan for us. It’s more about maximizing all the audio we have versus the game coverage.”

On the new Pro Bowl format before the Super Bowl XLIV …

Jaworski: “To a certain degree the format negates some of the stars being able to play in the game. The fact that Super Bowl participants won’t be able to participate in the Pro Bowl you knock out some of the talent level, but clearly what I saw this morning at practice was an incredibly talented group of players … there’s elite talent on the field.”

Gruden: “It’s a change. The NFL wants to try something different and I’m eager to see how it works. It certainly will add some momentum, I think, to the Super Bowl. Every year there are players that choose not to play in the Pro Bowl with the regular format, whether it be for injury or whatever the reason may be. There is a talented group of players on these rosters and I think it’s going to be a great setup for the Super Bowl.”

On the Colts’ running game …

Gruden: “The running game for the Colts is always set up for play-action pass. The Colts will only run the football when Peyton Manning diagnoses that they have the proper look. You’ll see two safeties back there. Peyton Manning will not waste runs. He’s going to use the running game to set up the sting of their play-action pass, which is as good as I’ve seen in football over the last 10 years.”

Jaworski: “Balance is always important for an offense – some illusion of a running game if not a solid running game. …They’re a team that likes to draw the pass rush. They like to create seams by bringing those ends up the field … Never ceases to amaze me that they will run the play-action pass against cover 2.”

On Drew Brees and Peyton Manning and what they will do best against the opposing defense in the Super Bowl …

Gruden: “The key to Peyton Manning is his ability to use a snap-count in different tempos in terms of the entire game. He’ll jump a no-huddle and they’ll play fast. … You’ll see a lot of theater before the ball snap. It looks like Manning is calling an audible when he’s really not. … This is the ultimate CEO quarterback. Nobody in my lifetime I have ever seen does as much as Peyton Manning does on game day before the ball is snapped. And I don’t know anybody who has the freedom that he has to run the skills on offense.”

“As far as Drew Brees, I spent a lot of time there in New Orleans watching this guy. He is the surgeon. He will cut you up with three-yard passes. His guys will take those three-yard passes and they can run with it after they catch it. They can line up any formation and any personnel group you give them. They might line up in 30 different formations on the first 30 plays of the game. Drew Brees is totally on-line with Sean Payton, it’s a two-headed monster. Those two guys have been together for a long time and it shows on the practice field, it shows in the meeting room. They will put a full-court press on the Indianapolis defense with formation, personnel groupings and the talented group they send out there.”

On experiencing the Saints’ return to the Superdome post Katrina on MNF in 2006 …

Jaworski: “Despite what had happened, there was an incredible experience that the Saints were back, the Saints were playing, New Orleans was back or pride was back — it was an incredible feeling … I was standing right by the Saints tunnel when they came on the field. I don’t know if it was an illusion I was having, but the Saints players were three feet off the ground. That crowd, that noise, when they came on that field they were in the air. That’s how much that crowd impacted that football team. … They played a fantastic game and won that game. It really is a moment in time I will never forget.”

Tirico: “I’ve never seen a game matter more to the fans … because 13 months ago it was a place of last resort … Going from there 13 months later, it was the introduction to the rest of the world that New Orleans was open for business and could still in some ways be similar to the city we knew it as for many years. I don’t remember a crowd being louder at any event I’ve been at … I get chills talking about it. … I think it’s important because it was the first connection to everybody else that the city could come back. It was a symbol of hope unlike athletics has been to a city before, and a lot of the key faces on that team are still key faces on that team in Sean Payton, Drew Brees and Reggie Bush. The link is honest, legitimate and I do believe there is a tighter bond between that franchise and that city than any other professional sports team right now.”

On whether this Super Bowl matchup shows offenses can win championships …

Jaworski: “It started last year. As we watch the evolution of the NFL, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind it is a passing league. Look at the quarterback play, look at statistically the profile of teams and their numbers, efficiency of quarterbacks, the yards per game. Teams are building now for the passing game.”

On the NFL’s ratings success this year …

Tirico: “I don’t think we have a guess if this is a crest or (if) it can keep going. … Football fits our lives in 2010 better than any other sport. You can give six hours of your week to football and watch the game, pregame, postgame, surf one or two shows during the week and be pretty darn good and well-versed in your team. … I think the competitive balance of your team yells out to me too. You have national teams in small markets. You have not heard the word small-market once regarding Indianapolis, New Orleans, or Minnesota and they’ve driven unbelievable ratings. … You have a league of stars. It’s a league where stars are available on TV. It’s not oversaturated. Football goes away here after Super Bowl for six months and you’re dying for a taste of it in the preseason. I think the way the game has been put together in terms of competitive balance, it’s not oversaturated and the best players are playing at a very high level right now. … It fits our style. I would say overall once we hit the recession, leading into this year, people started being more careful with their discretionary spending, seems that more people are sitting at home and watching TV and family events around the TV. Football pulls a lot of people in under your roof to watch for three hours. I think it was a variety of things that come together all at once.”

On what Colts quarterback Peyton Manning does better than anyone else …

Gruden: “I don’t think anybody works harder than Peyton Manning. … He’s there early, he’s there late, here’s there all the time. He’s demanding. He’s able to adjust. … It doesn’t matter who’s around him, the guy is brilliant.  He’s a superb gameday player. His preparation is rare. He’s got a tremendous strong, accurate arm. He’s tough as nails. He’s an all day, every down problem for anybody, every week.”

Jaworski: “I thought from a cerebral standpoint, it was Peyton Manning’s best game of his career. … The speed with which he makes decisions is incredible. … He just has a brilliant mind. By the time that ball is snapped from the top of his drop he knows exactly where everyone is. He sees the field with incredible clarity and he is really smart. That’s not even talking about the physical attributes and how he threw the ball with incredible accuracy.”

On Drew Brees’ size and ability …

Jaworski: “You’ll see Drew get up on his toes to throw over people. He’s not a long strider. … I think he’s just uncanny with his movement in the pocket, the ability to find the lanes and throw from different platforms. He’ll move his passing slot to get to an open receiver. The accuracy is absolutely amazing. He didn’t have his best game last week so I do expect him to rebound in the Super Bowl.”

Gruden: “I stood there behind the Saints in training camp asking myself that very question. I stand back there and I can’t see two feet beyond the line of scrimmage. He can throw sidearm, he can throw off his back foot. He can reset, start one way, reset and get rid of the ball. When the ball comes out of his hand, it’s quick. Tremendous pocket presence and he is a way better athlete than people realize.”

On Brett Favre’s season with the Vikings and the possibility of him coming back …

Jaworski: “I have no inside information, it’s just an instinct, but I do believe Brett Favre will come back. I believe when he sits back and reflects upon the experience he had in Minnesota and what he did for that franchise, what he did for his teammates what he did for that city, he’s going to think very positively of it. I believe disappointment of that last play will be motivation for him to believe that his career didn’t end on a bad decision. He played great in that game. … The guy had a phenomenal, phenomenal regular season. He played terrific in that game. I think when he looks back and thinks about it, his body heals again, he’s 40-years-old, but I can tell you this, the guy can still throw the football with anyone. … Once his body heals, his mind will heal as well and he just loves to play the game. My instinct tells me he’s going to come back.”

Gruden: “I think when the dust settles, if we can just let Brett alone, I really think he’ll surface again and come back and play great again. I think he’s at the top of his game, why would he walk away? Unless he feels like he accomplished what he set out to accomplish, that’s the only thing he might say. He took the Vikings further than they’d been in a long time, he beat the Packers twice in a convincing fashion, and maybe he just wants to hang it up for that reason. I really believe the competitor that he is, once the grass starts smelling a certain way around football season, he’ll be back. Because the NFL needs him and he loves it. That guy loves to play.”

Serena vs. Henin in Australian Open Final on ESPN2

Serena vs. Henin in Australian Open Final on ESPN2

Fernandez & Shriver Preview the Match Between Top Two Players of Last 10 Years

Serena Williams and Justine Henin – very different athletes who nevertheless have been the top two players in women’s tennis for a decade with 18 major titles between them – will meet in a Grand Slam event final for the first time at the Australian Open presented by Franklin Templeton Investments on ESPN2 late Friday night, Jan. 29, at 3:30 a.m. ET (half past midnight PT).

The powerful 28-year-old Williams, the no. 1 seed of the tournament and defending champion, will attempt to win her fifth title Down Under and 12th major victory overall.  The slightly built unseeded Henin – 27 and playing in only her second event after a 20-month retirement suddenly announced in May 2008 – is seeking her second win in Melbourne (she has seven major titles) and has looked impressive along the way, like she was never away from the game. The Belgian Henin and American Williams have met 13 times before with Henin winning seven. The two have played six times in Grand Slam evens and Henin has a 4-2 advantage. They have never played in the Grand Slam event final.

ESPN’s Mary Joe Fernandez and Pam Shriver preview the match:

Fernandez:  “They both have been playing aggressively but in different ways.  Serena is more straight forward – strong serves and blasting returns.  She’s more about hitting through people.  Justine is more aggressive than she used to be, but by using variety – more spin, more slices and coming to the net. All along, I’ve thought Serena was the favorite to win, but now she’s coming off two long matches in the quarters and semifinal.  I’m not sure if she’s completely healthy.  She’s all wrapped up and not moving well, so now I’m inclined to give Justine the edge.  But Serena continues to play doubles so she can’t be feeling that bad, and she certainly knows how to dig deep in big matches.  It may come down to Serena’s serve.  She’ll want short points.  On the other hand, Justine will want to get into long rallies and slowly construct points.  It’s a fascinating matchup of contrasting styles.”

Shriver:  “This match up should be the best rivalry for the next two years as they are the best players at the majors where the pressure is greatest.  Three years ago when Justine defeated Serena in the quarters of three straight majors (French Open, Wimbledon, US Open), Serena was just not physically or mentally good enough.  I feel in the last three years Serena has toughened up – especially at the majors – and is committed to being the best.  If Serena is not physically close to 100 per cent, then Justine will win, but Serena has been devastating Down Under since dropping the opening set in the 2005 Australian Open final to Lindsay Davenport, winning that match and in 2007 and ‘09.  If she is fully healthy, I give Serena a slight edge.  But Justine will be ready to take it if Serena is not playing at her best level. I can’t wait.”
